Re: [EPL] Man Utd vs Sunderland
Ben Foster will start against Sunderland, says Sir Alex Ferguson
Ben Foster has been assured that he will start against Sunderland this weekend by the Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. Foster was heavily criticised for his performance during United's 4-3 win over Manchester City earlier this month, leading to speculation that Ferguson would drop him in favour of the Poland international Tomasz Kuszczak, who performed creditably on his first appearance of the season against Wolves in the Carling Cup. Ferguson initially stood by Foster and was rewarded with a clean sheet at Stoke last weekend, but Kuszczak was in goal for last night's 2-1 win over the German champions Wolfsburg. But while Foster was denied an opportunity to impress the watching England coach, Fabio Capello, yesterday, he will get another chance on Saturday, as Capello is due back at Old Trafford 24 hours before he names his squad for the final two World Cup qualifying games against Ukraine and Belarus. "Tomasz Kuszczak produced a very good performance against Wolves last week and we felt he deserved to play another game," said Ferguson. "It wasn't going to be last Saturday, though, because we had to give Ben some support after that difficult game against Manchester City. "It was a good opportunity for us to play Tomasz tonight but Ben will play on Saturday." Ferguson also feels last night's match-winner Michael Carrick is beginning to find his feet after a slow start to the season. Carrick had been so sporadically used that some speculated he had fallen foul of Ferguson but the midfielder produced his best performance of the season at Old Trafford, capping a fine display by curling home the winner 12 minutes from time. "It won't do Michael any harm to score," said Ferguson. "That applies to all players but he really did enjoy himself. We think he is generally slow to start the season for us. "It has been that way since he came to the club. It is normally around October when he starts to get into his stride and we are seeing that again." http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...ted-sunderland |

Match Pack: Sunderland Sir Alex faces another of his former players on Saturday as the Reds attempt to stay ahead of the pack. Here are all the facts and stats on Sunderland’s visit to Old Trafford... Form guide The Black Cats have made a decent start under new manager Steve Bruce, obtaining 12 points from their opening seven games and reaching eighth in the table. The free-scoring Darren Bent has been in fine form, grabbing six goals already for his new club. Early-season victories over Bolton and Blackburn, albeit with a loss to Chelsea sandwiched in between, set the tempo. They have also beaten Hull and Wolves quite convincingly, proving how clinical they can be in front of goal. However, defeats to Stoke and Burnley show that Sunderland still have some inconsistency to eradicate from their game. Former Reds striker Fraizer Campbell got off the mark in the Carling Cup last week so could be a threat if selected. United are well and truly up and running and will want to retain top spot having gained it with last weekend's victory at Stoke. Ins and outs Sunderland will come to Old Trafford with a full complement of stars after five days of rest compared to United’s two. The Reds will be without Michael Owen after his early withdrawal from the Wolfsburg match on Wednesday - however he will be fit to face Bolton in a fortnight's time. Ji-sung Park will hopefully be available after suffering from a virus in midweek. Edwin van der Sar is "not far away" from a return, according to Sir Alex, while Brazilian right-back Rafael is said to be "training well." Manager Ex-United skipper Bruce is the third Sunderland boss in a row to have spent time at Old Trafford, following Roy Keane and former reserves coach Ricky Sbragia. Bruce has been a success in virtually every job he’s taken, including guiding Birmingham to the Premier League and establishing Wigan as a top-flight club. He’ll want to improve his personal record against United though, having earned only two points from a possible 24. Star man Bent has recaptured the form that convinced Tottenham to buy him from Charlton from over £16million just over two years ago. Six goals in his first seven games suggest he's well on his way to justifying the £11million it took for Bruce to bring him to the Stadium of Light. He is deadly from the penalty spot, too, so United's defenders will have to really concentrate on their tackles in the box. Referee Alan Wiley is one of the top flight's longest-serving referees. He has taken charge of eight games so far this season, including United's only defeat at Burnley, and has shown just one red card - to Bolton's Sean Davis in their 3-2 loss to Liverpool. Wiley was also on duty at Old Trafford for the recent Manchester derby but only as fourth official. Rivals watch In the pick of the weekend’s games, Chelsea and Liverpool lock horns at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (16:00 BST). Arsenal take on Blackburn at home in Sunday's lunchtime kick-off, while Manchester City again wait until Monday, when they travel to Aston Villa. |

Re: [EPL] Man Utd vs Sunderland
Preview MU vs Sunderland
