'France are missing out': Ashley Young questions Didier Deschamps' decision to leave Manchester United forward Anthony Martial out of squad

* Anthony Martial has scored five goals in nine games for Manchester United
* But he has not been called up by France since 2017 and is not in current squad
* Ashley Young is surprised that he has not been included in their plans

Manchester United captain Ashley Young thinks World Cup winners France have blundered by ignoring Anthony Martial whose form has made some of United's attacking football 'unbelievable to watch' this season.

Martial is in great shape at United with five goals in nine games but hasn't represented his country since 2017 and was left out again of Didier Deschamps' squad for upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Albania.

Young said: 'The way Anthony plays with Marcus (Rashford) is unplayable at times. Anthony was a big miss when he was injured.

'You can see he is a natural goalscorer. For me I think France are missing out - I can't understand why he's not in their squad. That is up to them but he can only get better.'

Young, 34, is revelling in his role as United's enforcer and guide to the younger players. While the team struggled for goals at the start of the season, he says the 3-0 win against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday was great to watch from left-back.

'Some of the combinations from the boys up front was unbelievable for us watching at the back,' he said. 'At times this season, we've blown teams away with our attacking. When you watch us going forward you think it is only going to be a matter of time (to score).

Ashley Young believes France have missed a trick by not calling up Anthony Martial. Young said he could not understand why Martial was not in the France squad this break

'As a captain, players will come to you and want to talk. It is a different era to when I was coming through but I am the same way and will never change, whether others think I am too hard or not too hard. Everyone wants the best for each other. The youngsters have been at Man United and have the DNA. They know what it takes.'

Young is suspended for Sunday's game against Brighton which could give a chance to 19-year-old left-back Brandon Williams.

'Every time he's pulled on a first-team shirt, he has been brilliant,' said Young. 'He wants to learn and listen. I am sure if he is called upon he will put in another very good performance.'

'He looks lethargic all the time... as if he's not bothered': Ryan Giggs gives damning assessment of Manchester United striker Anthony Martial after draw against Everton

* Ryan Giggs did not hold back on his assessment of Anthony Martial on Sunday
* The Wales boss called the Manchester United striker 'lethargic all the time'
* Martial struggled against Everton as Mason Greenwood came on to grab a point

Ryan Giggs accused Anthony Martial of being 'lethargic all the time' after a disappointing display in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton.

The Manchester United striker struggled to make a telling contribution at Old Trafford as academy forward Mason Greenwood came off the bench to salvage a point for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

And for Giggs, a legend at United, the Frenchman is 'talented' but he needs to do more to influence matches at the top level.

Anthony Martial was accused of being 'lethargic all the time' by former United star Ryan Giggs. The Wales boss feels the French forward must do more if he is to continue in the No 9 position

'He is talented, and he's not a bad kid, but the problem he has is that he looks lethargic all the time. He looks casual, as if he's not bothered,' Giggs told the Premier League, via Metro.

'When it comes off, and he's doing brilliant things, you say it just comes naturally. But when it's not, you think: he's not running, he's not trying, he's not working hard enough, he's not holding the ball up.

'So in my eyes he has to try extra hard because of his persona, because of the way that he moves.

Martial struggled against Everton and has managed just four league goals so far this season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reliant on Martial and Marcus Rashford to provide the bulk of the goals

'But he doesn't look like he breaks sweat and when United are chasing a game you want someone to get across the front post – you might not score, but your team-mate might score.'

Greenwood's impressive season continued to gather pace with his clinical strike from the edge of the area to level the game against Everton.

Many of the teenage striker's appearances have come from the bench but Greenwood's strike will act as a shot to Martial to justify his selection as the primary No 9.

With Romelu Lukaku sold to Inter Milan in the summer and the burden being placed on Marcus Rashford and Martial, Solskjaer is reliant on goals from the young strike duo.

Martial has managed to score four goals from 11 Premier League games this season. He reached 10 league goals across the entirety of the 2018-19 campaign.

'There's no need to say it in front of everybody... it can get to you': Anthony Martial BLASTS his former manager Jose Mourinho for publicly criticising his performances at Manchester United

* Jose Mourinho initially showed faith in Anthony Martial when he arrived in 2016
* Martial ended up having a tough time under a boss who often singled him out
* Martial says Mourinho's words did motivate him but weren't really necessary

Anthony Martial has revealed he was more motivated than ever to prove Jose Mourinho wrong during a testing time under the former Manchester United boss.

