Who are Manchester United’s*principal rivals, Liverpool or Manchester City?

It’s a simple question that has*delivered a complicated response ahead of Sunday’s*match with the Merseysiders, a fixture that is historically the biggest of the season but is no longer considered as relevant or impactful as those with Roberto Mancini’s title rivals.

This subject has been queried since September 2008 when the Blues were plucked from obscurity by Sheikh Mansour and the Abu Dhabi Group, whose estimated £20billion fortune transformed the club from self-deprecating outsiders to genuine trophy contenders overnight.

City's stock has risen since. A 2011 FA Cup triumph*famously brought down*a Stretford End banner counting their years without a trophy, before last season's dramatic title win ended a 44-year wait for a first division crown -*a feat no Reds supporter needs reminding of.

Additional factors have also fuelled the fire*of this burgeoning battle,*not least City's signing of former United striker Carlos Tevez and the*now infamous*‘Welcome to Manchester’ poster, as well as*several incendiary encounters.*

As a result, the Manchester derby is now more a grand occasion of state than a football match, an event of national standing. It has its own space in the calendar, its own lexicon and a particularly tight stranglehold on the news agenda. Victory, quite simply, offers more than just three points and*local bragging rights.

It is likely that*United’s April 2013 date with City will be the biggest and most hyped match of this season, and quite rightly so, given that the Barclays Premier League title is again being keenly contested by two clubs that are separated by just under four miles. But taking away all emotion and desire for short-term supremacy; is that fixture bigger than those contested with historic rivals Liverpool, a club which has throughout recent history battled United for the title of pound-for-pound champion in English football? It’s a good question.

The competition between the Reds of Manchester and Liverpool has become almost unique in its intensity since the Premier League's balance of power shifted along the East Lancs Road in the early 1990s, as Sir Alex Ferguson set about his agenda of returning*the club*to the standards set by Sir Matt Busby and his fabled Babes.

Such is the determination for domestic dominance, the true glory of United’s 2010/11 title triumph -*a record 19th -*was widely recognised for its impact on the local hierarchy. The facts are simple; the Manchester Reds are now officially the most successful club in England.

Famously, tensions between the cities*originate from industrial matters*stemming back to the building of the Manchester ship canal in the 1880s, which bypassed the port of Liverpool and led to job losses on Merseyside – a*decision that is still bemoaned on the Mersey Ferry tour.

“The thing about us and Liverpool is the rivalry - they are the most fantastic games,”*Sir Alex*said last term. “They're unparalleled in British history in terms of the success of both clubs and that's why we need each other. The way industry changed when they opened the ship canal is all to do with it.”

The rivalry*between clubs, however respectful, is*also demonstrated by the fact that no player has transferred directly between them since Phil Chisnall left United for Liverpool in 1964. Gabriel Heinze tried to follow the same route in 2007 but was instead sold to Real Madrid.

Of course, matters on the pitch have diluted the*relevance of this historic North West derby*in recent years, given that Liverpool have not won the championship since 1990 and realistically look some way off doing so, which has led some to point to City as a more prominent and worthy adversary.

Intriguingly, Salford-born Paul Scholes, a player whose down-to-earth manner is celebrated on the terraces, remains unsure which of*our competitors warrants the title*of 'biggest rivals' when quizzed on the matter in January's edition of Inside United.

“Whether City have overtaken Liverpool now, I don’t know… it’ll probably take years for*them to create what Liverpool have done," said Scholes. "Liverpool historically are our biggest rivals, they’re always the biggest games and the best atmospheres. But I’m sure City will run them close.”

The answer, in*my opinion at*least, lies in context. With a short-term viewpoint, City are unquestionably United's principal opponents. But in terms of trophy wins, emotion and*one-upmanship, there is arguably no greater opponent than Liverpool.

Kalo menurutku pribadi, Rival sejati United "masih" Liverpool. Meskipun akhir2 ini Liverpool terpuruk, tp melihat dr sejarahnya kedua tim ini memang sudah menjadi rival dlm perburuan gelar apalagi ketika menjelang laga kedua tim, akan gampang dan banyak ditemui psywar yg sangat panas. Setelah rekor juara liga Inggris terlampaui oleh United, mereka masih bisa bangga dgn Rekor di Eropa yg memang masih diatas United. Dari segi transfer pemain, bisa dibilang "haram" jika ada pemain yg menyebrang baik dr United ke Liverpool maupun sebaliknya. Terakhir terjadi aja (kalo gk salah) 45 tahun yg lalu ya..? Jadi menurutku Liverpool tetap Rival United, (mungkin) sampai rekor Liverpool dipecahkan United dan tdk ada lg yg bisa dibanggakan para liverpludian.
Dan untuk City, sebaiknya mereka kejar dulu tuh rekor Liverpool, barulah mereka bisa dibilang Rival sejati United

Kalo dirunut lebih jauh kebelakang, sebenernya ada satu lagi rival United yg principal banget, yap yap ..... Leeds United, hanya saja sekarang ini perbedaan kasta menyelimurkan rivalitas tersebut ....
Tinggal another Red ama tetangga sebelah itu sih yg tersisa yg bisa dibilang arc rival ....
Buat gw sih, tetep Lioverpool sbg seteru abadi United ......

ya kalau di tilik dari sejarah dan dari segi prestasi, pastilah Liverpool rival sejati United.

Aura nya klo bertemu liverpool tuh beda. Mgkn karena faktor dukungan para fans nya juga yang membuat laga kedua tim merah ini selalu bikin panas.

Mudah2an United bisa menyamai atau bahkan melebihi pencapaian liverpool di ajang eropa. Jadi bisa diam tuh semua pendukung Pool.

Kalau dari pendapat pribadi dan harus pilih salah satu, tentu pilihannya jatuh ke Liverpool, bicara rivalitas dgn Liverpool ini lebih ke arah prestasi mungkin ya, sejauh ini mereka ngaku2 lebih baik prestasinya di Eropa dari pada United karena unggul jumlah thropy UCL,tp sebaliknya United saat ini unggul di EPL, di sisi pertandingan dan fans, kalau bertemu memang auranya beda nih, gimanapun terpuruknya Liverpool, United selalu kesulitan kalau menghadapi mereka

Rivalitas dengan Man City mungkin karena derby sekota aja yah, apalagi akhir2 ini mereka jadi kekuatan baru dengan bintangnya, tapi tetap aja Manchester gak jadi biru, kalau bicara prestasi dengan City, gak perlu diperpanjang lah masih unggul jauh

kalau berbicara rivalalitas dalam perebutan gelar liga jelas lawan utama adalah liverpool, dengan perolehan Manchester United:19xjuara, 14xrunner up
Liverpool:18xjuara,12xrennur up diikuti arsenal dengan 13xjuara dan 8xrunner up. Dari kedua pesaing tersebut hanya liverpool lah yang membuat united sedikit harus tancap gas, karena liverpool tidak hanya menyerang dengan taktik dan strategi dilapangan bahkan menyerang lewat supporternya dan aksi rasisme(kasus suarez).
