Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the only goal as Manchester United were able to grind out a 1-0 victory over Zorya Luhansk.

Jose Mourinho's side were far from their best at Old Trafford but ultimately found a way through after Ibrahimovic pounced to head home a scuffed effort from substitute Wayne Rooney.

The Ukrainian visitors ensured the Red Devils had a far from routine evening on home turf, but they just about did enough to get their Europa League campaign up and running following defeat to Feyenoord in their opening group game.

Assured performance, strode out of the back four nicely and headed everything thrown in his direction. The Smalling of last season.

Never, ever going to challenge Luke Shaw for the permanent spot at left back. Olexsandr Karavaev flew past him during one particularly galling moment.

Marouane Fellaini - 6

Got stuck in but not the driving force Jose Mourinho would have hoped for alongside Paul Pogba in central midfield.


Paul Pogba is still finding his fight but passed the ball well to get United on the move

Found his range of passing to a degree after the break and popped play about nicely. Still feeling his way into this team.

Jesse Lingard- 6.5

Bright when he came hunting deep for possession and created decent angles for United. Felt as if there was more to come, much like others in red shirts.

Juan Mata - 6.5

A victim of the night’s theme, with United good until a point. Did try to break the lines, however, and will be a key man this year.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Doesn’t matter where he plays, Rashford’s a real livewire and that was true again. Thunderous first-half strike almost broke the bar and the teenager is a menace out wide.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 7

Right place, right time for the big Swede, who nodded in United’s winner - their first shot on target. Slightly subdued in the opening 45 minutes.

Two minutes after being introduced his mishit found its way to Ibrahimovic. Might not have been the best effort but took up a good position off his marker.

Anthony Martial (for Mata, 74) - 6

Minutes under his belt after the calf injury sustained at Watford.

Ashley Young (for Fosu-Mensah, 74) - 6

Just filled in for the final portion as United saw out the win.
