Default Re: Harry Maguire

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES, SAYS MAGUIRE

Harry Maguire has hailed a change in Manchester United’s mindset that he believes can help rebuild fortress Old Trafford.

The Reds put ourselves in the thick of the 2021 Premier League title battle with a late winner against Wolves last night, with the 1-0 victory pushing us up into second place in the division.

But captain Maguire was keen to point out that the three points snatched in the 93rd minute might not have happened last season.

“I think last year in games like this we would push and then we’d concede a sloppy goal at the other end and we would have to go and chase the game,” Harry told us after the final whistle.

“We’d end up losing or drawing the game and giving ourselves too much to do.

“Every win is a big win. We’ve got great away form this year, so it's important we come here and start winning games at Old Trafford and making it hard for teams to come here and play.”

Our skipper admitted it was a game United had to roll their sleeves up to finally come out on top.

“It wasn’t our best performance,” he said. “The intensity wasn’t really there in our football, in our attacking play but these games you have got to dig in, keep the game at 0-0 and make sure you don’t concede.

“The second half we controlled really, really well, I didn’t feel like they were going to score in the game. The first half they had a couple of counter attacks and we adjusted at half-time and we nailed it in the second half.

“It is important to keep the game at 0-0 and in our team you always have that talent at the top end of the pitch that something might change and Marcus twisted and turned and got a slice of luck.

“But if anyone was going to win the game it was always going to be us.”

Maguire and defensive partner Eric Bailly were at the heart of a solid United showing in M16, but the former Leicester man claimed it was a team effort.

“We had great protection from Nemanja [Matic] and also Paul [Pogba], who I thought was excellent in the defensive work,” Maguire said.

“Luke [Shaw] has come on and does really well with some excellent tackles. It was an all-round defensive performance. I think defensively we were pretty solid and sound.

“We lacked a little bit of tempo playing the ball through the lines and finding Bruno (Fernandes) and we couldn’t quite grasp that but it is important to stay in the game, keep it at 0-0 and just wait for your chance, wait for your moment.

“In the second half we had a lot of pressure and controlled the game a lot better in the second half. We have this talent at the top of the pitch and it is nice to have that little bit of luck to go our way. The more you get into the box, the more chance you have of scoring goals. That luck turns: we had shots, blocks and handball shouts and it was nice to get a winner in the end.”

United are now just two points behind league leaders Liverpool with both sides having played 15 games. But Maguire is ready for a marathon.

“I don’t know what position we were in last new year but we are in a lot stronger position than we were last year,” he said.

“We are not getting carried away. It’s a long season. We are not half way through. Games come thick and fast. We will recover and try and get three points against Aston Villa on Friday night.”

Harry Maguire urges his Man United team-mates to 'stand up and be counted' as they aim to bounce back against Arsenal after blasting their display as 'not good enough' in shock loss to rock-bottom Sheffield United

* Harry Maguire admits Man United were 'devastated' by Sheffield United defeat
* United skipper is relishing chance to bounce back against Arsenal on Saturday
* He criticised their display in Blades loss and said 'we've got to pick ourselves up'

Harry Maguire says Manchester United's players have to stand up and be counted by immediately bouncing back from their unacceptable defeat to rock-bottom Sheffield United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were stunned by Chris Wilder's Blades at Old Trafford on Wednesday night when substitute Oliver Burke's heavily-deflected strike secured a shock 2-1 win for the visitors.

Maguire had cancelled out Kean Bryan's opener, but Manchester United failed to build on his second-half header as his former club celebrated just their second Premier League win of a wretched season.

Harry Maguire admitted Man United fell short of the club's standards on Wednesday night

'We have great belief,' the United skipper said. 'At half-time we knew we didn't perform well in the first half but felt like we still had belief that if we scored the next goal we would go on to win the game.

'We scored the next goal, it was an important goal and we never found anything extra to push, found that little spark, that inspiration. Something was missing.

'We'll work on it, we've got to improve. We know that it's not good enough for this club.

'We've got to win games, especially at Old Trafford against teams that are where they are in the league. For sure we've got to improve.'

