Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

Mason Greenwood's shirt wasn't even printed when he became Manchester United's youngest ever Champions League player 12 months ago, but now he is firmly in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans... so can he really become their next big thing?

* Mason Greenwood made his Manchester United debut at 17 years and 156 days
* In doing so he became their youngest Champions League players 12 months ago
* Now, he has forced himself into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent plans
* The striker, who is genuinely two footed, is being tipped as United's next star

A year is a long time in football. Just ask Mason Greenwood.

On March 6, 2019, the striker made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 17 years and 156 days at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

His inclusion was so unexpected that the United kitman had to borrow numbers and lettering for Greenwood's shirt from their French opponents – his number 54 emblazoned with PSG's badge.

It was billed as three-minute cameo for a promising young player who could go back to Ashton on Mersey School later that week and tell his mates about his French odyssey. In actual fact, it was the start of a much more compelling journey which has seen him emerge as a first-team regular at just 18 years old.

Twelve months on from becoming the youngest United player to grace the Champions League stage, he's now a constant thought in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans, being omitted from a Premier League matchday squad just once this season by the Norwegian.

In truth, though, his route to the top began long before he stepped on to the pitch in Paris.

Mason Greenwood, at just 18, is being tipped to be the next big Manchester United star. His debut 12 months ago was so unexpected that the club needed to use PSG printing in Paris

Growing up in Wisbey, near Bradford, his talent was evident even from the age of six. One match for Idle Juniors saw him star in a 16-1 win for his side. Greenwood scored each of his side's 16 goals.

Mark Senior, who worked as a development coach at United's training youth training centres in Yorkshire, recalls his arrival at United.

'It was in the Telegraph & Argus newspaper (in Bradford),' Senior told The Athletic when discussing how the club were alerted to Greenwood's ability.

'The game finished 16-1 and he got all 16. I remember mentioning this to Mason and he said, "Yeah if it weren't for me we'd have lost 1-0." He didn't say it in a cocky way, just a confident way.'

'You can tell the difference. Now, whether he'd got it from an adult and copied it I don't know but that is what he said — and it was the first time I'd met him.'

Greenwood lets fly against Watford last month - his fifth Premier League strike for United

That confidence has never been misplaced. Greenwood has impressed at every level through his development at United, none more so than when he was given the green light to train with the first team at the age of 17.

His biggest attribute, as has been widely attested to, is his ability to use both feet. The teenager is truly two-footed, comfortable taking penalties with his left foot before stepping up to send in a corner with his right.

During the Carabao Cup tie with Rochdale earlier this season, Greenwood stepped up to score from the spot with his left foot during the 1-1 draw. During the shoot-out he also converted, only this time with his right.

The teenager is genuinely two footed and can finish penalties with either his left or right foot

It's a trait that hasn't gone unnoticed at Carrington.

Speaking on Soccer AM this year, team-mate Luke Shaw was effusive in his praise of the rarest of abilities.

'Mason is a joke, he uses both feet,' said the full back. 'Sometimes he'll take a free kick with his right, then a corner with his left and like with penalties the other day [against Tranmere in the FA Cup]... he takes them with whatever foot he feels like that day, whatever he feels like doing.

'And he's so composed and confident in that, he can use both and you wouldn't know which foot he is. When he first came into training and he was doing that, the lads were like "what's this guy doing?"

'None of us really knew and we were obviously shocked and it just shows the ability he has. He's still so young, he's got so much to learn and he can do everything.'

Luke Shaw has been effusive in his praise of Greenwood and his ability to use both feet. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant that Greenwood will eventually become a United regular. While he has impressed, Solskjaer believes Greenwood should be focusing on his United form

His manager agrees too.

Solskjaer has been constant in his praise for the 18-year-old, describing him as United's 'best finisher'.

The stats back up that assertion. Until last weekend, only Sergio Aguero and Southampton's Danny Ings had a better minutes to goal ratio than Greenwood's one strike every 129 minutes.

