Butt gets his managerial career off to a winning start with Man Utd's youngsters

Nicky Butt got his managerial career off to a winning start on Thursday night as a Manchester United XI beat Waterford United 2-1 in Ireland.
The retired midfielder has been working closely with the under 21s but this was the first time he has taken sole charge of the team.
Strikes from James Wilson and Jack Barmby secured the win in front of a 2,830 crowd after Butt's side were pinned back by a rocket strike from Conor Whittle.

Butt has been overseeing United's younger players after the trainees were split into two groups to allow players as much game time as possible.
While United's first team are on tour in Australia, a developmental team will travel to Ross County on Saturday.
Regular under 21s coach Warren Joyce stayed in England to work with the older reserves and first-team players returning to fitness.

Butt: A proud moment for us

Nicky Butt is proud to be involved with Ryan Giggs, United's temporary manager, and fellow former team-mates Paul Scholes and Phil Neville in helping to guide the Reds to the end of the season.

Giggs has taken temporary charge of first team matters following the departure of David Moyes and has called on the experience and expertise of Butt, Scholes and Neville to assist him, starting with Saturday's match against Norwich at Old Trafford.

"It will be massive for us, a proud moment for us all," Butt told MUTV in an exclusive interview. "To be there together is a bit of a surreal thing. We walked in here together when we were 12 and to be here now – I'm not 40 yet but Giggsy is, and myself and Scholes are nearly there too. So for us and Phil to be there together is a very proud moment.

"We're here to try to help the club and get the results that we want from now until the end of the season. What happens after that, who knows?"

Butt is confident that all the players will be keen to see out the final four games of a frustrating 2013/14 campaign on a positive note.

"We've got some amazing players at this club, good lads who care about the club, who are really positive about United and want the best for the club. Saturday is a massive occasion, not only for Ryan, but for the staff, the fans and the players as well because they know that we've underachieved as a club this year.

"The players in that changing room know how good they are. They look round, look left and look right at the players next to them and know that they are very proud, hard-working lads. I'm sure we'll see that on Saturday."

EXCLUSIVE: Nicky Butt will be a part of Louis van Gaal's Manchester United set-up

* Butt will continue in his role with the United academy
* Louis van Gaal to take over at the club after the World Cup
* Butt worked at United academy under David Moyes, and assisted Ryan Giggs in his role as interim manager at the end of last season
* Still doubts about roles for Phil Neville and Paul Scholes

Manchester United believe that Nicky Butt will remain with the club as the Louis van Gaal era dawns at Old Trafford.

One of the graduates of the Class of 1992, Butt is contracted with the club and works alongside Warren Joyce with the under-21 team and manages the under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League.

It is believed that he is set to continue in that position next season.
Sportsmail understands that Butt has made no indication to the club that he would be unwilling to continue in his role with a highly-placed source saying: ‘The Class of 92 are very important to Manchester United.

Part of the set-up: Butt assisted Ryan Giggs at the end of last season when the Welshman was interim manager

'Nicky is a member of staff at the club, he has a position here and he is working with Warren Joyce, who will remain at the club.’

Butt was promoted to the first-team fold following the sacking of David Moyes in April as he assisted close friend Ryan Giggs after the Welshman assumed managerial responsibilities at Old Trafford.

Once van Gaal was handed the job, there were suspicions that the Dutchman may look to weed out the influence of the Class of ‘92 to make way for his own backroom staff but with Giggs on board as assistant, the new manager has indicated his desire to maintain a link with United’s heritage.

However, the future of Phil Neville, who followed David Moyes from Everton to Manchester United last summer in the position of first-team coach, remains clouded in mystery.

It is understood that discussions are continuing at United over whether Neville be remain at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal but it would seem unlikely that he will maintain such a senior position at the club next season.

A United insider was keen to stress that the ‘Class of 92’ are ‘part of the fabric of the football club’ but Neville, who is currently working as a BBC pundit at the World Cup, is still to be informed what role, if any at all, that the club can find for him following the exit of Moyes.

Neville may exit as the club look to make a break with the dismal campaign endured by Moyes, with van Gaal having already brought in Marcel Bout as his assistant coach, although it could yet be that United find a reduced role for the former England international.

As for Paul Scholes, United had no plans in place to reintroduce the club legend to the coaching staff while Moyes was in charge and as things stand, it seems unlikely that he will form a part of van Gaal’s backroom team.

