Klo formasi harapanku:
Amos, Rafael, Smalling, Evans, Fabio, Bebe, Gibson, Fletcher, Obertan, Macheda, Owen.

Cadangan:

Fergie confirms hitman's Iron outing
eatsleepsport.com - Mon, 20 Sep 2010 15:52

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that striker Michael Owen will start Manchester United's Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old, who joined United on a free transfer in summer 2009, has failed to force his way into the Red Devils' side so far this season as he has been left to watch the action from the substitutes' bench. And, following Owen's recent admission that he felt like his career was passing him by, Ferguson is set to give him an opportunity to prove his worth with a start in the third-round tie at Championship side Scunthorpe this week.

Looking ahead to the game against the Iron at Glanford Park, Ferguson said: "I understand Michael's frustration - he's exactly right - but it's because Berbatov started the season so well, then the international break came. It's difficult.

"I agree he probably thinks it's passing him by, but he's doing well in training, never misses a session. He'll start against Scunthorpe and he'll get enough football this season."

Unfashionable Scunthorpe dream of knocking out Manchester United in the Carling Cup, but it won’t happen

September 20th, 2010

Few teams conjure up more of a lower league image than Scunthorpe United.

Whether it’s the sound of their name, or moreover their moniker Scunny, whether it’s the childish observation that that have the rudest swear word in the English dictionary embedded in the first five characters of their name, or whether it’s because they’ve never been higher than their current Championship status, Scunthorpe will always be a second rate club.

With a home ground, Glanford Park, which holds just a shade over nine thousand fans at it’s fullest, it’s no surprise to note that the Iron are the smallest club in the Championship. Scunny know that they cannot compete with the others, and no one expects them to. Nevertheless, you can bet your bottom dollar that they’ll be a few dreamers on Wednesday night as the television cameras rock up for the potential cupset.

Last season, under then management of Nigel Adkins, Scunny finished the season in the unspectacular 20th place position. The northerners just managed to avoid relegation after conceding over sixty goals in the campaign, and were it not for Gary Hooper’s amazing 30-goal haul then League One football would have been a certainty.

Sadly for Iron fans, the 2010 summer saw the club stripped of their prized-asset. Hooper moved to Celtic in a £2.4m move that brought in much needed revenue. But he wasn’t the only summer departure as Paul Hayes, creative midfielder Gareth McCann, Scunthorpe born and bred Matt Sparrow and left-back Marcus Williams all left for new pastures. In turn a big void of talent opened up on the books.

Nigel Adkins responded by going back to basics and signing up unproven, but yet exciting, young talent. Acrrington striker Bobby Grant, Rochdale hitman Chris Dagnall, and midfielder Michael Collins were all signed while a couple of loanees (Eddie Nolan and Jim McNulty) boosted the club’s options further.

Weeks into the new season though, and Scunthorpe have had to deal with another loss. Southampton courted Adkins as their new manager, leaving 39-year-old Ian Baraclough to take over the reigns in the thankless caretaker role. Baraclough has since only presided over two matches (two losses in which six goals have been shipped and none have been scored) ahead of the visit of Manchester United, leaving the new man in charge to comment “It will only be my third game as manager and I will be up against Sir Alex who has been involved in more than a thousand games. But I can’t wait.”

Aside from new strikers Grant and Dagnall, after just one season as an Iron 24-year-old Barbados born forward Jonathan Forte remains the old head in the attack. Forte, with two goals on the board already this season, is a pacey and bulky striker who all too often picks the wrong option when faced with a goal scoring opportunity. Elsewhere, wingers Martyn Woolford and Garry Thompson are also some of the brighter sparks available to Scunny.

At the other end of the pitch there is an Irish feel to the defence. At 29-years-young, journeyman keeper Joe Murphy is experiencing his first season ever in which he’s the number one at the club. By contrast skipper Cliff Byrne is playing in his seventh consecutive season as an Iron, and the Shamrock defender talked tough in the build-up to the game by warning the Red Devils not to turn up with their kids.

Bryne: “It will be a difficult night for us, come what may. But if he [Ferguson] sends down too many young lads, then who knows? This is a difficult place to play and once we are bang at it we will cause anyone all sorts of problems. We know that we are not a fashionable club but we also know we are a good team. We revel in being the underdogs but to us it does not matter because we know we are a good team and I cannot imagine there are many teams in the Championship that like coming here to play us. At the end of the day, everyone expects to turn us over and when they don’t it is a bit of an eye-opener for them and we use that to our advantage. Although we would much rather be playing their first team, we know we will have a better opportunity to beat them if they rotate their squad.”

As predicted by Bryne, Sir Alex is due to ring the changes for the cup match. Yet it won’t just be kids who’ll benefit from a shake-up to the United first team.

The big news is that Michael Owen will get his first start of the new season. Whether partnered by Kiko Macheda or Javier Hernandez, the sight of Owen will be welcomed by many football fans after his many years of top class service at both club and international level.

Ryan Giggs is struggling with the same virus that ruled Rio Ferdinand out of the match with Liverpool last weekend, and both will be absent against Scunny. Also likely to be missing are golden oldies Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar, while Nemanja Vidic could also get the night off at the back.

Anderson and Darron Gibson will probably anchor United’s midfield at Glanford Park, while Ji-Sung Park and Gabriel Obertan could also be in line for starts on the wings. There could also be the first sight of new signing Bebe in the first team, probably down the right hand flank. although it is doubtful whether the former homeless footballer will get the nod from the kick-off.

At the back their will also be a series of changes. Any of Ritchie De Laet, the Da Silva brothers, Gary Neville, Chris Smalling, John O’Shea and Jonny Evans could be called upon to make up the back four. Tomasz Kuszczak will line up between the sticks.

Although United will unveil a hugely unfamiliar and inexperienced starting eleven at Scunny, the reigning League Cup champions will no-doubt be the favourites to progress into the fourth round. A bruising and closer-than-expected contest may play out, but with United still able to call upon a group of players with a plethora of international caps and Champions League appearances to their name, in the end we expect the Red Devils to win by at least two goals.

101gg predicts: Scunthorpe 0 – Manchester United 3 (9.51)
