Default Re: Jose Mourinho : MUFC Manager!

Jose Mourinho arrives at Manchester United three days after his appointment... so how does his first day in the job compare with David Moyes and Louis van Gaal?

* Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho spent first day in job on Monday
* New manager met vice-chairman Ed Woodward at Aon Training Complex
* First day in new job only three days after his appointment was announced
* David Moyes arrived 52 days after appointment, Louis van Gaal 58 days

Three days after being announced as the new Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho got to work on Monday.

The former Chelsea boss was greeted by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and club legend and ambassador Sir Bobby Charlton as he was given a tour of the training ground.

The pomp, and speed, of the Portuguese's arrival contrasts sharply with that of predecessors David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, who took 52 and 58 days to get down to business following their appointments.

Jose Mourinho shakes hands with Manchester United executive vice-chairman on Monday morning

The Special One was on a charm-offensive as he settled into his new job on Bank Holiday Monday.

He greeted Charlton on the edge of United's Aon Training Complex, where the two embraced before Mourinho joked about the 78-year-old's role in England's semi-final win over Portugal in the 1966 World Cup - he scored twice in a 2-1 win at Wembley.

The 53-year-old was shown around by Woodward and met other members of staff, including managing director Richard Arnold and head of elite performance John Murtough.

He made a point of shaking everybody's hand and asked those who work at Carrington to repeat their names as he looks to add a personal touch before he hits the ground running.

The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss' eagerness to get started may in part be down to his great rival Pep Guardiola, who does not begin work across the city until July 1.

Only two years ago it was Louis van Gaal making his introductions around the club, and while he was appointed on May 19, 2014, his first day did not come until July 16.

United executive vice chairman Woodward and Sir Bobby Charlton were on hand to give Mourinho a tour

New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was shown around the club's Carrington training base

The Dutchman would only take charge following the conclusion of the World Cup in Brazil, where he led Holland to a semi-final finish. Van Gaal's campaign ended with a 3-0 win over the hosts in the third place play-off in Brasilia, four days before his first day in Manchester.

He touched down on a private jet in the city at 8.40 in the morning, before he whisked off to Carrington in a black Chevrolet from a private hangar.

His coaches Albert Stuivenberg and Marcel Bout took training and continued following the instructions that van Gaal had issued while he was away in South America.

After posing for photographs with new assistant Ryan Giggs and Woodward he conducted a second training session later in the day.

It was to be his only contact with the players before they flew to America on a three-week pre-season tour.

Twelve months earlier it had been David Moyes, who was stepping into Sir Alex Ferguson's shoes.

The Scot had signed a six-year deal on May 9, 2013 but was unable to officially take up his position until July 1 - the same day that Woodward replaced David Gill - due to his contract at Everton.

It was all very low-key for the man charged with continuing United's glory years, with Woodward not even present to greet him.

Two hours after Moyes had driven into his new club's training complex in a sponsored Chevrolet, it was confirmed that Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods would be following him from Goodison Park.

After the challenges that faced Moyes and van Gaal early on in their reigns, Mourinho will be hoping his speedy start brings instant dividends at Old Trafford.

Mourinho meets Manchester United great Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby Charlton wished Jose Mourinho congratulations on his appointment as Manchester United manager to complete a dramatic U-turn.

Three-and-a-half years ago, Charlton said 'Mourinho is a really good coach but that's as far as I would go really' and added the Portuguese 'pontificates too much for my liking'.

Charlton, who is understood to have opposed Mourinho's appointment, greeted the former Chelsea coach at United's Carrington training complex on Monday morning and the pair enjoyed a cordial exchange.

"I'm very happy to see you," Charlton told Mourinho in footage captured by MUTV. Mourinho then joked about Charlton's two goals for England against Portugal in the 1966 World Cup semi-final.

"You killed my country's dream in 1966, but even so, all the best," he said, before putting his arm around Charlton. When the United great offered Mourinho his congratulations, the Reds manager suggested he should only congratulate him after United start winning matches.

Mourinho was joined by trusted assistant Rui Faria at Carrington on Monday, as he was given a guided tour of United's training base by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Woodward introduced Mourinho to various staff members, including newly appointed head of football development John Murtough.

Mourinho's wife, Matilde, earlier posted a photo of her husband stood outside the Aon Training Complex's main building carrying a United bag in what was an early statement of intent.

United's players are due to return for pre-season training on July 4, while Mourinho hinted in his MUTV interview on Friday his press conference unveiling could be three days later on July 7.

"I can say I am happy, I am proud, I am honoured, but the reality is that what I love is to work and I cannot wait for 7th July to go onto the pitch," he told MUTV .

Rooney excited by Mourinho arrival

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is excited by the appointment of Jose Mourinho and is looking forward to working with the new manager at the start of 2016/17.

Mourinho was announced as United’s new manager on Friday morning and visited the Aon Training Complex on Monday, where he met club legend Sir Bobby Charlton and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The 53-year-old arrives at Old Trafford with an enormous pedigree, having won 22 major team honours in four different countries, and Rooney is eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for the Reds.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of England’s Euro 2016 warm-up match against Portugal on Thursday night, Rooney said: "He's one of the best managers in the world. It's an exciting time for Manchester United.

"He knows the Premier League very well and I'm looking forward to it [working with Mourinho]."

Quote:
For now, Rooney’s focus is on international matters as he looks to captain England to Euro 2016 glory in France. The forward is one of three Reds in Roy Hodgson’s squad, alongside Chris Smalling and Marcus Rashford, with the team kicking off their campaign against Russia on 11 June in Marseille.

"It's a proud moment to captain the team heading into a tournament,” said Rooney. "It's a young squad but it has got a lot of quality. I'm injury-free, whereas in a lot of tournaments I've had little niggles. I'm happy with my fitness and form."

