Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba savaged by Paul Scholes again after he was hooked off against Atalanta, with Man United legend insisting: 'He'll still be doing STUPID stuff when he's 35... he goes away with the fairies'

* Manchester United drew 2-2 with Atalanta in their Champions League fixture
* TV pundit Paul Scholes has criticised Paul Pogba for being 'away with the fairies'
* He said that Pogba will need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he does 'stupid stuff'
* Rio Ferdinand has said that Cristiano Ronaldo should help look out for Pogba

Paul Scholes has criticised Paul Pogba for being 'away with the fairies' during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Atalanta on Tuesday evening.

The French international struggled to perform during Manchester United's fixture in Italy and was ultimately hooked off for Nemanja Matic in the second half.

Reflecting on Pogba's performance, Scholes said the Manchester United midfielder would need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he has the tendency to do 'stupid stuff' on the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Scholes said: 'Pogba needs somebody on him all the time. Somebody there that he totally respects, he needs experienced people behind him.

Paul Scholes has criticised Paul Pogba for being 'away with the fairies' during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Atalanta on Tuesday evening (above). He said that Pogba will need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he does 'stupid stuff' on the pitch

'How old he? 28? He's a really experienced player. But he's one of them that will get to 35 and be exactly the same.

'He'll still be doing the stupid stuff where he's stud rolling the ball, holding people off showing how strong and skilful he is.

The French international struggled to perform during Manchester United's fixture in Italy and was ultimately hooked off for Nemanja Matic in the second half (above). Ferdinand said the responsibility of helping Pogba should fall onto the shoulders of Ronaldo

'The biggest thing with Paul is his concentration. He goes away with the fairies at times.

'You think of the Juventus team he played in, where he was brilliant and was why we signed him.

'The experience around him - [Andrea] Pirlo, [Giorgi] Chiellini, [Leonardo] Bonucci, [Gianluigi] Buffon, an aggressive manager. He will need that treatment until he's 35.'

Rio Ferdinand added his thoughts on Pogba situation at the club, claiming the midfielder had failed to live up to expectations at Manchester United.

He said that the Frenchman does not look as stimulated for the Red Devils as he does for his country.

Ferdinand said: 'Paul [Pogba] would agree that he hasn’t delivered to the level he would expect of himself in a Manchester United shirt.

Ferdinand said he 'couldn't think of anyone else other than Ronaldo' to help the Frenchman. Scholes and Ferdinand's comments came not only after he was hooked off against Atalanta but after he was shown a red card against Liverpool

'He is not getting the international jolt he gets with France. Maybe he needs that fear of not playing if he isn't performing.'

Ferdinand went on to agree with Scholes by saying that Pogba needs to be pushed by his team-mates.

He also said that he felt the responsibility should fall onto the shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ferdinand told Scholes: 'I can't think of anyone else other than Cristiano that would get a hold of Paul and going "I'll be on to you half time."

'Maybe it's a generational thing, maybe it's different now. In our changing room these conversations would be going on.'

Scholes and Ferdinand's comments about Pogba came not only after he was hooked off against Atalanta but after he was shown a red card against Liverpool.

The Frenchman was sent off in the 60th minute of the game after he lunged into a two-footed tackle on Naby Keita with his side 5-0 down at Old Trafford.

Pogba was initially booked but, after a VAR check, referee Anthony Taylor sent him off on the hour mark.

Sportsmail previously revealed that Pogba had apologised to his team-mates for his red card at Old Trafford, though did not say anything to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the loss.

Speaking about the red card at the time, Scholes told Premier League Productions: 'Paul Pogba coming on to the pitch at half-time to try and help the team and maybe get a little respectability about it, tries to stand on the ball, tries to show how strong he is in the middle of the pitch… gives the goal away.

'Then later on gets sent off with a ridiculous tackle. Now you're 5-0 down with 10 men. You'd have to think, if Ole's still a manager there, will we see Pogba again in a United shirt?

'He's caused mayhem over the last couple of years. Everyone knows what a talent he is, everybody trusts him, every manager trusts him, tried to give him his head and let him be the player he's been.

