Default Re: Jadon Sancho

Rio Ferdinand believes it's 'a matter of time' before Jadon Sancho shows the form that convinced Man United to fork out £73m for him as he points out that old team-mates Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic didn't perform instantly

* Jadon Sancho has struggled to make an impact since joining Manchester United
* Winger has lost his place in the United side and was then dropped by England
* Rio Ferdinand said it is only natural the winger should need to acclimatise
* He highlighted experiences of Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic at the club

Rio Ferdinand is confident it is ‘a matter of time’ before Jadon Sancho shows the form that persuaded Manchester United to pay £73million for him.

Sancho has lost his place in the United side and was dropped last week by England manager Gareth Southgate.

Ferdinand, however, said it is only natural the winger should need to acclimatise to his new club and pointed to the examples of Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, his two former United club-mates who needed time to impress at Old Trafford.

The former United defender also insisted Sancho cannot allow the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to overwhelm his talent.

‘He can only look at that as a plus point,’ Ferdinand told Sportsmail. ‘He can’t look at someone like Ronaldo being in your dressing room, being able to work alongside him [as a negative].

‘He is, I reckon, the most decisive footballer we’ve ever seen. His natural habits around the training ground, copy his preparation. You have to be a sponge like that.

‘For Jadon, Marcus [Rashford] and Mason [Greenwood], those three attacking players, they should be especially soaking this up. Even these first 11 goals [from Ronaldo] which they’ve seen, that would be enough [to teach them].

Jadon Sancho has struggled to make an impact since joining Manchester United in the summer. Sancho has lost his place in the Manchester United side and was then dropped by England. Rio Ferdinand highlighted experiences of former team-mates Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic who excelled following slow starts at Old Trafford

‘There’s no doubting Jadon’s ability, no doubting his desire. That’s all there. But sometimes when you go to a football club you need all the other bits of the jigsaw to fit in. And at the moment they aren’t fitting in to their perfect places. I think that will come, I think that will be a matter of time.

‘Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic are the examples that he needs to lean on and be shown.

‘There are loads of players that came into United and didn’t [perform straight away]. Patrice and Nemanja are two great examples from my generation.’

Ferdinand was speaking in Peckham, where he grew up, while filming a new BT film which attempts to explain the seemingly exponential rise of south London footballers. The documentary, on which Ferdinand served as executive producer, includes interviews with Sancho (Camberwell), Tammy Abraham (Camberwell) and Joe Gomez (Lewisham).

South Of The River also features Michail Antonio (Earlsfield), Ademola Lookman (Peckham), Eberechi Eze (Greenwich), Ryan and Steven Sessegnon (Wandsworth). Film-makers might have spoken to Declan Rice (Kingston), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Lewisham), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Morden) and Emile Smith Rowe (Croydon), too.

Come the World Cup in Qatar next year, it is possible Sancho, Rice, Gomez, Abraham, Smith Rowe and Hudson-Odoi will all feature for the national team.

Sancho and Hudson-Odoi have already won the Under 17 World Cup together and Lookman won the Under 20 World Cup, so any future England success might have a distinct south London feel.

‘They have a culture growing up together, winning together and knowing how to win tournaments,’ said Ferdinand.

‘These guys have a great culture that they’ve built over years. They’ve done it in style as kids growing up and they’re trying to convert that now to the first team. They’ve got ever so close in the last two tournaments now and we hope they go one step further when they get there again.’

Default Re: Jadon Sancho

'It's got to do with a lot of the things up here in his head': Ralf Rangnick says Jadon Sancho is struggling to cope with the 'level of expectation' at Manchester United following his £73m move

* Interim manager Ralf Rangnick says he has spoken to the former Dortmund star
* Ralf Rangnick left Sancho on bench at Aston Villa in favour of Anthony Elanga
* Sancho's 23 games for United have produced just two goals and no assists
* Rangnick believes he has found it hard to come to terms with the pressure

Jadon Sancho is struggling under the pressure of his £73million move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund, claims interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick has spoken to Sancho after the England winger was left on the bench at Aston Villa last weekend in favour of teenager Anthony Elanga.

