Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

When two egos collide: Paul Pogba needs to feel special but Jose Mourinho only wants players who run through walls for him

* Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Manchester United's record signing Paul Pogba
* The France midfielder returned to United only two years ago for £89million
* He is perhaps the ultimate manifestation of the modern football super-ego
* But Mourinho tries to instil such devotion that a player will run through walls

It says everything about the length of time Manchester United have been struggling to turn Paul Pogba into a world-beating asset that fax technology was the preferred form of communication when the efforts began.

It was May 2009 and internet reports had started circulating about their interest in the 16-year-old player of Le Havre, whose managing director, Alain Belsoeur, faxed the then Old Trafford chief executive David Gill to say he was French property.

United's rapid response — a telephone call from then academy director Brian McClair and several faxes back — indicated their great interest.

Le Havre threatened legal action for a time, with United rejecting suggestions from France that the France Under 16 captain and his parents were paid €200,000 (£172,500) and offered a house in Manchester to move.

Little did United know that within nine years they would have lavished £112.2million in transfer fees and wages on Pogba, signing him, losing him, winning him back and then finding that manager Jose Mourinho is — as revealed by Sportsmail on Tuesday — willing to show him the door again this summer.

Back in the early days of this star-crossed affair, Sir Alex Ferguson rather idealistically said in a discussion about Pogba that: 'Matt Busby summed it up perfectly — you don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United. It will eventually find you. If you're good enough, you will earn money and become rich playing for Manchester United.'

But it's more complex with Pogba. He is perhaps the ultimate manifestation of the modern football super-ego and needs a manager who can intuit how to extract the best from him. That involves a basic grasp of psychology. But with Pogba and Mourinho, ego meets ego.

Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Manchester United's record-signing Paul Pogba this summer. The France midfielder needs a manager who can intuit how to extract the best from him. Mourinho's motivational method is instilling such devotion that a player will run through walls

This manager has only one motivational method — instilling such devotion that a player will run through walls. The extraordinary feats this season of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah — both Mourinho rejects at Chelsea — demonstrate that his approach can bring collateral damage for the clubs he leads.

It was clear from Pogba's first spell at United that he did not care for authority. He wanted more than the 67 minutes of Premier League football Ferguson gave him in 2011-12 and his subsequent disinclination to hang around led to some brutal contract negotiations.

Mino Raiola, the hugely influential Dutch-Italian who became his agent after he had arrived in Manchester, told Ferguson that his own 'two chihuahuas' wouldn't sign up to the terms of the one-year contract United were offering the teenager. Raiola claims that conversation concluded with Ferguson directing a particularly foul four-letter term of abuse at him.

'I distrusted him from the moment I met him,' Ferguson later said of Raiola. 'He and I were like oil and water.' So Pogba went to Juventus and won four titles working with Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri — who saw to it that everyone worked around him.

Pogba displayed great potential in Italy, rather than proof of an entirely finished product. His best football came in Didier Deschamps' France team as the best young player at the 2014 World Cup — again, as the figurehead, because Deschamps seemed to understand Pogba better than any other manager.

'Privately, he (Deschamps) puts huge pressure on him, because he knows that if Paul is too relaxed, he can be bad on the pitch,' one French source tells Sportsmail. 'It's a hard balance for those who manage him. You have to give him confidence, but not too much.'

The evidence of these past few years in Manchester points to a player whose raging ego requires similar nuance. When you strip away his accoutrements — the Richard Mille wristwatch, the Cartier diamond-hoop earrings — there is no sense whatsoever that the 25-year-old feels he has room to improve, despite an understanding of how life is on the other side of the tracks, instilled by an impoverished upbringing in Roissy-en-Brie in the Parisian suburbs.

In retrospect, it didn't help that his return for a world-record £89m, in August 2016, should have been accompanied by one of the most extravagant publicity campaigns football has ever known. United coined the #Pogback hashtag. There was the slick adidas promotional video with rapper Stormzy on hand to collaborate. And accompanying lyrics delivered with neither a blush nor the remotest sense of irony.

'Look, man, I'm the one they all fear. I was the man of the year last year... Now I'm the man of the year for a second year straight... sitting at the top, like, 'Hold on is anybody there?'

Pogba, it seems, is always more than happy to believe his own publicity. He rarely gives interviews or stops in player/journalist mixed zones yet he recently launched a monthly 10-minute programme on France's Canal+ channel, called Pogba Mondial. The latest episode saw him and Antoine Griezmann chatting about the importance of the French media praising the team during this summer's World Cup.

