Rio Ferdinand describes criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo as 'BLASPHEMY' and claims suggestions he doesn't work hard enough for Manchester United are a 'disgrace' and 'disrespectful'

* Rio Ferdinand said criticism of Ronaldo is 'a disgrace and absolute disrespect'
* Portuguese has been criticised for not working hard off the ball for United
* 36-year-old has scored seven goals in 10 games in all competitions this season
* Ferdinand said goals are the only metric Ronaldo should be judged by

Rio Ferdinand has hit out at Cristiano Ronaldo's critics, suggesting that questioning the Portuguese contribution for Manchester United amounted to 'blasphemy'.

Ronaldo has scored four goals in seven Premier League games and seven in 10 appearances in all competitions since returning to Old Trafford in August, but has been criticised for being too passive when not in possession.

Specifically, the 36-year-old has come under criticism for not pressing opposing defenders in the wake of United's dismal capitulation against Liverpool 10 days ago.

The Reds exploited United's disjointed pressing at will, slicing through their rivals' midfield and defence as they dismantled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on target in United's 3-0 win at Spurs on Saturday evening. Rio Ferdinand believes criticism of his former teammate is completely unjustified

Ronaldo was far from the only culprit and Ferdinand insisted the Portuguese was definitely not as issue for United.

‘I’ve heard some talk and the only way I can explain it, is it’s blasphemy, when I heard some people talking about Ronaldo’s the reason why Man United aren’t going to be a success,’ Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel.

‘Ronaldo turning up at Man United and yeah it’s great but he’s going to be the reason why they don’t do anything.

[SIZE="1"The 36-year-old has now scored four goals in seven Premier League games this season. Ronaldo has scored crucial winners against Villarreal and Atalanta in the Champions League. Ferdinand believes his former teammate should be judged on his goals return [/SIZE]

‘Listen, I’ve been seeing too much of it, don’t talk like that. Please, it’s a disgrace, absolute disrespect.'

Ronaldo opened the scoring with a brilliant volley as United won 3-0 away at Tottenham on Saturday, before setting up Edinson Cavani for his team's second with a deft through ball.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has already scored crucial winners in the Champions League against Villarreal and Atalanta.

Goals were the currency Ferdinand, who won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during Ronaldo's first spell at Old Trafford, believes his former teammate should be judged on.

‘A player that’s done what he’s done in the game, a superstar at any generation, he’ll be one of the best players in any generation you can think about,' he continued.

'And even again he just told people at the weekend what he’s about here […] pressure’s on he scores.

‘To think that because he doesn’t press, because he doesn’t run as much as other people… that’s not what he’s there for.

‘You play to people’s strengths sometimes, you can do that when you’ve got a superstar in your team sometimes for certain clubs.’

'People say Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't work hard enough but he does the hardest thing in the game - score goals': Rio Ferdinand hails Manchester United hero after he rescued draw at Atalanta

* Cristiano Ronaldo scored two as Manchester United snatched a draw at Atalanta
* The forward came to the rescue again following a stuttering Red Devils display
* It is the third time this season he has scored late on in the Champions League

Rio Ferdinand has defended Cristiano Ronaldo's work rate, by insisting his end product justifies his value to Manchester United.

Ronaldo's defensive side has been called into question in recent weeks, with his lack of pressing criticised as part of United's inconsistent form this term.

Yet, the forward was once again his team's hero on Tuesday night, scoring at the end of each half to rescue a crucial point in their Champions League encounter at Atalanta.

The late goal is his third in the Champions League this term, having also netted in the 81st minute in the 3-2 win over Atalanta in the reverse fixture and also a last-gasp winner over Villarreal - in addition to his opening night strike in the defeat at Young Boys.

Following the game, former United team-mate Ferdinand praised the 36-year-old for always delivering when the pressure was fully on the Red Devils at crucial stages.

'People say [Cristiano Ronaldo] doesn't work hard enough but he does the hardest thing in the game - score goals', Ferdinand told BT Sport.