Sancho's 23 games for United have produced just two goals and no assists, and Rangnick believes he has found it hard to come to terms with the pressure and expectation of moving to Old Trafford last summer for such a big transfer fee.

'It's a different league and he is playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's also got to do with a lot of the things up here in his head,' said Rangnick, who confirmed United have switched permanently to a 4-3-3 formation that suits wingers more than the 4-2-2-2 he used after first taking over.

Rangnick left the England winger was left on the bench at Aston Villa last weekend in favour of teenager Anthony Elanga

'It's different if you come as an 18-year-old, unknown talented English boy to Borussia Dortmund. From then on, you can only improve. You can only make a success out of that.

'The level of expectation was a lot lower compared to situation where you come to a club like Manchester United for a high transfer fee with a high level of expectation.

'Everyone expected from him that he would be one of the best players in the team. This is psychologically and emotionally a more challenging situation than the one at Borussia Dortmund.

'These are exactly the kind of steps that he has to make to become a top player for the next 10 years at this club. We can give guidelines. We can give him a helping hand and show him we are trying to accompany him and give him all the necessary assistance that he needs, but in the end it's up to him to take the next steps.

'Whenever I see him train, he's one of the best players in the sessions. But it's not only about training at the highest possible level. I said that to him the day before yesterday: confirm the performances you show in training when you're playing on the pitch.

'With those kind of creative, offensive players it's all about confidence, being aware of how good they can be, then showing it in front of 75,000 – or 45,000 at Villa Park.

'He has the ability to do that, there is no doubt about that. But now we have to develop him into that kind of player and the same kind of performances that he has shown at Borussia Dortmund.'

'Jadon Sancho has arrived!': Manchester United fans heap praise on £73m man after providing two assists in 4-2 victory against Leeds following shaky start to life at Old Trafford

* Jadon Sancho provided two assists in Manchester United's win over Leeds
* The England international struggled to adapt when he first joined the Red Devils
* Sancho has started to come to form for United though in recent matches

Manchester United fans are lauding praise on Jadon Sancho following his performance in the 4-2 victory against Leeds.

In a chaotic game, Sancho kept a cool head and provided two assists to help his side take the three points.

Harry Maguire gave the Red Devils the lead before Sancho got his first assist of the night as his chipped cross was headed home by Bruno Fernandes.

Leeds scored two goals at the start of the half but it was Sancho who contributed again as United retook the lead after 70 minutes.

Sancho played a one-two with Fred with the Brazilian putting United back ahead before Anthony Elanga sealed the points.

The 21-year-old has struggled to hit the ground running since his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund.

However, with goals against Middlesbrough and Southampton, followed by his two assists against Leeds, United fans are confident Sancho is finally on the right path for success at Old Trafford.

United Muppetiers commented: 'Sancho looks worth every penny. Only took some common sense to see he would take a little time to get going, but this is who he is. MOTM and absolutely outstanding recently.'

Aidan Walsh posted: 'Jadon Sancho has arrived,' while Atwine Tayebwa commented: 'Jadon Sancho - very special player we've got on our hands.'

Another Twitter user hoped that Marcus Rashford will return to form like Sancho.

They commented: Soooooo happy that @Sanchooo10 is finding his feet in a United shirt. He just needs to give some of the water he's drinking to Rashford. Need to get Rashford of the past 2 or 3 seasons back.'

Miles Hackett posted: 'Jadon Sancho has really turned a corner over the last 5 games, nice to see he's starting to find his confidence after a slow start.'

Fan account UtdPlug added: 'Starting to feel like Jadon Sancho is in the right hands with Ralf Rangnick!'

Jadon Sancho is finally hitting form for Manchester United because he's no longer 'looking over his shoulder' with Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial out of the picture, insists Rio Ferdinand

* Jadon Sancho provided two assists in Manchester United's 4-2 win over Leeds
* The England international struggled to adapt when he first joined the Red Devils
* The £73million summer signing is starting to thrive with regular game time
* Sancho no longer has the competition of Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial

Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is thriving with regular starts now that he is no longer competing with Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial.