'But with all the commotion, not signing his contract, almost holding the club to ransom, and then he comes on and does something like that.

'It's not Ole's fault, don't get me wrong, but that's part of it which almost summed the United performance up today.

'Look, he probably will play [again] won't he? But I don't think they will be missing anything if he doesn't.

'He's had numerous chances, he keeps saying he lacks consistency, but that is just [a lack of] discipline and disrespect for your manager and your team-mates, what he's done today.'

Paul Pogba 'emerges as top target for soon-to-be Barcelona boss Xavi' as Spain legend eyes free transfer to spark Nou Camp revival mission

* Reports claim Paul Pogba is now highly sought after by Barcelona
* The cash-strapped Spaniards are said to be eyeing a free deal in the summer
* Club legend Xavi is soon set to be unveiled as Ronald Koeman's replacement
* It is reported that Xavi sees Pogba as a prime candidate to restore the club

Wantaway Manchester United star Paul Pogba has emerged as the top summer transfer priority of LaLiga giants Barcelona, according to recent reports in Spain.

The France international currently finds himself in an awkward position at Old Trafford, with his contract set to expire in the summer and his future more uncertain than ever before.

Club record £89million star Pogba has been linked with the exit door for many months, though now it has emerged that soon-to-be Barcelona boss Xavi is desperate to secure his signature.

That is according to reports in El Nacional, who claim that Pogba is 'one of four names' that Xavi has already put on the table for the Barca chief, and demanded they be acquired.

Paul Pogba has emerged as a top free agent target for cash-strapped Barcelona this summer. Soon-to-be new manager Xavi has apparently included Pogba in a list of four players he is demanding, alongside Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland

Pogba, 28, is set to be one of the most sought after players in the world this summer simply because of his availability without a lofty price tag.

The player has long since been linked with a move to Real Madrid or his former club Juventus, with agent Mino Raiola talking up both European sides as possible destinations.

But now Barca have emerged as a heavy contender, with Xavi said to be urging for his signing - along with Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland who will soon be available for a buy-out clause fee sitting just under £70m. Both players are represented by Raiola.

The other two names Xavi is targeting are Jules Kounde at Sevilla and Dani Olmo at Red Bull Leipzig, who is in the final year of his contract and, as it stands, available to negotiate a free transfer in January.

This week Paul Scholes criticised Pogba for being 'away with the fairies' during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Atalanta on Tuesday evening. He said that Pogba will need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he does 'stupid stuff' on the pitch. Pogba is not happy at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and will soon depart on a free deal

This week, Pogba has found himself at the centre of attention once more following an unconvincing European display for United.

Pogba returned to action for the first time since receiving a reckless red card against Liverpool in the Premier League, and put in an abject showing against Atalanta in Bergamo before being substituted.

His lacklustre performance saw Pogba come under intense criticism from United legend and former midfielder Paul Scholes, who said that he would need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he has the tendency to do 'stupid stuff' on the pitch.

Speaking after the game in the BT Sport studio, Scholes said: 'Pogba needs somebody on him all the time. Somebody there that he totally respects, he needs experienced people behind him.

'How old is he? 28? He's a really experienced player. But he's one of them that will get to 35 and be exactly the same.

Paul Pogba 'has NOT shown any inclination to commit to Manchester United', with wantaway midfielder set to leave Old Trafford for free when his contract expires next summer

* Paul Pogba has just months left remaining on his Manchester United contract
* The 28-year-old reportedly has no intention to sign a new deal at Old Trafford
* He has hit a dip in form after starting the season with seven assists in four games

Paul Pogba's second spell at Manchester United is increasingly likely to be coming to an end with reports claiming he has no interest in signing a new deal.

Pogba has just months remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford and will be able to discuss a free transfer with clubs abroad from January.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, it seems that Pogba will be leaving United rather than renewing, with the midfielder not showing any inclination to commit to a fresh deal.