The forward has bagged 11 goals in all competitions, with five of those coming in the Premier League. It is the kind of form that leaves his boss in no doubt that he will become a prominent figure at Old Trafford.

'He's grown a lot,' Solskjaer told reporters in January. 'He's physically and mentally more robust, which, of course, you expect from an 18-year-old.

'He has had more or less 12 months with us now and he's grown fantastically.

'His confidence and performances in the top games, even in the Premier League, he's done well. He's played a lot of the cup games and he's done well.

'So, we'll just keep continuing to give him more and more until he is a regular, because that will happen.'

It is the kind of form that has already brought with it musings over his international pedigree.

With England sweating on the fitness of some of their top strikers ahead of Euro 2020, Greenwood's name has been tossed into the ring when it comes to viable alternatives for this summer's tournament.

It is an indication of how far the teenager has come, but as a former United striker with a wealth of experience Solskjaer is well placed to warn that the club's next star still has plenty of room for improvement before bigger stages beckon.

'I think Mason will have a top and long career,' he said back in January.

'Let the boy settle in now first before we talk about England and the Euros. His focus has to be on playing more for us, improving and when he plays more for us that'll happen by itself.'

Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

WHY GREENWOOD'S STATS ARE ASTOUNDING

To many, Mason Greenwood’s fine season, so far, will come as no surprise.

The ambipedal forward was nothing short of a phenom in the Academy last season, being directly involved in 1.3 goals per game across all age groups and winning the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young-Player-of-the-Year award.

There are a plethora of Reds across the globe who follow the youth teams closely and will have foreseen Greenwood’s explosive start to life in the first team. Let’s be clear, though, the numbers that Mason put up this season are absolutely astounding.

First, let’s talk about the UEFA Europa League – in which Greenwood has played 460 minutes, the third-highest of any outfield player at the club. The European stage has been a big part of the forward’s campaign, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making the youngster a mainstay in the competition, despite the team’s depth up front.

He’s the top-scoring teenager in the tournament with five goals, meaning that he has averaged a goal every 92 minutes in continental games. Quite incredibly, those five goals come despite the young forward’s expected goals (xG) standing at 1.7, which highlights just how clinical he is in front of goal.

Greenwood was credited with an assist for Anthony Martial’s goal in the home clash against Partizan Belgrade, after his intense pressing led to the Frenchman receiving the ball to score - ultimately meaning the teen star has averaged a goal or assist every 77 minutes in the Europa League this season.

To be good enough to force yourself into the squad at 18 is one thing, but creating a goal every 77 minutes is, frankly, frightening. As well as becoming United's youngest-ever scorer in European competitions, Greenwood beat George Best, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney to become the youngest player in the club’s history to score five in continental encounters. Esteemed company indeed!

Now, let’s talk about the Premier League, another competition in which Mason has played a key role this season. Greenwood has racked up 648 league minutes so far this term and has been introduced from the bench more than any other player in the division.

His five strikes in the competition put him on an impressive average of a goal every 130 minutes. Again, he is significantly over-performing in terms of xG (2.1 expected goals per game, based on data analysing his shooting positons).

Unsurprisingly, he is also the top-scoring teenager in the league. To put his top-level output in a slightly wider historical context, Greenwood is averaging 0.70 goals per 90 this season - which he started as a 17 year-old. Raheem Sterling (0.21), Wayne Rooney (0.52) and Michael Owen (0.54) were all way below that kind of strike-rate in their equivalent league seasons.

What’s perhaps most striking about his numbers in the Premier League, though, is the volume of shots from inside the area that he produces. Decision making, in terms of knowing when is best to shoot, is usually something that comes later for young forwards - that's what really sets Greenwood apart from the rest. His 1.7 penalty-area shots per 90 minutes is equal to Martial, Rashford, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane.

