Default Re: United Reserve Matches

09/09/2010 19:16 - ManUtd.com, Steve Bartram
Reserves: United 2 Stockport 0

Will Keane's first half penalty and John Cofie's first Reserves goal gave United a third successive Manchester Senior Cup victory, and put the Reds firmly in control of the competition's group stage.

The only negative aspect to the evening was provided by an ankle injury to Anderson. The Brazilian midfielder landed awkwardly after taking a shot early in the second half, and left the field. Positively, he was soon back in the United dugout rather than seeking treatment.

From his new vantage point, the Brazilian witnessed a second half continuation of the first period's trends; namely Magnus Eikrem pulling the strings for United and County goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams repelling almost everything thrown at him by the hosts.

The visitors had the ball in the net inside two minutes, but Jake Simpson's stabbed finish was correctly ruled out for the striker's foul on Scott Wootton in the build-up. Keane responded with United's first meaningful effort, but his speculative volley drifted comfortably wide.

Fon Williams was soon called into action, as Ritchie De Laet's curling shot forced a spectacular parry, and the County goalkeeper was regularly involved thereafter. He was given a let-off in the 15th minute, however, when Keane fired wastefully over after Corry Evans' shot had been impressively blocked.

At the opposite end Johnstone, making his first competitive Reserves start, showed quick reflexes to turn away Jordan Rose's close-range volley, but Fon Williams was soon back in the spotlight with a sharp low stop from Nicky Ajose.

As United's pressure grew, Stockport's defending became increasingly desperate; a trend characterised by Reiss Lee's rash challenge on De Laet as the Belgian sought to pull back for a colleague. Keane assumed the penalty-taking duties, and clinically fired his effort inside Fon Williams' post.

Two minutes later, Evans appealed for another spot-kick, but was left disappointed as Andy Halls' shoulder barge escaped censure, and caused the Northern Irish international enough discomfort to skew his shot wide.

Ravel Morrison, Anderson and Ajose all fired off-target as the first half wound to an end, but Fon Williams was called upon within two minutes of the restart to beat away Keane's fierce effort.

Ajose then had a goal chalked off for handball, having used his forearm to control a magnificent pass from Anderson, and the on-song winger then forced Fon Williams into a back-pedalling tip over the crossbar with a wonderfully measured chip.

Stockport's attacking threat was non-existent after the interval, with Wootton and Wes Brown untroubled in the centre of defence, and it seemed inevitable that United's pressure would soon tell.

Anderson was replaced by Cofie, and the in-form striker quickly got involved by chesting down Eikrem's chipped pass and volleying just off-target. Norwegian playmaker Eikrem then released Ajose, but his cute lob rattled the crossbar with Fon Williams well beaten.

Although United suffered quickfire scares when Danny Pilkington failed to connect with Jamie Proctor's superb cross, then fired over from the edge of the box, Fon Williams produced a marvellous double-save to thwart Ajose's cross-shot and Morrison's piledriver.

For all Stockport's admirable resistance, however, they will view United's clinching goal as entirely avoidable. Evans' threaded pass released Reece Brown, whose cross drifted behind a cluster of bodies to Cofie, and the striker had oodles of time to fire between three defenders and their unsighted goalkeeper for his first Reserves goal.

Cofie could have quickly doubled his tally, but fired against the crossbar from six yards after a fabulous nod back across goal from Keane. Victory assured, United continued to hunt for further openings, with eye-catching displays from Eikrem, Morrison and Ajose at the heart of the Reds' best industry, but two goals was sufficient to retain a perfect start to the new season.

United: Johnstone; R Brown, Wootton, W Brown (Gill, 65), De Laet; C Evans, Eikrem, Anderson (Cofie, 57); Ajose, W Keane, Morrison.
Subs not used: Devlin, Brady.

16/09/2010 19:55 - ManUtd.com, Steve Bartram
Reserves: United 1 Aston Villa 4

United's first game of the revamped Barclays Premier Reserve League ended in a comprehensive defeat, as Aston Villa winger Barry Bannan scored a hat-trick and inspired his side to victory.

The tricky Scottish winger curled home a sumptuous free-kick and cheekily chipped in Villa's third - either side of setting up Ciaran Clark for the visitors' third - in the first period, before adding a late penalty.

Nicky Ajose inspired a late rally from United by reducing the arrears with 10 minutes left, but the overriding positive for the hosts was a solid debut for summer signing Bebe.

The Portuguese winger completed all 90 minutes for the Reds, plugging away manfully on the right side of a front three despite regularly being surrounded by a flock of visiting defenders.

Villa's rearguard was superbly organised throughout, and it had to be to repel a string of dangerous crosses from Bebe, who regularly swapped flanks with Gabriel Obertan during the first period and appeared more than confident on either side. Fast, powerful and direct, the winger enjoyed an impressive bow.

