A summer of upheaval beckons at Old Trafford now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken the reins on a permanent basis at Manchester United.

There are a number of players whose contracts are expiring and question marks over other stars in the squad. Solskjaer also has Callum Hudson-Odoi, Jadon Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his shortlist, but space must be made for any potential arrival.

So who will still be at Old Trafford at the start of next season? Sportsmail assesses the United squad.

GOALKEEPERS

David de Gea - A cornerstone of the United squad and the one player they truly cannot afford to lose. Contract talks are taking longer than some might have expected but a resolution will likely be found before long. Verdict: STAY

Sergio Romero - As good a No 2 as any in the Premier League. Whether he wants to go for first-team football somewhere else is up to him but United will be happy to keep him on their books. Verdict: STAY

DEFENCE

Victor Lindelof - A difficult start to life at Old Trafford last season but has definitely matured this time around and is offering more to the team. Verdict: STAY

Eric Bailly - The opposite to Lindelof. Seems to have lost his way at United and has been substituted twice in the first half of games this season. With his deal expiring in 2020, it would make sense for United to cash in now. Verdict: GO

Phil Jones - Signed a new contract in February until 2023, so will be going nowhere. Verdict: STAY

Chris Smalling - Like Jones, penned an extension himself in December that lasts until 2022. Verdict: STAY

Matteo Darmian - Has only played six times this season and only two of those have been under Solskjaer. The writing is on the wall. Verdict: GO

Diogo Dalot - Has produced some promising displays at right back but speculation of a move for Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace suggests it might not be enough for Gunner Solskjaer. Verdict: JURY'S OUT

Luke Shaw - Looked destined to leave a year ago but with hard work, focus and resilience he is now a key player under Solskjaer. Verdict: STAY

MIDFIELD

Paul Pogba - Has gone from strength to strength since Solskjaer broke the chains over his position in the starting line-up but that hasn't stopped him talking up a move to Real Madrid now Zinedine Zidane is manager.

Solskjaer could have work to do if Real reciprocate the interest, especially if they fail to finish in the top four or win the Champions League. VERDICT: Jury's Out

Juan Mata - It seems his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end. Links to Hudson-Odoi and Sancho suggest that Solskjaer is looking for someone with more pace than Mata, who will be 31 when the window opens, can offer. VERDICT: GO

Nemanja Matic - Like De Gea, a year remains on his contract but United would be wise to sort an extension soon. He is much more replaceable than De Gea is but his experience makes him an important part of the United squad. VERDICT: STAY

Fred - Is yet to light up the sky in United colours since arriving for £52m but they are unlikely to write off such an investment just yet. The Brazil international should have more time to prove himself at Old Trafford. VERDICT: STAY

Ander Herrera - His contract expires at the end of this season and with United not willing to match his £200,000-a-week demands, a move to Paris Saint-Germain appears more and more likely. VERDICT: GO

Andreas Pereira - Only a year left on his contract but with Solskjaer looking to embed academy graduates in his squad, he could have a role to play next season. VERDICT: STAY

Scott McTominay - Perhaps there are long-term questions over whether the Scotland midfielder is up to United's standard but like Pereira, is one Solskaer's academy graduates who he will look to mold next season. VERDICT: STAY

ATTACK

Alexis Sanchez - His huge £500,000-a-week wages are prompting the likes of De Gea and Herrera to ask for big pay packets themselves. But Sanchez has failed to contribute in the way they have and a fresh start is best for all concerned. VERDICT: GO