Rooney scored England's second goal in Friday's friendly win over Australia, after Rashford had netted barely two minutes into his senior international debut to continue his remarkable rise, with confirmation of the 19-year-old's place in England's tournament squad coming only 96 days after his senior United debut.

"The way Marcus took to coming into the Manchester United team and the way he’s performed from when he’s come in until the end of the season has been incredible," Rooney continued. "He’s certainly showed what he can do in his first game for England, getting his first goal in the first couple of minutes.

"I think what’s pleasing about him is his attitude. It’s first class and that’s shown around the hotel and on the training pitch and he deserves it. He could be a real positive for us.”

Hodgson added: "Rashford’s had that fantastic end to the season and he’s a very interesting player. He has special qualities and I think that’s been recognised by everybody – and it will be very interesting to see in a squad of 23 whether or not he can bring those qualities to bear at an even higher level."

Jose Mourinho pulls out of Soccer Aid match at Old Trafford as he wants to focus on commitments to Manchester United

* Jose Mourinho was set to manage England team at Soccer Aid on Sunday
* New Manchester United boss has pulled out of Old Trafford charity fixture
* Mourinho wants to focus firmly on commitments to Red Devils
* The 53-year-old feels his presence in dugout would overshadow event
* Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce will take charge of team instead

Jose Mourinho has pulled out of his first appearance at Old Trafford since becoming Manchester United manager after deciding not to take charge of an England team at Soccer Aid this weekend.

It's understood that the 53-year-old Portuguese coach wants to focus on his commitments to United after agreeing a three-year deal last week to succeed Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho will still take training at Fulham on Thursday and Friday as an England side that includes Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler and Phil Neville prepare to play Claudio Ranieri's Rest of the World team on Sunday.

However, he is now expected to hand over the reins to Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce who was due to be his assistant for the day.

United have not put their new manager under any pressure to stand aside, mindful that the match is in aid of UNICEF.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss feels that his presence at Old Trafford would overshadow the event

But Mourinho is conscious that the charity event could be overshadowed by the inevitable focus on his presence in the home dugout at Old Trafford for the first time.

Two-time Champions League winner Mourinho, who has returned to management for the first time since his dismissal by Chelsea last December, has already set out his stall with the Red Devils.

He is keen to right the wrongs of last season which saw United finish a disappointing fifth in the Premier League and miss out on Champions League football next term.

He is understood to be armed with a sizeable transfer warchest for the summer window, the likes of Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Everton defender John Stones among the names being touted to feature on his wish-list.

One setback at United which Mourinho will have to deal with, though, is the seemingly imminent exit of Ryan Giggs.

Giggs was Van Gaal’s assistant manager last season, but with Mourinho keen to bring in his trusted friend Rui Faria in that role, the Welshman was set to be given a new position bridging between United’s Under 21s and first-team.

Giggs is understood to be dissatisfied with the offer and is expected to pursue his first solo management position elsewhere.

'Jose Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world': Wayne Rooney gives thumbs-up to his new Manchester United boss

* Wayne Rooney has spoken publicly about Jose Mourinho's appointment as Manchester United manager for the first time
* The striker says new Old Trafford boss is 'one of the best in the world'
* England captain praises Marcus Rashford after inclusion in Euros squad

Wayne Rooney has spoken about the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Manchester United manager for the first time, with the striker claiming his new boss is 'one of the best in the world'.

Mourinho was formally unveiled as Louis van Gaal's successor at Old Trafford on Friday, ending a drawn-out process which lasted several months, and the Portuguese will begin building towards a Premier League title tilt when his players return from Euro 2016 and any subsequent summer breaks next month.

Rooney was quizzed on the subject of the incoming United boss at a press conference ahead of England's clash with Portugal and he was quick to say how eagerly he is anticipating life under the former Chelsea chief.

Rooney said he is excited to work under the Portuguese, saying he is 'one of the best managers in the world'

'It's exciting. He's one of the best managers in the world and knows the Premier League very well,' said Rooney.

'I'm looking forward to it.'

The Three Lions skipper also heaped praise on Marcus Rashford following his inclusion in Roy Hodgson's final 23-man squad for the European Championship in France.

'He's certainly showed what he can do in his first game for England, getting his first goal in the first couple of minutes,' said Rooney.

'I think what's pleasing about him is his attitude. It's first class and that's shown around the hotel and on the training pitch and he deserves it.'

DE GEA: JOSE IS A WINNER

David De Gea believes combining Manchester United's winning mentality with that of new manager Jose Mourinho can enable the Reds to "build a great team."

Mourinho was confirmed as the club's new boss at the end of last month and De Gea, United's Player of the Year for the last three seasons, has spoken of his delight at the appointment.

The Reds signed off the 2015/16 campaign on a high with a first FA Cup triumph for 12 years which De Gea insists the squad must use as a springboard for further success, and the Spanish shot-stopper believes that, under Mourinho, anything is possible.

"To speak of Jose Mourinho is to talk about a winning coach and that is United's philosophy and mine," De Gea is quoted as saying in Spanish newspaper Marca. "With that idea in mind, I'm certain we can build a great team. I welcome him.

"When you speak of United, nothing is enough if you don't win every title," he continued. "Not qualifying for the Champions League was a big blow but we have won the FA Cup after 12 years, and after three years without lifting a trophy.

"We must value this, because it's a very important trophy for the fans. This FA Cup should be the launch pad for the club to win important titles."

De Gea penned a new four-year deal with the Reds last September and he's excited by what potentially lies ahead.

"I have three further years left on my contract with United and I'm enthusiastic to win titles here," he declared.