The 28-year-old started the season in electrifying form - registering seven assists in four Premier League outings for the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba has not shown any inclination to commit to Manchester United, claim reports. The 28-year-old's contract at Old Trafford expires in just a few months and he looks set to leave

However, since then his form has tailed off drastically and he was sent off within minutes of coming on as a second-half substitute in the 5-0 home humiliation by Liverpool.

The World Cup winner with France was disappointing once again on Tuesday night during United's 2-2 Champions League draw at Atalanta and was hauled off on 69 minutes.

Pogba's withdrawal was a big statement by under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - especially considering fellow central midfielder Scott McTominay was on a yellow card and they were chasing an equaliser with the scoreline 2-1 in Atalanta's favour.

And reflecting on his performance post-match, United legend Paul Scholes was damning of Pogba's effort: 'Pogba needs somebody on him all the time. Somebody there that he totally respects, he needs experienced people behind him.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba's injury absence could be a blessing in disguise for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer... Man United have coped without the French midfielder before, the manager won't have to figure out where to play him and Donny van de Beek may finally get a chance

* Paul Pogba will be sidelined for between 6-8 weeks with a thigh muscle injury
* It's a blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in terms of personnel levels in weeks ahead
* But it's hardly a disaster for Man United and could solve the manager's problems
* Pogba started the season well but his form has tailed off dramatically
* Under-pressure Solskjaer can now play Fred and McTominay without guilt
* And Pogba's absence may finally afford Donny van de Beek a run in the team

Football's wheel of fortune spins quickly. Rewind six or seven weeks and Manchester United had the genuine look of title contenders, with everything coming together for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Now they're deep in turmoil, with that silverware challenge already dead, rivals outclassing them and Solskjaer fighting to save his job.

Paul Pogba has been United's collapse in microcosm. When the French midfielder contributed seven assists in United's first four games of the season, we wondered if he'd finally hit peak form.

Since then, he's looked as lost and forlorn as everybody else in the team, allowing frustrations to consume him with that horrible two-footed lunge on Naby Keita to see red in Liverpool's 5-0 win at Old Trafford.

That afternoon was a modern-day nadir for United - the team, manager and Pogba himself - and with his contract set to expire next summer, some suggested we'd never see him play for the club again.

We certainly won't see Pogba until the new year - a thigh muscle injury sustained while attempting a shot in training at France's Clairefontaine training base on Monday will see him sidelined for between six and eight weeks.

Pogba would have been suspended for United next game away to Watford anyway but now he'll also likely miss Premier League matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Brentford, Brighton, Newcastle and Burnley plus two crunch Champions League fixtures with Villarreal and Young Boys.

But how much of a setback this actually is for Solskjaer and United is open to debate. Pogba's absence could actually temporarily solve a few issues when it comes to picking the midfield.

Paul Pogba suffered a thigh muscle injury during a training session with France on Monday. Pogba told fans he is set for a scan in the coming days after injuring his right thigh, and he is on crutches as he awaits further news on the issue. It caps a torrid few weeks for the midfielder, who was sent off in the 5-0 defeat by Liverpool. He was then taken off by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a shocking display against Atalanta

The long-standing question of where to play Pogba - in central midfield or further forward on the left - is one headache the manager won't have to deal with.

It could finally open the door for Donny van de Beek, United's forgotten £40million signing, to show us what he is capable of having been so starved of game time.

And if Solskjaer wants to persist with a 3-5-2 set-up, he doesn't have to figure out how to accommodate Pogba when he really requires two holding players in Fred and Scott McTominay.

The reality is United have learned to cope without Pogba in recent years.

It is incredibly hard to argue that he would have made the slightest bit of different in narrowing the enormous gulf in class to Manchester City had he been available for Saturday's derby.

Quote:
The games Pogba could miss

November 20 Watford (A)

November 23 Villarreal (A)

November 28 Chelsea (A)

December 2 Arsenal (H)

December 5 Crystal Palace (H)

December 8 Young Boys (H)

December 11 Norwich City (A)

December 14 Brentford (A)

December 18 Brighton (H)

December 27 Newcastle (A)

December 30 Burnley (H)

Pogba started the season in electric form, setting up four goals in the 5-1 win over Leeds. But the Frenchman's form has slumped in recent weeks as United have descended into crisis

Last season, Pogba produced his best football in a United shirt around the turn of the year, scoring crucial goals at Burnley and Fulham that very briefly offered hope of a title challenge.