The England midfielder joined United from Borussia Dortmund last summer in a deal worth £73million and he struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford, but he has now become an influential figure under Ralf Rangnick.

Sancho continued his upturn in displays with a fine performance in United’s 4-2 win against Leeds on Sunday, supplying two assists at Elland Road.

Former Red Devils defender Ferdinand believes the 21-year-old's good form is partly down to be given regular starts with Anthony Martial heading out on loan to Spanish side Sevilla and Mason Greenwood unavailable.

‘For someone like Sancho, who has been searching for a bit of form and consistency, the fact that Mason Greenwood is no longer available and Martial is no longer available,' Ferdinand said on Vibe With Five Podcast.

‘There is not that big threat that i’m probably not going to play next week or he’s got a chance to play somebody else.

Rio Ferdinand feels Jadon Sancho is thriving without the competition of Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial. Sancho's form has improved, picking up two assists in their 4-2 win over Leeds United. Ferdinand believes Sancho has been told to go make his United's shirt his own. Ferdinand says it was always going to take Sancho time to adapt to the Premier League from the Bundesliga

‘He might have been told behind the scenes, I would argue he probably has been told, you’re going to play now, you’re going to start every game.

‘Go make it your own shirt, that confidence lift and shift from looking over his shoulder to no i’m here to play is a big difference.

‘I think that is now why we’re seeing what we’re seeing from Sancho right now.’

The former centre-back believes Sancho was always going to take time to adapt to the Premier League from the Bundesliga.

‘Adaptation to this league is very different, you watch German football, especially when he was (at Dortmund) the transition when he had to react to when his team lost the ball and probably intensity is nowhere near what it is like now.

‘The physicality of the game in the Premier League is a level or two above what it is in Germany.

‘You’re going to take a bit of time. He’ll be defending more than he ever has in his life, even when he was at City now he’s at United.

‘He will be doing things now, especially off the ball that he has never had to do.

‘It’s still adaptation, learning, new things and that is what happens when you go to a new club, especially a new country. It is to be expected.

‘But you’re not really afforded that time, especially when you’re a stature in terms of signings like he was.’

Jadon Sancho admits he feels 'blessed' to be sharing a Manchester United dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane.... and England winger insists he is learning from the trio 'on and off the pitch'

* Jadon Sancho joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund last summer
* He has entered a dressing room at Old Trafford with plenty of serial winners
* Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba have won trophies in Europe
* Sancho admits he is learning from the trio, including recovery after games

Jadon Sancho insists he is trying to learn from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba at Manchester United in a bid to improve his game.

The England international moved to Old Trafford last summer in a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund, and after a slow start has started to pick up his performances in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old won just the German Cup and Supercup during his time in the Bundesliga, but some of his team-mates have been among serial winners at their previous clubs.

Ronaldo and Varane were in the Real Madrid side that won four Champions League titles and two LaLiga crowns in the previous decade, part of the incredible haul of 32 trophies the Portugal star has won in his career.

Pogba and Varane are also world champions following France's success nearly four years ago in Russia, while the former also won four Serie A titles during his stint at Juventus.

And Sancho admits he feels 'blessed' to be learning from the trio 'on and off the pitch', especially in how they recover following high-intensity matches.

'I'm here with a lot of great players and I'm learning from the best,' Sancho told the club's official website.

Jadon Sancho insists he is trying to learn from the best at Manchester United this season. Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane won four Champions League titles at Real Madrid. Varane and Paul Pogba were also part of the France side that won the 2018 World Cup. And Sancho admits he is trying to pick the trio's brains as much as possible to improve himself

'You've got Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane… all these guys have won major trophies and just being in the changing room with them gives you a blessed feeling.

'I'm definitely learning from them, on and off the pitch, especially in terms of their recovery and how they make themselves better. I'm taking in all the information I can and trying to put it into my game.'