Martial played under Mourinho for two and a half seasons from 2016 to 2018 before the Portuguese boss was sacked.

Mourinho had faith in Martial to begin with but after making 18 Premier League starts in the 2016-17 campaign, the French forward barely got a look in the following season after the arrival of Romelu Lukaku.

Anthony Martial doesn't believe Jose Mourinho's public criticism of him was necessary. Martial has found his way back into the team under OIe Gunnar Solskjaer's management

Martial often came in for criticism from Mourinho during press conferences and post-match interviews.

Mourinho said last year: 'He [Martial] is a boy with a different personality. The thing I can say is that I hope he will reach a level commensurate with his real potential.'

In an interview with French broadcaster RMC Sport, Martial said while he was motivated to do better, he didn't appreciate Mourinho's public attacks on him.

Solskjaer has spoken of Martial as being a 'vital player' for what he needs at Manchester United

He said: 'It's true that I'd have preferred it if he'd told me directly, there's no need to say it in front of everybody. After that, you definitely want to prove him wrong.

'He didn't start me during the first few games and each time I came on, I scored. In the end, he told me "you see, now you understand what I wanted".

'It can get to you. You just want to show him you deserve to be on the pitch.'

Martial has since made his way back into the United team under current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Indeed, Solskjaer spoke of Martial's importance to the team earlier in the season.

'Anthony is a vital player for us,' Solskjaer said of the 24-year-old, who has scored eight goals in 19 top-flight appearances this term.

'Martial is not a No 9, he is not a striker': Steve McClaren says Manchester United must NOT depend on Frenchman to fill Marcus Rashford void in top-four battle

* Manchester United have been told not to use Anthony Martial as a striker
* Frenchman has scored 12 times this season but has struggled through middle
* Steve McClaren believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should use him in wide areas

Manchester United cannot use Anthony Martial as a lone frontman, according to Steve McClaren.

The Frenchman has scored 12 times in an injury-disrupted campaign but has struggled to assert himself as a central striker.

And McClaren believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be best served abandoning any use of him as a No 9.

Steve McClaren has criticised Manchester United's use of Frenchman Anthony Martial. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been advised to use Martial in wide areas instead of up front. Steve McClaren wants Solskjaer to abandon using the Frenchman as a lone frontman

He told Sky Sports News: 'Martial is not a No 9, he is not a striker. All his goals, all his best moments are on that left-hand side.

'Whether that's outside left or whether that's inside left, that's where he plays. He cannot play down the middle on his own.'

United have struggled for goals this season after the departures of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku last summer.

With topscorer Marcus Rashford out injured at the moment, the brunt of responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Martial and teenager Mason Greenwood.

United were forced into action on transfer deadline day, snapping up former Watford striker Odion Ighalo on loan.

'It looks like he needs telling to get into the box': Paul Scholes launches scathing criticism of Anthony Martial as he questions the Frenchman's desire as a Manchester United striker

* Anthony Martial scored for Manchester United on Monday against Chelsea
* However, that didn't prevent Paul Scholes from singling him out for criticism
* The former United icon is unsure as to whether the Frenchman can lead the line

Paul Scholes admits he doesn't believe Anthony Martial is the right man to lead the line for Manchester United in the absence of Marcus Rashford.

Martial scored on Monday night as the Red Devils beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

However, despite finding the net, Scholes was left unimpressed by his positioning and the lack of desire he showed in the role.

'With Anthony Martial, it's interesting, I don't know if he's a wide player, I don't know if he's a centre forward,' the former United icon told Goal.com.

'Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] clearly thinks there's a centre forward in there and he's telling him to get in the box as often as he can.

'[On Monday] he laboured at times to get in the box, he didn't really bust a gut. You shouldn't need to [tell a striker to get into the penalty box], but if you're Anthony Martial he looks like he needs telling.

Anthony Martial's ability to lead Manchester United's frontline has been questioned

'He looks like he doesn't take that much information in. Some players are like that, sometimes you tell them once and they'll do it all the time.

'He looks like you need to tell him every two minutes, what you want him to do.'

Manchester United's win on Monday saw them move to within just three points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

They take on Club Brugge in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 clash on Thursday then host Watford on Sunday.

Default Re: Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial was slammed as not being a proper No 9 but against both Club Brugge and Chelsea he provided evidence that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's faith in him as a striker isn't misplaced

* Anthony Martial scored a brilliant equaliser in 1-1 draw away at Club Brugge
* The striker showed the athleticism and quality to prove he could be a No 9
* Martial now has 14 goals for the season - three short of his highest ever tally

Maybe it was the presence of Louis van Gaal, the manager who signed him, in the Jan Breydelstadion that inspired Anthony Martial.