When he suffered a hamstring injury in mid-February, United still went unbeaten in six league games without him, as well as progressing in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Pogba's steady flow of goals and assists did continue once he regained fitness but had he remained injury-free, would he alone have bridged the eventual 12-point gap to champions City? Unlikely.

United arguably missed him more in 2019-20, when ankle problems ruled Pogba out for much of Solskjaer's first full season in charge.

He did find form after the Premier League restarted in June but, again, United finished the season 33 points shy of champions Liverpool and 15 behind City.

United have managed to cope when Pogba has been out injured before and will do so again. In many regards, being without Pogba for a while solves a tactical dilemma for the manager

Pogba is a hugely talented midfielder, but few players have the influence to make up such deficits.

He remains an enigma to many. More than capable of running the midfield in a Premier League game on his day but anonymous on so many others.

So while losing Pogba for so long is a blow to Solskjaer in terms of stocks of personnel during a hectic part of the season, he has managed without him often enough in the past.

It was easy enough to accommodate him during those early games this season, when Marcus Rashford was still sidelined and there was a vacancy on the left of attack.

Against opponents towards the lower end of the table, Pogba could be fielded in central midfield and given licence to push forward with just one holding player required.

But there was no space for him against Liverpool because Rashford was back and both Fred and McTominay were needed, leading to that disastrous cameo from the bench.

Solskjaer will probably persists with Fred (left) and Scott McTominay (right) in his midfield

It's unlikely he would have started against Tottenham or Man City either and in between he had a shocker against Atalanta.

With Solskjaer feeling the heat, you wouldn't blame him for sticking with the 'McFred' combination even against the likes of Watford. Pogba's absence means he won't have to feel guilty about leaving him out anyway.

What happens now with Van de Beek will be fascinating. The Stretford End sung his name repeatedly during the second-half on Saturday until Solskjaer eventually brought him on with 10 minutes left.

Even that amount of time was a lot for the Dutchman, who has been an unused substitute in 11 games out of 16 this season and must find it very difficult to hide his frustration.

The counter-argument is that Van de Beek has shown little to suggest he deserves more regular football when he does get on the pitch. Too many games have passed him by.

Pogba's absence may finally afford Donny van de Beek and extended run of games at United. Van de Beek has spent the bulk of his United career on the bench and things must change

Solskjaer may also feel he doesn't want to bow to pressure from the fans just because they were singing Van de Beek's name.

But Pogba's injury bumps him up the pecking order and there are games ahead when Bruno Fernandes could be given a rest and Van de Beek start, or where he could slot into central midfield.

You sense that if Solskjaer doesn't make use of him now, there really is no point him prolonging the agony beyond January when United can cut their losses.

Few United fans will feel Pogba's absence is a crisis. He has enjoyed some purple patches during this calendar year but being without him is nowhere near as disastrous as being without, say, Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea or Rashford in top form.

Solskjaer won't have to figure out how to make best use of him for a while and others will get their chance to lift some of the gloom that has enveloped Old Trafford.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba's Man United struggles are just like 'flash in the pan' Juan Sebastian Veron insist Richards and Shearer ... with the ex-Argentina midfielder's ability 'off the scale' but he lacked 'consistency' to fulfil his talent - much like the Frenchman

* Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have likened Paul Pogba to a former midfielder
* Pogba has found his performances criticised since he returned to Man United
* The pundits have likened his struggles at Old Trafford to Juan Sebastian Veron
* As they did at the time with Pogba, United broke their transfer record for Veron
* Yet the Argentine struggled to settle in Manchester and left after just two years

Paul Pogba has been likened to former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron in failing to maximise his potential at Old Trafford.

Much like Pogba, United made Veron a record transfer when he joined for £28million from Serie A giants Lazio.

