Dwight Yorke tells Anthony Martial he must 'buckle down if he is to have any future at Manchester United' - but claims Frenchman has been 'unfairly treated' by his Old Trafford managers so far

* Former United striker Yorke says Martial must find a quick way back into team

Dwight Yorke tells Anthony Martial he must 'buckle down if he is to have any future at Manchester United'

Martial is one of seven players whose futures are in doubt with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly keen on trimming his squad to raise transfer funds amid interest in West Ham's Declan Rice and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund.

And United are understood to be planning talks with the players in question to discuss their futures before the winter transfer window opens in the new year.

The Frenchman marked his return to the startling line-up with his first goal of the season against Everton on Saturday but has struggled for form.

And Yorke said it was time for him to show his worth.

'When you play for this club and you're not doing the business and your form dips for whatever reason you're going to be under scrutiny. He's got to buckle down really if he has a future at this football club,' he told Goal.

Anthony Martial's future at Old Trafford in doubt following several inconsistent seasons. The Frenchman marked his return to the startling line-up with a against Everton on Saturday. Dwight Yorke says Martial must find a quick way back into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team

'He's undoubtedly got immense talent and all the attributes we like to see in an attacking player and there's no question he can be that vital player for us but at the moment he's not in the squad and he's got to find a way to get back into the team.'

Martial is still just 25 but his future at Old Trafford is highly uncertain following several inconsistent seasons.

Yorke added: 'He's been a bit of a mixed bag to be fair. He had that one season when he was outstanding and he looked a serious threat but I think he's been unfairly treated in some way because I think that No. 9 role is a specialist role and you have to play that position week in, week out, to get familiarised with it.

'When he first started off he started off on the left and then the right so he's not really settled that much.

'He needs to be playing week in week out to really see the best of him. You can't give him 10 or 20 minutes and expect him to be the finished article, it just doesn't happen.'

Louis Saha backs Manchester United to turn their fortunes around and 'go on a run' as he singles out Anthony Martial as the player who is 'UNPLAYABLE' when on form

* Louis Saha spent four years at Man United as a player between 2004 and 2008
* Anthony Martial is into his seventh season at the club and has scored 79 goals
* He has fallen out of favour this season, starting just two Premier League games
* Forward was handed a rare start against Villarreal by caretaker Michael Carrick

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has backed Anthony Martial to play a crucial role in helping the side get back on track this season.

The 25-year-old has been a peripheral figure at Old Trafford this season, starting just two league matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With the Norwegian coach being relieved of his duties on Sunday, though, Martial was named in the starting line-up for United's clash at Villarreal two days later.

Interim boss Michael Carrick picked up a 2-0 win in his first game in the dugout as United secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, and Martial did his chances of getting more game time no harm at all by causing problems down the left wing.

Anthony Martial was back in action for Michael Carrick's Manchester United at Villarreal. Saha feels that it is not too late for his old club United to turn their season around

United have been in wretched form over the past two months, losing five of their last seven top-flight fixtures to drop to eighth in the table, but Tuesday's result was a step in the right direction.

Saha feels that it is not too late for the team to turn their season around, and he has tipped the side to gather some momentum with Martial at the heart of their success.

Speaking to 101greatgoals.com, Saha said: 'Because the Premier League is a marathon, I still believe they can pick up form and go on a run.

'When they eventually find the right formula and things click – especially in their heads where at the minute there’s too much over thinking – those players are unstoppable when they play naturally.

‘On their game, no-one can touch that front four or five. Martial, when he’s on top form, he is unplayable.'

Martial's United career appeared to be drifting when Solskjaer was at the helm, with the forward reportedly growing frustrated at his lack of opportunities.

However, he looked sharp on his return to the side this week, and he may now get the chance to shine at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, when the Red Devils travel to the league leaders Chelsea.

Ralf Rangnick agreed a six-month deal to take over at United on an interim basis on Thursday but the German will not be available for Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

Anthony Martial holds talks with Man United interim boss Ralf Rangnick over his future as wantaway striker bids to seal a January exit with Sevilla keen on a loan move for the Frenchman

* Spanish side Sevilla are understood to be keen on a loan move for Martial
* Rangnick has said he sees no need to convince wantaway players to stay on

Anthony Martial held talks with Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick on Wednesday as he tries to secure a move away next month.

