'He is a very good goalkeeper - De Gea is going to have a battle on to stay as No 1 for Manchester United': Andy Cole full of praise for Dean Henderson after fine save from Leandro Trossard preserved his second clean sheet in two matches

Andy Cole and Darren Fletcher have heaped praise on Dean Henderson after his stellar performance in Manchester United's triumph over Brighton.

Henderson executed an outstanding one-handed save to deny Leandro Trossard and preserve his second clean sheet for United as they won 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Such a performance would have left David De Gea sitting uncomfortably as his competitor closes in on his position as first-choice goalkeeper.

Andy Cole and Darren Fletcher have heaped praise on Manchester United's Dean Henderson

Speaking of Henderson's performance, Cole told Sky Sports: 'Very good again. We have spoken about it previously, playing in goal for Manchester United is not easy, especially when United are playing well because you’re not really called upon but when he has been called upon this evening, he has made two real good saves.

'He has definitely impressed me when he has been given the opportunity in goal.'

Darren Fletcher agreed, saying: 'This is a fantastic save, and this is at 1-0. It keeps them right in the game, Trossard thinks he has scored there.

'He stays up big, gets a strong hand to it, puts it past the post. He did the exact same thing against Luton.

'United were struggling a little bit and Luton had a header at the back post and he made a fantastic save.

Henderson executed an outstanding one-handed save to deny Brighton's Leandro Trossard. Henderson is putting pressure on David De Gea and his position as first-choice goalkeeper
'Henderson has proven to everyone that he is a very good goalkeeper, and De Gea is going to have a battle on to stay as No 1 for Manchester United.'

'We spoke then as well, you expect to make saves at Sheffield United with all due respect but at Manchester United, he’s made two great saves tonight, and he has been there and he has been counted upon.

'That could have easily been 1-1, confidence goes down, Brighton come back into the game. But off the back of that, the rest of the team say we’ve got away with one there and then they go on and win 3-0 and it’s a comfortable victory.'

After coming through the United academy, Henderson made his United debut in the 3-0 win over Luton in the Carabao Cup last week.

Having produced another impressive performance against Premier League opposition, Henderson is pushing to overtake David De Gea as the first-choice keeper.

When asked if he thought Henderson could replace De Gea between the sticks, Cole said: 'I think De Gea is in a little bit of credit from his previous seasons at Manchester United.

'I think it is more what he doesn’t do. If he has a bit of a season like he did last season, I think Henderson will definitely get his opportunity.

GRANT: I'VE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH HENDERSON

Lee Grant has spoken highly about Dean Henderson's performances in the Manchester United shirt so far.
Dean made his debut for the Reds against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup in September and came up with a great reaction save to deny the hosts' defender Tom Lockyer a goal in our 3-0 win at Kenilworth Road.

The England Under-21 international was also selected between the sticks by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the following round of the tournament when we saw off Brighton & Hove Albion with another three-goal win - as well as a clean sheet.

Dean's goalkeeper colleague Lee Grant is excited to see what Henderson will achieve in his United career following a promising start, acknowledging his concentration.

“It’s hugely important,” our no. 13 said. “We like to dominate possession and we like to dominate the opposition so we’re not always at the heart of the action. As Dean showed really well on a couple of occasions you have to be ready when called upon.”

The United Academy product has been selected in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad but remained on the bench as the Three Lions overcome Wales 3-0 at Wembley on Thursday.

Should he make his England debut against Belgium or Denmark in the upcoming Nations League games, he would become the sixth United goalkeeper to represent England while on the books with the Reds, after Gary Bailey, Ben Foster, Jack Mew, Alex Stepney and Ray Wood.

Grant is pleased with United's goalkeeper group, complimenting the spirit in the camp and admits all our stoppers have made their mark, not just Henderson.

“I have [been impressed], but not just from him,“ the 37-year-old said.

”Nathan Bishop has been outstanding in training and all the lads will tell you the same. David [De Gea] has come back with a really high level so I’m really pleased for David and how he has started the season as well. The goalkeeping department is in really good shape.”

Dean Henderson 'could be loaned out in January in the hope of ousting Jordan Pickford as England No 1' as Manchester United block Sergio Romero from leaving as a back-up

* Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson could be loaned out in January
* David de Gea has nailed down the No.1 spot under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Henderson is hoping for a place in the England team at the Euros next summer
* But he will need regular football to be considered by manager Gareth Southgate
* United blocked Sergio Romero from leaving as they weigh up Henderson's future

Manchester United could allow goalkeeper Dean Henderson to leave on loan in January as he bids for the England No.1 jersey, reports claim.