A lot was expected of the then Argentina international but he fell well short of expectations and left two years later filed as a 'flop' of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Pogba returned to United in 2016 and while he has stayed far longer than Veron did, the 28-year-old's struggles have been likened to the Argentine by Micah Richards and Alan Shearer.

'I just remember him being a flash in the pan, before he came to Man United you expected big things,' Richards told the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast.

'He's like Pogba, Pogba's stayed longer but when you watch Pogba, you want him to do something brilliant every time and the same with Veron as well you wanted him to score 40-yard goal or 60-yard pass, it was just a little bit fast for him.

'He wanted to slow down the tempo a little bit. This is what I don't understand, people always ask me, why did it not always happen?

Paul Pogba (left) has been likened to Juan Sebastian Veron (right) in struggling at Man United. Veron is remembered as one of the transfer flops by Sir Alex Ferguson despite his ability. Pogba is seen as a supremely talented player but he has struggled to find consistency. Micah Richards and Alan Shearer believe a comparison to Veron is suitable. United's No 6 turned down the offer of a new contract and can leave for free next summer

'You've got that ability, he worked hard, it's consistency. His ability was off the scale, wasn't it, it's one thing I've wondered. By all accounts, he worked really hard, was a good lad, it just didn't work out.'

Shearer wholeheartedly agreed with Richards as to the comparison between the two United midfield players.

'I definitely agree with the Pogba comparison,' he added. 'I think everyone looked at Veron and thought "wow, what a player," £28m which was a lot of money then and everyone was expecting that of him every week. Ability-wise it was in there.'

Pogba is out of contract at the end of the season and looks to be coming to the end of his time at United for a second time in his professional career.

Even five years on the World Cup winner continues to be savaged in the media and only recently did Paul Scholes rip into Pogba for a display away to Atalanta in the Champions League.

Reflecting on Pogba's performance that night, Scholes said the United midfielder would need to be babysat 'until he is 35' as he has the tendency to do 'stupid stuff' on the pitch.

Scholes said: 'Pogba needs somebody on him all the time. Somebody there that he totally respects, he needs experienced people behind him.

'How old he? 28? He's a really experienced player. But he's one of them that will get to 35 and be exactly the same.

'He'll still be doing the stupid stuff where he's stud rolling the ball, holding people off showing how strong and skilful he is. The biggest thing with Paul is his concentration. He goes away with the fairies at times.

'You think of the Juventus team he played in, where he was brilliant and was why we signed him. The experience around him - [Andrea] Pirlo, [Giorgi] Chiellini, [Leonardo] Bonucci, [Gianluigi] Buffon, an aggressive manager. He will need that treatment until he's 35.'

Pogba has faced criticism for his decision not to commit his future to the club in recent weeks.

His commitment has been questioned - but he went out of his way to refute claims he ignored head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the loss to Liverpool in a social media post that was then supported by the club last week.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Mino Raiola gives his strongest hint yet that Paul Pogba is nearing a Man United exit, saying: 'December is the month of dreams... and I can't stop dreams', just six weeks before he can sign a contract with Real Madrid, PSG or Juventus

* Paul Pogba's contract with Manchester United is set to expire in the summer
* France midfielder, 28, has shown little willingness to agree to an extension
*He is sidelined with a thigh injury sustained during training with France
* Pogba's agent Mino Raiola has again stirred up speculation about a transfer
* Player would be able to sign an agreement with another club in January
* And Raiola declared that 'December is the month of dreams' on Italian TV

Paul Pogba's agent Mino Raiola has dropped the strongest hint yet the French midfielder could leave Manchester United, declaring 'December is the month of dreams.'

With his current Old Trafford contract due to expire in the summer, Pogba would be able to sign an agreement to join another club this January.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and his old club Juventus are among potential destinations for a player who has failed to scale the heights after returning to United in 2016.

And Raiola has yet again stirred up speculation with cryptic remarks in an interview with Italian channel Rai.

He said: 'December is the month of dreams… and I can't stop dreams, but it is better to not speak about Paul.

'If some former Man United players don't speak about me and Paul, they won't work anymore.

'It's too early to speak about Paul Pogba's contract. Let's see what happens. I can't stop anyone from dreaming.'

