United hero David Beckham pins colours to the mast by backing fans' green and gold protest



Former Manchester United Manchester United hero David Beckham gave his own remarkable support to the Old Trafford green and gold campaign on Wednesday night.

The England midfielder made an emotional return to the club where he made his name, only to see a rampant United crush his AC Milan side.

Beckham, however, still made sure that he grabbed the headlines as he plucked a green and gold scarf from the pitch at full-time and draped it proudly round his neck.
The campaign has grown every week since it was launched in January as a symbol of defiance against the Glazer family who own United.

But Beckham’s gesture, watched from the directors’ box by Avi Glazer, represents one of the most significant moments yet.

He said: ‘I am a Manchester United fan and I support the club. I always will. I saw the scarf there and just put it round my neck. It’s the old colours. That’s all I know. It’s nothing to do with me how it’s run. That’s to do with other people. I support the team.’

Glazer had already endured a difficult night as Sir Alex Ferguson’s team put on a majestic performance against a backdrop of anti-Glazer protests.

On the field, United’s performance was notable for two more goals from the remarkable Wayne Rooney. The striker has 30 this season and it is possible he could even beat the 42-goal haul of former United winger Cristiano Ronaldo from two seasons ago.

United manager Ferguson said: ‘There’s a challenge for him now and he will be aiming for it. I was happy for him to get to 30 goals but he keeps improving. Tonight he was sensational. I thought our second-half performance was marvellous. When we play with that tempo we are difficult to play against.’

On a dramatic night in Europe Ronaldo and Real Madrid went out 2-1 to Lyon on aggregate. This removes one significant obstacle for United as they seek to reach the final for the third season running.

Ferguson added: ‘With this team of ours it does not matter who we play. We have that confidence now.’

The night was glorious for United but not so for Beckham. The former England captain was left on the bench at the start and did not appear on the field until the 62nd minute — seemingly with a tear in his eye.

Beckham did threaten to score with one volley and almost set up a goal with a late cross. He received a rapturous ovation from the Old Trafford supporters and swapped shirts with Rio Ferdinand afterwards.

Beckham said: ‘It was very nice to be back and yes it was emotional. I don’t know if I had a tear in my eye or not.

‘It’s a disappointing night in terms of the result. They are a very good team. When you don’t start the game it’s always frustrating.

‘I wanted to play but I’m part of a team and we have to win together and lose together. I keep saying that Wayne Rooney is such an exceptional talent and that is obvious. Without doubt he’s one of the best players in the world at the moment.

‘This is possibly the last time I will play at Old Trafford and I have been given some great memories from the fans. The way they gave me that reception was terrific and I’ll never forget it.’

Ferguson added: ‘We expected that reception for David. I think he deserved that. He was a great player, he had a great spell here. Normally they always applaud our players, the ones who have had great careers here.’

Milan coach Leonardo conceded that United had ‘dominated’ and added his own tribute to Rooney, saying: ‘Rooney can grow up even more because he is still young. He’s a complete player, strong, fast and he works hard.

'He does a lot of incredible movement and he’s playing in a system that is perfect for him. United play at such speed and often on the counter-attack. That system, with Rooney, is incredible.’

MU Tangkal Gerakan Anti-Glazer

Manchester - Manchester United berusaha menangkal gerakan anti Malcolm Glazer yang tengah digalang suporter 'Setan Merah'. Sejumlah langkah sudah dilakukan, termasuk melarang pemain berbicara soal hal ini.

Gerakan anti-Glazer lahir atas ketidakpuasan suporter atas menumpuknya utang MU. Gerakan ini dimotori oleh Must, salah satu kelompok pendukung MU.

Dalam beberapa laga terakhir, suporter mengenakan syal warna kuning-hijau sebagai bentuk perlawanan terhadap Glazer. Selain itu suporter juga membentangkan spanduk yang bertuliskan kalimat yang meminta owner asal Amerika Serikat itu angkat kaki dari MU.

Bahkan pemain AC Milan sekaligus mantan maskot Manchester United, David Beckham juga mengenakan syal kuning pasca laga antara kedua klub di Old Trafford, Kamis (11/3/2010) dinihari WIB.

"David telah menunjukkan warna sejatinya. Gerakan untuk perubahan kini semakin tak bisa dihentikan dan kami paham bahwa David tidak sendirian. Dari Eric Cantona dan Andrew Cole, mantan-mantan pemain kami sudah menunjukkan perasaannya soal ini," demikian pernyataan dari Must.

Bisa jadi klub menganggap gerakan ini bisa membahayakan kinerja The Red Devils. Itu sebabnya klub melakukan sejumlah langkah untuk menangkal semakin meluasnya gerakan anti-Glazer.

Seperti diberitakan Guardian, klub melarang pemain untuk membicarakan hal ini kepada media. "Saya tak terlibat dalam hal ini," tukas pemain senior Gary Neville.

Sementara itu bek Patrice Evra berkomentar diplomatis. "Hijau-kuning merupakan warna dari Newton Heath, cikal bakal Manchester United. Fans mengenakan syal warna itu karena mereka mencintai klub ini. Mereka punya alasan untuk melakukan ini, dan saya pikir ini bukan tindakan yang gila," tukas pemain asal Prancis tersebut.