For further context, the league’s leading scorer, Jamie Vardy, averages a comparable 1.9 penalty-area shots per 90 minutes. As well as having that smart decision making and ability to find high-quality opportunities, Greenwood’s exceptional finishing makes him a real threat from range - with only seven players from across Europe’s top-five leagues scoring more from outside the box than him, despite his relatively limited minutes.

In fact, the Yorkshire-born prospect has a comparable conversion rate from outside of the penalty area (14 per cent) with Europe’s best long-range shooter, Lionel Messi (16 per cent). No player with fewer than 1,000 league minutes this season has scored more goals from range than the Reds youngster. Quantity and quality, regardless of distance.

It’s also worth talking about the nature of some of those goals. His first league strike came against Sheffield United, getting on the end of a good ball from Rashford to make it 2-2. Similarly, his smartly disguised finish against Everton in December put the Reds back on level terms.

He also broke the deadlock during a Carabao Cup clash against Rochdale, earlier in the season. Seemingly, he isn’t fazed by pressure, which bodes very well for the future.

It isn’t just goals that the youngster has contributed, though. Greenwood has averaged 0.69 final-third tackles per 90 minutes, ranking him second in terms of forwards with 600+ league minutes this season. That’s testament to the forward's willingness to work hard off the ball and press, which is clearly a characteristic that Solskjaer and his staff value highly.

He has also only been dispossessed 1.4 times per 90 minutes, despite his volume of high-risk actions, mostly cutting in from the right and looking to beat a man and shoot.

Put the goalscoring ability aside and you’re still left with a very well-rounded young footballer. Consider the ability to find the back of the net too and you’re looking at a potential superstar in the making, even if he is still in the early stages of his senior career.

Greenwood Bisa Jadi 'The Next Van Persie'
Putra Rusdi K - detikSport

'To this day I don't know what foot he is': Jesse Lingard marvels at Manchester United prodigy Mason Greenwood and says striker is learning the game 'at a rapid rate'

* Mason Greenwood is making his mark as a Manchester United first-team player
* Greenwood has scored 12 goals in 36 appearances for the club so far this season
* He has the rare ability of being ambidextrous - equally good with both feet

Jesse Lingard has lavished praise on his Manchester United team-mate Mason Greenwood - noting his 'rapid' development as a first-team footballer.

Greenwood is enjoying a brilliant breakthrough year at Old Trafford, scoring 12 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Despite being only 18, the forward's displays have shown a maturity beyond his years. This is coupled with the fact he has the rare ability of being ambidextrous - equally good with either foot - as evidenced by the goals he has scored so far.

Mason Greenwood has been hailed by Manchester United team-mate Jesse Lingard. Greenwood coolly steps up to convert a penalty with his right foot against Tranmere in January

Against Watford in February, Greenwood scored this stunning effort with his left foot

Most of his goals have come via his left boot, but against Tranmere in the FA Cup in January he stepped up to score a penalty with his right foot.

'He knows the game of football, he shoots right to left foot. Still to this day I don’t know what foot he is,' Lingard told the Football Show on Sky Sports.

'He can score free-kicks with his left, take corners with his right.

'When he has been given the opportunity, he shows what he can do.

'It doesn’t matter about age, as long as you can perform on the day, and do the job for the team, you’ll be in the team. He is learning at a rapid rate at the moment.'

And Lingard also revealed that off the pitch the teenager can hold his own too - calling him one of the club's chief pranksters.

'Mason, he is a cheeky chappy. He is a good lad, holds his own in the changing room, holds his banter,' he added.

GREENWOOD TOPS PREMIER LEAGUE SHOOTING CHART

We all know how dangerous Mason Greenwood is whenever he gets anywhere near the opposition goal.

There is a sense of expectation as the teenager tries to work himself into a shooting position as we know he is capable of firing with precision and power with either foot.

The stats for the Premier League campaign so far illustrate just how effective the homegrown Red really is.