David de Gea has kept his place as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first choice man between the sticks, leaving Henderson to contend with a role on the bench despite excelling during a temporary switch at Sheffield United last season.

Henderson will be keen on staking a claim to be Gareth Southgate's pick at next summer's Euros over Jordan Pickford, but he will need regular football - which could force United to sanction a loan deal, according to ESPN.

Dean Henderson could be allowed to leave Man United on loan in January, reports claim. Sergio Romero also wants to leave but United will wait until Henderson's future is clearer

Fellow keeper Sergio Romero is also keen on leaving in January after being left out of Solskjaer's squads, but the club have blocked a move and will put any departure on ice until they have finalised a plan for Henderson, the report adds.

The veteran Argentine came close to a move to David Beckham's MLS franchise Inter Miami, but the deal fell through and was also left frustrated when a transfer to Everton failed to materialise.

The £100,000 a week keeper was upset with how he was treated by the club and is said to be training alone, but he could be forced to stay until the summer should Henderson depart - with Solskjaer keen to have more options, ESPN says.

Many fans and pundits had tipped Henderson to become No.1 goalkeeper for both Manchester United and England after catching the eye on loan at Bramall Lane last season. Chris Wilder's side would be the leading favourites to secure him once again after sinking to the foot of the Premier League table.

With no goalkeeper cementing their position as England's No.1, Henderson will be confident of claiming the place should he gain regular minutes - especially after criticism of Pickford for Everton this season.

The Toffees star has been Southgate's preferred choice and impressed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals, but he has been guilty of some glaring mistakes and will face pressure for his position from both Henderson and Burnley's Nick Pope.

Henderson is hoping to challenge Jordan Pickford for the England No.1 spot at the Euros. But Henderson, who excelled on loan at Sheffield United last season, needs more minutes

Carlo Ancelotti opted to drop Pickford for their 2-1 loss at Newcastle, calling upon Robin Olsen instead, before recalling him for the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United.

But Southgate insisted he would stay as his first choice for the time being in the absence of a 'serious challenge' from his rivals.

'His performances have been excellent for us and so that has not been a difficult decision for me,' he said.

'We have some competition for places but I would have to say that there is nobody who I think is challenging seriously at the moment to push him out of that position.'

Dean Henderson 'keen on loan move away from Manchester United' in January to boost Euro 2020 chances with England after failing to dislodge David de Gea as Old Trafford No 1

* Dean Henderson has struggled for game time so far this season at Man United
* The keeper has played just three times, with all coming in cup competitions
* He has been unable to take the gloves from David De Gea after signing new deal
* Henderson is now reportedly keen on another loan move from Old Trafford
* The 23-year-old is keen to ensure he is picked in England squad for Euro 2020

Dean Henderson would like a loan move away from Manchester United in January to boost his chances of claiming the England No 1 jersey at Euro 2020, reports claim.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper has struggled for game time so far this season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keeping faith with David De Gea after Henderson decided to stay at Old Trafford.

He made his senior England debut in the 3-0 friendly win over the Republic of Ireland at Wembley during the recent internationals.

Dean Henderson 'is keen on another loan move' away from Manchester United in January. The 23-year-old keeper made his England debut recently and wants to be in Euro 2020 squad

But opportunities at United have proved thin on the ground, with Henderson restricted to two outings in the Carabao Cup and the 2-1 Champions League defeat away to Istanbul Basaksehir.

And, according to The Sun, Henderson would like another loan move away from Old Trafford in January to ensure he makes Gareth Southgate's squad next summer.

Premier League duo Leeds United and Brighton, plus Championship promotion hopefuls Bournemouth, have been linked with Henderson.

The stopper agreed to a new contract through until 2025 after being included in United's first team squad for the first time back in August.

But after making clear that he had designs to be United's No 1 at the time, Henderson has been left largely frustrated.

Any loan move would be Henderson's sixth since 2016. He has previously spent time on loan at Stockport County, Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town before two successful spells with Sheffield United.

Default Re: Dean Henderson

It's a family fortune! Man United goalkeeper Dean Henderson's uncle wins £12,500 off a £25 bet on him playing for England, placed when he was just 14 years old... and his mum and gran had money on too!