Selain itu klub juga melakukan sejumlah sensor dan editing terhadap wawancara dengan Ferguson yang disiarkan MUTV. Klub juga mengusir penonton di setiap show MUTV, setelah dia menolak untuk melepas syal warna hijau-kuning.

Seorang steward berusia 19 tahun di-PHK setelah ia melepas spanduk anti-Glazer dan mengembalikan kepada pemiliknya.

Di tengah protes tersebut, MU menyepakati kerjasama sponsor dengan Telekom Malaysia selama lima tahun. Ada pun nilai kerjasamanya tidak diumumkan.

"Semua memiliki hak untuk protes dan tentu saja banyak yang mengenakan warna hijau-kuning," tukas CEO MU David Gill.

"Namun kerjasama ini menunjukkan bahwa klub tetap kuat. Menurut saya masih banyak kerjasama-kerjasama lain yang akan kami jalin."

MANCHESTER, Media-media Inggris memberitakan, Bank Nomura mendukung usaha kelompok suporter Manchester United yang ingin membeli klub itu dari Malcolm Glazer, Kesatria Merah. Bank Nomura akan mengambil posisi sebagai penasihat dalam proses pengambilalihan Manchester United.

Polemik Manchester United bermula dari terungkapnya beban utang senilai triliunan rupiah. Belakangan, pendukung mengetahui, Glazer kesulitan membayar utang ini. Mereka menilai Glazer tak becus mengelola klub dan khawatir Manchester United akan bangkrut.

Pendukung kemudian rajin menggelar spanduk bernada kecaman terhadap Glazer pada laga-laga Manchester United, terutama, di Old Trafford. Karena tak mendapat respons sesuai harapan, sejumlah suporter yang kaya raya bergabung dalam kelompok Kesatria Merah, untuk menggelar aksi yang lebih ekstrem, yaitu membeli Manchester United dari Glazer.

Sejumlah media Inggris sempat memberitakan, Kesatria Merah sudah melontarkan tawaran. Namun, Glazer menolak penawaran itu. Padahal, kemauan Glazer menjual sahamnya adalah kunci keberhasilan pengambilalihan.

Meski begitu, Kesatria Merah terus mencari dukungan demi memaksa Glazer membuka pintu negosiasi. Di luar dugaan, mereka mendapat dukungan dari Bank Nomura.

Untuk membantu Kesatria Merah, Bank Nomura membentuk tim yang diketuai Guy Dawson dan Andrew McNaught. Menurut Soccernet, dua orang ini adalah penasihat Dewan Direksi Manchester United, ketika klub itu dijual kepada Glazer pada 2005 silam.

Tugas tim ini adalah merekatkan kelompok-kelompok suporter Manchester United supaya bergabung dengan Kesatria Merah, mencari investor yang potensial, dan mengoordinasikan dan memformulasikan proposal untuk diserahkan kepada Glazer.

United fans urge legends Cantona and Schmeichel to join green and gold protest after Beckham boost



Manchester United's green and gold anti-Glazer movement has called on the club's former greats to follow the lead of David Beckham and join their campaign to oust the owners of the Barclays Premier League champions.

Former United hero Beckham took the green and gold campaign to new heights on Wednesday as the AC Milan player draped himself in one of the movement's scarves as he left the Old Trafford field after his team's 4-0 Champions League defeat against his old club.

And the Manchester United Supporters Trust have now written an open letter to the likes of Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel aimed at encouraging other Old Trafford icons to visibly support their war against the club's owners.

Part of a letter to MUST's 131,000 members reads: "I'm sure you were watching the incredible moment when Beckham bathed in green and gold. It's moments like this that justify all the collective effort we've been putting into this campaign. We are showing our strength. We are making a real difference.

'We welcomed a legend back to Old Trafford - now we need to capitalise on this moment and bring other United heroes into our fold.

'We've just written a letter to Beckham, Cantona and all of the former United players which calls on them to join our campaign to reclaim United.

'This is our chance to reach out to the United players who built our club - who led from the front and defined United's success over the past decades. But our club is in trouble - we need them to lead United again right here, right now.

'Beckham united with the fans and led by example. Beckham has shown his true colours, now it's up to us to show ours.

'The time to reclaim United is now.'

Membership of MUST has risen steadily since the green and gold campaign began in January but it surged again after Beckham's gesture, with an extra 3,000 fans joining the fold.

With a group of businessmen naming themselves 'The Red Knights' and trying to raise money to buy United from the Glazers, it emerged yesterday that they have appointed Japan's largest investment bank Nomura to help them.

It is also not beyond the realms of possibility that Beckham may be asked to officially join the group, too.

MUST spokesman Sean Bones said last night: 'What Beckham did was a fantastic gesture from the heart of a United legend who cares passionately about Manchester United and its supporters.

'David is exactly the right type of person United supporters would love to see as a future Red Knight.'

Two of the Glazer family were present at Old Trafford on Wednesday to witness a superb performance from Sir Alex Ferguson's team but also a protest against them that reached a crescendo during the last ten minutes.

Last night United chief executive David Gill said: 'There are protests.

'Everyone has the right to protest and there was certainly a lot of green and gold there last night, you cannot deny that.'

Itu bukti nyata klo mereka bukan fans MU, tapi fans duit. mereka nggak peduli MU tapi peduli sama keuntungan finansial MU. mereka tau MU sebagai brand olahraga terbesar di dunia bakalan mendatangkan keuntungan finansial meski banyak utang.