Despite his upturn in form in recent weeks, Sancho has scored just four goals and laid on two assists in 30 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit this season.

It comes after a final season in Germany where he scored 16 goals and provided 20 assists for his Borussia Dortmund team-mates.

But Sancho will no home to haunt his old employers Manchester City in the derby on Sunday.

Jadon Sancho is 'improving every week' and is a 'big game player': Gary Lineker and Jude Bellingham praise England international for brilliant goal in Manchester derby

* Jadon Sancho scored brilliant equaliser in Manchester derby
* Gary Lineker and Jude Bellingham praised Manchester United winger's finish
* Sancho has scored twice in his last five Premier League games
* United were outclassed 4-1 at the Etihad against City on Sunday

Gary Lineker and Jude Bellingham were full of praise for Jadon Sancho, after he temporarily drew Manchester United level against Manchester City.

Trailing 1-0 to an early Kevin De Bruyne goal, United moved the ball quickly as they counterattacked at pace, with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba combining brilliantly to set up Sancho on the left.

The England international received the ball at the edge of the box, took on and easily beat Kyle Walker, before burying his shot past Ederson in the bottom far corner.

Jadon Sancho equalised for Manchester United in the Manchester derby on Sunday

Superb goal from Jadon Sancho. Improving every week,' Lineker tweeted.

Bellingham, who played alongside Sancho at Borussia Dortmund last season, was full of praise for his former teammate.

'JS, big game player,' the England international tweeted, while Usain Bolt also gushed over the finish.

As was Jude Bellingham, who played with Sancho at Borussia Dortmund last season

Sancho's celebration was largely subdued, perhaps owing to the fact he was on City's books before leaving for Dortmund in 2017.

'Jadon Sancho, he is one of our own,' tweeted Scott Patterson of the popular Republik of Mancunia blog.

The 21-year-old, however, never made a senior appearance for City, as other Twitter users noted.

'Sancho’s celebration kills me, apologising to his old club that he made 0 caps for and they also happen to be his new clubs biggest rival,' tweeted Ossdeux.

The 21-year-old played for City's academy and his celebration was largely muted

But others noted Sancho never made a senior appearance for City before leaving for Germany

Sancho moved to Old Trafford for £76million in the summer, following a protracted transfer saga in the summer of 2020 ended with him remaining at Dortmund.

After a slow start to his United career, the England international's form has steadily improved and he has scored twice and provided two assists in the last five Premier League games.

His goal on Sunday, however, ultimately proved meaningless as United were outclassed by their local rivals in a 4-1 hammering.

Default Re: Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho FINALLY looks the part in Manchester United red! £73m winger has taken his game to a whole new level in recent weeks after a sluggish start at Old Trafford and along with Ronaldo is their likeliest match-winner in Atletico showdown

* Manchester United are preparing to take on Atletico Madrid in home second leg
* Last-16 Champions League tie is delicately balanced at 1-1 after Madrid game
* Jadon Sancho is United's most in-form player and is a definite match-winner
* England winger has improved of late following a slow start to life at Old Trafford
* Goals and assists are now coming and at a crucial stage in United's season

As Manchester United strive to make the Champions League quarter-finals for only the third time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, genuine match-winners in their team appear to be in short supply.

Cristiano Ronaldo, obviously, is the man who has scored 25 career goals against Atletico Madrid and one of the few people who gives Diego Simeone nightmares.

The 37-year-old Portuguese star served up a timely reminder of his enduring class with that hat-trick against Tottenham on Saturday night and there really are few better sights in football than CR7 in full flow.

But, gratifyingly for United after their £73million outlay on him, Jadon Sancho increasingly also looks like a player who can settle the biggest matches in their favour.

Jadon Sancho is Manchester United's most in-form player ahead of their Atletico Madrid clash. The £73million winger has stepped up his game in recent weeks and the rewards are coming. United's interim boss Ralf Rangnick says Sancho is reproducing his Borussia Dortmund level

Beyond those two, on current form, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on the United teamsheet capable of stepping up and delivering them into the last eight.