Maguire was fuming about the decision to allow Bryan's opener given Billy Sharp shoved David De Gea as the corner came in, just as he was angered to be called for a foul that saw an Anthony Martial leveller ruled out.

But those decisions could not mask the poor display that saw them lose in the Premier League for the first time since November 1 against Arsenal, United's opponents when they return to action on Saturday.

United suffered a 'devastating' defeat at home against rock-bottom side Sheffield United. Maguire, who scored the equaliser, insisted United must pick themselves up for Arsenal clash

'It's the best thing possible,' Maguire told MUTV ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

'When you do get a defeat, there's nothing worse than waiting time to get back out on the pitch to play and put things right.

'The boys are devastated in there, if I'm being honest. It's a really quiet dressing room. The boys are so disappointed.

'We didn't expect it. We came into the game confident, but we've got to pick ourselves up. Tomorrow is a new day.

'We are still disappointed, it hurts, but Saturday is a big game and we've got to bounce back.

'It's all good and easy when you're winning football matches and you're playing well, but now it's time to stand up, be counted.

'When you get kicked down, it's how quick you bounce back and Saturday's a big one and we've got to go and get three points.'

While Solskjaer prepares his side for a trip to the Emirates Stadium, the Blades will be back in Manchester to take on Pep Guardiola's table-topping City side on Saturday.

It is another big ask for embattled Sheffield United, but Wilder's men will take great confidence from Wednesday's win.

'The players are jumping about in there which they deserve to, because it's been a tough old season,' the boss said.

'We'll bring everyone back down to earth tomorrow to go again at the other side of town. I'm delighted for the players because they've gone through a hell of a lot this season.

'We talked about big moments which we took.

'The second goal was a great reaction to the equaliser, to come back and stick our noses in front again, and it's a great moment for us.'

Harry Maguire believes Manchester United showed 'great spirit and mentality' to beat West Ham in the FA Cup just days after Everton's injury-time equaliser at Old Trafford

* Harry Maguire says they have bounced back from Everton's last-gasp equaliser
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals
* Maguire says the result pays testament to the club's great spirit and mentality
* Although the United captain claims his side must be more clinical in the future

Harry Maguire believes Manchester United have bounced back from Everton's last-minute equaliser at Old Trafford to produce a 'good performance' against West Ham in the FA Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals after Scott McTominay's extra-time winner sealed a hard-fought victory over Hammers on Tuesday night.

Maguire believes the result pays testament to the club's 'great spirit and mentality', but insists his side must be more 'clinical' in the future.

Maguire believe United produced a 'good performance' in a historic game that saw Issa Diop become English football's first concussion substitute.

Maguire told BBC Sport: 'It shows a great spirit and mentality to come back here and perform, get our heads back up.

'We know it is a long season, there are games every three days. It is the best thing when you are disappointed to have a game in a few days' time.

'I thought the performance was good. We could have been a bit more clinical.

'They had a spell but we dealt with it a lot better than at the weekend and we felt we got the win we deserved in the end.

'Last Saturday was tough - especially in the second half. We were so disappointed with conceding with the last kick.

'We showed great spirit and a good mentality to come back and perform. We know it's a long season and tonight was perfect. It's important to get through.

The result will see United reach the last eight for a seventh consecutive year. However, Solskjaer will be eager to see the club lift the trophy for the first time since 2016.

As for now, Manchester United will be back in action at West Brom in the Premier League on Sunday, February 14.

Harry Maguire admits it is 'vital' Manchester United win their first trophy since 2017 as he issues rallying cry to team-mates to end run of four consecutive semi-final defeats

* Manchester United are without a trophy since the Europa League in 2017
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen four successive cup semi-final defeats
* United reached FA Cup quarter-finals with victory over West Ham on Tuesday

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire knows it is high time the club starts winning trophies again.

The Old Trafford giants are synonymous with success but have not won silverware since lifting the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in May 2017.

Successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - a man who knows a thing or two about collecting winners' medals at United - has fallen just short so far, losing in four successive cup semi-final appearances.