Greenwood has hit the target with 57.1 per cent of his shots this term, which is a remarkable figure for somebody who had only made one appearance in the division before 2019/20 got under way.

Indeed, it is better than anybody else in the Premier League as a whole, based on those who meet the minimum requirement (an average of .395 shots per squad game) and feature in the overall table on FBREF.com's website.

Not including penalties, it is a fair portrayal of just how accurate each player is in the top flight.

Chelsea full-back Emerson Palmieri is in second spot, with Leicester City marksman Jamie Vardy managing an impressive third place, considering he has had 57 shots in total (compared to Mason's 21 and Emerson's 13).

Wolves' enterprising wing-back Matt Doherty and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud make up the top five on the leaderboard.

Anthony Martial is the next-best Red, in 13th position overall, with a record of 47.5 per cent of his 59 shots finding the target.

For the record, Odion Ighalo has a 50% accuracy rating but has only had four shots on target in his limited time in the Premier League. The Nigerian has an incredibly high rate of shots per 90 minutes since joining the club in January (an average of 10.59) and looks certain to get more chances in the season run-in.

Luke Shaw (eight shots) and Phil Jones (two) have also managed to get half of their attempts on target this term.

'He's ridiculous... I'm like, "What's wrong with you?!"': Manchester United coach Quinton Fortune says Mason Greenwood's superb displays in training left him blown away... as he lauds his ability with both feet

* Mason Greenwood's training performances left one United coach dumbfounded
* Quinton Fortune admits he was staggered by the starlet's ability with both feet
* He revealed how he asked the striker 'are you okay?' after watching him play

Manchester United coach Quinton Fortune admits he was so shocked by the quality of Mason Greenwood's play in training that he asked him, 'what's wrong with you?'

The 18-year-old is set for a bright future at Old Trafford, and while most coaches at the club will be well aware of his talent, former Red Devils star Fortune - who works with the U23 side - says the way the youngster plays leaves him floored.

He singled out how comfortable the forward is with both his left and right foot and believes Greenwood is a rare breed.

Mason Greenwood's training ground displays have left one Man United coach staggered. U23 coach Quinton Fortune, right, called Greenwood 'ridiculous' and 'an unbelievable finisher'

'There's not many players in world football that are able to go both ways like Mason does. Equally, left and right foot, he's ridiculous,' he told the UTD podcast.

'I thought he was left-footed and then he takes penalties with his right! And I've seen him take a free-kick with his right foot, his left foot.

'I'm like 'what's wrong with you?! Just pick one! Are you okay?'

The 43-year-old nearly ran out of superlatives for the United academy prospect, who he has worked closely with in the youth teams and told of how he would sometimes look back at his performances with the analyst teams in a bid to improve.

Fortune, who played for the club for seven years, went on to call him 'a natural' and 'the real deal'.

The former United star said there weren't many players like Greenwood in world football. The former United star said there weren't many players like Greenwood in world football

'This is how amazing Mason is and why he's a little bit different,' he said.

'I'm walking through the building at the Aon Training Complex and there's a computer room where the analyst team work.

'Mason was in there, looking at games and how he can do better. He's on it. He's just a natural. He's an unbelievable finisher. He's the real deal.'

There are high hopes that Greenwood can become the latest superstar to emerge at United

Many eyebrows were raised last summer when Romelu Lukaku was sold to Inter Milan with no replacement brought in, as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to keep faith in Rashford with Greenwood as understudy.

The youngster has chipped in with five league goals and has 12 strikes in all competitions - including five in seven in the Europa League.

There are hopes from the club he can go on to the become the next big thing and Solskjaer recently said the star is 'looking more and more like a man' after stepping things up during lockdown.

Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

Sir Alex Ferguson was right (again) when he hyped up Mason Greenwood... the whole world will soon know the Manchester United striker's name after he shone once more against Brighton

* Mason Greenwood scored Man United's opener as they overcame Brighton 3-0
* The youngster shone for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side at the Amex on Tuesday
* It will not be long before the whole world knows the United striker's name
* It is a while since we have seen such a natural looking young English goal scorer

It was at a League Managers' Association lunch three or four years ago that Sir Alex Ferguson first mentioned Mason Greenwood's name to those at his table. 'I think we have found one,' said Ferguson.

The way Greenwood's career trajectory has gone over the last 12 months, it will not be long before the whole world knows his name.

Marcus Rashford's introduction at United in 2016 was notable. He scored twice on his debut in the Europa League. But Rashford's progress, at least the speed of it, from that point surprised people a little. The pre-season before he arrived in the first team, he wasn't even taken on the club's pre-season tour by manager Louis van Gaal.

Mason Greenwood shone for Manchester United as they easily beat Brighton 3-0 on Tuesday. The United youngster scored the opening goal of the night against Brighton in Premier League

Greenwood is different. His star has been burning so brightly just below first-team level for so long that the rate at which he has shot to prominence over the last year or so has shocked absolutely nobody.

It is early in the 18-year-old's career to make rash predictions. Things can get in the way. But it is a while since we have seen such a natural looking young English goal scorer. No wonder England manager Gareth Southgate is interested already.

In scoring his team's first goal at the Amex on Tuesday night, we saw most of what we need to know about Greenwood. Already much of what he does is recognisable. He has habits and they tend to be good ones.

A lot of his 13 goals - six in the Premier League - this season have looked a little like this one. A direct run, a shot taken early. So many of this teenager's shots are struck along the ground. So many creep in by the foot of a post by just a couple of inches. It cannot be coincidence.

Confidence means so much to a forward - Rashford seems short at the moment, for example - and Greenwood seems to have been born with it. Already at Old Trafford they say he reminds them of Robin van Persie in terms of the way he backs up defenders with straight direct running towards goal. If that sounds like a burden for a young player, it doesn't seem to show. He has a habit of shooting through defenders legs, too, and his manager used to be quite good at that.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Greenwood's progress is fundamental to his team's improving fortunes. The way the attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes has impacted on United's play has been much discussed but currently Solskjaer's line-up has a front three that carries a threat too.

It will be some while before Anthony Martial can be trusted fully. The Frenchman came in to this game off a hat-trick and has talent. But he is inconsistent and goes missing when the team is struggling. When Solskjaer warned before the game that his forwards should take nothing for granted, it may be Martial who has most to lose in the long run.

Rashford, meanwhile, must improve his goal return. He is still only 22 and does not currently look match fit after a period of injury. Nevertheless, improvement will still need to come if he is to be a regular United player for the peak years of his career.

It has been a while since we have seen such a natural looking young English goal scorer. It will not be long before the whole of the football world knows the 18-year-old's name. Sir Alex Ferguson was right when he hyped up Greenwood three or four years ago

He is part of a confident United side at the moment and that will help. Many more games against opposition as compliant as Brighton and that won't change.

Brighton are the only team at the bottom of the table to have resumed their season with any kind of positivity, having beaten Arsenal at home and drawn at Leicester.

But Graham Potter's team were awful here. Having argued so strongly against the proposed use of neutral venues during the lockdown, Brighton did not look like the home team. Passive and lacking energy from the first minute, the only signs of improvement they showed came in the early minutes of the second half.

That momentum was soon halted by a third United goal and Greenwood was involved in that, too. His lofted cross to Fernandes at the back post was superbly played.

It seems Ferguson was right all those years ago. He usually was.

'He's a special talent': Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails youngster Mason Greenwood after shining in emphatic win over Brighton

* Manchester United emphatically overcame Brighton 3-0 in the Premier League
* Mason Greenwood opened the scoring at the Amex Stadium with a clinical finish
* Bruno Fernandes then struck twice as United continued their excellent form
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sung the praises of Greenwood following the final whistle

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Mason Greenwood for special praise after the Manchester United teenager helped put Brighton to the sword.