Or maybe it was coming up against a Brugge defence short of Premier League class.

Either way, the 24-year-old French forward finally looked the player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown so much faith in. So much faith in fact he sold Romelu Lukaku for £75 million and asked Martial to fill his shoes as a No 9 instead of signing a replacement.

Anthony Martial's terrific goal against Club Brugge showed his undoubted ability as a No 9. Martial has been criticised for not being a proper striker but he has the tools to be a success. The 24-year-old has justified the faith shown in him by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Martial has been bickered at all season for having a suspect first touch, not holding the ball up with his back to goal and letting his head drop when things went against United.

But a rainy, cold Thursday Europa League night was a time for him to show everyone what he is good at.

Primary among those was the pace and finish to score a precious United equaliser after they’d made a dodgy start and trailed 1-0.

Martial now has 14 goals for the season - just three short of his highest ever career tally. The arrival of Odion Ighalo enabled Solskjaer to rest Martial for the last 15 minutes of the game

Martial showed strength too, holding off Brendan Mechele before accelerating away to slip a low shot past Simon Mignolet, once of Liverpool.

It was Martial’s 14th goal of the season - just three short of his best ever tally. It was his second goal in a row, and they’ve both been important - a great header to break the deadlock at Chelsea and a goal that should see United progress in Europe.

The confidence was visible. Martial also hit the post. He went looking for the ball.

Even the arrival of Odion Ighalo is in his favour.

Solskjaer was able to give Martial some minutes rest at the end. He should be fresh for Watford on Sunday.

Is Martial a £75million centre-forward yet. Is he the finished article? No and no.

But there is growing evidence Solskaer’s belief he can be a Manchester United striker is not misplaced.

'What is he here for? He needs to score goals': Louis Saha blasts criticism of Anthony Martial's attitude... and insists manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has the determination to succeed at Manchester United

* Louis Saha is an admirer of Anthony Martial, saying his skills are 'unbelievable'
* Martial has scored three goals in Manchester United's last three matches
* Former United forward Saha was also excited to see how Odion Ighalo fares
* He gives Harry Maguire an 8/10 for this season and backs Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha insists any criticism of Anthony Martial's body language should be disregarded, as his objective is simply to score goals.

The much-maligned Martial has stepped up to the plate in Marcus Rashford's absence, scoring a goal in each of the club's last three games taking his season tally to 15 in all competitions.

Fellow Frenchman Saha, who played at Old Trafford for four and a half years under Sir Alex Ferguson, admits he is a big fan of the 24-year-old and reminded critics of what Martial's primary responsibility is out on the pitch.

'His skills are just unbelievable - the anger and aggressiveness he is showing right now is unplayable,' Saha told Sportsmail.

'Everyone always tells me "he needs to run more", but why is he here? He needs to score goals. Don't tell him to run more if it's going to affect his goal ratios.

'The attitude doesn't matter. Playing for United can be really hard if you're not getting fed by your team-mates, but everyone knows he is a massive threat and only needs one or two chances to score.'

Anthony Martial has scored three from three and is thriving in Marcus Rashford's absence. Former Man United striker and fellow Frenchman Louis Saha admits he is a big fan of Martial. Martial scored via a delicious chip over goalkeeper Ben Foster against Watford on Sunday

Saha also acknowledged that he was excited to see how Odion Ighalo fared and was glowing about Harry Maguire's first season at the club.

'He has a different sort of style [to other forward options] and has a lot of strength and power - the competition will be really helpful,' Saha pointed out, speaking from Marriott Hotels Seat of Dreams at Old Trafford.

'Of course, when you go to a different country there's a question of how you’re going to be when you come back, but he’s clearly a motivated lad and I’m excited to see more.

'Maguire has definitely been one of the successful signings. With all he offers and his leadership, I would say Maguire has been at least an 8/10 this season.'

Saha, now 41, also backed former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to succeed as United boss due to his determination and motivation levels.

Although Saha divulged that he saw Roy Keane and Gary Neville as more vocal leaders in the dressing room in the mid-2000s, he praised the Norwegian's endearing features in the top job currently.

'Of course, as a young manager in such a big position you’re going to make mistakes,' Saha added.

'But I appreciate the honesty and openness he has about him. He will improve and he he has the power and the drive. I saw back then his determination to improve every day.'

