UEFA Club Football Awards
UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year
The nominees in this category are: Petr Čech (Chelsea FC) Chelsea's Czech No1 showed his standards remain sky-high during a campaign where he helped the London club record the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League alongside Manchester United, with just 24 goals conceded. In the UEFA Champions League he was the only custodian to leave Camp Nou with his goal unbreached – indeed the first to achieve the feat in any competition in 2008/09 – and though Chelsea eventually lost out to the Catalans, an FA Cup winners' medal and Czech Player of the Year award provided some recompense. Víctor Valdés (FC Barcelona) The spotlight may have shone on more celebrated colleagues further upfield but Barcelona’s homegrown No1 played his own telling role in the club's unprecedented treble success at home and in Europe, earning in the process the Zamora award for Spanish football's best keeper. For all the goals flying in at the other end, the 27-year-old remained alert to make key saves when called upon, notably from Didier Drogba when the big striker broke through in both legs of the Azulgrana's tightly contested UEFA Champions League semi-final against Chelsea FC. Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United FC) The Dutchman showed that, at 38, he remains a formidable presence between the posts, exuding calm and assurance during United's run of 1,334 minutes without conceding a Premier League goal. Those 14 clean sheets proved pivotal to their third successive domestic title and he was equally reliable in the UEFA Champions League, conceding just three goals in nine games from the group stage to the semi-finals, so ensuring the disappointment of United's final defeat – his second at the Stadio Olimpico – would not detract from an impressive overall contribution. |

Re: UEFA Player of The Year award (nominee)
UEFA Club Defender of the Year
The nominees in this category are: Gerard Piqué (FC Barcelona) The 2008/09 season marked a happy homecoming for Gerard Piqué, his return to Barcelona from Manchester United bringing out the very best in the 22-year-old who morphed from Old Trafford bench-warmer to integral member of the Azulgrana defence. With Pique displaying impressive aerial ability and composure – not least in the UEFA Champions League semi-final at Chelsea – he helped Josep Guardiola's side overcome the loss of some key defenders. His reward came with a starting role in the final win over United at the Stadio Olimpico 12 months after he had not even made the bench for his old club's triumph in Moscow. John Terry (Chelsea FC) The Chelsea captain shrugged aside the effects of his team's midwinter dip and ended the campaign on a high by holding aloft the FA Cup. A famously tough competitor with the bravery of the classic British centre-half, he helped his team finish the Premier League campaign with a defensive record bettered by nobody – and also showed his set-piece threat in the opposition penalty box by scoring late winning goals for England against both Germany in Berlin and Ukraine in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. Nemanja Vidić (Manchester United FC) The powerful Serbian did as much as any player to retain United's hold on the Premier League trophy, his partnership with Rio Ferdinand providing a redoubtable defensive barrier. He underlined his importance by ensuring Ferdinand's absence was not felt during the team's record run of 14 clean sheets in the domestic competition – when he was the only ever-present in United's back four. "A fantastic performer" was Sir Alex Ferguson's verdict on the hugely committed defender who was equally effective in Europe, where United conceded just six goals in 12 games en route to Rome. |

Re: UEFA Player of The Year award (nominee)
UEFA Club Midfielder of the Year
The nominees in this category are: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC) Liverpool's captain may not have ended the season with silverware but it was not through want of trying as the Merseysiders pushed Manchester United FC harder than for many years. Gerrard shone in a second-striker role behind Fernando Torres, hitting 24 goals – seven of them in the UEFA Champions League plus a career-best 16 in the Premier League. The highlight of his campaign was the week in March when he struck twice in a 4-0 rout of Real Madrid CF then found the net again as Liverpool crushed United 4-1 at Old Trafford. Xavi Hernández (FC Barcelona) "This kid will retire me," Pep Guardiola said of Xavi when the Barcelona coach was nearing the end of his days as the team’s midfield metronome. Guardiola noted Xavi’s rich promise then; now he is reaping the full benefits of a talent in its prime. Fresh from guiding his country to UEFA EURO 2008™ glory, the 29-year-old Camp Nou playmaker conquered Europe with his club. His display in the UEFA Champions League final underlined his season-long excellence as, besides orchestrating what Manchester United FC boss Sir Alex Ferguson called Barcelona's "passing carousel", he set up the clinching second goal for Lionel Messi with a precise far-post cross. Andrés Iniesta (FC Barcelona) The man from La Mancha may shun the spotlight but there was no escaping it after his dazzling contribution to Barcelona's treble-winning campaign. His masterful movement, his ability to create space and find a pass meant the Azulgrana's midfield opponents had much more than Xavi Hernández to worry about. Indeed coach Pep Guardiola called him "the best player I have ever seen" and Wayne Rooney repeated the message after the UEFA Champions League final – a match Barcelona were only in, remember, thanks to Iniesta's superbly driven, last-gasp goal at Chelsea FC in the semi-final. |

Re: UEFA Player of The Year award (nominee)
UEFA Club Forward of the Year
The nominees in this category are: Samuel Eto'o (FC Barcelona) The 2008/09 season saw the Cameroon striker at the peak of his predatory powers. The 28-year-old hit 30 goals in the Spanish Liga to help lift titlewinners Barcelona's final total to an incredible 105 from their 38 matches. In the UEFA Champions League he struck another six, qualifiers included, and none more valuable than the opening strike in the final against Manchester United FC as he hoodwinked Nemanja Vidić before beating Edwin van der Sar at his near post. It was his second goal in as many UEFA Champions League finals – and helped bring his second winners' medal. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) The nine-goal leading scorer in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League undoubtedly saved the best to last with the high leap and header that not only brought his first goal against English opposition but, more significantly, sealed a 2-0 final triumph over Manchester United and, with it, an unprecedented treble. If an unusual effort from a player best known for his quick feet and balance, it showcased the full breadth of the 22-year-old's ability, capping a season which also brought him 23 Liga goals as he terrorised defences in Spain with his slalom runs and shooting skills. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF) When it became clear Ronaldo was not repeating his 42-goal haul of 2007/08, one opponent was moved to utter that the Portuguese forward was only human after all. The next day Ronaldo replied with a stunning 40-metre goal at FC Porto to move Manchester United into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Another drive from an improbable distance followed against Arsenal FC in the last four – one of 25 goals last season – and though Rome marked a disappointing end to his United career, the 24-year-old had still earned a third Premier League winners' medal to take with him to Spain. |

Re: Edwin van der Sar
Wah parah ga ada yg nyelametin om VDS, doi KIPER TERBAIK EROPA SKRG!!!! 27/08/2009 18:32, Report by Gemma Thompson Edwin named top stopper Edwin van der Sar was named UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year following his Champions League exploits last season, and Sir Alex Ferguson described the Dutchman's dedication to remaining at the top of the game as "absolutely unbelievable." The veteran stopper, who kept seven clean sheets in Europe last term, fought off competition from Chelsea's Petr Cech and Barcelona's Victor Valdes to scoop the goalkeeper gong. He was presented with his award in Monaco prior to the draw for this season's group stages. "The award couldn't have gone to a better professional," Sir Alex told ManUtd.com. "Edwin's dedication to football in the last few years has been absolutely unbelievable. "It's an award that is thorougly deserved and I think everyone in football will applaud that." Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic lost out to John Terry in the UEFA Club Defender of the Year category, while Lionel Messi pipped former Red Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Club Forward of the Year nominations. |