Scholes acted as a temporary assistant manager when Giggs took over for the final four games of the season.

He also teamed up with Butt to help his former team-mate coach the United youngsters for the UEFA Youth League in the autumn but Sportsmail understands that this arrangement was on a purely voluntary, non-contracted basis.

It was orchestrated by Butt, rather than Moyes, and it remained a temporary role. It is distinctly possible that he will aid Butt on the same, ad-hoc basis next season.

Scholes does, however, remain a paid ambassador for Manchester United but he has not been contracted on a permanent basis as a member of the coaching staff since retiring in the summer of 2013.

His chances of earning a senior position under van Gaal have also been dented by his outspoken views in his column for the bookmakers Paddy Power, with the 39-year-old particularly critical of United striker Wayne Rooney and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, with Scholes saying that the United chief has ‘an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job’ in this summer transfer window.

Ander Herrera will be a star at Manchester United... but he's not at the same level as Toni Kroos or Paul Pogba, says Nicky Butt

* Ander Herrera is not at same level as Toni Kroos or Paul Pogba says former Manchester United player Nicky Butt
* Spanish midfielder became Louis van Gaal's first signing after joiing from Athletic Bilbao for £28.4m
* German international Kross is close to completing a move to Real Madrid
* Former United youth graduate Pogba has been valued at £60m by Juventus

Nicky Butt has backed Ander Herrera to become a success at Manchester United, but admits the Spanish midfielder is not yet at the same level as the likes of Toni Kroos or Paul Pogba.

The 24-year-old became new manager Louis van Gaal's first signing after joining from Athletic Bilbao for a fee of £28.4 million this summer.

Meanwhile, former United target Kroos is on the verge of completing a move to Real Madrid while former youth team graduate Pogba has been quoted at £60 million to leave Juventus.

Spanish fly guy: Ander Herrera became Louis van Gaal's first signing in a £28.4m deal

Butt, now on the coaching staff at Old Trafford, admits that Herrera needs time to reach the same standard as his more unattainable counterparts.

'He [Herrera] was at the level where you just had to take note of this player because there are not many top midfielders you can get," Butt told the Manchester Evening News of the player he spent time scouting last season.

'You can all talk about Pogba or Kroos but these kind of players are not easy to get. So you have to widen your net and Herrera is a bonus.

'He is at a level where he can play at a club like United and given a bit of time he can excel.

I watched Ander a few times last season on scouting trips. He impressed me. He can become a star player for us. He can become a big influence on our midfield [but] you will have to be patient with him.'

Kroos was mooted as a potential target during David Moyes ill-fated reign before it became clear he was moving to the Bernebeu - while United will rue letting Pogba leave the club in search of first-team football.

Nicky Butt returns to coaching role with Manchester United's Under 21 side after assisting first team

* Nicky Butt will team up with reserve team coach Warren Joyce once again
* Butt helped Ryan Giggs coach the first team before Louis van Gaal's arrival
* Phil Neville and Paul Scholes have not travelled to America

Nicky Butt has returned to his role with Manchester United's Under 21 side following a spell assisting the first-team in the absence of manager Louis van Gaal.
Sportsmail understands Butt will be back alongside reserve team manager Warren Joyce for a friendly at Southport on Tuesday evening and it is believed that he will continue in this role for the coming season.

Original role: Nicky Butt (right) will return to his position alongside Warren Joyce

Good relationship: Manchester United coaches Joyce and Butt have enjoyed working together

He had been coaching the first team with assistant manager Ryan Giggs, and the new Dutch duo Marcel Bout and Albert Stuivenberg while Louis van Gaal was away with Holland at the World Cup.
Butt did not travel on the club's pre-season tour of the USA and as Sportsmail revealed in June, the intention has always been for him to return to the reserve side where he has forged a productive relationship with Joyce.
Paul Scholes and Phil Neville have also not joined United's inner circle of coaching staff in the USA and although Van Gaal last week insisted roles would be found for the duo at the club, a decision is yet to be reached.
On Tuesday evening, the pair were at Salford City's pre-season friendly against Stalybridge.

Nicky Butt expects Manchester United to be challenging for the Premier League title

* Man Utd coach says there is an air of optimism around Old Trafford
* He says Louis van Gaal has an aura about him like Sir Alex Ferguson did
* Man Utd have won all five of their pre-season friendlies

Nicky Butt expects Manchester United to be challenging for the Barclays Premier League title this season.