In Sancho's case, it's taken some time to reach this point. His first few months in a United shirt were a struggle but now he has adapted to the pace and physicality of English football, we are seeing something approaching his brilliance in recent seasons for Borussia Dortmund.

Not only has the 21-year-old recaptured the confidence to take on and beat opponents with his skill and blistering pace, he is beginning to deliver goals and assists on a consistent basis.

Another important factor is that Sancho appreciates that sometimes it's better to stop on the ball and check back, bringing better-placed team-mates into play, rather than plough on down a cul-de-sac.

It is incredibly difficult to make snap decision while running at high speed but it's clearly something Sancho has worked on and he's United's most in-form player at present.

Sancho's good form in February was rewarded with the United player of the month award. He has been combining well with United's other likely match-winner, Cristiano Ronaldo

While there's no definitive turning point in Sancho's season - there were some flashes of his best earlier in the campaign - the last few weeks since he was granted compassionate leave for a family bereavement have seen him reach a new level.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick gave Sancho permission to miss the wins over Brentford and West Ham in late January and though obviously an emotional time for the winger personally, the break does seem to have served as a kind of reset.

Since then, he has scored in the league matches against Southampton and Manchester City, plus the FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.

Sancho also set up goals for Bruno Fernandes and Fred in an all-action performance in the win over Leeds at Elland Road. He then laid Ronaldo's second goal on a silver platter in the win over Spurs at the weekend.

Not that every performance has been vintage. Sancho wasn't able to make much of an impression in the first leg against Atletico, which United drew 1-1 thanks to Anthony Elanga's late goal, but then nobody performed any better.

His finish to briefly draw United level in the derby with City was delightful but a total collapse followed as too many of United's players seemed to just give up.

But while consistency continues to stubbornly elude Rangnick's team in their desperate pursuit of a top four finish, Sancho is now emerging as one of the few bright points of a thoroughly underwhelming campaign.

He was rightly named the club's player of the month for February and a glance at his stats show a player who has redoubled efforts.

In his seven league games since that January pause, Sancho's outputs for shots, shot conversion, touches in the opposition box, dribbles attempted and dribbles completed are all up compared to the 17 league games beforehand.

Add in those goals and assists and you clearly have a player who has now adapted to the seemingly unique demands of the Premier League and is starting to thrive.

Sancho is all a blur as he takes on the Tottenham defence to set up Ronaldo's second goal. Sancho has the ability to take on and beat defenders but also realised when to turn back

'He is now getting closer to the Jadon Sancho I've known from Germany,' Rangnick said this week. 'I'm happy to see him play at that kind of level right now.'

But actually, Sancho's returns from his time at Dortmund suggests he has a lot more to offer United. Last season, he chipped in with 16 goals and 20 assists for the Bundesliga club. The season before it was 20 of each.

As well as adapting to a new league, Sancho probably didn't expect to play most regularly on the left wing as opposed to the right. But he played both roles for Dortmund impressively and is starting to do so for United too.

It hasn't been easy for Sancho this season, arriving with a big price tag and needing to adapt. His United move came straight off the back of an agonising penalty miss in the Euro 2020 final. But at last, Sancho is showing the kind of form that was evident in his time at Dortmund

What United hope is still to come is the killer instinct in huge matches such as the one against Atletico. There's an inevitability about Ronaldo popping up to score and Sancho, as a £73m player, will be expected to get to that level.

When the pressure is at the maximum, the best players step up and make the difference. Ronaldo has built an entire career on doing just that.

Ronaldo's arrival late in the transfer window relieved some of the pressure on Sancho because he dominated all the headlines, allowing the England man to settle in away from the spotlight.

But as United's dreadful form saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked, it became increasingly difficult for Sancho to escape criticism.

To his credit, he has responded strongly and the remainder of this season and the next one promises much.

United need match-winners but it can't always be Ronaldo. Sancho is stepping up to share the burden - and at the perfect moment.