Harry Maguire has spoken of Manchester United's need to end their four-year trophy drought. United last lifted silverware under Jose Mourinho when they won the Europa League in 2017

Carabao Cup exits bookended defeats in the FA Cup and Europa League semi-finals - competitions that this season continue to provide an avenue to glory that skipper Maguire is determined to grasp.

'Last season, it was disappointing to lose in the semi-finals like we did, but we've got to win trophies,' the United defender said.

'We've got to demand that of each other. We do.

'We demand that we win trophies and it's vital the team starts winning trophies, for the club and the fans as well.'

United sealed their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday evening, when Scott McTominay's snapshot sealed a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time win against West Ham.

'We got there in the end and I feel we deserved it,' Maguire said.

'We felt comfortable on the pitch, I felt in the first half we played with intensity and dominated the game, played the game in their half and had chances where we should be one, two, three (up). We just needed four for us (to score).'

United have beaten Watford, Liverpool and West Ham at an empty Old Trafford to reach next month's quarter-finals, with the draw coming up on Thursday night.

'We love playing at this ground, and we've got to make it tough for people to come here and get results,' Maguire told MUTV.

Maguire and Co have lost four successive semi-finals, including against Man City last month

'We need to get better and we seem to have improved a little of late. But no, obviously, we want a home game.

'We fancy our chances against anyone, we just need to look after ourselves, perform well and ensure that we start winning trophies at this club.'

United also remain second in the Premier League, albeit leaders Manchester City have built a five-point lead and have a game in hand.

Solskjaer's men return to league action at West Brom on Sunday, while West Ham will be looking to return to winning ways against Sheffield United on Monday.

Ben Johnson, who came on at half-time, said the Old Trafford exit was 'definitely a tough one to take' but is confident they can build on what has been a fine season for the east London club, who sit sixth in the standings.

'We're doing really well this season,' the full-back told club media. 'The dressing room we've got helps so much with the characters we have got in there.

'The players we have got are top, top players and I don't think you realise the calibre of players we have - Dec (Rice) is a top international player, we brought in Tomas (Soucek), Vlad (Coufal), Daws (Craig Dawson) and Said (Benrahma).

'We have Michail (Antonio) playing up front, and Cressy (Aaron Cresswell) and Angelo (Ogbonna) are having top seasons, so we've got a lot of top players in our team.

'We go onto the next one on Monday. We bounced back from the Liverpool game against Villa, so we're just looking for that reaction again.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire makes a thinly veiled dig at Jurgen Klopp after the Man United captain was denied a penalty in West Brom draw, claiming they've had NOTHING from VAR since 'people from other clubs started talking about us'

* Manchester United were held 1-1 by West Brom in a frustrating draw on Sunday
* Skipper Harry Maguire thought he'd earned his side a penalty in the second-half
* The defender went down under pressure from Semi Ajayi from a free-kick
* Maguire was offside, which wasn't checked, but the spot-kick was still reversed
* The United captain then aimed a jibe at Jurgen Klopp over his penalty rant

Harry Maguire fumed that Manchester United are being treated more harshly by referees since Jurgen Klopp's penalty rant in January, after claiming he was denied a 'certain' spot-kick against West Brom.

United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Baggies on Sunday afternoon, dropping vital points in the title race.

The Old Trafford outfit were awarded a second-half penalty when Maguire went down under Semi Ajayi's challenge, only for it to be wiped away following VAR's review.

Harry Maguire was left furious after the penalty he won against West Brom was reversed

The Manchester United skipper was challenged by Semi Ajayi from a free-kick opportunity. The centre back went crashing to the floor as Bruno Fernandes' cross was coming over to him

'Ever since people from other teams have spoken about us we've had nothing, absolutely nothing,' Maguire told MUTV.

The Englishman was referencing a heated interview given by Klopp after Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Southampton back in January, when the Reds boss was adamant Sadio Mane should have been awarded a penalty.

'I hear now that Man United had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years. I've no idea if that's my fault, or how that can happen,' the German complained.