The 26-year old Frenchman is keen on a move to Sevilla after growing frustrated with his lack of starts at United this season.

His agent Philippe Lamboley irritated Rangnick earlier this month by going public with his client's desire to leave prior to discussing it with the United boss.

Lamboley said: 'Anthony wishes to leave the club in January. He just needs to play. He doesn't want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.'

A knee injury ruled Martial out of United's games with Crystal Palace and Norwich City but he was at United's training ground on Wednesday for his afternoon chat with Rangnick hoping to resolve his future.

Rangnick has already declared that he does not see a need to convince players to stay at United and that his squad is too big.

Sevilla would want a loan deal for Martial and United must decide if that suits them with plenty of competition for two places up front.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed the addition of analyst Ewan Sharp to Rangnick's backroom team.

The 29-year old Scot has joined from Lokomotiv Moscow and was at United's training ground last week. He formerly worked with Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls.

Anthony Martial DENIES claims he refused to play in Man United's draw with Aston Villa as he would 'never disrespect the club and the fans' after Ralf Rangnick said the striker did not want to travel

* Anthony Martial has denied claims he refused to play for Manchester United
* United had a weakened front line on Saturday and drew 2-2 at Aston Villa
* Ralf Rangnick claimed Martial refused to travel amid his desire to leave United
* But the Frenchman took to social media to dispel those rumours on Saturday
* United were also without Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford for the trip

Anthony Martial fiercely denied claims made by Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick, who said the Frenchman had not wanted to be part of Manchester United's squad for their 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.

Martial wants to leave United, with Sevilla interested in signing him this window. United had only eight players on the bench, including two goalkeepers, as Rangnick dropped the bombshell that Martial had been unwilling to travel.

'He didn't want to be in the squad,' said Rangnick. 'He would have been in the squad normally, but he didn't want to. That is the reason why he was not travelling with us yesterday (on Friday).'

But the French striker took to social media to deny those allegations, insisting he would 'never disrespect the fans' after a long career at Old Trafford to date.

Anthony Martial has denied claims by Ralf Rangnick that he refused to play for Manchester United this weekend. Manager Rangnick claimed the Frenchman did not want travel to Aston Villa. Martial took to Instagram to deny Ranginck's claims that he was going on strike

Martial wrote on his Instagram story: 'I will never refuse to play a match for Man United. I've been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and will never disrespect the club and the fans.'

United are seeking a loan fee for Martial and would like the forward's wages to be paid in full. Earlier in the week, Cristiano Ronaldo called for an improvement in attitude at Old Trafford after another season in which they have struggled to challenge the Premier League elite.

The Red Devils were pegged back from two goals up on Saturday night as strikes for Jacob Ramsay and Philippe Coutinho cancelled out Bruno Fernandes' brace either side of half-time.

Reflecting on the result, Rangnick told Sky Sports: 'It is very difficult to find positives after this, we have spells where i thought it was our best game since I have come here. We were completely dominant.

'We have taken steps forward, but there are still many things we need to improve on. The plan was to press them in the mid-zone, and we did that for the first 30 mins, they were some of the positives.

Rangnick named eight substitutes and two goalkeepers on his bench for the 2-2 draw at Villa

'When you are 2-0 you must defend better. We still gave away too many goals; we were not as compact and then conceded both goals. We were not as courageous, the way we prepared from our goal in terms of pressing was great

'We have two more important games coming up, what we have shown today is a step forwards, this draw doesn't feel like a point.'

With Martial refusing to play, United's forward line was further weakened by injuries to Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford, with Edinson Cavani and youngster Anthony Elanga partnering the likes of Fernandes and Mason Greenwood in attack.

Rangnick hopes to see both Ronaldo and Rashford back in the team for United's next game: a trip to Brentford on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils' two dropped points on Saturday night meant they remained in seventh place, five points behind West Ham in fourth with only one game in hand over the Hammers.

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to step in and 'shut down' Anthony Martial if he's found to be lying about refusing to be a part of Ralf Rangnick's squad for their clash with Aston Villa.