* Dean Henderson made his bow for the Three Lions against Ireland this month
* His first cap landed his uncle £12,500 after making a bet when he was just 14
* Henderson was a schoolboy at Carlisle at the time before moving to Old Trafford
* Martin Plunkett said it was clear that his nephew was destined for great things

Dean Henderson's uncle has won a £12,500 bet with the bookies after backing the Manchester United goalkeeper to play for England when he was just a teenager.

Martin Plunkett decided to make the wager when Henderson was a 14-year-old at Carlisle United as he placed a £25 stake with odds of 500/1, and is now set to receive the payout after he came on against the Republic of Ireland this month.

The 23-year-old was a second half substitute for Nick Pope and helped keep the clean sheet as Gareth Southgate's men won 3-0. Henderson's mother and grandmother also won £2,500 after betting £50 each - but by that point he had already moved to United, slashing the odds.

Dean Henderson's uncle won £12,500 after the goalkeeper made his England debut this month. The 23-year-old came on as a substitute for Nick Pope in England's win over Republic of Ireland

Plunkett said the goalkeeper was 'chuffed' at the bet coming in and said he was fully deserving of his cap following a breakthrough season with Sheffield United last term.

He told the Mirror: 'I haven't spoken to Dean about the bet but he did text after the game last Thursday to tell his mother, "Have we all got the money?"

'We told him we got confirmation from William Hill that the bet was alright so yeah, he was chuffed for us. He's a good lad. He deserves it.'

Henderson spent six years with Carlisle having joined as a schoolboy before linking up with United's academy in 2011. He has risen up the youth ranks and has been sent out on loan five times before shining in two spells for Sheffield United.

Martin Plunkett bet on Henderson playing for England when he was just 14 years old at Carlisle. Henderson is currently second choice at United and is reportedly seeking a loan to become England's No 1 at the Euros next summer

Plunkett insisted his talent was clear to see even at a very young age, with many bookmakers unwilling to accept the bet.

'Anyone you ever spoke to who knew about him would tell you he'll go to the top,' he added.

'So obviously you have a little bet don't you? To be fair, it was only William Hill that would take the bet.'

Henderson was tipped to be both Manchester United and England's No 1 after some dominant displays in goal for the Blades last term, but has returned to Old Trafford as second choice to David de Gea.

He signed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils in August but has made it clear he intends to be first choice.

Recent reports have claimed he is seeking another loan away in January to boost his prospects of dethroning Pickford as England's first choice shot-stopper at next summer's Euros.

Leeds and Brighton are said to be possible destinations with time running out for him to impress Southgate.

Default Re: Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson was the loudest player on the pitch as Man United came from behind at Southampton... now, after much frustration, he could get his big chance to impress against PSG with David de Gea potentially out injured for crunch clash

* Dean Henderson replaced the injured David de Gea at half-time during Manchester United's 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday
* De Gea will have a scan on Monday after taking a knock just above the knee
* It means Henderson could get his big chance against PSG on Wednesday
* 23-year-old has found opportunities scarce since returning to Old Trafford
* Speculation he might take another loan move in January have surfaced
* But Henderson was vocal and showed leadership in Southampton fightback

Football works in mysterious ways. Just as more and more stories were emerging about Dean Henderson taking another loan move away from Old Trafford in January, he could get the chance he's been waiting for.

There's a chance the 23-year-old is poised to line up in the most important match of his career so far when Manchester United face Paris Saint-Germain in a crunch Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Of course, it all depends on the severity of the knock David de Gea suffered just above his knee when he crashed into the post desperately trying to keep out a James Ward-Prowse free-kick on Sunday.

Dean Henderson celebrates as Manchester United came back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Southampton on Sunday. Henderson, who replaced the injured David de Gea at half-time, was United's most vocal

The Spaniard is set for a scan on Monday and both he and Henderson will face an anxious wait for the outcome.

But if De Gea is ruled out of Wednesday night's game at Old Trafford, then Henderson will get his long-awaited opportunity to impress and show he is United's rightful No 1.

No doubt Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Co will keep him busier than Southampton did in the second-half on Sunday, after Henderson replaced De Gea at half-time for his United Premier League debut.

A couple of early saves apart, Henderson was little more than a thrilled spectator as United launched into one of those never-say-die comebacks that used to be their hallmark.

When Edinson Cavani made it 2-2 and then headed their 92nd-minute winner, Henderson was seen leaping in celebration down the other end. Afterwards, he took to Twitter and described the fightback as 'the United way'.

De Gea is set for a scan on Monday but could miss United's crunch meeting with PSG. But it could be an opportunity at last for Henderson, who has found his game time limited

But what observers both inside the stadium and those watching on TV at home noticed was how vocal Henderson was during that second-half.