Pogba, 28, started the season in excellent form for United, registering seven assists in their first four Premier League matches.

However, his performances have tailed off as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team also slumped and his career at the club reached a fresh low when he was sent off for a poor tackle on Naby Keita during the 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

He was then taken off early by Solskjaer during a disappointing performance in the 2-2 draw away to Atalanta in the Champions League.

As well as being suspended for domestic games, Pogba then suffered a thigh injury while training with the France team ahead of this month's World Cup qualifiers.

It means Pogba is likely to be sidelined until the New Year.

Paul Pogba's future at Manchester United has come into focus once again following remarks from his agent Mino Raiola that 'December is the months of dreams'. Raiola made the remarks in Italy as the French midfielder's contract runs down at Old Trafford. It's far from the first time Raiola has whipped up speculation over Pogba's future at United

'Well as you can see, I got a little injured - hopefully it's not too bad, I'm probably going to do a scan in the next days to see how bad it is,' Pogba said on Instagram last week, with the clunking of crutches in the background.

'Yeah, we are here - but we are going to come back strong, you already know - we don't lose faith, we don't lose the positive vibe - keep smiling.

'Everything happens for a reason, we are blessed still and we are going to come back and keep it up - that's how it is, thank you for the support - all love, we are going to be back soon.'

One option for Pogba is to join Real Madrid with Marca reporting this week the Bernabeu club 'remain attentive' to his situation at United.

The former world-record £89million signing has come in for some stinging criticism in recent weeks, with Paul Scholes saying after the Liverpool sending-off that Pogba should never play for the club again.

Scholes followed up that remark by claiming that the ex-Juve man was 'away with the fairies' and that he would still be making the same mistakes aged 35 after a sub-standard display in the 2-2 draw at Atalanta.

It's far from the first time Raiola has spoken publicly about Pogba's situation at United.

In December 2020, he caused disruption for Solskjaer ahead of a crunch Champions League game against RB Leipzig by declaring that the 'best solution' would be to 'sell him in the next market.'

Pogba duly started the match in Germany among the substitutes as United lost 3-2 and dropped into the Europa League.

Raiola twice intervened during the 2019-20 campaign, saying 'now could be a good time to find a new challenge' ahead of the new season in June and then 'everyone knows the willingness of Paul to move on' the following month.

In February 2020, Raiola suggested that Pogba could rejoin Juventus that summer, sparking a war of words with Solskjaer, who said: 'Paul is our player and not Mino's.'

Responding on social media, Raiola said he hoped the manager wasn't suggesting 'Paul is his prisoner.'

Raiola added: 'Paul is not mine and for sure not Solskjaer's property. Paul is Paul Pogba's.'

Manchester United 'are looking at midfield options' in case Paul Pogba leaves for nothing next summer with £89m man's future still up in the air and Ralf Rangnick saying he won't try and convince him to stay

* Paul Pogba's contract at Manchester United is due to expire next summer
* France midfielder, 28, hasn't yet agreed to an extension to stay at Old Trafford
* Interim coach Ralf Rangnick made clear he was happy for Pogba to depart
* But United wouldn't gain anything back for their club record £89m outlay
* Old Trafford club are, however, already sizing up potential midfield recruits

Manchester United 'are looking at midfield targets in the transfer market' with Paul Pogba likely to depart Old Trafford.

France midfielder Pogba, 28, will be a free agent in the summer when his contract expires and remains undecided as to where his future lies.

But United are already reportedly planning for life without him and are assessing options if Pogba leaves for nothing.

The Daily Telegraph report that any midfielder brought in to replace their £89million record signing will be of international standard but not a marquee name in the same mould as Pogba.

Talks over a potential new contract for the 2018 World Cup winner took place in the summer without agreement, though negotiations are not definitively over.

Pogba started the season encouragingly, recording seven assists in his first four Premier League appearances, but his form slumped badly as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure as manager fell apart.

Pogba reached a low point in his United career when he was sent off for a bad tackle on Naby Keita during the 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool, just 15 minutes after coming on at half-time.