The sense of optimism around United is growing as the 2014/15 top-flight campaign draws ever nearer, with new manager Louis van Gaal having come in and so far seen his team emerge victorious from all five of their pre-season friendlies.

The Red Devils are looking to bounce back after the debacle of 2013/14, when they struggled under David Moyes and finished seventh in the table - a year on from being crowned champions in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge.

Excited for the new season: Nicky Butt is a huge fan of the club and expects them to be challenging

And Butt, the former United midfielder who was part of the coaching staff last term and is again this season, is in optimistic mood ahead of the club’s Premier League opener against Swansea at Old Trafford a week on Saturday.

The 39-year-old said: 'The new manager is in charge now, we are on an unbeaten run and now we are looking to make a good start to the season with the first five games we have got (Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR and Leicester).

'Everyone expects Manchester United to contend for the title.

'We finished as low as we have done last season, but when the season starts again, everyone will expect. I am a fan, and I will expect us to be challenging again.'

Butt, a United player from 1992 to 2004, knows the strong desire within the club to respond after disappointing periods and has no doubt there will be that kind of feeling in the dressing room at the moment.

'It (that desire) is immense,' Butt said.

'In days gone by it has sometimes been when Man United are at their strongest - when they have had setbacks.

'We were always told in no uncertain terms that you had to step up to the plate, otherwise you were not going to be at the club for very much longer.

'I’m sure the new man in charge will say the same thing to the players. Hopefully the players will react, and I’m sure they will.'

Butt worked with United’s youth set-up last term and asked about his current role under Van Gaal he said: 'It is a bit of a wider remit now - I’m looking over all age groups. But that needs to be finalised in the next few weeks.'

Then asked for his impressions so far of the Dutchman, Butt said: 'Positive. He is obviously a very in-control man.

'He has an aura about him - when he walks in the building, you know who the boss is, and I think that is very important.

'We had that with Sir Alex for all those years and I think we have that now with Van Gaal. He walks into the building and he commands your respect.

'All the players look up to him as the leader and that is how it should be. From afar, when I’ve looked at him it looks like he takes no messing about and if anyone doesn’t toe the line, I’m sure they will be out of the team.'

Butt was speaking at the AJ Bell Stadium, where he, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Gary and Phil Neville rolled back the years as they lined up together in a ‘Class of 92 and friends’ XI for a friendly against Salford City, the non-league outfit they bought between them this year.

The quintet went on to enjoy trophy-laden careers with United after all graduating from the club’s academy in the early 1990s - something Butt thinks is unlikely to be replicated.

'It is possible - there are a lot of great young players out there,' the ex-England international said.

'But we just need to give them a chance. We had a manager in charge and a club that believed in that, but it is harder now with the immediacy of it all. Everyone wants things instantly.

'Owners that come in don’t necessarily know a lot about football - they just know a lot about business, unfortunately. But that’s the way football is. People don’t have the foresight to wait and see.

'To be fair, managers come in now and why should they go four or five nights a week looking at academies when nine times out of 10 they are not going to be there to see the rewards?

'I think good lads, top players, will still come through. But whether you will get five or six through together is something I doubt.

'We played together since we were 12, 13. To prepare lads to come through takes a lot of patience and a good owner to say to a manager ‘we are going to give you time and stand by you’.

'Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it doesn’t happen now.'

Sir Alex Ferguson pulled me out of England squads, admits ex-Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt

* Nicky Butt says Sir Alex Ferguson told him he couldn't join up with England during their time together at Manchester United
* Butt represented his country on 39 occasions between 1997 and 2004
* However he could've won more caps for his country if he hadn't been removed from squads by Ferguson
* The 39-year-old admits that some players resented David Beckham's fame
* Butt wants England to just play young players in order for them to gel together and win a major tournament

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has admitted that Sir Alex Ferguson made him withdraw from the England squad during his time at Old Trafford.

Butt represented his country 39 times between 1997 and 2004 and was picked in the Three Lions squad for the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004.

But in a question and answer session alongside ex-Red Devils team-mates Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs at Soccerex, the 39-year-old revealed that he could have won more caps for England.

