Manchester United supporters angry at the ownership regime of the Glazer family have brought their ‘green and gold’ protest to the driveway of Old Trafford chief executive David Gill.

Security has been stepped up at the directors’ entrance at Old Trafford on match-days and it is understood that a member of the security firm that looks after United’s stadium spent time outside Gill’s house on Wednesday as a consequence of the supporters’ protest.

United fans have been wearing green and gold scarves and shirts at recent games as a symbol of their dissatisfaction with the Glazers’ debt-ridden stewardship. The colours are a throwback to the strip worn by United’s formative club, Newton Heath



And on Tuesday, as United were in Milan preparing for their Champions League game, a group of fans carried a green and gold banner to Gill’s home in Cheshire to protest against what they see as Gill’s compliance with the Glazers.

The slogan reads ‘Debt is the Road to Ruin’ and is a reference to a quote from Gill while he was initially opposing the Glazers’ proposed takeover in 2004.

The United chief executive has subsequently claimed it was taken out of context and he recently gave Radio 5 Live an interview on Sportsweek when he tried to explain the way the Glazers work with United and defended their record.

Gill was also involved in a heated confrontation with a fan at Birmingham University last week. The row flared when Gill was approached after a question-and-answer session about football finances and was asked to explain comments six years ago.



It seems he will continue to come under pressure as the protest gathers pace ahead of the Carling Cup final on Sunday week when the majority of United fans are expected to wear green and gold.

Fergie support for green and gold protest against Glazer family: 'At least it shows United fans care'



Sir Alex Ferguson spoke for the first time about the green and gold protest and insisted Manchester United fans have every right to wage their campaign against the Glazer family, as long as it does not affect his team's performance.

The United boss expressed his concern last month that public demonstrations against the American owners were in danger of causing divisions within Old Trafford at a crucial stage of the season.

But asked yesterday if the problem was escalating as the number of green and gold scarves being worn by disgruntled supporters grows, he claimed that fans are entitled to show how much they care about the club.

'It's not a concern,' he said. 'Every fan has a right to complain about what they think is right.

'We also have to run the club the way we think is the right way to do it, and I think we are doing the right thing with the club.

'Obviously there are fans protesting and we understand where it is coming from, but we carry on with the football side of it.'

The colours represent United's roots as Newton Heath, and fans using the scarves and banners to demonstrate against the Glazers have timed their demonstrations so as not to disrupt the team at crucial points in a game.

Ferguson insists it is vital that remains the case as United go to Everton today looking to go top of the Premier League, at least until leaders Chelsea play Wolves later.

He added: 'I've made my point to the supporters that (it's fine) as long as it doesn't interfere with the team. It shows we have fans who care. The foundation of the club is just the same as it has been for years. We have a good youth set-up, the first team is doing well, and that's what concerns me most.'

Asked whether he would prefer to see fans in red, white and black scarves instead, the United boss replied: 'It doesn't matter, they're still supporting the one team.' As Ferguson prepares for another hot reception at Goodison Park after Tuesday's Champions League clash with AC Milan in the San Siro, he admitted the atmosphere inside Old Trafford can often be lacking in comparison.

He said: 'We do have a lot of visitors from all over the world. I've made that point in the past that some fans come here just to sit there and admire a lovely stadium.

'Goodison Park is a difficult place to go to. The atmosphere is electric and it's a real old football ground, but after going through that first 15 minutes in the San Siro, nothing compares with that.

'I don't care what happens tomorrow, I thought the world was starting to fall on top of us in that first 15 minutes. And we survived it. That stands you in good stead.'

Ferguson also called on Paul Scholes to extend his career by another year after the veteran midfielder once again underlined his importance with the first goal in the 3-2 win over Milan.

The United boss admitted there had been no talks over a new deal yet but he said: 'I think it depends on what Paul thinks. His form in the last few weeks has been incredible. There's no need for him to think about retirement. Another year would not be a problem for him.'

Harris calls for United boycott

Football finance expert Keith Harris has called for Manchester United supporters to boycott matches as he plots a buy-out of the club.

Harris, a United fan who has been involved in several takeovers involving Premier League clubs, has previously claimed to have spoken to several interested parties as he attempts to put together a takeover proposal.

And he now says "getting the money together is the easy bit" and that fans must now "force" the Glazer family to sell the club.

Harris, the former Football League chairman, is executive chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce and began working on a possible takeover after being contacted by members of the Manchester United Supporters Trust.

MUST have recently launched a 'green and gold' campaign, with fans donning the colours in protest against the Glazer regime.

But Harris reckons they must be prepared to take further action.

He told the Daily Mail: "The green and gold protest is fabulous, a symbolic and significant message to the owners. But it won't force the Glazers to sell.

"If enough people - and I'm talking about thousands - stop turning up to matches and do not renew their tickets then that does it.

"The supporters have to hurt the Glazers in the pockets. They have to be prepared to take the pain of not watching their club in order to achieve long-term gain.

"It's a big ask, it's a risk, but that is what must happen. The Glazers are thick-skinned and seem impervious to protest. They will not be impervious to enormous drops in revenue."

Referring to his proposed takeover bid, he added: "I would not talk about this if I didn't have full confidence in our ability to raise the money to do this.

"Getting the money together is the easy bit. But we can't make an offer until the Glazers are placed in a position where they are forced to consider it."

Parading in front of the embodiment of corporate Manchester United, a street trader does some swift business — another sale of the green and gold anti-Glazer protest colours.

His buyer, Chai, was on his way to the Old Trafford megastore, but decided to join the 30,000 who have already bought into the green and gold revolt at the Red Devils.

Seller John Alesbury is expecting more business before Tuesday’s Barclays Premier League match against West Ham. United fans will then take their protest to Wembley for the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Takeover specialist Keith Harris yesterday urged the American owners to sell the club after claiming he has put together a £1 billion buy-out. He said: ‘The fans have to start boycotting matches.’