Manchester United 'are looking at replacements for midfielder Paul Pogba' with the Frenchman's contract due to expire next summer. United's interim coach Ralf Rangnick has already made clear he won't try and persuade Pogba to stay at Old Trafford

Solskjaer hooked him 69 minutes into a crucial Champions League match against Atalanta a few days later after a shocking performance.

He then suffered a thigh injury during a training session with France during the November internationals and has been recovering in Dubai, returning only to Manchester last weekend.

Pogba will be sidelined until January, as confirmed by interim manager Ralf Rangnick last week.

The German coach said he would make no effort to convince Pogba to stay at United.

'Players have to want and stay at a big club like Manchester United,' Rangnick said.

'If a player does not want to play for a club like Manchester United, medium or long-term, I don't think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

'I don't think anyone in the club should try to convince a player to stay.'

Paul Pogba's future at Manchester United remains 'deadlocked' as his Old Trafford contract runs down but Real Madrid perform U-turn on their transfer stance for the midfielder

* Paul Pogba's contract at Man United is set to expire at the end of the season
* The Red Devils are reportedly only willing to let Pogba go if he wants a transfer
* He has opted to see out his contract but will be free to open talks from January 1
* Real Madrid were linked to the midfielder but have decided against a move
* Los Blancos worry signing Pogba would stunt the progress of their youngsters

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba's future at Old Trafford remains 'deadlocked' after Real Madrid performed a U-turn on their transfer stance.

The 28-year-old has been out of action since November after picking up an injury while on international duty with France.

The Frenchman's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and he will be free to open talks with overseas clubs from January 1.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have all been linked with the midfielder but the Red Devils are only willing to part ways with Pogba if he chooses to leave.

Pogba has reportedly decided to see out his contract at Old Trafford and leave the club on a free transfer in summer, according to The Express.

Real Madrid long appeared to be his most likely destination but the LaLiga side are said to perform a U-turn on their transfer stance.

Los Blancos have reportedly rejected a move for Pogba over the fear of stunting the progress of youngsters Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde.

None of Europe's other top-flight sides are yet to make a move for the France international and questions remain over his role at United for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils have been linked to a host of midfielders ahead of the January window, but it is unclear if they will make a move if the World Cup winner stays in Manchester.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick revealed that the club's focus is ensuring Pogba returns to fitness.

'I've spoken to Paul. On the day he came back from Dubai, we spoke in person,' he said.

'Right now, it's about him getting fit again, to get training fit, not just be match fit.

'This will take us another couple of weeks and, until then, my full focus is on the players who are available and who can play in the upcoming games.'

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Real Madrid 'pull out of the race to sign Paul Pogba to focus on landing Kylian Mbappe'... with the Man United midfielder now set to join PSG or Juventus when his contract expires next summer

* Paul Pogba will be out of contract at Manchester United this summer
* He can now secure a free transfer abroad with six months to run on that deal
* The France ace has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the past
* But Madrid are no longer in contention to prise him away from Old Trafford

Real Madrid are not in the running to sign Paul Pogba as their priority is to secure a free deal for Kylian Mbappe next summer, according to reports in France.

Pogba, 28, has entered the final six months of his current deal at Manchester United and does not appear close to an extension.

Sportsmail revealed back in November that United have only made one formal extension offer to their £89million midfielder, which he subsequently rejected.

But he is still waiting on a second offer to be put on the table, meaning a summer departure is currently on the cards.

Madrid have been heavily linked with Pogba in recent years, with the Bernabeu appearing his most likely destination should he depart Old Trafford.

However, French newspaper Le Parisien claim the Spanish giants are no longer in contention to sign him - because they want to focus their efforts on signing Mbappe.

The latter is in a similar predicament to France team-mate Pogba, as his contract at PSG is set to expire in the summer.

Real Madrid are no longer in the running to sign Paul Pogba when his Man United deal expires. Madrid are instead hellbent on snapping up out-of-contract PSG star Kylian Mbappe. Pogba is now likely to head to either PSG or Juventus when his United deal is up this summer

It is believed Mbappe is weighing up his options now that he is eligible to negotiate a free move elsewhere, yet Real are seemingly the frontrunners to snap him up in July.

