Armed with elegance, pace and an astute ability to read the game, Rio Ferdinand is one of the finest defenders in world football.

The Peckham-born star burst onto the Premiership scene with West Ham United under the guidance of Harry Redknapp before being snapped up by Leeds United for £18million in November 2000.

The 2002 World Cup provided Rio with the stage to make the transformation from budding talent to accomplished defender, and his performances in Japan convinced Sir Alex to part with £30million.

Although initially hampered by injury, Rio found his feet towards the end of his first season, as United came back from the dead to overtake Arsenal and win a 15th league title.

In September 2003 disaster struck. The defender missed a routine drugs test and, despite appealing, was banned from football for eight months in January 2004.

Since returning from suspension, Rio has consistently justified his tag as a world-class defender. He's also chipped in with valuable goals, perhaps most dramatically with an injury-time winner against Liverpool in January 2006.

Although an increasingly potent threat from set-pieces, Rio’s main asset remains his leadership in defence, a skill that has made him a solid foundation for both United and England and seen him handed the captaincy for club and country on numerous occasions.

In May 2008, Ferdinand signed a new five-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2013. Six days later he went on to captain United to Champions League glory in Moscow. It was a fitting way to end a near flawless season for the centre-back.

His good form continued into the 2008/09 campaign, with Ferdinand playing a crucial role in United's record-breaking clean-sheet run. Certainly, without his consistent performances at the back, the Reds may not have gone on to win an 18th league title or reach a second successive European final. Sadly Sir Alex's men lost to Barcelona in Rome, although things may well have been different had Ferdinand been fully fit (a calf injury hampered Rio's preparations).

Rio Gavin Ferdinand (born 7 November 1978) is an English footballer. He plays at centre back for Manchester United in the Premier League and at the international level for the England national football team. He has achieved 70 caps for the English national team while being selected for three FIFA World Cup squads. He is currently the vice-captain of the England national team and stand-in captain for Manchester United.


Personal life

Ferdinand grew up in the Friary council estate, Peckham. He has several brothers and sisters: one brother and three sisters on his father's side and a brother and sister from his mother's remarriage. One of his brothers is Anton Ferdinand, the Sunderland defender, while former England striker Les Ferdinand is his cousin. On 15 March 2008, it was reported that Rio's half brother Jeremiah had been training with the United first team under the eye of Alex Ferguson. In 2006 in Manchester, Ferdinand's girlfriend Rebecca Ellison gave birth to their son Lorenz. Whilst Ferdinand was on holiday with friends and family in Las Vegas in July 2007, he proposed to Ellison and she accepted. The couple had their second child, a boy named Tate, in August 2008. The names of their children stem from the name of one of the couple's favourite actors, Larenz Tate.

Ferdinand: Aku Pecundang yang Buruk

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Kalah dan menang itu soal wajar dalam sepak bola. Namun, bagi bek Manchester United, Rio Ferdinand, kalah berarti sebuah bencana. Orangtuanya pun menjadi korban kekesalannya saat menelan kekalahan.

Dalam sebuah wawancara dengan majalah Zoo, pemain yang sering menjadi kapten MU itu mengakui bahwa ia tidak bisa menyaksikan dirinya kalah dalam hal apa pun. Jika kalah, hal yang seharusnya tak dilakukan oleh seorang olahragawan sejati pun bisa saja terjadi.

"Aku benci kalah. Ketika aku kalah, orangtuaku tak dapat menemuiku selama berhari-hari. Aku tidak mau bicara kepada mereka," ungkap Ferdinand kepada majalah Zoo.
"Mereka mengirim SMS kepadaku dan bilang mereka tahu aku gelisah tapi hanya ingin bilang halo. Aku tidak akan membalasnya, aku (bersikap) buruk saat kalah. Tanya petugas di lapangan atau orang lain," tambah pemain yang pernah dihukum FA karena mencederai petugas lapangan di Stamford Bridge itu.

Kebiasaan itu ternyata juga terjadi ketika ia tidak berstatus sebagai pemain. Saat menonton pertandingan atau melihat jagoannya kalah, ia bisa juga bersikap emosional. Sialnya, ia tidak bisa mengubah kebiasaannya itu.

"Jika aku berjalan dari tempat latihan dan aku kalah, aku tahu orang akan melihatku dan mengira, 'Ya, dia kalah hari ini'. Aku tidak bisa mengubahnya," sambungnya.

Untungnya Rio tak selalu mengumbar emosinya itu. Kadang kala, ia juga bisa mengeremnya, seperti ketika timnya lawan Wigan, menjelang akhir musim lalu. Ferdinand yang tak bermain dalam laga tersebut merasa panas mendengar suporter Wigan memperolok MU saat mereka tertinggal oleh gol Hugo Rodallega di menit 28. Ketika MU berbalik unggul lewat gol Carlos Tevez dan Michael Carrick, Ferdinand memilih pulang dan menghindari aksi berlebihan di hadapan pendukung tuan rumah.

Meski demikian, tetap saja ia tak mau menutupi bahwa dirinya memang payah saat menelan kekalahan. "Aku penonton yang buruk, pecundang yang buruk... sangat buruk," pungkasnya.