Rio Ferdinand was left full of praise for Ronaldo following his one-man show at Atalanta. The forward scored both of his side's goals including a dramatic stoppage time equaliser. Three of Ronaldo's four goals in Europe this term have come in the final 10 minutes

'At that critical moment he steps up - in any country, in any stadium, at any time. He just arrives on the biggest occasions and delivers.

'There aren't anymore words that we can say about this guy than the way he puts the in the back of the net.'

United fell behind to a Josip Ilicic strike in the first half in the group stage tie in Bergamo, and looked to be heading into the break on the back foot before Ronaldo struck in stoppage time following a slick passing move from the visitors.

Duvan Zapata then restored Atalanta's advantage just over 10 minutes into the second period with the Italian side then looking like they were going to hold out for a famous win over the Premier League outfit.

But Ronaldo stepped up to hit a crisp low effort from the edge of the box into the bottom corner as the game ticked into stoppage time, grabbing a crucial point for a stuttering United.

The result means United now head into the penultimate match day top of their Champions League group and with a chance of sealing qualification for the last-16 with a game to play.

Default Re: Cristiano Ronaldo

Forget his running stats, work-rate and the criticism from pundits, Cristiano Ronaldo's superstar quality keeps digging Man United out of holes - and proving they were RIGHT to bring him back home

* Manchester United scraped a 2-2 draw at Atalanta in the Champions League
* Cristiano Ronaldo earned the visitors a point with a stunning 91st-minute volley
* Ronaldo now has nine goals in 11 matches since re-joining the club this summer
* However, the 36-year-old has been criticised for his lack of defensive output
* Despite those criticisms the forward continues to bail United out with his goals

Cristiano Ronaldo and goals. Four words that have become synonymous for the majority of his stunning career, including on Tuesday night.

Ronaldo bailed out Manchester United once more this season as he rescued them a fortuitous point at Atalanta in the Champions League.

The iconic No 7, who had already scored in the first half, rescued an unlikely 2-2 draw in Bergamo with a sublime and instinctive first-time volley from outside the penalty box to break Atalanta hearts in second-half stoppage time.

That 91st-minute strike took his tally to five goals in four matches in Europe's elite club competition for 2021-22. Breaking it down further it's all the more impressive when you consider that includes two late winners and an injury-time equaliser.

Cristiano Ronaldo came to Manchester United's rescue once more this term on Tuesday night. Ronaldo scored a 91st-minute volley to rescue the Red Devils a 2-2 draw against Atalanta. This wasn't the first time that the iconic No 7 has bailed out United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini jokingly told Ronaldo to 'go to hell' after his late equaliser

Ronaldo has come in for criticism during United's malaise, due to his lack of defensive pressing from the front, but you can't argue with his numbers.

His goals in the Champions League alone have seen United earn five extra points to top Group F. Without them they'd be bottom and staring at another humiliating group-stage exit.

The 36-year-old was brought in the summer to deliver in the important moments and he's currently doing that - especially in Europe.

United's DNA is renowned for late comebacks and that's been a recurring theme in this competition, spearheaded by Ronaldo.

Trailing 1-0 at home to Villarreal on September 29, it was the Portuguese superstar who completed the turnaround with a close-range goal in the 95th minute - virtually the last kick of the match.

He then followed this up against Atalanta at Old Trafford on October 20. This time the Red Devils were losing 2-0 at half-time before the forward scored a towering header on 81 minutes to seal the most unlikeliest of 3-2 victories, considering their first-half showing.

And the Italians must be sick of the sight of Ronaldo after his brace in Tuesday's reverse group-stage encounter.

'At the end of the match, I spoke with Ronaldo,' Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini told Sky Italia. 'He's an incredible player, some even call him a problem.

'That's a nice problem to have. He rarely gets it off target; half the time he scores, half the time it is saved.

'I told him, "You know what we say in Italy? Go to hell".'

Gasperini's stance certainly contrasts with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's who can thank the heavens for having Ronaldo on his side.

'Cristiano is just incredible - it's what he does,' the Manchester United boss said.