As a result, Florentino Perez and co do not have any immediate ambitions to sign Pogba, who collects a £300,000-a-week wage.

The United ace is therefore likely to join either PSG or ex-club Juventus if he leaves Manchester as expected this summer.

Pogba has spent the last five years at United after sealing a return to the club, registering 38 goals and 51 assists in 212 appearances.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba will give his all for Manchester United 'even if it's only to show enough for a new contract elsewhere', says Ralf Rangnick as club's record signing nears injury return with his deal winding down

* Paul Pogba has not played for Manchester United since early November
* He was expected back at the start of this month but that has been delayed
* The 28-year-old Frenchman returned to training at Carrington on Monday
* Ralf Rangnick said he was impressed by player's performance levels in training
* Rangnick believes Pogba will give his all this season - even if it's to move away

Ralf Rangnick believes Paul Pogba will give his all for Manchester United until the end of the season — if only to secure a big-money move away this summer.

Pogba trained for the first time in two and a half months on Monday following a thigh injury, and is set to play again early next month.

By then, United's record £89million signing will have less than five months left on his £295,000-a-week contract.

'By the way, my contract as a manager is also expiring in the summer,' said United's interim boss ahead of Wednesday's trip to Brentford.

'We have the same goal. We have the same ambition to be as successful as we can possibly be in the next three or four months.

'For me, it's not a question if a player has an expiring contract. The question is how much does he still want to be a part of this group? How much does he still feel emotionally and physically on board?

'As long as this is the case, why shouldn't Paul Pogba - now after two-and-half months of injury and fully fit again - also want to show up?

'He wants to show the fans of Manchester United, the board, the whole world what kind of player he can be. Even if it's only to show enough for a new contract elsewhere, he will be highly motivated to do that.

Ralf Rangnick believes Paul Pogba will give his all for Manchester United until the end of the season — if only to secure a big-money move away this summer. Pogba (back, second from left) posted a picture of return to training at Carrington on Monday

'Why should I then not play him? There is a difference of how players deal with their current situation. If they handle that in a professional way, of course I will play players although they have a contact expiring in the summer.'

Rangnick praised Pogba's performance levels in training, having previously disagreed with the fact that the player was recovering from his injury in Dubai rather than Carrington.

'He showed what an extraordinary player he could be,' added Rangnick. 'What I saw was very promising for the future. After the international break, I think he will be a serious candidate for the first XI.'

The German has been less impressed with the attitude of Pogba's compatriot Anthony Martial, and the two men clashed over Rangnick's claim that Martial did not want to be part of the squad at Aston Villa on Saturday.

However, he insisted that the matter is now closed following a clear-the-air meeting.

'I nominated him before the game and he was not part of the group. You can draw your own conclusions from that,' said Rangnick on Tuesday.

'I had a personal conversation with him on Sunday about what happened and how I saw the whole situation, and the matter is now resolved.' Rangnick has also spoken to Jadon Sancho after United's £73million summer signing was left on the bench at Villa Park in favour of teenager Anthony Elanga.

Sancho's 23 games for United have produced just two goals and no assists, and Rangnick believes the England winger is struggling mentally with the pressure of moving to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund for a big transfer fee.

'It's a different league and he is playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's also got to do with a lot of the things up here in his head,' said Rangnick, who confirmed United have switched permanently to a 4-3-3 formation that suits wingers more than the 4-2-2-2 he used after first taking over.

'Everyone expected he would be one of the best players in the team. This is psychologically and emotionally a more challenging situation than the one at Borussia Dortmund.

'The level of expectation was a lot lower compared to situation where you come to a club like Manchester United for a high transfer fee with a high level of expectation.

'Whenever I see him train, he's one of the best players in the sessions. But it's not only about training at the highest possible level. I said that to him the day before yesterday: confirm the performances you show in training when you're playing on the pitch.

'These are exactly the kind of steps he has to make to become a top player for the next 10 years at this club. We can give him a helping hand, but in the end it's up to him.'
