24. DARREN FLETCHER

Birthdate: 01 Feb 1984
Birthplace: Edinburgh, Scotland
Position: Midfielder
Appearances: 214
Goals: 13
Joined United: 03 Jul 2000
United Debut: 12 Mar 2003 v FC Basel (H)
International: Scotland

Darren Fletcher is a player for the big occasion. While other men might shirk from the responsibility presented to them in the heat of battle, the Scot thrives in such encounters.

This attitude was never more visibly displayed than in the 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal [in February 2008] in which he headed two goals. He set the standard for the team with his indefatigable running, hassling, closing down and tackling which denied the Gunners time and space to play their usual passing game.

“I enjoy the added pressure of the big games," admitted the midfielder, who scooped his second title medal in May 2008 and was an unused substitute in the Champions League final in Moscow. "The atmosphere’s always special and the crowd spur you on.”

In terms of recognition for his exertions and qualities, Fletcher's United career has been a slow burner. It is only with age, and with an ever-growing list of outstanding performances, that he has received due credit.

His United career almost got off to fairytale start when in May 2000, Fletcher was set to be included in the squad for the league trip to Villa Park, but FA rules – and his schoolboy status – denied him the chance.

He joined United officially as a trainee in July 2000, but injuries stymied his progress. He eventually made his debut against Basel in March 2003, but it was in the following season that Fletch made his mark, notching 35 appearances. By this stage, he was established as one of Scotland’s leading lights: he scored the solitary goal against Lithuania that earned a play-off for Euro 2004 and, later that season, aged 20, became Scotland’s youngest captain for 118 years.

The 2004/05 campaign brought Fletcher’s first goal for United, in a 2-0 win at Boro on New Year’s Day. His most famous strike to date was against Chelsea in November 2005 when he headed the goal that ended the champions’ 40-game unbeaten run. Subsequent seasons saw him used intermittently, but the trend of selecting him for the biggest, most important games indicated the high regard in which Sir Alex Ferguson holds his countryman.

That faith was displayed when, in October 2008. Darren signed a four-year contract extension. He admitted that just a few months earlier he had contemplated life away from Old Trafford, only for Sir Alex to field him regularly in the early stages of the 2008/09 season.

Fletcher struck up an energetic, dominant midfield partnership with Michael Carrick and began finding the net on a more regular basis, validating the judgement of his manager and finally yielding recognition from peers and supporters alike.

Heartbeakingly, Fletch's finest season with the Reds wasn't allowed a fitting finish. The Scot was harshly sent off in United's Champions League semi-final victory at Arsenal, which left him suspended for the final against Barcelona. That the Reds so clearly missed Darren's energy and drive in Rome spoke volumes for the midfielder's sky-rocketing importance to the cause.

When he grows up,
Oh you know he's gonna be,
He's gonna be the only Scotsman in our team,
Now he's grown up,
And he's realised his dream,
He's gonna play alongside Giggsy, Scholes and Keane.

Oh he would run 500 miles,
And he would run 500 more,
Just to be that man who might just score,
To be that man Darren Fletcher....

Darren Fletcher..... Darren Fletcher

12/08/2009 09:18 - ManUtd.com, Ben Hibbs
Why is Fletcher still underrated?

Why don't opposition fans rate Darren Fletcher? It's a point that irks ManUtd.com's Ben Hibbs...

I had an argument recently with a Liverpool fan about Darren Fletcher. “He’s not a top, top player is he?” he said. “He’s OK, but he’s not as good as Mascherano.” I’m a big fan of Fletcher and that was all it took to set me off.

Even in the days when some United fans would grumble at the slightest error, I preached patience. The first time I saw him play was in 2002, I went to watch United’s Reserves for the first time against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford. This lanky, skinny kid in the middle of the park was absolutely everywhere, spraying passes all over the pitch like a seasoned pro stepped down to the lower levels. It all looked so easy. You could tell then he was a class above the rest.

Upon his integration into the first-team, however, Fletch suffered because, as a young, lightweight lad, he had to earn his stripes out on the wing. He was labelled by many in the media as the new Beckham, well wide of the mark and frankly a lazy cop-out description of his talents. Then, when he moved infield, there was the void left by Roy Keane (even before Keane left he was no longer the all-action, box-to-box maniac he was in his prime). It was a tough education. But Fletch took it – and the negative comments he often received – on the chin.

Fortunately, Sir Alex is a good judge of character and talent. In the last few years he’s honed his game, bulked up in the gym – which he admitted he always found difficult to do as a young player because he just didn’t see the results of his hard work – and he’s now approaching the peak of his career. But while United fans are, in the vast majority, converts to what Fletcher brings to the team – technical quality, clever use of the ball, energy, a calm head and, lately, a great deal of maturity – fans of other clubs seem preoccupied with out-dated judgements.