Controversy: Nicky Butt (centre) has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson pulled him out of England squads

Lion heart: Butt, pictured in action against Portugal in 2002, earned 39 caps for his country over seven years

Explaining what Ferguson had told him, Butt said: 'You've got an England game coming up. You're not going.'

Butt's revelation reignites the debate over whether Premier League bosses show enough respect to the national side and follows QPR manager Harry Redknapp claiming that players asked him to be pulled out of squads during his time in charge of Tottenham.

Former Newcastle and Birmingham man Butt was also questioned on the attitudes of players in the England squad towards David Beckham's fame. 'Maybe a few people resented that,' he replied.

Wise words: Butt, pictured with Ferguson in his United days, joked that he's still scared of his old boss

Clearly feeling in an outspoken mood, Butt even disagreed with his friend Neville when the ex-Everton skipper claimed that recent Three Lions squads were good enough to win a major tournament.

After Neville said that he thought 'England should be winning major tournaments', Butt quickly jumped in to add 'I don't'.

As well as reminiscing about his own career in the white of England, Butt also had his say on the current national set-up by stating that Roy Hodgson should exclusively play young players in order for them to mature together in the hope of winning silverware.

Manchester United legend Nicky Butt set to land academy lead role at Old Trafford

* Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt could take permanent charge of the academy teams at Old Trafford
* Former youth chief Brian McClair's departure has opened up the role
* The 40-year-old has been working at the academy in recent weeks
* Butt will report to United boss Louis van Gaal if he lands the position

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt is among the front-runners to take permanent charge of the club's academy teams.

United are restructuring their academy system in the wake of the departure of former youth chief Brian McClair.

And Butt - a member of the acclaimed Class of '92 - is in the shake up to be named Academy Head Coach, a new position that would see him report directly to first-team manager Louis van Gaal.

Nicky Butt is in line to be offered permanent control of Manchester United's academy sides

Butt is one of the lead runners to fill the void left from former academy chief Brian McClair

The recruitment process is being led by club secretary John Alexander and John Murtough, the former head of elite performance at the Premier League who was brought to the club by previous manager David Moyes.

United have been slightly concerned by the relatively lack of players progressing from the youth system to the first team over the last few years.

This has led to a comprehensive review of how the academy works and is why McClair's old role is essentially being split in to two, with an academy head coach working alongside a more operational figure.

Butt, 40, has been working at the academy in recent weeks. Previously he was assistant the Warren Joyce, United's Under 21 manager.

Butt Segera Jadi Anak Buah Van Gaal di MU?

Bola.net - Mantan gelandang Manchester United, Nicky Butt, dikabarkan bakal segera menjadi kepala akademi sepakbola klub.

Manchester United want Nicky Butt to sign a new deal as part of academy restructuring

* Nicky Butt is the current boss of Manchester United's academy
* Former United star Butt is yet to sign a new deal as head of their academy
* Extensive changes are set to be made to the Red Devils' academy set-up

Manchester United want to kick off the overhaul of their youth system by tying academy boss Nicky Butt to a new contract.

United chief executive Ed Woodward travelled back to Manchester on the team bus following Sunday’s win at Liverpool, and spent Monday at the club’s Carrington training base.

The root-and-branch review of United’s academy is understood to have been one of the issues on the agenda, with Butt yet to sign his contract as head of the new set-up.

Manchester United want Nicky Butt to sign a new deal as head of their academy set-up

Every position beneath the former England midfielder is under consideration as United try to make up ground on rivals Manchester City and their highly regarded youth system.

United are keen to bridge the gap between the academy and the first team to ensure a steady flow of youngsters into the senior ranks.

They have looked at recruiting from Holland to tie in more closely with Louis van Gaal and his Dutch back-room team, while Michael Appleton is understood to be one of the names under consideration for a new role with the Under 21s.

However, Appleton, who came through the youth system at Old Trafford and made two first-team appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, is currently in talks over a new long-term contract at Oxford United after leading the League Two club into the promotion places and the fourth round of the FA Cup.

There is also uncertainty over the future of Derek Langley as head of youth player recruitment.

Langley held talks with John Alexander, United’s club secretary who has been helping Butt run the academy, on Friday after it was reported that he will leave at the end of the season.

United still believe Langley will stay but he is understood to be frustrated at the lack of progress within the academy.

A recent example has been United’s failure to sign Holland Under 16 captain Juan Familia Castillo, with the Ajax midfielder to join Chelsea instead.