Within three minutes, Bebe's pull-back found the onrushing Ravel Morrison, but the midfielder’s shot was superbly diverted behind by Clark’s block. Soon, the spotlight switched ends as Villa were awarded a dangerous free-kick, 20 yards from goal. Bannan took his chance magnificently, flighting the ball beautifully over the wall and inside Johnstone’s post, despite a full-length dive from the United stopper.

Villa's assuredness grew after the early goal, and Moustapha Salifou came within a yard of doubling the visitors’ lead with a speculative long-range effort. United hit back almost immediately, however, as Morrison took up possession inside the centre circle, plotted a course for goal and slammed a shot against the far upright.

As if to reassert his side’s early authority, Bannan came close to doubling the difference with a marvellous volley which arced towards Johnstone’s far post, but skidded just wide. Moments later, he curled a superb first-time effort against the top of the United crossbar.

Although the Reds slowly established a foothold in proceedings, the visitors’ menace only lay dormant. Bannan’s cross almost gave James Collins a simple second goal, but Oliver Gill brilliantly diverted the ball behind as the Villa striker prepared to pounce.

United’s respite was only temporary, however. The subsequent corner was only cleared as far as Bannan, whose deep return cross was missed by Gill, giving Clark the time to control the ball and lash a finish past the exposed Johnstone.

Bannan had been the outstanding performer of the first period, and he grabbed his second of the evening just before half-time. Found on the left-hand side of the area, the little Scot jinked into the box and clipped a measured finish over Johnstone and just below the crossbar, possibly via a slight nick off Scott Wootton.

The United right-back had the first opening of the second period, but he could only smash a left-footed shot against the inside of the Villa post, after Magnus Eikrem’s corner had found its way to him.

That early opening proved to be a false indication of how the second half would evolve, however, as Villa displayed the defensive resolve to compliment the attacking verve that had shone during the first period. Calm in possession, organised at the back and swift to regroup in numbers, the Villans frustrated United for long periods.

Substitute Ajose pulled a goal back with 13 minutes remaining, as he capitalised on a rare lapse in the visitors’ concentration; peeling off the far post to meet an Eikrem corner unchallenged, and sweep home a simple half-volley.

Villa’s response was immediate, and Bannan forced a stunning fingertip save from Johnstone, who managed to turn the winger’s 30-yard volley onto the crossbar and away to safety.

Nevertheless, United’s dander was up. In-form substitute John Cofie forced a low save from Elliot Parish with his first touch, while the Villa goalkeeper was also required to field a deflected shot from Wootton and a low, 20-yard effort from Ajose.

Villa continued to try and hit United on the break whenever possible and, after Johnstone had saved superbly in a one-on-one with Nathan Delfouneso, the Villa striker was brought down by Gill inside the area. Bannan clinically slotted home to seal a superb personal display and cap a deserved victory for his side.

United: Johnstone; Wootton, R Brown, Gill, De Laet; Morrison (Ajose 74), C Evans, Eikrem (Cofie 81); Obertan, W Keane (Brady 46), Bebe.
Subs not used: Devlin, Vermijl.

United Reserves are up and running in the Lancashire Senior Cup after winning a lively tie against Bury at Gigg Lane.

Five well-taken goals represented a great response from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to last week's 4-1 league reverse against Aston Villa. The line-up was much changed, however, with a number of reserve-team regulars possibly in line for senior involvement at Scunthorpe in Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie.

Robbie Brady provided the breakthrough for United after almost half an hour of resolute defending by the home side, curling a left-footed free-kick through the wall and in via the goalkeeper's hands. The Irishman netted again in the 34th minute with a toe-poke, after Scott Wootton's flick from a Magnus Eikrem corner ricocheted his way off an opponent.

Bury pulled a goal back seven minutes before half-time when Kyle Bennett intercepted a Reece Brown pass in the centre circle and raced away to feed Danny Carlton for a low finish. But although the Shakers came flying out of the traps for the second period, with a shot from dangerman Bennett deflecting wide only 20 seconds after the restart, United's abundance of young talent eventually told.

Granted, England Under-19 goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had to be alert to keep Bury at bay - his best save coming when another Bennett effort bounced up off the turf just inches in front of him - but the Reds always looked the more likely victors.

Nicky Ajose almost made it 3-1 when he struck the post from a tight position on the byline; eventually it was Marnick Vermijl who restored the Reds' two-goal cushion, a minute shy of the hour, with a goal that will haunt Richie Branagan. The Bury keeper beat two United players to meet Brady's ball over the top but he spilled it horribly, enabling Vermijl to tap into the unguarded goal. It was a fitting reward for the Belgian debutant, who'd launched some promising raids from right-back.

Second-half substitutes John Cofie and Ryan Tunnicliffe - both of whom featured in the Under-18s' draw at Sheffield United on Saturday - then completed a resounding 5-1 win.