The nation is not at all sure which Pogba will turn up in Russia. 'He will be the player who helps France to win the World Cup, or the one who causes the team to lose the title,' the distinguished L'Equipe football writer Vincent Duluc observed.

At United, Pogba's sense of victimhood dates to January 31, when Mourinho's unwillingness to shape the United team around him against Tottenham led to a public disagreement between them.

No quarter was given from either side. Pogba started just three of the next nine games. His performances have telegraphed his dis-affection. He only burst into life against Manchester City this month after a pitiful first half. It was a mere 15 days after the Tottenham disagreement that his wish to leave the club surfaced.

The stand-off explains Pep Guardiola's claim, before the teams met, that Raiola had offered Pogba to Manchester City — an act which could not have taken place without the player's say-so.

Pogba has been given an easy ride by fans on that one. A gang of United fans in balaclavas pitched up at Wayne Rooney's Prestbury house when he seemed vaguely willing to join City in 2010.

Pogba has said nothing publicly since April 7, when Guardiola's disclosure about the transfer offer prompted his 'Say what?' reply on Twitter. If Paris Saint-Germain can swerve Financial Fair Play rules to sign him, he could soon be strutting his stuff at a level way beneath his potential.

And Ferguson will not be the only one smiling ruefully. Arsene Wenger was also sniffing around in the summer of 2009 but he took Le Havre's refusal to trade at face value and walked away.

Paul Pogba offered to PSG as £89m star considers his options after it is revealed that Jose Mourinho is ready to let him leave Manchester United

* Sportsmail revealed that Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Paul Pogba this summer
* The £89million midfielder has been offered to Paris Saint-Germain by his agent
* It's unclear if PSG could sign him while facing allegations of breaching FFP rules
* Real Madrid and Barcelona are other options but there has been little interest

Paul Pogba has been offered to Paris Saint-Germain by his agent Mino Raiola as Manchester United’s record signing considers his options.

Sportsmail revealed that Jose Mourinho is prepared to let Pogba go this summer just two years after the Frenchman returned to Old Trafford from Juventus for £89million.

Pogba has struggled to live up to expectations while his relationship with Mourinho has grown increasingly fractious in recent months.

Pep Guardiola revealed earlier this month that Raiola offered Pogba to Manchester City in January, and it’s understood that the Italian agent has also made contact with PSG over the possibility of a summer move as he hawks the player around Europe’s top teams.

However, it’s unclear if the French club would be able to sign Pogba while facing allegations of breaching UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules over their acquisition of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for a combined £365m.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are two other options, but it’s believed there has been little interest from Spain so far.

That would leave City, Chelsea and, possibly, Juventus among the clubs capable of affording Pogba’s transfer fee and personal terms.

Paul Pogba has been offered to Paris Saint-Germain as the midfielder considers his options. Sportsmail revealed on Monday that Jose Mourinho is prepared to let Pogba go this summer

The 25-year-old currently earns in excess of £200,000-a-week including image rights, and he will receive a loyalty bonus of £3.46m this summer plus a pay rise of £1.875m if United qualify for the Champions League.

Raiola, who pocketed £41.39m from Pogba’s move to United, did not deny offering the player to City following Guardiola’s revelation.

‘I never spoke to him,’ said Raiola earlier this month. ‘I offer players not to him but to Manchester City, which is a fantastic club with a fantastic manager.

‘Who I talk about, I will not comment. I leave that to the club’s responsibility and account.’

Raiola’s relationship with Mourinho and United is not as strong as it was since his other star clients Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan left Old Trafford. That just leaves Pogba and goalkeeper Sergio Romero who has also been linked with a move away from the club.

Mourinho will also have to convince Ed Woodward if he wants to offload Pogba. The Old Trafford chief would be reluctant to admit the move has failed after seeing other high-profile stars like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao flop at United in recent years.

It’s understood that the club’s hierarchy would prefer not to sell Pogba this summer because they already have to sign two central midfielders to replace Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.

United had scouts in Austria last week to watch Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in Europa League action against RB Leipzig.

Fred, of Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, Chelsea midfielder Willian and Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama are among the candidates under consideration.

Mourinho’s list of players who could be released this summer includes Pogba, Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind.

Darmian is almost certain to return to Italy with Juventus, and admitted on Tuesday that he is tempted by the move.

‘I’m living a great experience here in England, and I’d say yes to United again,’ he said.

‘I won several trophies here but I miss Italy. Let’s see what happens at the end of the season.’

