Default William Carvalho

How Man Utd target William Carvalho showed he is the real deal in his World Cup debut for Portugal

Aged 22 and said to be commanding a fee significantly north of £30 million, despite being yet to play at a level higher than the Portuguese league with Sporting Lisbon, it is safe to say that Portugal midfielder William Carvalho’s domestic performances this season have created a buzz.

The central midfielder has been consistently linked with clubs of the ilk of Manchester United and Real Madrid since bursting onto the Sporting scene this season and was handed the perfect chance to live up to the hype during with his maiden World Cup appearance for Portugal against USA last night. Replacing Andre Almeida at half-time, with Miguel Veloso shifting to left-back, Carvalho impressed as Portugal struggled to a 2-2 draw that keeps their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Still in possession of just a handful of international caps, Carvalho’s performance suggested that he could be capable of making the step up to a higher level, justifying the hype that has seen him become a fixture in the transfer gossip columns since the turn of the year.

Carvalho passes v USA

The 22-year-old completed 97% of his passes over the second half, misplacing just one. These saw him spray the ball from side to side well, shown on the pass map above, proving a more dynamic option than Veloso.

Of Portuguese outfield players to have featured in the World Cup so far, only centre-backs Bruno Alves and Pepe have longer average pass lengths than Carvalho; an impressive statistic given his 97% pass success and one that proves key to spraying the ball around and launching quick attacks for a side with pace going forward in the form of Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carvalho touches v USA

Anchoring the midfield at the heart of Portugal’s central diamond, Real Madrid and Manchester United target Carvalho added the bite that Veloso lacked. While Veloso was tidy enough in possession during his 45 minutes of midfield action, making all of his attempted tackles, Carvalho added a physical presence marshalling the midfield that his compatriot couldn’t.

Carvalho tackles v USA

Veloso made just one first half tackle, a fraction of the three that Carvalho did, while two further challenges saw Carvalho win his side free kicks. Carvalho completed as many tackles in his 45 minutes of action as Veloso has managed in 155 minutes and made more than any other player on the pitch last night – in spite of playing only half of the game.

The World Cup often sees a player catapulted into the big time and make a name for themselves and Carvalho could be on the cusp of joining Joel Campbell and Divock Origi in earning himself a shot at the Premier League or La Liga this summer.

Having performed so well from the bench against USA, Carvalho will be optimistic of being given the opportunity to impress from the start of Portugal’s all-important final group game with Ghana on Thursday.

Should he do so, then his stock could rise further. If he were to sustain his second half cameo from Sunday over a whole game, admittedly a big if, then Carvalho would further enhance his credentials to any potential suitors, having made more tackles and passes than both his potential rivals for the role – Veloso and Raul Meireles – when his performance is extrapolated to per 90 minutes.

Paulo Bento yet to find the right player for the base of his midfield this tournament, but the stats suggest that Carvalho could be that man, giving the Portuguese boss a selection head-ache ahead of their make or break final game.

Default Re: William Carvalho

Is Portugal’s William Carvalho the midfielder Man United crave?

Portugal’s World Cup campaign was one to forget, as the average European outfit could not be carried by a seemingly half-fit Cristiano Ronaldo and tamely limped out of a difficult Group G.

As such, few of Paulo Bento’s men emerged from the tournament in Brazil with their reputations enhanced, but highly sought after Man United target William Carvalho did.

The competition was the opportunity for many to see the burly 22-year-old in action and he certainly stood out during his second half substitute appearance against the USA in his side’s second fixture.

However, his performances over the course of the Portuguese domestic season has gradually seen his hype build, with plenty adamant that he is capable of making the step up to the next level.

Although the league is regarded as a hotbed of talent it is not the most prestigious and players that arrive in Europe’s top leagues but from Portugal do so with scepticism attached.

But is the buzz surrounding Carvalho justified and should Manchester United, the club most regularly linked with his signature make him their third signing of the summer?

The Red Devils need players of unique quality within their ranks during the next campaign if they are to reverse the dramatic slump they were forced to endure last season.

In other words, in terms of their midfield contingent, they need someone for the here and now, ready to carry the mantle and be a driving force in the centre of the park.

Carvalho is combative to say the least, highlighted by the 16 tackles he attempted during the group stages in South America this summer. Although he emerged with the ball on just seven occasions, his physical frame and stature suggest that he would not allow games to merely pass him by at Old Trafford, which was often the downfall of the downtrodden Tom Cleverley.

William Carvalho Duels Won At The World Cup

Energy was missing at the Theatre of Dreams and Carvalho possesses it in abundance. He hassles opponents on the ball, but is also solid when in possession of it himself. A passing accuracy of 92% suggests that he will not be wasteful.

During the victory against Ghana, which appears typical of his game, he often played small interchanges in front of is back four, yet also looked to the flanks regularly. Given Portugal’s strengths in such areas, led by Ronaldo, it is unsurprising.

Depending on how new boss Louis van Gaal decides to set out his team, Carvalho could provide the shield that is likely to be deployed by the Dutchman.

William Carvalho Passes Completed vs Ghana (85% Pass Success)

However, while the Portuguese midfielder can bring energy and determination he looks unlikely to be a playmaker, able of carving out an abundance of opportunities. He completed just one pass into Ghana’s final third during the game yet failed in several long searching balls that sought to cut a number of his opponents out of the game.

If given the opportunity, Carvalho certainly possesses the engine to be more of a box-to-box midfielder, but dynamism cannot account for a lack of class in tight areas. Adept at sitting in front of his defence, he would be likely to fulfil a job similar to the one Michael Carrick has been deployed in in recent years but with fresh legs, added impetus and a physical presence.

The vast sum of money quoted as the one necessary to prise the Portuguese to England could have a large bearing on any potential deal. With a fee in the region of £30 million, many have baulked at the buy-out clause.

Given that long-term target Toni Kroos is set to join Real Madrid for just £20 million, the fee seems to be inflated, with the German commanding proven pedigree.

The club have showed they mean business with the captures of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera capture, but can they afford to have another player set for their starting line up with such little experience at the highest level?

Of course if you’re good enough, you’re old enough - but he could represent one risk too far. The crux of the team will be built on Carvalho’s position in midfield and inexperience could come back to haunt United.

However, given the way in which Paul Pogba has flourished when given a chance after turning his back on the club, Carvalho could yet thrive in a similar fashion in surroundings that are geared towards success despite recent struggles.

United would undoubtedly pay a large proportion of the fee for Carvalho based on potential, but he has plenty of it.