Since the winter break, United have won both of their games in the Premier League and are now just three points off fourth-placed Chelsea.

They also drew 1-1 at Club Brugge in the Europa League last-32 first leg - the return encounter is on Thursday evening at Old Trafford.

'He's got a reaction out of Martial': Roy Keane says Odion Ighalo's arrival at Manchester United has sparked Anthony Martial into life

* Manchester United's Anthony Martial scored the opener against rivals Man City
* Club legend Roy Keane believes he has stepped up since Odion Ighalo joined
* The Frenchman has netted four times since the Nigerian was brought in on loan

Manchester United's signing of Odion Ighalo has forced Anthony Martial to up his game at Old Trafford, according to club legend Roy Keane.

The Red Devils raised eyebrows by bringing in the former Watford forward on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January, but the Nigerian has impressed after notching three goals for the club.

And Keane believes Ighalo has given the whole team a boost as well as providing a goal threat, raising the work rate of Frenchman Martial - who scored the opener in United's 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City.

United legend Roy Keane praised Martial for raising his game since Odion Ighalo joined on loan. Keane said another forward coming in can push a striker and get a good reaction from them

'You've had a reaction as well from Martial,' he told Sky Sports. 'Sometimes a new striker comes in, you praise the new striker, but then that pushes the other lads.

'There's almost been a reaction from Martial, thinking: "Oh, I've got another player to fight with for my position". And there's been a good reaction.'

The former Monaco man has scored four times since Ighalo arrived on deadline day, and he has found the back of the net on 16 occasions in total this season - he's also registered five assists.

United had previously been playing without a recognised senior forward after Marcus Rashford was ruled out through injury and no striker was brought in to replace him last summer.

'He shows us glimpses of his quality but he needs to do it on a regular basis now': Anthony Martial must build on his first hat-trick for 'scintillating' Manchester United, says Jamie Redknapp

* Anthony Martial struck his first hat-trick for Manchester United on Wednesday
* The Frenchman was sublime as he hit a treble against below-par Sheffield United
* Jamie Redknapp feels that Martial has 'shown glimpses' of his talents previously
* But the Sky Sports pundit wants to see consistency after his first United hat-trick

Jamie Redknapp has challenged Anthony Martial to add consistency to his game in a bid to realise his potential after the Frenchman bagged his first hat-trick for Manchester United.

Martial was a class apart from everyone else on the Old Trafford pitch on Wednesday night as his treble secured victory over a below-par Sheffield United.

Redknapp hailed the 'scintillating' United performance and believes the key for Martial now is to mirror the excellence he showed against the Blades every week.

'(Anthony) Martial does this, he shows us glimpses of his quality but he needs to do it on a regular basis now,' Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

'[It was] scintillating at times. Sheffield United weren't at their best and I worry for them a bit.'

Martial got the opening goal in the seventh minute after doing brilliantly to read and connect with a fizzing cross from Marcus Rashford.

Anthony Martial was the star of the show with his first hat-trick for Manchester United. The Frenchman showed composure and quality to down Sheffield United on Wednesday. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp wants Martial to add consistency to realise his potential. It was the first time a United player had hit a hat-trick in the Premier League since back in 2013

His second came on the stroke of half-time after a pin-point cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford turned provider again for the third to give Martial his first United hat-trick since joining in 2015 from AS Monaco.

The 24-year-old was the undoubted Man of the Match but with Rashford also impressing, Redknapp's fellow pundit Graeme Souness believes the Englishman can be the benchmark for which Martial measures himself.

When asked about how this hat-trick can help Martial, Souness said: 'We know he is class, he has everything to be a top, top player.

'If he could just have the same enthusiasm as Marcus Rashford for the game.

'Sometimes he hides it, sometimes he doesn't seem interested. Maybe he needs to score early to stay interested.'

As well as Martial's first hat-trick at United, it is also the first time a United player has produced a treble since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Graeme Souness was impressed but wants Martial (right) to be as hungry as Marcus Rashford. Souness feels Martial can be a 'top, top player' if he stays engaged and interested every match

Robin van Persie against Aston Villa at Old Trafford was the last player to walk away with the match-ball in a United shirt.

The victory was essential for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side and they are now two points behind Chelsea, who sit fourth, and six behind struggling Leicester City, who stay third despite back-to-back draws since the restart.

Chelsea face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday knowing a defeat leaves the door open for United to seize control of the race for Champions League.