Juve have also been linked with Martial, who is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Paul Scholes praises Paul Pogba after impressive display in victory over Bournemouth: 'If he can play like this there shouldn't be a better player in world football'

* Manchester United beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday
* Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku found the net either side of half-time
* Midfielder Paul Pogba was one of United's standout performers on the night
* Paul Scholes had criticised the player after Sunday's West Brom defeat

Paul Pogba was on the receiving end of a wave of criticism from Paul Scholes following his team's defeat to West Brom on Sunday but the Manchester United legend had nothing but good things to say about the Frenchman on Wednesday.

Goals from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku saw the Red Devils beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium with Pogba one of the standout performers on the night.

And Scholes, who had described Pogba's showing on Sunday as 'disrespectful', was quick to praise the midfielder this time around.

Paul Pogba was on of the standout performers during Man United's win over Bournemouth. Paul Scholes was quick to praise the midfielder following his impressive display. Pogba recieved plenty of criticism on Sunday but redeemed himself on Wednesday night. Jose Mourinho described Pogba's showing as a 'top, top performance'

'There's no doubt about the lad's ability, we've seen it over the years,' the 43-year-old pundit said on Sky Sports following the game.

'He was good tonight, there was a lot of pressure on him after the game on Sunday. As his manager said he did everything simple.

'It was a complete contrast from the way he was playing on Sunday. If he can play like this there shouldn't be a better player in world football really.'

United boss Jose Mourinho took exception to Scholes' critique of Pogba following the West Brom loss and did not hesitate to heap praise on the player after Wednesday's victory.

'A top, top performance,' Mourinho said when asked to rate Pogba's showing.

'I'm not very good on Man of the Match, especially because I'm a team manager, but he played very well so good choice.'

'Obviously the performance against Man City was special, coming with two goals, but this performance was a very similar level. So top performance. He can do it.'

Manchester United to demand £140m for Paul Pogba if troubled midfielder leaves Old Trafford in the summer

* Sportsmail revealed that Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Paul Pogba this summer
* Mourinho's relationship with the Frenchman has reached breaking point
* The club’s hierarchy are reluctant to sanction the sale of the player
* Five other players already look set to leave Old Trafford in the summer

Manchester United will demand up to £140million for Paul Pogba if he leaves Old Trafford this summer.

Sportsmail revealed this week that Jose Mourinho is prepared to sell Pogba after his relationship with the France midfielder reached breaking point.

The club’s hierarchy are reluctant to sanction the move, two years after paying Juventus a then world record fee of £89m to re-sign Pogba.

Manchester United will demand up to £140million for Paul Pogba if he leaves Old Trafford. Pogba's relationship with manager Jose Mourinho has reached breaking point. Mourinho is prepared to sell the France international who has struggled again this season. The United boss has grown increasingly frustrated with the Frenchman's attitude

They hope Mourinho and Pogba can resolve their differences, but the pair have hardly spoken this week, with the manager increasingly frustrated by the player’s attitude.

Another reason United would prefer not to sell is that five other players look set to leave. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is desperate for the marquee signing to succeed.

But if Mourinho insists Pogba goes as part of his plan to close the gap on champions Manchester City, United would want between £120m to £140m to make a significant profit on their investment.

That would restrict the clubs capable of signing Pogba to Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, City and Chelsea. Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola is believed to have made contact with all of them in recent months.

Jose Mourinho must do more to help Paul Pogba succeed... he is a master at getting the best from players

* Jose Mourinho must do more to get the best out of midfielder Paul Pogba
* Mourinho has a track record of extracting the best from those he has managed
* CHRIS SUTTON: Paul Pogba is more of a showpony than a playmaker at United

Paul Pogba wants to create, to make things happen.

When Manchester United were playing with freedom at the start of the season and beating teams by four goals almost every week, Pogba was hailed as central to the team’s success.

While he was injured, United lost momentum and on his return he, like the rest of the team, had his wings clipped.

Under Jose Mourinho, it is all about the team, so this focus on Pogba must drive him mad.

For United’s manager, Pogba is just another player and he will feel he does not have to justify whether the midfielder plays.

I do not know if he will ever be the player Mourinho wants him to be. Yet given the fee and that the club stuck their neck out to re-sign him, Jose must work harder to make a success of Pogba.

He is a master at getting the best from players — just look at the 20 major trophies he has won. He usually gets it right but when he does not, it can go spectacularly wrong.

Paul Pogba is a player who wants to create and make things happen for Manchester United. But boss Jose Mourinho must try to help the French midfielder and get more out of him. Mourinho is a master at getting the best from players and has proven it across his career. If he cannot help Pogba he may have to accept the move has not worked out for either party

Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne thrived after being let go by Mourinho, but he would argue that he made the right decision at the time.