Rangnick claimed that Martial, who is pushing for a move in the January transfer window, told him that he did not want to be in the squad for Saturday's trip to Aston Villa.

'He didn't want to be in the squad,' said Rangnick. 'He would have been in the squad normally, but he didn't want to. That is the reason why he was not travelling with us yesterday (on Friday).'

Martial wrote on his Instagram story: 'I will never refuse to play a match for Man United. I've been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and will never disrespect the club and the fans.'

However, while Sportsmail understands the two have had clear-the-air talks, Ferdinand wants the higher-ups at Old Trafford to bring the hammer down on the Frenchman if he's found to be lying, given how his comments have 'belittled' Rangnick.

Rio Ferdinand urged Man United to settle Anthony Martial (left) and Ralf Rangnick's (right) row. Interim boss Rangnick insisted that Martial refused to play for United's clash with Aston Villa. Taking to social media, Martial hit back at Rangnick's claim, saying he never refused to play. United icon Ferdinand believes the club need to get to the bottom of the matter quickly

‘Do you know what? That situation there is a perfect example for the hierarchy of that football club,’ Ferdinand said on the Vibe with Five YouTube channel.

‘If Martial isn’t telling the truth there – and I’m not casting any dispersions – but if he’s not telling the truth when he says he’s never refused to play or disrespected the club, if he did refuse then someone at that football club needs to come out and absolutely put this to bed.

‘They need to give pure clarity, put a line in the sand, put a flag down and say, “this is us and this is where we’re at”.

‘At the moment, Rangnick has come out with what he said and Martial responded and basically said the manager is lying.

‘Someone better come out today or tomorrow and say something.

'You can’t have a player coming out and belittling what you say. No chance.

‘He needs to get shut down if it’s true. If Rangnick is right, there’s no way any player should be allowed to speak like that.

‘I don’t understand it. Manchester United can’t allow players to talk like that. There’s a truth and a false in this situation and I want to know.’

Martial has not played for United since early December due to a knee injury and the uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.

He met with Rangnick shortly after he began the job and told him of his desire to leave amid interest from Sevilla.

However, United rejected a loan offer from the Spanish club because it did not cover all of the player's £200,000-a-week wages.

Rio Ferdinand says Anthony Martial 'NEEDED' his loan move to Sevilla as his Manchester United exit is confirmed - with club legend admitting he has been 'underwhelmed' by the player after thinking he could be 'ultra-special'

* Anthony Martial has joined Sevilla on loan for the rest of the current season
* The Frenchman has struggled to get regular playing time at Manchester United
* Rio Ferdinand has described the move as a positive one for both parties
* He believes that a fresh start is something Martial needs to reignite his career

Rio Ferdinand has delivered his verdict on Anthony Martial's loan move from Manchester United to Sevilla.

It was confirmed on Tuesday night that the Frenchman had joined the LaLiga side until the end of the season.

Sevilla have agreed to pay Martial's wages while there is no obligation to buy him at the end of the deal.

Speaking on the latest episode of his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand said it was a deal suited both the player and Manchester United.

Anthony Martial has joined Sevilla on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season

He added: 'I think Anthony Martial needs this. He needs to play first-team football, he needs to be a regular, he needs to start playing on a regular basis now on a consistent level.

'For the last year or so, even longer maybe, he hasn't been a regular and he's needed this move.

'I'm interested to see who else goes you've probably got Donny van de Beek probably gonna go somewhere - interested to see where he goes.

'The same with Jesse Lingard - my head would say to me Newcastle but these are players that need to go out and play football and Martial is one of them.'

There were high hopes for Martial when he exploded onto the scene by scoring against Liverpool on his debut.

However, after playing 269 games for the Red Devils, in which he has scored 79 goals, Martial has struggled recently to get regular game-time at the club.

Ferdinand said: 'He showed glimpses throughout his career at Man United where you think; 'Wow, this kid could be ultra-special'.

"But then there's been times where he's been under-whelming and you thought; 'This isn't good enough'.

"Hopefully he improves [on loan] and it frees up a bit of space for Man United to go and get someone else.'