'If there is anyone you want that chance to fall to it's him. His technique was just phenomenal.'

Ronaldo has been criticised for not working harder for the team, but Solskjaer added: 'I'm sure the Chicago Bulls didn't mind having Michael Jordan either.

'We all have a role and responsibilities. Cristiano a leader in the group and that's what he does, he scores goals. He does provide those moments. He's getting better and he's feeling up to speed now.'

Solskjaer hailed his goalscorer as a leader - and compared him to NBA icon Michael Jordan. Rio Ferdinand was left full of praise for Ronaldo following his one-man show at Atalanta. Last month Gary Neville said that Solskjaer must find a solution to 'compensate' for Ronaldo

Ronaldo now has nine goals in 11 appearances across all competitions for United this season but he has come in for criticism for his defensive duties - a topic that was especially highlighted after United's chastening 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool on October 24.

This viewpoint has been rubbished by Rio Ferdinand who reiterated his stance once more on Tuesday night.

'People say he doesn't work hard enough, doesn't close people down, doesn't press, but he does the hardest thing in the game - score goals,' he told told BT Sport.

'At that critical moment he steps up - in any country, in any stadium, at any time. He just arrives on the biggest occasions and delivers.'

He's certainly done that for the Red Devils at times already this season. His Premier League goals have either given United the lead (against Newcastle on September 11 and at Tottenham on Saturday) or drawn them level (at West Ham on September 19) - highlighting his worth.

For all of Ronaldo's output though, it's unquestionable that United's team performances have been below par - with many pointing to the No 7 as a reason why.

Prior to that Liverpool mauling, Ronaldo's ex-United team-mate Gary Neville admitted that the club must compensate for Ronaldo's lack of defensive output.

'They had to do the deal, the club had to do the deal, Ole had to do the deal,' he said on Sky Bet's The Overlap Fan Debate. 'With it comes big positives, but with it also comes problems.

'Ronaldo had to be managed, shall we say, in the 2008 Barcelona semi-final, away from home, Cristiano Ronaldo was shoved up front on his own, [Wayne] Rooney and Ji-Sung Park were shoved wide and [Carlos] Tevez was brought back onto [Sergio] Busquets. Because you couldn't carry him in the big games because generally he doesn't work hard enough.

'He is playing up front there now, you are never going to press from the front. The idea that Manchester United are going to be a pressing team is never going to happen, he wasn't pressing 10 or 15 years ago.

Ronaldo gave United the lead at Tottenham in the league on Saturday with this stunning volley. It's now up to Solskjaer to find a solution to maximise Ronaldo's talents and United's as a team

'So then you say what is the style of Manchester United? Are they a counter-attack team? That becomes difficult when you are playing against teams that are inferior to you most of the time.

'What you get is teams like Aston Villa and Everton counter-attacking, bit of quality, a half decent team against Manchester United will cut through them. That is a problem. So they have got to stop that.

'There is big decisions that Ole has to make in the next few weeks to compensate for Ronaldo coming. What they have to find now is a way of playing with Ronaldo in there.

'I support the signing, he is a great… I love him to bits, I couldn't love him any more, but United have to find a way of playing to compensate him.

'If you then put Bruno Fernandes in there, you then put Mason Greenwood in there, you then put Paul Pogba in there, with Cristiano you are going to get cut through on the counter attack and you aren't winning any leagues. Trust me you aren't winning any leagues. So there has got to be a balance to the team.'

There is still plainly no balance within the team, with Solskjaer's switch from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-5-2 formation still not yielding any inspiring team efforts.

However, with Ronaldo up front you always have a chance - as proved once again on Tuesday night.

Atalanta will be delighted they don't have to face the goalscoring No 7 until the quarter-final stages now, if both reach that far.

Now it's time for Solskjaer to find a system that will allow Ronaldo to continue to do what he does and United to play to the sum of their parts.

