It is certainly not an easy act to follow but it is so far, so good for Manchester United's latest 'New David Beckham' - Oliver Norwood.

With severe injury problems biting at Old Trafford, Norwood was in the squad for the Champions League group game in Wolfsburg.

And, even at the age of 18, manager Sir Alex Ferguson would not be afraid to hand the free kick duties to the Burnley-born midfielder, who has been playing regularly for the champions' reserves.

Norwood has also made a couple of impressive contributions for the Northern Ireland under-21 team, scoring from free kicks in the recent games against Germany and the Czech Republic to prompt calls for inclusion in Nigel Worthington's senior set-up.

As well as his ability from dead ball situations, Norwood, who has been with the club since the age of seven, has impressive passing skills but also relishes the physical side of the game and his long-range shooting helped him to nine goals from 28 appearances for United's academy team last season.

Jonny Evans was given the chance by Northern Ireland before he was a regular in the first team at Old Trafford and, with Worthington doing nothing to play down Norwood's potential, it appears only a matter of time before he graduates to the senior team for his country and his club.

"The lad is a genius, " Worthington told the News of the World in November. "He is going to be a very good player. What he can do with the ball from free kicks is remarkable. From the day I first worked with him, you could see his technique and ability were excellent.

"In fact, his quality at free kick situations is amazing for his age. You always know that eight or nine times out of ten, he is going to score when he places the ball for a free. It is a great talent to have on top of his impressive general play."

Norwood acknowledges that he needs to work on his pace but appears well prepared to put in the graft necessary to make it to the top.

He told www.manutd.com: "I like to get on the ball and pass it, and have plenty of shots at goal. I wouldn't say that makes me greedy, but I think I've got quite a good strike. So if I'm in or around the box then I might as well use it.

"My speed is probably my weakest point. I'd like to improve it, but I more of a Michael Carrick-type player, passing the ball, rather than Owen Hargreaves, who bombs around all over the pitch.

"If you're a midfielder, you can't help but appreciate Paul Scholes' ability. He's class. When the youth team have finished training we all go over to the first-team pitches and watch them.

"I also played alongside Hargreaves in a training game and he was different class. You've got plenty of players to learn from here."

If Norwood continues at this rate, Old Trafford youngsters will be talking about him in the same glowing terms in the next couple of decades.

Oliver Norwood believes his experience of sharing a training pitch with legends like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs can help him fuel Carlisle United’s promotion dream.

The teenage Manchester United midfielder, who joined the Blues on a month’s loan yesterday, is already eyeing a longer spell at Brunton Park with Greg Abbott’s high-flying team.

Set-piece specialist Norwood is poised to make his debut against Brighton tomorrow (Brunton Park, 3pm), a game that will be watched by Red Devils reserve coach Warren Joyce.

And the 19-year-old admits he is itching to get started with the Cumbrians after serving his apprenticeship at Old Trafford with some of the greats of the game.

“It’s a dream come true to be training with players like Scholes and Giggs,” Norwood told The Cumberland News.

“Scholes is still probably the best passer of the ball in the world and it is great to go to people like that for advice.

“The manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] is also very good. People get the impression that he doesn’t speak to the younger players but he always pulls you in if you’re doing well, and he will let you know if you are doing something wrong.

“He was more than happy to let me come here and I’m grateful for that. I just want to get out on the pitch and play. I would be more than happy to stay for longer and try to help the club get into the Championship.”

Manager Abbott was putting Norwood through his paces in training today before deciding whether to field the 19-year-old as a direct replacement for captain Paul Thirlwell, who has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a knee injury.

The signs are that the young Northern Ireland international will get the nod at the base of Abbott’s midfield diamond, while the Blues boss was cagey over who will wear the captain’s armband against the Seagulls.

Norwood was convinced to join United by defender James Chester, who has been on loan with the Blues from Manchester United since the start of the season. The ball-playing midfielder, compared to a young David Beckham at Old Trafford and described as a “genius” by Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington, is confident he can live up to expectations as he prepares to make his first-team debut at Carlisle.

“You carry an expectation with you because you are coming from Manchester United, but hopefully I can prove that I’m good enough to play here,” said Norwood, who has been on the books at Old Trafford since he was seven.

“Luckily James was at Carrington on Wednesday so when it was decided I was coming up to Carlisle, I spoke to him for half-an-hour. He told me what a great place it is and that I would really enjoy myself. I jumped at the chance.

“I have researched the club on the internet and I know they are on a good run. James says the club is really going forward and I hope I can be part of something.”

Norwood made his international debut in a friendly against Montenegro last month despite having yet to make his first club appearance.

And he hopes his time with the Blues will help him fulfil his dream of becoming a first-team star at Old Trafford.

“I have played for every age group, including the last 18 months in the reserves,” he said. “We won everything we could win with the reserves last season so it was a good year. Hopefully one day I will get to play in the first team.”

Joyce, who takes Manchester United’s reserve team along with legendary striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will check on both Chester and Norwood at Brunton Park tomorrow.

The former Hull City midfielder is a close friend of Abbott and played a key role in persuading Ferguson to allow both young players to join the Blues.

Thirlwell yesterday learned that he had suffered medial knee ligament damage in last Saturday’s 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, while fellow midfielder Marc Bridge-Wilkinson is set for a further two weeks on the sidelines as he struggles with a toe injury. Winger Kevan Hurst should return to training on Monday.

Oliver Norwood did a passable Paul Scholes impression in Thursday's reserve win against Everton, spraying the ball around in a manner reminiscent of United's wonderful playmaker.

The Northern Ireland international also broke his duck at second-string level with both goals in the 2-0 win and was a little unlucky not to claim a remarkable hat-trick.

After his virtuoso display, Norwood explained why his efforts are starting to be rewarded and outlined the winning mentality running through the club.

"It was a good performance," he told MUTV. "I've been working hard on my fitness and getting forward a bit more.
"Hopefully, we can win this league and retain the title from last year. It's part of this club at any level - the youth team will hopefully win the FA Youth Cup and we will win whatever we can. Every team has got to try and win trophies."

Norwood also revealed there is real desire amongst his team-mates and great camaraderie at Old Trafford.

"In training, there's arguments every day because everyone wants to win that much," he added. "There's a good atmosphere in the dressing room as we're all trying to win for each other.

"It's a great set of lads with no individuals. You see individual skill but we work hard as a team together and hopefully you can see that coming through."