The loudest player in United colours, it was Henderson urging his team-mates to push forward in pursuit of the winner while organising things to ensure they couldn't be stung on the counter.

It didn't go unnoticed that it was his voice, rather than that of captain Harry Maguire or Bruno Fernandes, that echoed loudest around the empty St Mary's Stadium.

In a season when United have been accused of lacking leadership on the pitch, it was certainly refreshing.

'He's a keeper who has been used to being vocal. He wants to organise the team,' manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.

Henderson had a couple of saves to make but was largely a spectator in United's comeback. It was Henderson's first outing since United's disastrous defeat away by Istanbul Basaksehir. Henderson's competition seems to have raised de Gea's game so far this season

Those qualities will prove essential if Henderson plays against PSG on Wednesday night. With the Parisians far from assured of their last-16 place, United's backline, which continues to look jittery, can expect to be put under severe pressure.

Henderson will have saves to make, there's no question of that, and if he can prove he can cut it in such a big game, the outlook may change.

When Henderson decided against a sixth loan away from United back in August, signing a new contract through until 2025, he no doubt expected a bit more game time than has materialised.

Two starts in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup, against Luton Town and Brighton, offering scant consolation for warming the bench in every Premier League game.

Henderson started the disastrous Champions League defeat by Istanbul Basaksehir, though it was his defence to blame for the embarrassment.

A mere 270 minutes of action prior to his substitute outing on Sunday wasn't quite what the England international expected at the start of the season.

Worse still, his presence seemed to have some kind of galvanising effect on De Gea, who responded to the competition by largely cutting out the errors that had infected his game.

Solskjaer kept faith with the Spaniard, who has been United's first choice keeper for nine seasons, in what was the honourable thing to do.

As former United captain Roy Keane said in the Sky Sports studio on Sunday: 'I think it helped [De Gea] that Henderson came back to the club.

'I think he's got proper competition there now. Every day, they can look each other in the eye.

Henderson celebrated Sunday's win on Twitter, calling the comeback 'the United way'

'If he makes too many mistakes - as many as he's made over the last few years - he knows Henderson will be in.'

Henderson was certainly outspoken back in the summer about how he had returned to United with the intention of dislodging De Gea from his position.

It hasn't worked out that way. But now an opportunity may arise, not because De Gea made a mistake but through the misfortune of injury.

And he can't be under any illusions. Even a solid performance against PSG doesn't make him an automatic starter for Saturday's trip to West Ham if De Gea is fit again.

But it may head off suggestions Henderson will look for a loan move in January. Understandably, his concern is about his place in the England squad for next summer's European Championship.

His fellow keepers Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope are first choice for Everton and Burnley respectively but there really isn't anyone else in the wider England squad pool to push Henderson out.

Henderson made his senior England debut earlier this month in the 3-0 win over Ireland. Henderson and Nick Pope (right) are likely to be back-up to Jordan Pickford at Euro 2020

The fact Henderson made his senior debut off the bench in England's 3-0 friendly win over the Republic of Ireland - a moment that netted his uncle £12,500 after he placed a 500/1 bet when Dean was 14 - shows he is very much in Gareth Southgate's thinking for Euro 2020.

And even if Henderson does remain second choice to De Gea, there will be plenty of chances before the end of the season.

United will fancy their chances of winning the Carabao Cup and Henderson should also play their FA Cup games. If United get the point they require to make it through to the Champions League last-16, he may also play against RB Leipzig next week.

In the meantime, if De Gea's knee injury does rule him out for Wednesday, all Henderson can do is be his usual vocal self and give a good account of himself against last season's Champions League runners-up.

The rest will, sooner or later, fall nicely into place.

Default Re: Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson's 'exceptional' talent was recognised by Carlisle at the age of 11 and by THIRTEEN he was training with the first team... a decade on, and with an England cap to his name, he now has the chance to stake a claim as Manchester United's No 1

* Dean Henderson made his league debut for Manchester United on Sunday
* The goalkeeper joined the club at the age of 14 after leaving local side Carlisle
* His former coaches recalled him training with their first-team when he was 13
* There has always been belief in his hometown that he would be England's No 1
* Henderson could start against PSG on Wednesday if David de Gea is injured

Usually when a young hopeful joins a club at the age Dean Henderson was picked up by Carlisle they get one-year contracts and a season to prove they deserve another.

