10 EASTER MEMORIES FOR MANCHESTER UNITED

We reflect on 10 Manchester United memories from Easter periods over the past 30 years...

1988: Liverpool 3 United 3
Anfield on Easter Monday and the stuff of legend. Bryan Robson converted Peter Davenport's cross to hand United an early boost against leaders Liverpool, but the joy was shortlived. Peter Beardsley and Gary Gillespie turned things around by half-time and Steve McMahon punted a spectacular third. Colin Gibson was sent off for a second yellow card but, somehow, United battled back. Robson's deflected drive gave Alex Ferguson's men hope and Gordon Strachan's coollest of finishes, and iconic celebration, rescued a point for the 10 men.

1993: United 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1 | Coventry 0 United 1
A double-header for the Reds of huge significance. Everybody will recall Steve Bruce's two late headers against Sheffield Wednesday to turn things around en route to the first Premier League title but the 1-0 victory at Coventry City on Easter Monday, courtesy of a belter by Denis Irwin, was the perfect follow-up to that pivotal and emotional triumph over the Owls.

1995: Leicester 0 United 4
A biggest win of the Easter period in recent times was a 4-0 demolition of Leicester City at Filbert Street. United played some marvellous football, with Lee Sharpe getting the ball rolling before setting up the second for Andy Cole. When Bruce had an attempt cleared off the line, Cole rammed in his second and the Reds' third, before a delightful cross by Paul Scholes was met on the stretch by Paul Ince for the coup de grace.

1996: Manchester City 2 United 3
A vital fixture at both ends of the table was decided by a Ryan Giggs rocket. Shown the way to goal by Keith Curle, he duly obliged by thrashing home a corker that stunned Maine Road. City had twice hit back, replying to an Eric Cantona penalty and Cole's effort, through Mikhail Kavelashvili and Uwe Rosler, but the Reds had the last say in a Double-winning campaign.

2000: Southampton 1 United 3 | United 3 Chelsea 2
A title-clinching win at Southampton and all done at a canter. David Beckham's trademark free-kick set the Reds on the way and, after a Francis Benali own goal, Beckham turned provider to set up Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's clinical finish. Marian Pahars's consolation meant little and Chelsea provided a guard of honour on the Easter Monday at Old Trafford before succumbing to a 3-2 defeat, with Dwight Yorke netting twice and Solskjaer on the scoresheet again.

2001: United 4 Coventry 2
United would clinch the Premier League crown later in the day, when Arsenal slumped to a shock 3-0 home reverse to Middlesbrough, but relegation-haunted Coventry fought all the way at Old Trafford. Yorke and John Hartson both scored doubles in the first half and it took a couple of beauties from Giggs and Paul Scholes to settle matters.

2002: Leeds 3 United 4
David O'Leary's Leeds refused to lie down but were beaten 4-3 in a thriller of an early kick-off at Elland Road. Scholes's opener was cancelled out by Mark Viduka before the visitors took full control. Solskjaer struck twice and Beckham galloped down the right flank, deep into Leeds territory, before squaring for Giggs to apply the finish. It looked all over at 4-1 but Ian Harte and Lee Bowyer ensured a nervous finale.

2008: United 3 Liverpool 0
Liverpool had no answer to the rampant Reds, particularly after Javier Mascherano foolishly talked himself into a red card. The breakthrough came when Pepe Reina came off his line to meet a Wayne Rooney cross but the ball found the net off Wes Brown's back. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a corner by Nani for his 34th goal of the season and Nani added a spectacular third when taking a touch before rifling home from the edge of the box.

2012: United 2 QPR 0

A win over Queens Park Rangers nudged United eight points clear at the Premier League summit but the game was not without controversy. QPR felt Shaun Derry was harshly sent off for bringing down Ashley Young, but Rooney nervelessly dispatched the penalty past Paddy Kenny. Scholes, something of an Easter goals specialist, cracked home his third strike since coming out of retirement to seal the points.

2015: United 3 Aston Villa 1
Rooney produced a moment of magic as Louis van Gaal's team saw off Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford. Ander Herrera scored twice, the first just before half-time, but it was Rooney who took centre stage when getting a toe to an Angel Di Maria centre and spinning to hammer the ball into the top corner of the net.