Rio Ferdinand urged that Martial needed to leave to play regular first-team football. Martial has struggled to live up to early promise at Old Trafford and has seen his playing time drop

The former United defender also pointed out Martial's inconsistency in terms of his performances.

Ferdinand said that winning teams 'can't have' inconsistent players in their team.

He said: 'I just feel with Martial he didn't move enough off the ball, he didn't make runs in behind, but he's quick.

'Sometimes you've got to vary the way you attack opponents and you can't always want the ball to feet. He probably didn't hurt defenders in behind as much as he could have.

'When you look at a (Sadio) Mane, (Marcus) Rashford sometimes, (Raheem) Sterling, they don't all just come to feet as for a defender it then gets easy to read. You have to vary the point of attack. I don't think that he did that enough.

'You see things levelled at him that he didn't smile and was moody but you just look at more the way he played his football - his inconsistencies.

'When you're going to be a winning team you can't have people who are inconsistent in the team.'

Anthony Martial admits he is happy to be used ANYWHERE at his Sevilla unveiling and says 'the most important thing for me is playing' after struggling for minutes at Man United this season

* Anthony Martial completed a six-month loan deal to Sevilla from Man United
* The French forward has struggled for game time at Old Trafford this season
* Martial admits he is happy to play anywhere for Julen Lopetegui's Sevilla side
* The striker revealed that he is ready to get going at the LaLiga side straight away

Anthony Martial has revealed he is happy to play anywhere at Sevilla after struggling to find his right position at Manchester United, who he has just departed on loan.

The Frenchman joined the LaLiga title challengers on a six-month loan deal worth £5million in loan fees to Sevilla, after struggling for game time at Old Trafford this season.

Martial struggled to find a place in a United team filled with many attacking talents, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani - with both the left wing and striker roles very filled up.

But Martial admits he does not mind where he ends up playing in Sevilla and is ready to start playing immediately.

Anthony Martial admits he is happy to play anywhere in Sevilla's attack after his new loan move. The Frenchman was confirmed as a Sevilla player after joining on loan from Manchester United. Martial struggled to find a place in United's squad in a very competitive attack line. Martial revealed he was convinced by Julen Lopetegui and Sevilla to join them for six months

'I've spoken with the coach, but the most important thing for me is playing,' Martial told the Sevilla official website. 'It doesn't matter where, so I can do my best and do what the manager wants from me.

'I'm ready to play. I trained hard to be ready and if the coach wants me to play, I'll do it now.'

Martial will now compete with Sevilla attackers Rafa Mir and Youssef En-Nesyri for the striker roles in Julen Lopetegui's squad, while the likes of Erik Lamela, Lucas Ocampos and Papu Gomez are the wide options.

The 26-year-old had told United he wanted to leave with Sevilla his first choice. There were tentative approaches from other clubs such as Newcastle and Tottenham but Martial was keen to go abroad.

Juventus and Barcelona were also interested but did not want to take on his salary.

But irrespective of the striker position, Martial admitted that a major factor for him picking Sevilla as his club for the rest of the season was down to how much they wanted to have him in their team.

'What convinced me to come is the contact with the sporting director and the coach, they showed me that they wanted me,' Martial revealed.

'I wanted to come so I could play and show what I can do in the team. In the last few months I have been training a lot.

'I hope to be able to train soon with my team-mates and work well with them to fight for the competitions we're still in.'

Martial could make his debut for Sevilla on the first weekend in February when Lopetegui's side travel to Osasuna for a LaLiga challenge.

Sevilla went into the winter break four points behind leaders Real Madrid having played the same amount of matches, with 16 rounds of fixtures remaining in the season.

Default Re: Anthony Martial

Signing Anthony Martial is a Sevilla statement of intent in their bid for a second ever LaLiga title, with star sold the project and he'll be crucial if they can help him enjoy playing again

* Anthony Martial has officially signed for Sevilla on loan from Manchester United
* His new club are four points behind leaders Real Madrid in the LaLiga title race
* The move is a statement of intent for Julen Lopetegui and sporting chief Monchi
* Sevilla will now look to help Martial to re-find his smile and enjoy football again
* He has moved on to put himself in the shop window and to be recalled by France

The table doesn't lie after 22 games – Sevilla are just four points behind leaders Real Madrid and they have kept the pace despite suffering more than most through injuries, coronavirus, and international call-ups.