'Dean representing Carlisle, that was the dream that we all had, myself, first-team goalkeeper coach Tony Caig and the head of youth Eric Kinder,' Ben Benson, Carlisle's former head of academy goalkeeping, recalls.

'So much so that we tied him down to a six-year contract. At under-11 we signed him until he was 16! That shows we knew we had an exceptional boy on our hands.'

Dean Henderson made his Manchester United Premier League debut against Southampton

To borrow an analogy from Benson, Manchester United and Henderson's loan clubs – Stockport, Grimsby, Shrewsbury and Sheffield United - have helped put the house together but it is at Carlisle where the foundations were laid.

Henderson, who made his long-awaited United league debut against Southampton on Sunday, initially joined Carlisle as an outfield player when his potential was spotted at a local soccer camp.

He displayed those first hints of his goalkeeping potential to a wider audience after donning the gloves at the end of one training session and continued to alternate between being a keeper and outfield player for the rest of the season. Henderson settled on being a stopper going into his under 11 season.

He joined Carlisle's academy at the age of 11 and impressed enough to get a six-year contract

Having two older brothers, Kyle and Callum, who had inadvertently prepared him for life between the sticks by pulling rank and putting him in goal during sibling knockabouts is one theory as to why Henderson took so well to being a goalkeeper at Carlisle. Benson, now goalkeeping coach at Blackburn, has another.

He said: 'He enjoyed the detail of goalkeeping, the intricacies of the position. He caught the goalkeeping bug.

'Even now we'll meet up and he'll want to go through this, have a look at this or ask 'what do you think?' That thirst for knowledge has never really left him.'

His former coaches said the goalkeeper has always been determined to improve himself

Recalling one occasion at Carlisle that sticks in his mind, Benson said: 'He was in the under 13s, playing a year up and we played Burnley. They were notoriously a fantastic team and the score was 12-0, something like that.

'Dean comes off, frustrated, angry, bit upset, only 12 years-old and I said "Dean what's the matter I thought you did fantastic". He said '"h I thought I should have done better with the sixth goal. I should have gone with my longest hand, my top hand" etc etc.

'He said "can we stay out and do some now?" We stayed back for another half hour, 40 minutes. All he wanted to do was recreate that goal, recreate that moment and get it right in his own mind and that's one thing among other things that really sticks out. How driven he was and the ability to fail fast and fix fast. To correct and want to correct was massive for him.'

They were key attributes when Carlisle were fast-tracking his transition from outfield player to goalkeeper.

'Considering everything was quite new, his biggest asset in my opinion was his retention of information and his ability to act on it,' Benson said.

'You only had to tell him something once. He is also unbelievably headstrong and that is a fantastic trait to have in this industry. Playing the position he does you do have to have thick skin.'

Over a decade on that same desire and ability to bounce back at the earliest opportunity remains noticeable in Henderson.

Henderson has bounced back from the mistakes he has made during various loan spells. He kept two clean sheets for Sheffield United after a costly error against Liverpool last season

Following a Yorkshire derby mistake which gifted Leeds a late winner in December 2018 Henderson kept a clean sheet the next week against Reading.

After having the finger pointed at him when Sheffield United blew a three-goal lead at Aston Villa, also last season, he responded with seven successive shut-outs.

Two more clean sheets followed last season in response to a high-profile mistake against Liverpool.

'Some sports people are like that,' Caig said. 'They use little setbacks as fuel to drive them on to be better.

'Dean's attitude is he wants to prove he is the best but he's not looking for people to come out and say it, he is doing it for himself.'

Not too long after that Burnley game Benson remembers Henderson was then invited to train with Carlisle's first-team goalkeepers aged just 13, another indication of the prodigious talent on the Cumbrian's books.

Caig, now Livingston first-team coach, said: 'They [the senior keepers] were looking at me initially like 'what? 13?'

'I'm like 'yeah, when you see him you'll know what I mean! I'll let his goalkeeping do the talking.

'He was just so eager to do well and impress. He was never fazed. The way he moved, his technique, desire to keep the ball out of the net, personality and character, all of that shone through, even at that age.

'He was quick and athletic, understood the position in terms of where he needs to be and nearly all the time uses the correct technique.

'You can always get a gauge by how the other senior goalkeepers react to him and they were all like 'God, who's this kid?' and he obviously wasn't shy. He had a personality so it was just a case of time.'

Having to step and play above his age, sometimes two years, was a recurring feature of Henderson's time at Carlisle.

Benson added: 'He wasn't just the best goalkeeper in his age group, he was the best in the age above as well. That's probably the biggest compliment I could give him and gave us a really good yardstick.'