UNITED CONFIRM 2018/19 TICKET PRICES

Season and match ticket prices frozen for seventh consecutive season
Introduction of new £15 tickets for 18 to 25-year-olds in the Stretford End

Manchester United has confirmed that season and match ticket prices will be frozen for a seventh consecutive season, ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, making an eighth price freeze in nine years.

In that time, fans have enjoyed a price reduction of nearly 17 per cent in real terms.

In addition, the club has announced a new £15 ticket for fans aged 18-25, with pitch-side seats in the lower Stretford End, reinforcing the club’s commitment to a vibrant atmosphere, while also helping younger fans to watch live, affordable football.

Other concessions include:

• £10 per game Season Ticket price for Under 16s (Family areas)

• Half-price tickets for Under 18s & 65+ (prices from £14 per game)

• 25 per cent discount for 18 to 20-year-olds

Also, supporters will receive a 25 per cent reduction for Carabao Cup home games.

Manchester United’s Group Managing Director Richard Arnold commented: “The club enjoys unparalleled support and we recognise the sacrifice many fans make to watch the team home and away. Continuing the freeze in match and season tickets for next season is driven by our belief in supporting fans attending our games.

“The introduction of reduced ticket prices for young adults in the Stretford End lower tier stems from suggestions generated by fan groups through our Fans’ Forum, aimed at building on the tradition of vibrant support.”

Manchester United to offer thousands of £15 tickets to 18-25-year olds to re-inject life into the Stretford End

* Manchester United have been examining options to improve the atmosphere

* United also revealed a plan to try and boost noise levels in the Stretford End

Manchester United are aiming to re-inject life into the Stretford End by offering thousands of £15 tickets to 18-25-year olds.

The Premier League club have been examining options to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford following criticism from supporters and manager Jose Mourinho.

This morning they announced a price freeze on season tickets for a seventh year in a row. And at the same time, United officials revealed a plan to try and boost noise levels in what was once an iconic stand which offered ferocious backing.

They have introduced a new £15 ticket in the lower tier of the Stretford End which can only be bought by those between the age of 18 and 25. They say it ‘reinforces the club’s commitment to a vibrant atmosphere while helping younger fans to watch live, affordable football’.

United also state that the series of price freezes is the equivalent of a 17 per cent saving. They are also offering half-price season tickets to Under 18s and Over 65s and a 25 per cent discount for 18 to 20-year-olds.

CLUBS AGREE TO CONTINUE VAR TESTING

Manchester United have agreed with other Premier League clubs to continue advance testing of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) throughout the 2018/19 season.

The decision at a meeting of all 20 clubs on Friday came with a view to introducing the system, which has divided opinion among fans and media alike, in the top flight in the future.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football, and key learnings from the many competitions using it elsewhere.

“The clubs recognised and are grateful for the substantial developments made by PGMOL Managing Director Mike Riley and his team. The clubs agreed that advanced testing will continue to the end of Season 2018/19 to make further improvements to the system, especially around communication inside the stadium and for those following at home and around the world.

“The Premier League will also be asking for VAR to be used more extensively in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in Season 2018/19.”

WHAT IS VAR?

The VAR, a fifth member of the team of match officials who is in constant communication with the on-field referee, has caused controversy since being trialled in the FA Cup and League Cup in England from January this year.

It is designed to only intervene for four major incidents – goals, red cards, penalties and mistaken identity – and will be in operation at the World Cup finals in Russia this summer.

HOW VAR HAS AFFECTED UNITED

The system has been employed in two games involving the Reds so far this term, in the FA Cup ties against Huddersfield and Brighton respectively.

There was a major talking point in the first half of United’s 2-0 fifth-round win over the Terriers when Juan Mata’s strike was disallowed, following a lengthy delay, for offside after referee Kevin Friend consulted with VAR Neil Swarbrick, who was monitoring several screens from a London studio.

Despite having a goal ruled out, Mata was philosophical about the decision and gave VAR his backing. “On the pitch, I didn’t know if I was offside or not because it was I think the line was very tight,” the Spaniard told MUTV after the game.