Fletcher was one of United’s best players at times last season, and I honestly believe that had he not suffered one or two injuries he wouldn’t have been far off in the running for Player of the Year. In the depths if disappointment after Rome, Sir Alex admitted Fletcher was a major loss due to suspension. Would he have halted Iniesta and Xavi? We'll never know, and Barcelona might well counter that their own absent men would have raised the level of their performance.

The point is, it’s recognition of how important Sir Alex believes his fellow Scot is to his team. And as everyone looks down the squad list for the men who’ll step to the fore in the ‘life after Ronaldo’ era, Fletcher is one that has to, and I believe will, rise to the challenge.

He’s Scotland’s captain, a deserved title for the influence he wields in national colours, where he’s always been one of the big fish, even from a very early age. Now I think his time has come at United. He was outstanding in the first half against Chelsea at Wembley, and whereas we’re expecting the likes of Nani, Anderson and Berbatov to an extent to raise their game, Fletcher need only avoid injuries and continue the excellent work he did last season.

We could have lost Fletch last summer when a number of clubs, Everton included, expressed an interest after a season in which he enjoyed only limited involvement in United's double success. Thankfully, he stayed and signed a new contract. Although, at either club, he’d have proved that deluded Liverpool fan wrong.

Tireless Fletcher 'outstanding'
29/08/2009 18:47, Report by Ben Hibbs

Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson praised Darren Fletcher’s inspirational display during United’s enthralling 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Scottish midfielder covered every blade of grass, blocked passes and shots with just about every part of his anatomy and was at the foundation of most of United’s moves attacking moves.

Fletcher’s performances this season, and last, point to a maturing player reaching his footballing peak. Still underrated by some outside Old Trafford, United fans know the Scot’s value and regularly showed their appreciation at his every lung-bursting run.

Surprisingly, Sky gave the Man of the Match award to Rooney, who Sir Alex thinks will gladly hand over the bottle of champagne.

“I think Wayne will give it to him!” the manager said with a smile. “Darren was the outstanding performer on the field. He really was outstanding. He always does well on these big occasions because he’s a big-game player.”

Rooney added: “I’ve said many times, forwards score goals and tend to get the man of the match award,” said Wayne. “But Fletch was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch.”

Why Darren Fletcher is no longer Manchester United's ugly duckling

By David McDonnell | mirrorfootball.co.uk

Darren Fletcher has been one of the most underrated players in the Premier League for the past couple of seasons. Not any more.

No-one can dispute his right to be regarded as a player of real stature after his towering display against Arsenal in Manchester United's hard-fought 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Fletcher has emerged as arguably Sir Alex Ferguson's most influential midfielder, with five of United's last six defeats coming when he has not played any part.

It's perhaps no coincidence Fletcher was missing when United were humbled 1-0 at Burnley a fortnight ago. With Fletcher starting this season, United have a 100 per cent record.

Fletcher was one of the young United players lambasted by former skipper Roy Keane in his infamous MUTV rant of four years ago, which was deemed too savage to broadcast.

But at Old Trafford on Saturday, Fletcher was the closest thing to Keane that United fans have seen since their legendary ex-skipper's acrimonious departure from the club.

Belligerent, committed and seemingly everywhere, Fletcher played the role of midfield spoiler to perfection, as well as earning the free-kick from which United's winning goal game.

In the long-term absence of United's midfield destroyer Owen Hargreaves, whose career remains in the balance after surgery on both knees, Fletcher has stepped up to fill the void.

Much was made of Fletcher's suspension from the Champions League final against Barcelona, and whether his presence in Rome would have made any difference to the outcome.

Probably not, such was the brilliance of Barca trio Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta in imposing themselves on the occasion, while United's midfield wilted by comparison.

But as he showed against Arsenal, Fletcher is an uncompromising opponent, one with the ability to throw opponents off their stride by never allowing them to settle.

How United could have done with someone with that kind of attitude in Rome last May, when their midfield rolled over like an obliging puppy and allowed Barca's players to wreak havoc.

Fletcher is not the finished article, of course. He has only scored 13 goals in six seasons at United, which is an area of his game he himself would admit needs to improve.

But at 25, Fletcher is starting to fulfil his rich potential and deserves recognition for what he brings to United's cause, which more than can be said for some members of Fergie's squad.

United midfielder Anderson, who had a bust-up with Fergie over his omission from the Community Shield squad, should watch a re-run of Fletcher's display against Arsenal.

Anderson's attitude, it is understood, has been questionable this season, which would explain his continued omission by Fergie.

But if Anderson is serious about making it at United, he need look no further than Fletcher as an example of a young player who has put in the graft and is now reaping the rewards.