The 'keeper has impressed in the four appearances he has made in the 2020-2021 campaign

Carlisle's dream of the local lad reaching the first team never became a reality with Henderson joining United, the club he supported, in 2011

Though Carlisle's dream of the local lad reaching their first team never became a reality.

'It became quickly quite evident that was never going to happen because he was going to go before he got anywhere near our first team,' Caig said.

Newcastle were keen but when the team he supported Manchester United – first alerted to Henderson when he attended one of their soccer schools 18 months earlier – came calling in 2011 the outcome was almost inevitable.

Since returning from his second loan spell at Sheffield United in the summer, Henderson has had to wait longer than many expected for his first Premier League chance.

But it is widely considered only a matter of time before he becomes not just Manchester United's No1, but England's too.

Henderson made his senior England debut against the Republic of Ireland in November. The 23-year-old's former coaches believe he can be England and United's No 1 in the future

Both Benson and Caig were keen to stress they have played just a small part and many clubs and people deserve the credit for where Henderson is today, especially the man himself.

Benson added: 'As a county we are unbelievably proud of him. For a boy from West Cumbria, which isn't a massive footballing county, to have done what he has done very early in his career is fantastic.'

Caig added: 'What motivates Deano is himself. That desire every day to be the best and be better.

'That's why, all being well for him you can see him playing in the Premier League for the next 10-15 years and you can see him getting a lot of caps for his country.'

Default Re: Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson's Bramall Lane blunder was a reminder he still has some way to go to challenge David De Gea... but late saves show youngster has potential to be special

* Dean Henderson was handed second start for Manchester United on Thursday
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the bold call of playing him vs Sheffield United
* On his Bramall Lane return Henderson committed a blunder inside five minutes
* Oliver Burke pressured the ball and David McGoldrick was able to slot home

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke earlier this week about the ‘different demands’ he places on Dean Henderson compared to the goalkeeper’s time at Sheffield United, the ability to pass the ball out from the back was no doubt one of them.

It made what happened on his return to Bramall Lane with Manchester United on Thursday night all the more horrible for Henderson.

The 23-year-old made just one solitary mistake that led to Sheffield United conceding a goal in the Premier League last season, allowing Georginio Wijnaldum’s volley to squirm through his legs in a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

An early blunder on his return to Bramall Lane showed the work Dean Henderson still must do

England’s new goalkeeper took less than six minutes to make another one after being selected to start against his former club in place of David de Gea.

You sensed the Blades knew something we didn’t about their old team-mate when no fewer than four players crowded around him in the six-yard box at an early corner.

And when Henderson received a back-pass from Harry Maguire – another Blades old-boy – shortly afterwards, Oliver Burke was primed to close down the United keeper as quickly as possible.

Oliver Burke closed down Henderson after routine back-pass, causing him to quickly panic. The young 'keeper spilled the ball out as far as David McGoldrick who slotted it home. Henderson and another former Blade Harry Maguire could only watch on as the goal went in

He succeeded, taking advantage of Henderson’s indecision to block the clearance and then touch the ball for David McGoldrick to score in an empty net.

It was an awful moment for Henderson and his manager who made the decision to hand United’s No.2 keeper only his second league start for the club since returning from two impressive seasons on loan at Bramall Lane.

It’s not as if Henderson didn’t know what was coming either. ‘If we think we can just roll in here and take three points easily we’ve got another thing coming,’ he said before kick-off. ‘Sheffield United are going to come flying out of the traps.’

Henderson played a part in United’s equaliser on his only other start at West Ham 12 days earlier when VAR couldn’t prove that his booming clearance went out of play before Bruno Fernandes set up Paul Pogba to score.

But he got himself into a real muddle here. To be fair, he had little chance with McGoldrick’s second and then pulled off a fine save from Lys Mousset to preserve the win. But the image of that first goal will endure.

We have heard a lot about Henderson and how he will not be happy sitting on the bench. There is no shortage of self-confidence.

Since rejoining United in the summer, he has signed a new contract, made his Champions League debut and become a senior England international.

But this was a reminder to us all that Henderson still has some work to do before he can be considered a real threat to De Gea.

mungkin diawal pertandingan agak gugup karena 2 musim dipinjamkan ke Sheffield sekarang malah harus jadi lawan. jangan blunder lagi Henderson, kalo gak susah nih mau dimainkan jadi starter, bakal makin susah menggeser De Gea sbg kiper utama