If Pogba is not giving him what he wants now, he will not play. If he is not playing, it would not come as a surprise if he left in the summer.

Mourinho has to do more to make a success of Pogba or admit that this move did not work out for either party.

JOSE WANTS POGBA TO 'KEEP A CERTAIN LEVEL'

Jose Mourinho has challenged Paul Pogba to maintain a level of consistency after the Frenchman’s Man-of-the-Match displays in two of Manchester United’s last three games.

Pogba showed his class in the Reds’ midweek win at Bournemouth during an 80-minute outing that Mourinho feels was even more impressive than his dominant second-half performance in the Manchester derby comeback.

“I told him after Manchester City that I'm not expecting him to be the Man of the Match every match,” Mourinho said at his press conference on Friday, ahead of the Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

“I'm not expecting him to be phenomenal every match, because that is really, really difficult, but to keep a certain level, that's the challenge. That's obvious.

“I think he was phenomenal against Manchester City. I think he was not good against West Bromwich Albion and again I think he was phenomenal against Bournemouth.

“If, against Manchester City, you have the two goals that people can say ‘wow, super decisive’, I think he played even better against Bournemouth since minute one. He was even more consistent, even more in control of the game. I think he was really, really good.”

Pogba will be hoping for another chance to exert his influence in Saturday's big game against Mauricio Pochettino's side at Wembley.

The Premier League’s second and fourth-placed teams meet at the national stadium at 17:15 BST, with United aiming to take another big step to winning the competition for the second time in three years – and extend Spurs’ trophy-less run to 11 seasons in the process.

“I don't know their objectives, I don't know the way they think their season,” said Jose, when asked about Tottenham’s barren spell. “I don't really know what their targets are. That's not my job, to think about it.

“I have to think about them as the team they are when I play against them. It's the third time we play them this season, so it's the third time I go deep on the analysing of them. And it's so easy to say – a fantastic football team.”

Paul Pogba insists that there is no problem between him and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

The relationship between the pair has appeared to be strained in recent weeks with Mourinho criticising Pogba.

But United's £89million record signing has moved to ease tensions at the club by stating that they both have great respect for each other.

'I do not have any problem with Mourinho, I do not think he has either,' Pogba told French TV programme Canal Football.

'He's [Mourinho] the coach, he's going to make choices and I as a player, I accept them. That is all.'

Sportsmail reported last week that Mourinho is prepared to sell Pogba this summer for £140m.

The club, however, are reluctant to sanction a move just two years after splashing out on getting him from Italian champions Juventus.

Pogba maintains that transfer rumours don't bother him but he didn't rule out a move away when asked about his future at Old Trafford.

He said: 'For now I'm at Manchester United, I really only think about the present. Transfers are not in my head.

'You know, if I listened to everyone, I would be everywhere.'

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba backed for Ballon d'Or glory by football legend Ronaldinho: 'He can make history'

* Paul Pogba has been backed to win the biggest solo accolade in world football
* The Frenchman has an admirer in Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho
* Pogba has been often criticised for inconsistency since his return to Manchester
* Ronaldinho believes Pogba has all the attributes to make history in the game

Paul Pogba has been backed to win the biggest personal accolade in world football by none other than decorated legend of the game Ronaldinho.

Despite coming under criticism in recent months for inconsistency in his game, Pogba is still rated by many as of the finest midfielders of the modern era.

An apparent rift with manager Jose Mourinho has sparked talk of a potential Old Trafford exit, though football icon Ronaldinho has backed Pogba to go from strength to strength and make history in the sport.

'He can win the Ballon d'Or, without a doubt,' Ronaldinho told Canal Football Club in a recent interview. 'I see Pogba as a friend, I don't see myself as his idol.

Ronaldinho himself scooped the honour in 2005 when dominating the European scene with Barca, and believes Pogba has all it takes to succeed in emulating his work.

Paul Pogba has been backed to go on and win the Ballon d'Or by football legend Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho, who won the award in 2005, believes Pogba can go on to make history in the game

'He is young, talented and he has the ability to play anywhere, he can play in a free role, defensive, as a runner or attacking.

'He has the characteristics of a player who can fill any position, he can make history.'

The Frenchman played a star role recently in helping United book their place in the final of the FA Cup with victory over Tottenham.

Pogba came up with a pivotal assist in the latter stages to pick out Alexis Sanchez and seal a 2-1 comeback victory.

It marked a return to the starting XI for Pogba, who was left out of the line-up in United's crucial Champions League last 16 clashes with Sevilla.