'It looks like a whole different team': Jadon Sancho feels Erik ten Hag is turning Man United around, after the winger bagged three goals in the Red Devils' unbeaten pre-season start

* Manchester United have won three and drawn one under Erik ten Hag so far
* Jadon Sancho has been back at his best, with three goals in four appearances
* The 22-year-old claimed ten Hag has turned them into a 'different team'
* The Red Devils get their league campaign underway on Sunday, August 7

Manchester United midfielder Jadon Sancho is confident of improved returns on the pitch from his side after Erik ten Hag made them look like 'a whole different team.'

United are unbeaten in the four pre-season friendlies they have played under ten Hag, with three wins - including a 4-0 win over Liverpool - and a draw.

Sancho has played a key role in the side's early success, with three goals in four games, only one less than his tally for the whole of last season.

Speaking to ManUtd.com, Sancho reflected on what went wrong last season and how things can change. He said: 'Last year wasn't great and I feel like everyone has something to prove for this upcoming season.

'We don't want to put performances in like we did last year and upset the fans. Some fans travelled for a long time to get to the stadium and watch us not perform.

'I'm sure, this year, everyone is going to make up for that and make sure every game we play we put 100 per cent in and make sure the fans are smiling at the end of the game.'

United will be without Champions League football this season after finishing a disappointing sixth in the league last year.

Jadon Sancho said Manchester United feel like a 'different team' under new boss Erik ten Hag. Ten Hag is looking to turn Manchester United back into a competing force in English football

Sancho also touched on the impact ten Hag is having at Old Trafford. He continued: 'The training, especially in pre-season, has been a real positive and all the lads have taken on board what he's saying [ten Hag].

'You can see it in the games, we're creating a lot more chances, keeping the ball more and just making good things out of the style we're playing.

'This pre-season, we have the same players, but it just looks like a whole different team and I do think that's something we're working on and I feel like we're getting better.

'The manager is big on team-bonding and having fun together and doing things like team dinners and things like that. So, yeah, it's helping.'

The Red Devils get their league campaign underway with a home clash against Brighton on Sunday, August 7.

'When he gets a bit of bad news, he makes his own good news': Owen Hargreaves lauds Jadon Sancho as Man United star nets against Sheriff after his England omission... and Paul Scholes thinks Gareth Southgate should have picked him over Jack Grealish

* Jadon Sancho was snubbed for England's 28-man squad for fixtures this month
* But Man United star delivered perfect response by netting for club on Thursday
* Owen Hargreaves believes 22-year-old will be 'surprised' to have been left out
* Paul Scholes insists he was unlucky not to be selected ahead of Jack Grealish

Owen Hargreaves insists Jadon Sancho showed 'everything good' about him in his goal for Man United against Sheriff, on the same day he was overlooked for the England squad.

The 22-year-old - who has scored three goals in eight games this season - was on Thursday left out of Gareth Southgate's 28-man squad for Nations League fixtures against Germany and Italy later this month.

But the former Borussia Dortmund man delivered the perfect response to his Three Lions snub by netting United's opener in their 2-0 win in the Europa League in Moldova.

And speaking to BT Sport, former United midfielder Hargreaves believes Sancho will be 'surprised' to have been omitted from England squad but will be 'delighted' with the emphatic response he delivered with Erik ten Hag's men.

Owen Hargreaves lauded Jadon Sancho after delivering the perfect response to his England snub. Sancho scored the first goal in Manchester United's 2-0 Europa League win against Sheriff

'I think he will be surprised [Sancho not making England squad],' Hargreaves said. 'He has played well, he has had a good run of form this season.

'But he will be delighted with that [goal]. When he gets a bit of bad news, he makes his own good news.

'Jadon is good in these [central] areas, he wants to link with [Christian] Eriksen and Bruno [Fernandes] and Cristiano [Ronaldo].

'There are great options in those attacking areas. The goal showed everything good about Jadon Sancho.'