“I’m up for VAR and I think it is good for football especially to make important decisions and make it a little bit fairer but it seems like today it was not a very clear the decision against us and me. The good thing was that it was not needed [the goal] because we won anyway but I think we all wished it was quicker. I celebrated and it didn’t count.”

VAR had a much quieter night when it made its debut at Old Trafford last month, as there was no need for referee Andre Marriner to refer to the system during the Reds’ 2-0 quarter-final victory over Brighton.

United will also be hoping it won’t cause any controversy when it will be in place for the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next weekend, with Marriner in the hotseat as the VAR to assist referee Anthony Taylor.

WHAT JOSE THINKS OF VAR

The boss is broadly in agreement with the system and feels it is time for the match officials to receive some support.

Speaking in a recent MUTV interview, Mourinho said: “When people ask us if we like it, if we don’t like it, if we agree with it or don’t agree with it, I think honestly it’s a question for the referees.

“They want to perform the best they can, they don’t like to make mistakes. And sometimes they make mistakes because it’s a human mistake and you cannot go over it unless you have some technological support. So, if the referees are happy with that technological support, then yes, let’s go for the VAR. I think, from my perspective, I like the feeling.”

UNITED DUO SHORTLISTED FOR PFA AWARDS

Manchester United have two representatives on the PFA awards' shortlists for the main prizes for the 2017/18 season.

David De Gea, who is looking to clinch a place in the PFA Team of the Season for a fifth time in the Premier League, is in the running for the overall PFA Players' Player of the Year accolade.

The Spaniard is one of the candidates to succeed Chelsea's N'Golo Kante after another fabulous campaign keeping goal for the Reds. The other five names in the frame are Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane and David Silva (all Manchester City), Mo Salah (Liverpool) and Harry Kane (Tottenham).

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has a place on the shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year trophy as the 20-year-old continues his excellent form for United and England. The forward recently scored both goals in the memorable win over Liverpool at Old Trafford and has regularly showed off his talents.

The other youngsters nominated are Ederson, Raheem Sterling and Sane (all Manchester City), Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham) and Spurs striker Kane.

Wayne Rooney was the last United man to win the senior prize, in 2010, completing a four-year dominance of the trophy by the Reds. The last time we succeeded in the Young Player category was in 2007, when Cristiano Ronaldo came out on top.

UNITED STARS AT FOUNDATION'S DREAM DAY

The Manchester United first team were out in force to make special memories for excited fans at Manchester United Foundation’s latest Dream Day.

The full team, including Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and David De Gea, made dreams come true at the Aon Training Complex for fans who suffer from serious and life-limiting illnesses. Alexis Sanchez also attended his first Dream Day since joining the Reds in January.

The heart-warming event takes place twice a season with supporters travelling from across the UK to meet their footballing heroes and watch first-team training from the Jimmy Murphy Visitors’ Centre.

Chris Smalling, who has supported the Foundation and attended many Dream Days over his eight seasons with the club, said: “These are times where all the team can come together and put some smiles on faces.

"Anything we can do to lift spirits because they are having tough times, just spending the afternoon with them, can make a real difference.”

Fans' favourite Paul Pogba added: “We have the wonderful chance here to give young people happiness and it is very important for us to see them smile. They’ve been telling me some nice things, talking about my hairstyles, doing some dabs; the kids are happy and we just have to think about them and be grateful.”

Among the group of 16 guests at the training ground today was 15-year-old Scott from Skipton, North Yorkshire, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was delighted to meet the team, especially his idol Pogba: “It’s like a dream come true, I never thought this would happen. I got to meet Pogba and he sat next to me and I asked him a few questions, like what hairstyle he’s going to have for the FA Cup final but I think it’s a secret!

"Today has boosted me and made me happier than I was and it gives me something to take away and share with my friends and family.”

Ruth, nine, from Denton was also thrilled to be a part of the day: “I’m super excited to be here; Juan Mata just spoke to me and he’s really funny, and I’ve met lots more players too,” she said. “It’s made me feel happy and made me feel a lot better.”