Cristiano Ronaldo 'is building a £7million mansion for his family on the 'Portuguese Riviera' to use when the Manchester United star retires'

* Cristiano Ronaldo has purchased a £7million plot of land in Quinta da Marinha
* The region is called the 'Portugese Riviera' as it is so prestigious and expensive
* Reports state Ronaldo plans to use the mansion as a family home when he retires

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly ordering a £7million mansion to be built on the 'Portuguese Riviera' for his family to use when he retires.

The Manchester United forward, 36, has bought a large plot of land in Quinta da Marinha, Cascais, on the west coast of his home country Portugal, nicknamed the 'Portuguese Riviera' given its status as a prestigious, expensive area.

And reports claim Ronaldo is planning to settle down there with his family when he eventually hangs up his boots.

The Red Devils star splashed out on the most expensive flat ever sold in Lisbon, Portugal's capital city, in 2020 - paying £6.5m for a state-of-the-art 3,100-square foot pad in Avenida da Liberdade with a gym and an indoor swimming pool.

Cristiano Ronaldo is said to be building a £7m mansion to use as a family home when he retires. The Manchester United star owns an apartment block in Funchal where his mum, 66, lives

That will be half an hour's drive away from his new purchase in Cascais, with work just starting on building up the mansion for Ronaldo.

Newspaper Correio da Manha states it will be an investment and considered part of the player's property empire, while magazine TV 7 Dias claim Ronaldo is planning to use it as a family home.

What they called a 'future neighbour' said to the magazine: 'The land was fenced off recently and it was purchased by Ronaldo.

'This is where he's coming to live with his family when he finishes his career. Everyone round here knows it and of course we're happy. Ronaldo is Ronaldo.'

The former Sporting Lisbon, Real Madrid and Juventus star also owns properties including a seven-storey apartment block in Funchal, Madeira, where his mother Dolores, 66, and brother Hugo live after he bought it two years ago.

Ronaldo, along with partner Georgina Rodriguez and his four children, also owns a luxury villa in Turin, Italy from his time at Juventus, as well as a £4.8million mansion on a gated fortress estate called La Finca close to Madrid.

The 36-year-old is now at the age when footballers tend to retire, but upon signing for United, doctors apparently told him he had the body of a 26-year-old, suggesting he may be able to play on at the highest level for several years yet.

He has scored 13 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions this season for Ralf Rangnick's side.

Cristiano Ronaldo 'does everything but wear the captain's armband' claims Mikael Silvestre as the ex-Man United defender rubbishes claims the forward is a problem and insists he is a leader

* Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 13 goals since his sensational return to Man United
* But the Portugal forward came under fire for a perceived lack of effort in attack
* Ex-Man United man Mikael Silvestre has defended the star, rubbishing the claims
* Silvestre insisted Ronaldo is a leader, despite not wearing the captain's armband

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo does everything on the pitch but wear the captain's armband.

Ronaldo made a sensational return to Old Trafford in summer, 12 years after he left United for Real Madrid.

The Portugal international hit the ground running scoring a brace in his first game back for the Red Devils and has since bagged 13 across all competitions.

Ronaldo was crucial for United, scoring a number of clutch goals for the side during their overall struggles under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner came under fire for a supposed lack of effort on an attacking front in the build up to the Norwegian's sacking.

The Red Devils suffered a run of humiliating results with defeats to Liverpool, Manchester City and Watford before the club finally sacked the Norwegian.

Ex-Man United defender Mikael Silvestre has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as a leader. The forward has scored 13 goals in all competitions this term, most recently against Norwich. Silvestre played alongside Ronaldo for five years at United before leaving the club in 2008

The team repeatedly came under fire for their performances but Ronaldo in particular attracted critics of his perceived lack of pressing.

But Silvestre, who played alongside Ronaldo for five years at Old Trafford, has rubbished the claims of Ronaldo being a problem in the Red Devils' camp.

‘This comment about him being a problem is absolute rubbish. Look at the ratio of goals scored; chances created since the start of the season,’ Silvestre told the Daily Star via FreeBets.com.