Eikrem engineered the subs' strikes with a couple of sublime passes. For United's fourth goal on 76 minutes, he played a reverse pass into Nick Ajose's path inside the area and when the striker pulled it back, Cofie tucked home first time. For the final effort, nine minutes from time, Eikrem was the wall in a one-two - dinking the ball back to Tunnicliffe who needed just one cool touch to beat the advancing Branagan.

The night was not without its concerns for Solskjaer and his assistant Warren Joyce, with injuries enforcing the withdrawals of Oliver Gill before kick-off, Ravel Morrison in the first half and Vermijl in the second period. And although some slack possession at times threatened to offer Bury a way back into the game, the overall display was very positive and bodes well for Thursday's tie in the Manchester Senior Cup, at home to Bolton.

United: Johnstone; Vermijl (Cofie, 63), Wootton, R Brown, Fryers; C Evans (Tunnicliffe, 63), Eikrem, Morrison (M Keane); Stewart, Ajose, Brady. Sub not used: Devlin.

Manchester Senior Cup
Moss Lane, 23 September 2010

MANCHESTER UNITED 4

BOLTON WANDERERS 0

Reserves: United 4 Bolton 0

Nicky Ajose hit a 16-minute hat-trick to give United's Reserves a convincing Manchester Senior Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers.

The in-form striker, who received a senior squad number earlier this week, capped a memorable few days with a quickfire second-half treble at Moss Lane, aided and abetted by another sublime display of playmaking from Magnus Eikrem.

A frustrating first period for the Reds yielded little excitement, but a storming second half display saw the woodwork rattled three times and a host of other opportunities go begging, in addition to Ajose's hat-trick and a scorching injury-time strike from John Cofie.

The deadlock should have been broken inside the first minute, as Ajose burst through on goal. The forward's touch took him slightly wide, however, and Trotters goalkeeper Rob Lainton was able to block his shot.

Although Cameron Stewart peppered Lainton's goal with a spate of early shots, narrowly missing the target with the majority, Ajose's early opportunity was not a precursor for an entertaining first half.

Excitement proved a rarity as the two sides cancelled one another out for long periods. Bolton's closest call with taking the lead was a header from Tom Eaves which dipped onto the roof of Conor Devlin's net.

Robbie Brady looked to have opened the scoring as curled in a low finish, but the Irish winger was harshly adjudged offside. Shortly after the restart, Brady was involved again; drawing a fine stop from Lainton with a shot from the edge of the area.

United's start to the second period continued to produce opportunities. Stewart somehow contrived to head wide after a sublime run and cross from Obertan, then Corry Evans produced a back-pedalling save from Lainton with a long range effort.

The Trotters stopper then produced a wonderful reaction save from Brady's flicked header. From the ensuing corner, Ajose fired against the base of Lainton's post from six yards out.

The on-song forward wouldn't be denied for much longer, however, and he broke the deadlock just after the hour. Brady fed Evans, and the midfielder's perfect pass caught the Bolton defence square, giving Ajose the space to arc a fine finish inside Lainton's far post.

Having finally broken Bolton's resistance, United continued to turn the screw. Stewart drilled just wide with a snapshot from the edge of the area, before Eikrem superbly negotiated a ruck of bodies and side-footed a shot against Lainton's upright.

Stewart then sprung the visitors' offside trap again. Fronted with the choice of shooting or squaring for Ajose to bag his second goal, the winger smashed a shot against the underside of the crossbar, to the striker's clear displeasure.

Ajose's ire was soon cooled, however, when he bagged his second goal of the evening. Eikrem picked out Obertan's run with a superb pass, and the Frenchman's cross was fired home at the far post by Ajose.

Bolton rallied briefly as Adam Blakeman forced Devlin into a save at close-quarters but United's control was almost total, and it soon yielded Ajose's hat-trick goal - and it was by far the best of his treble.

A United move began with calm defending from Reece Brown, who fed Obertan. The ball was in turn ferried to Eikrem, who meandered around midfield and curled a sublime pass into the path of Ajose, who sprinted in on goal and toe-poked a finish underneath Lainton.

Eikrem continued to torment the visitors with his play-making, and he picked out substitute John Cofie with another inch-perfect pass, only for the in-form striker to overhit his lob. Eikrem then drilled a 30-yard free-kick narrowly past the post.

Time remained for one more goal; and it was another cracker. A series of neat touches and flicks culminated in Obertan slipping a pass to Cofie, and his shot rocketed past Lainton and inside the post.

It was a fitting end to a magnificent second-half display from the Reds, who have now registered four group stage wins in this season's Manchester Senior Cup and appear certain to feature in this season's final.

United: Devlin; R Brown, Wootton, Fryers, Gill; C Evans, Eikrem, Obertan; Brady (Tunnicliffe, 72), Ajose (Hussain, 79), Stewart (Cofie, 72).
Sub not used: Johnstone.