Maguire hinted Jurgen Klopp's complaints over United's penalty luck have changed things. Craig Pawson went over to the monitor and judged that the contact had not been enough. Maguire was slammed by Graeme Souness, who insisted the penalty should not have stood

Whether Klopp's words have had influence or not, there was no spot-kick to save them from a costly draw at the Hawthorns.

After Bruno Fernandes' spectacular first-half equaliser, United were chasing a winner in the second-half. In the 61st minute, the Portuguese maestro whipped-in a dangerous free-kick, aiming for Maguire at the back-post.

The centre back hit the deck under pressure from Ajayi, and referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot. VAR then called the referee over to the monitor.

Replays showed Maguire was offside – and should have reversed the decision on that basis – but failed to even check if the Englishman was beyond the last defender. Pawson still cancelled the penalty, leaving Maguire baffled.

'I was so certain it was a penalty,' the United captain told Sky Sports.

'I don't understand why he's been sent to the monitor to check it. I'm goal-side of the defender and I feel a touch on my shoulder, he's pulling me back and there's a clip on my heels.

'It's minimal but it's a penalty. When he points to the spot you think there's no chance he overturns it. There are decisions going against us, but we need to do more to win the game.

'We can't be reliant on VAR decisions. We huffed and puffed and have to improve.'

Graeme Souness saw the incident differently, laying into Maguire while on punditry duty.

'It's clearly offside, and he goes to ground like he's been hit by a baseball bat – diving,' the Scotsman said.

'He said he thinks it's a penalty, that's not enough to bring him down. That's throwing himself to the ground.'

'I demand a lot': Harry Maguire assures he is a vocal leader as Manchester United captain but insists his side must now start winning trophies, as a mouthwatering Europa League clash against AC Milan awaits

* Harry Maguire played a crucial role as Manchester United beat City on Sunday
* They now face a pivotal four-game spell, starting with AC Milan on Thursday
* United have lost four semi-finals in as many games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* And the United captain has revealed he is now demanding a lot from his players

Harry Maguire has outlined his determination to become a successful Manchester United captain and revealed he demands a lot from his players.

The Englishman, who was signed in a world-record £80million transfer from Leicester in 2019, has now been captain for over a year and has played a major role as United have emerged as Premier League contenders once more.

United are yet to win any silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, and have lost four consecutive semi-finals. And while Maguire acknowledges his privilege to be captain, he insists his side must now take the next step.

'It's a huge privilege; I feel so lucky to be able to lead this club and be captain of this club,' Maguire told UEFA.com prior to Thursday's Europa League last-16 first leg clash with AC Milan. 'It's a huge honour.

'I'm doing everything I can to be a successful captain, and obviously the main thing is to start lifting trophies and start winning football matches on a continuous, consistent basis.

'I demand a lot. I'm sure you could speak to a lot of players [and they'd tell you that] I'm loud around the place, I'm loud around the dressing room.'

After three constructive 0-0 draws, United bounced back in style with a sublime 2-0 away win at Manchester City on Sunday.

The win extended United's phenomenal record to 22 Premier League away matches unbeaten, while also ending City's run of 21 consecutive victories in all competitions.

While their chances remain slim, victory also ensured United still possess a glimmer of hope in the title race - they are now 11 points behind City with 10 games remaining.

Nevertheless, even if United are to fall short in the race, Maguire insists Solskjaer has done a remarkable job at the club.

Harry Maguire was instrumental as Manchester United beat rivals City 2-0 on Sunday

'[Solskjaer and I] have a great relationship,' he said. 'I feel he's done brilliantly.

'He's cool, calm, but he's also got the side of him where he can turn when he needs to and when the players need a little telling-off. We're close.

'We speak a lot before training, before games. I give my ideas to him and how I feel the group is and the mentality of the group and what we can improve on and where we can go as a club, and he's exactly the same.'

Maguire and United now face a crucial period ahead in what will determine whether their season has been a success.

In their next four games, they face a double-header with European giants AC Milan, a mouthwatering Premier League clash against top-four challenging West Ham, and a blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final clash with Leicester.