If the missing players come back, if Diego Carlos stays, and if Madrid have problems of their own in the run-in, then Sevilla have a chance of winning what would be only the second league in their 132-year history.

Signing Anthony Martial is a statement of intent – the clearest indication that Sporting Director Monchi believes the title is possible this year too.

The 26-year-old was unveiled on Wednesday and will make his debut a week Saturday away at Osasuna.

He has joined the club because he wants to put himself in the shop window for a permanent move next summer, and to get himself back in the France squad ahead of the next World Cup.

But he's also going because Sevilla have sold the club to him – even if it's only for five months, they have convinced him that he will start enjoying being a footballer again.

Sevilla have signed Anthony Martial on loan and will hope he can fire them to the LaLiga title. Martial left Manchester United for more game time, and has put himself in the shop window. His new club will look to help the striker enjoy his football again after selling him their project

Real Madrid remain favourites to win the title but if they get side-tracked by the Champions League double header with Paris Saint Germain and a domestic cup run.

And if Carlo Ancelotti's preference for not rotating in the first half of the season comes back to bite him at the business end of the campaign then no team will be better placed to overtake them.

No one wants it more than Julen Lopetegui who knows winning the league in Spain with a club who have not managed it since 1946 would leave him with the pick of Europe's top jobs.

Even running Ancelotti close and reaching the Europa League final – this year set to be played in Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan stadium – would edge him closer to a chance with an elite club.

Manchester United are still scouring the market for options post Ralf Rangnick. If Lopetegui gets Martial playing again – something beyond Rangnick in the short time he had to work with him; and also for the most part beyond Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho – then it would put him in the frame for that job too.

At first Martial is likely to be back in the central striking berth he favours. He won't wear nine because that's already been taken by another recent recruit, the Mexican Tecatito Corona, but he will be the team's nominal nine while the Moroccan forward Youssef En-Nesyri plays the African Nations Cup.

When En-Nesyri returns there might be the need for more flexibility. Lopetegui favours a 4-3-3 and both Martial and En-Nesyri could play in any of the front three positions along with live wire Argentinian Lucas Ocampos.

However the chips fall Sevilla have boosted their attack in a way few of their supporters believed possible when whispers of the club going for Martial first emerged.

Martial is likely to play as a No 9 in Spain, but the versatile star can also be used on both wings. Ralf Rangnick was not able to extract the best of Martial and was happy to allow him to leave

They have not been deterred by Manchester United supporters admitting they are glad to see the back of Martial. Sevilla have rehabilitated down-in-the-mouth strikers before.

When Frederic Kanoute left Tottenham for Sevilla in 2005 it didn't seem like Spurs might regret allowing him to leave but the Mali striker went on to win six trophies and finished up as the fourth highest scorer in the club's history.

Martial was asked about Sevilla's French connection in his presentation press conference yesterday. He will have Jules Kounde to help him acclimatize with the central defender, wanted for two seasons running by Chelsea, almost certain to stay at the club until June.

Slightly less certain is the future of Diego Carlos. Sevilla have no intention of accepting a bid of just 35m euros for their defensive leader. The same bid made in the summer might have more success with time to spend the money and rebuild.

But with the clock ticking on the transfer window Sevilla, even with one of the game's best Sporting Directors, would be hard pushed to adequately cover his departure.

A silly bid – closer to 60m euros would make for a change of heart but as they days go by it becomes harder to envisage them having their arm twisted, there is so much at stake.

To use the famous Spanish football idiom signing Martial and losing Diego Carlos would be like pulling the blanket up around the ears only to expose the feet – one step forward and another back, in other words.

If they can keep their centre-back and if Sevilla can put a smile back on Martial's face (he was laughing on Wednesday during the usual misunderstandings of a translator-assisted press conference) then all bodes well for the end of Sevilla's season.

'In football who knows,' he said when asked if he might stay beyond the original five months. 'For now it's just for five months'.

If in those five months he helps Sevilla win a trophy – either the Europa League in their own stadium, or La Liga, would be historic achievements – then everyone will be happy.