The 18-year-old opened the scoring at the Amex Stadium before teeing up Bruno Fernandes for the second of two fine goals as United ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

The victory means Solskjaer's side have taken seven points from nine since the Premier League restarted and the boss was pleased with what he saw from Greenwood in particular.

'He's getting better,' said Solskjaer. 'You can see clearly that he's maturing and improving, he's only 18 still so we will see more from him.

'I've said it throughout the year that, as long as we can get him faced up in and around the box, he'll create chances for us.

'But in this game his hold-up play and his link-up play and general movement was fantastic as well.

'He's a special talent, a special kid that we are going to look after, try to develop into a top, top player. He's doing well now, but he is still young and has things to learn.

'He knows that but we have a special talent there we have to nurture.'

Greenwood skipped in off the right to break the deadlock with a sharp left-footed finish before Fernandes struck on half-hour and took the game away from Brighton with an emphatic third.

And the win means United are unbeaten in 15 games across all competitions.

Solskjaer, though, wants to see further progression before being satisfied with the current run.

'We're too far behind to be on the road to something special because special for this club is not where we are,' he added. 'But the team is improving, we're in with a shout for the Champions League next year and we still have the FA Cup and Europa League to play.

'The team is improving, the players are coming back and the style is better.'

Brighton rallied late on and forced David De Gea into a couple of good saves, but they were surprisingly off-colour from the start.

Manager Graham Potter was keen to see some positives, saying. 'I thought our response was really good, the collective attitude to stay in the game.

'They really test you from a defensive perspective. In the second half we actually started well, but the third goal was on the transition and that killed the game.

'We probably found it too hard in the first half but there were positives in the second half and we can move forward.'

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood dedicates goal at Brighton to Angel Gomes - who left the club this week when his contract expired - with 18-year-old's latest strike meaning he has more goals than Marcus Rashford did at 19

Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood dedicated his goal against Brighton on Tuesday to outgoing academy graduate Angel Gomes.

The 18-year-old netted the opening goal in the Red Devils' 3-0 win at the Amex Stadium, brandishing an 'A' sign as a tribute to his friend Angel as he wheeled away in celebration.

Gomes, 19, will leave the club on Wednesday and become a free agent after rejecting a £30,000-a-week new deal at Old Trafford.

Greenwood appeared to promise to dedicate the goal to Gomes, with the young forward tweeting after the game: 'A promise is a promise 'A' @angelgomes47'.

And the young midfielder appreciated Greenwood's tribute, posting on his Instagram story: 'No words! I love you bro, special special player, thanks for the dedicated goal @masongreenwood'.

Greenwood and Gomes are close friends having both come through United's academy structure in their teenage years.

Gomes was once billed a future Manchester United first-team regular having impressed for the club's youth teams in recent years.

But the 19-year-old will instead leave Old Trafford having made only ten appearances in all competitions in United colours, the majority of which have come this season.

Greenwood, meanwhile, will carry on being a regular member of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's first-team squad, and his strike at Brighton means he has more Manchester United goals than Marcus Rashford did before turning 19.

The 18-year-old winger now has 13 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, while Rashford only mustered 12 before his 19th birthday in October 2017.

Rashford has since gone on to score 64 goals in 204 first-team appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.

Speaking about Greenwood after the Brighton win, United boss Solskjaer said: 'He played fantastically.

'He's a special kid, we know when he gets faced up and looking he looks dangerous. His hold-up and link up play was great today.

'He can go inside or outside, he is developing into a fine player. He's just as good with his right foot and his left.'

Gomes, meanwhile, has been linked to several of Europe's top clubs, including United's top-four rivals Chelsea.

However, Blues head coach Frank Lampard played down the rumours linking Chelsea to snapping up free agent Gomes.

Lampard said: 'I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end.'