The midfielder's relationship with Mourinho has been the topic of much conversation since, though Ronaldinho feels much can be learned from the experienced Portuguese boss.

'I think Paul really has a lot to learn from Mourinho, who is one of the best coaches in the world. A coach who has won so many titles should be respected. In my case, it was the opposite.'

'He is already in a big club and he has everything needed to make history, whether it is this club or another he has to be where he feels happiest,' Ronaldinho added.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

POGBA: SEMI DISPLAY IS LEVEL WE WANT

Paul Pogba says he and his Manchester United team-mates are determined to carry the level of performance and mentality shown in the impressive Emirates FA Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham into the last matches of 2017/18, including the cup final.

The French midfielder was one of the Reds’ star men at Wembley and it was his cross that Alexis Sanchez headed home for the equaliser.

Next up for Jose Mourinho’s men is a clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and Pogba insists it’s vital that the performance level remains high.

“It was an objective of ours to be in the final in the cup. We had a very good result and a very good performance,” Pogba told MUTV. “That was the performance we were looking for, and the mentality and the teamwork we are looking for until the end of the season.”

Pogba was asked about what another come-from-behind win says about the squad’s character and attitude and he believes they’re qualities that will continue to stand the Reds in good stead over the coming seasons.

“What it says is that mentally we are strong and it showed that we can be a strong team altogether,” he insisted. “We have shown it during the season against the big teams, most of the time, but we need to keep it up against other teams as well. We need to keep playing altogether with the same mentality.”

Sunday’s clash represents another tough test but December’s superb victory over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium gives the Reds plenty of confidence going into what will be Arsene Wenger’s last game against United as Arsenal boss.

“It’s a big one. We need points,” declared Pogba. “They have a big game against Atletico so maybe that might help us if they are a bit tired. We know it’s going to be a hard game, it was a very hard game against them earlier in the season. But we had a very good team performance and David [De Gea] was amazing.

“We need that again and we need everybody to be at their best because when that happens it moves the team up [a level]. We’ve been great in the last game with the team performance and against the top teams you always have to produce that.”

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba's been a disappointment at Manchester United, insists Graeme Souness: 'He just needs instructions and sometimes a harsh word'

* Graeme Souness labelled Paul Pogba a disappointment since arriving in England
* Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is prepared to let the midfielder leave
* Jamie Redknapp insists the chemistry between player and manager is lacking
* Pogba believes he is being judged differently to other Premier League players

Paul Pogba has been a let-down since arriving at Manchester United and the Frenchman still has a lot of room to improve, insists Graeme Souness.

The 25-year-old has been criticised for his inconsistent displays for United and believes he has been judged differently to other midfielders.

But Souness, speaking on Sky Sports ahead of United's clash with Arsenal, denies the criticism is unfair and says Pogba needs discipline to bring the best out of him.

'He's not being judged unfairly,' Souness said. 'The relationship with Jose Mourinho isn't perfect, if I was managing him I'd be frustrated. He can be so much better, he's got tons of ability, wonderful athleticism.

'He seems himself as a bit of a playmaker, I don't I see him as a 25-year-old at the peak of his fitness levels, he should be going box-to-box,' Souness added.

'He just needs instruction and sometimes a harsh word, I get frustrated for him. A little bit flamboyant for my taste but I accept that's the modern world.'

Sportsmail understands that United manager Mourinho is willing to sell Pogba after running out of patience with the £89million star.

Paul Pogba has failed to live up to his £89million price tag since arriving at Old Trafford. Graeme Souness denies that Pogba's claim he is being judged differently to other midfielders. Souness said Pogba was 'a bit flamboyant for my taste' but accepted that's the modern game. Jamie Redknapp believes Pogba has lacked chemistry with his manager Jose Mourinho

And Souness' co-pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the connection has been lacking between Pogba and Mourinho since they both arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016.

'It hasn't worked out there,' said Redknapp. 'Chemistry between player and manager hasn't been there. There is a top player there but he's not Jose's time of player.'

Souness compared Pogba unfavorably to his compatriot N'Golo Kante and said the United midfielder fails to leave his mark on matches in the same manner as the Chelsea star.

'Kante has a way of impacting the game,' said Souness. 'Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard did too. You need to find a way. People are always going to judge him with what he is.

'He is meant to be "the" player here. He can do way more, the light's always going to be on you. It's always going to be your fault, or because of you.'

Pogba's inconsistent displays at United were encapsulated earlier this month, when he followed up an outstanding display in the Manchester derby where he scored twice with a below-par performance in the 1-0 home defeat by West Brom.