‘He wants to help, wants to win trophies. He didn’t come to United to relax pre-retirement, it’s an even a bigger challenge than what he faced at his previous clubs.

‘He left United after winning the Ballon d'Or, winning the Premier League and being a top player. He knew there would be questions asked of him and what he can bring but he’s a leader.

‘He doesn’t wear the armband, but he shows the way, and everything has been positive in what he’s done.’

Cristiano Ronaldo puts signed Portugal No 7 shirt up for charity auction in aid of La Palma evacuees after record volcano eruption wrecks thousands of homes

* The La Palma volcano eruption has caused havoc on the Canary Island
* More than 3,000 building have been engulfed and 7,000 people evacuated
* Cristiano Ronaldo has pitched in to help repair the damage with a signed shirt

Cristiano Ronaldo has offered his support to victims of the La Palma volcano eruption off Spain, putting a signed No.7 Portugal shirt up for bidding.

More than 3,000 buildings have been destroyed with 7,000 forced to leave their homes on the Canary Island, after the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted in September.

Ronaldo scribbled his signature on the Portugal home kit, writing a message of solidarity with the islanders.

'Not even the force of a volcano will be able to with La Palma. All my support for the beautiful island,' the forward said.

Bidding for the Manchester United superstar's shirt will begin on Christmas Eve and end on January 6, with all proceeds heading straight to the victims, according to Cadena SER.

Ronaldo gave £850,000 to hospitals in Portugal at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this is his latest charity effort.

Cristiano Ronaldo has pledged one of his signed No 7 Portugal shirts to the La Palma disaster. The Manchester United star sent a message to the evacuees offering his support to them

The Cumbre Vieja eruption is the longest La Palma has ever seen, but recent reports suggest the volcano may finally have stopped erupting.

Ronaldo's Portugal lost 2-1 to Serbia in their last international fixture, completing a poor November international break after a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.

The former Real Madrid star hasn't played in 10 days, with Manchester United having two matches postponed due to the latest Covid outbreak.

Statue of Cristiano Ronaldo is unveiled in INDIA 'to inspire young boys and girls', as critics question why the state of Goa needs a £12,000 65-STONE tribute to a footballer from 5,700 miles away (but at least it isn't as bad as his bust in Madeira!)

* Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured in India with a £12,000, 65-stone statue

Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured in India with a controversial sculpture as the state of Goa looks to inspire the next generation of footballers.

A statue of the Portugal and Manchester United superstar has been unveiled in the former Portuguese colony - 5,700 miles away from his homeland.

The tribute in Calangute is said to have cost around £12,000 and weighs a whopping 65 stone, according to The Times of India.

Goa minister Michael Lobo posted two photos of the statue onto his Twitter account and wrote: 'For the love of football and at the request of our youth we put up Cristiano Ronaldo's statue in the park to inspire our youngsters to take football to greater heights.

'It was an honour to inaugurate the beautification of open space, landscaping, garden with foundation and walkway.'

He told ANI: 'This is for the first time that the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo has come up in India. This is nothing but to inspire our youth.

'If you want to take football to another level then this is what young boys and girls will look forward to, taking selfies and looking at the statue and getting inspired to play.'

However, the statue has split opinion with some reportedly waving black flags in protest at the installation.

Meanwhile, critics have suggested footballers from their own country should have been honoured instead.

'There are so many great footballers from Calangute like Bruno Coutinho and Yolanda D’Souza, who have brought laurels to India by playing football at international level. Why couldn’t their statues be installed? They are from Calangute. Why the Portuguese footballer’s statue has been installed,' Calangute constituency forum president Premanand Divkar told The Navhind Times.

The western Indian state of Goa was a colony of Portugal but was annexed by India 60 years ago.

A bust of Ronaldo in the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's place of birth attracted worldwide attention a few years ago.

Madeiran artist Emanuel Santos was tasked with creating the image of Ronaldo and spent three weeks on the project, with the bust unveiled when Madeira airport was renamed in Ronaldo's honour in March 2017.

However, the work was heavily mocked and the sculpture was later replaced with a different version.
