Re: UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship 2011
Under-21s squad numbers for Euro 2011 Finals in Denmark revealed. With the clock ticking down to England's first game at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Denmark, Three Lions Coach Stuart Pearce has revealed the squad numbers his players will wear. The squad travels to their tournament base near the Jutland town of Vejle on Wednesday ahead of their opening Group B encounter with Spain on Sunday night in Herning. England then play Ukraine on Wednesday 15 June, again in Herning, before meeting Czech Republic on Sunday 19 June in Viborg. All three games will kick off at 7.45pm (BST) and will be screened on Sky Sports. But whether or not the squad numbers (listed below) will give any guide to who will start in the matches only Pearce will know. England Squad 1 Frankie Fielding (Derby County) 2 Michael Mancienne (Chelsea) 3 Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea) 4 Fabrice Muamba (Bolton Wanderers) 5 Chris Smalling (Manchester United) 6 Phil Jones (Blackburn Rovers) 7 Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa) 8 Jordan Henderson (Sunderland) 9 Danny Welbeck (Manchester United) 10 Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea) 11 Scott Sinclair (Swansea City) 12 Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal) 13 Alex McCarthy (Reading), 14 Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur) 15 James Tomkins (West Ham United) 16 Jack Cork (Chelsea) 17 Tom Cleverley (Manchester United) 18 Henri Lansbury (Arsenal) 19 Jack Rodwell (Everton) 20 Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur) 21 Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa) 22 Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town) 23 Jason Steele (Middlesbrough) [/CENTER]

Re: UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship 2011
Third time lucky?
Wednesday, 08 June, 2011 The squad head to Denmark today for their third successive Euro Finals. By David Barber Only one team has qualified for the UEFA Under-21 Championship Finals of 2007, 2009 and 2011 – England! By the time Stuart Pearce was appointed Head Coach early in 2007, England’s Under-21s had already made it through to the EURO 2007 Finals in Holland by beating Germany 3-0 over the two legs of a play-off. Pearce’s charges warmed up with a 5-0 friendly win against Slovakia at Norwich on 5 June. Six days later they took on Czech Republic in their first Finals match in Arnhem’s Gelredome. It wasn’t quite the sparkling game that the build-up had promised but England were given a great opportunity to take all three Group B points when Hubnik handled inside the box on 88 minutes. Unfortunately, Leroy Lita, a 64th-minute substitute for James Milner, shot wide from the spot and the game finished goalless. Three days later, on 14 June, a 17,000 crowd inside the same stadium saw England score twice in two minutes to put them in the driving seat against the Italians. David Nugent headed home from Leighton Baines’ cross on 24 minutes and Lita ran onto Ashley Young’s pass to thump a shot past Viviano for 2-0. But Italy, facing elimination at that point, hit back to equalise in the second half through Chiellini and Aquilani. England reached the last four for the first time in nearly 20 years after beating Serbia, who had already won through to the semis, 2-0 in Nijmegen on 17 June. Milner’s free-kick found Steven Taylor and he guided the ball back for Lita to nod home after five minutes. Matt Derbyshire, subbing for Lita, doubled the lead with a powerful shot beyond Kesic. Pearce’s team came so close to upsetting their Dutch hosts in a semi-final before 23,000 in Heerenveen three days later. First Rigters equalised Lita’s 39th-minute effort in the dying moments of normal time. Then Holland, the eventual European champions, edged a protracted shootout 13-12 that left players, coaches and fans drained of emotion. England, 5-4 winners of a tough play-off with Wales, lined up against Finland in their opening Group B fixture of the EURO 2009 Finals in Sweden on 15 June. They grabbed the lead on 15 minutes, Lee Cattermole rolling the ball home under Jaakkola, before Michael Mancienne was red-carded for hauling down Sadik from behind. Finnish skipper Sparv, a former Southampton team-mate of Theo Walcott and Martin Cranie, sent Joe Hart the wrong way from the spot. But ten-man England ground out a 2-1 victory, Micah Richards heading in from Milner’s corner on 53 minutes. Three days later, in Gothenburg, second-half strikes from Fraizer Campbell and Milner took England through to the semis after beating Spain 2-0. There was still one Group B game to play, England drawing 1-1 with Germany in Halmstad on 22 June. Castro scored inside five minutes but Jack Rodwell’s leveller on the half-hour gave England top spot. Then Pearce’s battlers reached England’s first Final for a quarter of a century after knocking out their Swedish hosts on penalties in Gothenburg on 26 June. The game itself finished 3-3. England were given the perfect start, defender Cranie rifling home from Milner’s corner after just 53 seconds. Nedum Onuoha kept the momentum going with a second goal on 27 minutes and Bjarsmyr diverted Cattermole’s flick into his own net for an apparently unassailable 3-0 advantage before half-time. But the Swedes fought back to make it 3-3 and force extra-time. Campbell received a second yellow for sliding into Lustig, Sweden’s Berg hit the bar and Milner missed the target with our first kick in the shootout. But Hart, Cattermole, Johnson, Walcott and Gibbs were all successful from the spot as England won it 5-4. England’s hopes of lifting the trophy for the first time since 1984 were dashed by Horst Hrubesch’s Germany in the Final, watched by 18,000 in Malmo on 29 June. Pearce’s side were confident at the start, Walcott almost finding the net after three minutes, but midfield playmaker Ozil was outstanding as the Germans scored four goals without reply. Two years on and England earned their place in the EURO 2011 Finals, to be hosted by Denmark, with second place in their qualifying group and a 2-1 aggregate play-off success against Romania last October. Can they go one better and win the Final this time?
