Manchester United appeal for Fabio caution to be corrected after referee Chris Foy books wrong twin brother at Barnsley

Manchester United are confident they can overturn a caution awarded against full-back Fabio during Tuesday's 2-0 Carling Cup fourth-round win over Barnsley - because referee Chris Foy booked the wrong twin.

Foy booked Fabio for a foul on Barnsley substitute Jamal Campbell-Ryce much to the bewilderment of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who spotted the referee's error immediately.

Spot the difference: Fabio (L) was booked against Barnsley but it should have been his identical twin brother Rafael, who had committed the foul, in the book

It was in fact Rafael who had committed the offence and should have received the booking, but the Old Trafford outfit insist the decision should be reversed with the identical twin set to be punished instead.

'We are in discussions with the FA over this matter,' confirmed a United spokesman.

'We have pointed out that the referee made a mistake on the night and we obviously want it to be corrected.

'We will be asking for further advice on how best to rectify the situation.'

We love Rafael for…
1. Assisting Wayne Rooney’s goal.
2. Celebrating the assist as though he’d scored a goal himself.
3. Scoring a goal himself.
4. Dashing over to his brother to share the glory with him.
5. Getting stuck in whenever given the opportunity.

One of his best games in a United shirt. Well done, lad.

Wayne Rooney hailed the performance of Manchester United fullback Rafael da Silva in last night's 5-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic.

Both Rooney and Rafael were on the scoresheet in the comfortable win.

Rooney reserved special praise for United's youngest goalscorer on the night, who also set him up for the opener: "It was a great ball from Rafael and I thought he was brilliant throughout. He's so sharp against opposition wingers and going forward he's always a threat. He's a big plus when he's fit."
