THE STORY OF LAST SEASON'S HOME WIN OVER SPURS

When Manchester United welcomed Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on 28 October 2017, two of the Premier League’s most in-form teams at the start of last season were going head to head.

The Reds had won all four of our previous home league matches without conceding, while Spurs had taken maximum points from their first four away games, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Indeed, both teams had taken 20 points from the first nine league outings heading into the Saturday lunchtime encounter, so something had to give at the Theatre of Dreams.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs – who were without injured top scorer Harry Kane on the day – proved a tough challenge for United to overcome but, thankfully, the Reds came out on top in a hard-fought game as Anthony Martial stepped off the bench to score the only goal in the 81st minute.

'WE DESERVED TO WIN'

United boss Jose Mourinho acknowledged that it was a tough game, against a Spurs team who were among the early pacesetters last term, but felt his side merited the three points.

“I think we got what we deserved,” the boss reacted. “It was a difficult match that could have been a draw between two big teams. I think both were trying to win but both knew that their opponent was strong, so [we] tried to win but with one eye on the thief.”

Jose went on: “We controlled them very well and I think we had more chances to win the match than they had, but it was a big football match, tactically difficult for both teams and tactically difficult for the players. [We had] a good referee [in Jon Moss] with just one yellow card in a match that was strong, aggressive, and every 50-50 was like the last challenge of their lives.”

Phil Jones also reflected on a job well done by the Reds, as he played in a three-man defence which kept Spurs’ free-scoring attack at bay.

“Any time you keep a clean sheet is massive,” our no.4 told MUTV after the game. “I felt we never really felt threatened, like they were going to cause us a problem in terms of scoring, so we’re pleased, we’ve got the clean sheet and a valuable three points too.”

REDS LOOKING TO KEEP POSITIVE RECORD GOING

United will be hoping to maintain a strong run of results against Tottenham at Old Trafford in recent seasons when the sides meet on Monday night.

The Reds have won 21 of our 26 Premier League home matches against Spurs and have beaten the north London outfit on their last four visits to the Theatre of Dreams in the league without conceding a goal.

Interestingly, the home team have won the last seven Premier League meetings between the sides, stretching back to March 2015. Let’s hope that trend continues in our favour!

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO UNITED V TOTTENHAM

Manchester United conclude the first month of the new season with a testing clash against top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Reds are looking to make it two wins out of two at home after kicking off the 2018/19 Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

However, after the disappointing 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, Jose Mourinho’s men will be determined to return to winning ways, against a Spurs side who have finished in the top three in each of the last three seasons in the top flight.

Our match preview is here to get you up to speed as we head towards the third Premier League weekend of the season…

ANY EARLY TEAM NEWS?
Diogo Dalot, Nemanja Matic, Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Alexis Sanchez all missed the trip to Brighton last weekend and it remains to be seen if the quintet will return against Spurs. Ander Herrera was an unused substitute at the Amex Stadium and could make his first appearance since coming off injured against Bayern Munich in pre-season.

HOW ABOUT TOTTENHAM?
Mauricio Pochettino is set to be without Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama, who is being troubled by a knee problem, and Dutch striker Vincent Janssen, who has a minor foot injury. Young defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers (groin) and Juan Foyth (thigh) are also expected to be sidelined again.

HOW HAVE TOTTENHAM STARTED THE SEASON?
Spurs are one of six teams who won both of their opening two league games. The Lilywhites opened with a hard-fought 2-1 win away at Newcastle United, thanks to goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli. With their new stadium still being completed, the North London club are continuing to play their home games at Wembley, where they beat newly-promoted Fulham 3-1. Leading marksman Harry Kane scored in the month of August for the first time, while Lucas Moura netted his first Premier League goal since joining the club in January and Kieran Trippier was also on target in his first appearance since starring at the World Cup for England.

WHO’S THE REFEREE?
Craig Pawson will take charge of Monday’s game at Old Trafford. The FIFA whistler from Sheffield handled six United matches last season and has issued red cards in each of his first two Premier League fixtures of 2018/19. He will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Richard West, while Jon Moss – who refereed the Reds' 1-0 home win over Spurs last term – is the fourth official.

WHAT’S THE LATEST FROM JOSE?
The boss is set to hold his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday and you'll be able to follow live updates on ManUtd.com and in our new official app.

MOURINHO EXCLUSIVE: WE'LL BE READY FOR SPURS

Jose Mourinho spoke exclusively to us on Friday afternoon ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night. Here’s what the manager had to say about our preparations and what kind of game he expects against Spurs…

How have the players reacted to last weekend’s defeat against Brighton?
“I think nobody is happy, obviously. I have enough experience to know that in football you cannot look back for good results or bad results; you have always to look to the next one. That’s our life. I’m really happy with the work we did in the week and with the players’ commitment and I look forward to the game.”

Is it frustrating that you have to wait until Monday night to play?
“You can look at it from two different perspectives. From one side I would say yes but on another side I would say we need time to work and some time to try to recover some players from injury. So it was not bad for us.”

Do you have any team news for us ahead of the game?
“Today is Friday – we still have Saturday and Sunday to make decisions but let’s wait and see.”

Are you expecting a close game against Tottenham?
“Just looking at Leicester and Brighton – against Leicester we didn’t make mistakes and we played well, we won. Against Brighton, we made mistakes and we paid for the mistakes and we lost. I think you look at football in a pragmatic way – normally you get what you deserve, so if you want to win against a big team, you cannot make mistakes.”

Will it be a big boost to play under the floodlights in front of our fans at Old Trafford?
“That’s what we tried to do last season and in big matches last season managed to get lots of good results, which in the end are points, like the other points. But for the supporters normally it has a little different feeling.”

Have you been surprised by the level of scrutiny and backlash after just one game [the defeat against Brighton]?
“I don’t know because I didn’t read.”

Are you excited for the game on Monday night to come around?
“Of course. I love to play football and love to stand from the touchline. I’m always looking forward to our matches, especially after a negative result [because] what you want is to play again.”