Asked if being left out by Southgate could be a positive for Sancho, Hargreaves added: 'The players want to be there in the biggest games.

'There is a major tournament coming so the players will be worried about that.

'But it is out of his hands, all he can do is play well this season and today was another good performance like against Liverpool.'

Hargreaves' fellow ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes meanwhile believes Sancho was unlucky not to be picked ahead of Manchester City star Jack Grealish - who has yet to score or assist this season - in the England squad.

'Gareth has picked his players for a reason, possibly from previous squads,' Scholes said.

Both pundits also lauded Sancho for his link play and believes it bodes well for the future if he can continue to link up with his United team-mates.

'I think they signed Jadon as winger given all of his performances for Dortmund,' Hargreaves added. 'But actually he wants to come inside and link up with Bruno and Eriksen.

'Now with Eriksen in the side they have more possession. Coming inside and linking, that is what he [Sancho] is exceptionally good at. He showed a little bit of composure like he did against Liverpool and a good finish.'

Scholes believes the ex-Borussia Dortmund star is better when he comes inside off the wing. Scholes insists Sancho will benefit from linking with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes

Meanwhile Scholes said: 'Sancho and United really showed their quality. It is a great first touch from him and he has got great feet we know that. He is probably a little bit better in those central areas.

'There was a great disguise on the shot and the finish is a little bit scruffy because he kicks it into the ground, but a lovely goal.

'He does not have that electrifying pace to go past someone down the outside or on the inside.

'When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland to link with, he had [Achraf] Hakimi. If he can do that at Manchester United and find Fernandes and Eriksen to link with, he could be a good player for United.'

Jadon Sancho insists he CAN still win a place in England's World Cup squad after Manchester United winger fired timely reminder to Gareth Southgate with clinical finish in Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol

* Sancho has refused to give up on a place in England's squad for the World Cup
* The winger scored his third goal of the season in 2-0 victory over FC Sheriff
* It came after he was omitted from the England squad to face Germany and Italy

Jadon Sancho refused to give up on a place in England's squad for the World Cup after firing Manchester United towards a Europa League win in Moldova on Thursday night.

Sancho scored his third goal of the season in United's 2-0 victory over FC Sheriff in Chisinau after learning that he has been left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the games against Germany and Italy.

Those are England's last fixtures before leaving for Qatar but Sancho still believes he can claim a spot.

'Yeah, 100 per cent, that is one of the targets,' he said. 'It's unfortunate that I didn't get the call-up, but I have to just keep focussing on myself and keep on working hard, week in and week out, that's what I'll do.'

United boss Erik ten Hag also backed Sancho and Marcus Rashford to continue improving and give Southgate a headache between now and naming his final squad.

'It's not up to me, it's the manager of England,' said Ten Hag. 'I cannot be in his seat, I don't want to do it. They are progressing, they started the season well and they will progress even more, I am convinced of that.

'Jadon has so much potential. He had a good pre-season and he's trying to get really fit. He has to keep going with the process.'

Jadon Sancho dedicated his goal against Sheriff Tiraspol to a young fan who gave him a special pair of personalised shin pads. The winger - who was earlier left out of the England squad - gave Manchester United the lead after just 17 minutes in Moldova

Ten Hag is also convinced Ronaldo has room for improvement after the 37-year-old scored his first goal of the season, having tried to leave United in the summer.

'We could expect this when you miss pre-season,' added Ten Hag.

'He has to work really hard and invest to get the right fitness. He will score more goals. He's really close. When he gets more fitness he will score more.

'He's totally committed to this project, totally committed to this team, totally involved. He is constructing connections so I'm happy with that.'

The United manager was happy with the way his team bounced back from an opening Group E defeat by Real Sociedad to beat the Moldovan champions.

'After the first 10 minutes, we found our formation and we made a great goal for Jadon Sancho,' he said.

Six hundred United fans made the trip to Chisinau for their club's first ever game in Moldova which was moved from Tiraspol because of the war in Ukraine. They had a 'United Against Putin' banner taken off them by stadium security in the first half.
