Wesley Sneijder Confirms Man United Made £17m Bid and that He Wanted Old Trafford Switch

Dutch playmaker discusses unsuccessful attempt by Old Trafford side to acquire his services.

New Galatasaray signing Wesley Sneijder has spoken publicly about his failed move to Man United in a recent interview with Turkish source Fanatik.

The 28 year old Dutchman, who had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford for the best part of 18 months, claims that though he was interested in a move to join the Premier League side the San Siro outfit turned down their advances.

Sneijder stated;

“Manchester United had offered €20m for me and the club rejected it,”

“I wanted to go to United but Inter didn’t let me.”

Inter Milan are then said to have asked the former Ajax and Real Madrid midfielder to accept a new contract which included a reduced pay packet, Sneijder refused.

This led to a prolonged period where the former Champions League winner was forced out of the first team and eventually to a move to Turkey, for a fee far lower than Man United’s initial offer.

It would appear that the passage of time between Sir Alex Ferguson’s initial offer and Sneijder moving to Galatasaray resulted in the Scot opting to not pursue a move for bring in the creative midfielder, this despite the Man United boss clearly being interested in the player and being well aware of the individual’s interest in a move to the Premier League table toppers.

Sneijder moved to Galatasaray on January 20th in a £6.8m deal and has played three times for the Istanbul side thus far.

Why Manchester United should target Netherlands and Galatasaray star Wesley Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder has opened the door to a possible move to Man United, and with the Dutchman forever being linked with Man United, we consider should Man United have another look at the playmaker.

Sneijder was lambasted by many last season for his form in Turkey, he was dubbed the main man for his national side this summer. He has failed to build on the hype that surrounded him during his time in Italy and while he most certainly lost a bit of edge to his game, Sneijder is still deemed as one of the finest midfield orchestrator in Europe – rightly so.

He was a vital mainstay in the Galatasaray side last season, particularly in the Champions League. Making seven appearances, Sneijder netted two goals and created a brilliant 11 chances for the Turkish giants. Despite predominately occupying the number 10 role, with age, Sneijder has become slightly more versatile and that is evident in the areas he created those chances last season.

Just under half (45.5%) of the chances he created were from the left-hand side, with the rest coming through the heart of the midfield. His presence and creativity in the middle of the park will fill a gaping void in the current Manchester United side and fill a gap which has been in dire need of quality in recent seasons.

Wesley Sneijder Chances Created In Champions League Last Seasobn

While many point insist Sneijder has lost it as he is plying his trade in Turkey, rather than a bigger European side, he has proven he still has the weapons in his armoury and on the biggest stage of all – the World Cup – he has proven he is still the midfield metronome he once was.

With Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie stealing the plaudits, Sneijder has gone about his work efficiently and stayed under the radar. He has created five chances in the opening two games – registering one asisst.

Wesley Sneijder Chances Created – In World Cup

While he is renowned for his passing attributes and that asset is particularly what Sneijder prides himself on, he has a pass accuracy of 77% in the tournament this season – perhaps not his greatest moments.

Six of the 19 balls he has misplaced have been long balls, which is perhaps evidence of his attempts to dictate the tempo of the game. Switching the ball from left to right, Sneijder’s range is phenomenal and he has come unstuck in unfortunate circumstances and it is not something van Gaal will be paying attention to.

Wesley Sneijder Passes During World Cup

He proved against the Spanish he still has it and after Netherlands tore apart the reigning champions, it was the Galatasaray man who played a big part in allowing that to happen.

He won 60% of his duels in that game and had an astute pass accuracy of 80% – misplacing six passes. He created three chances and registered the one assist – his only of the tournament so far.

He has proven he still has the credentials at the highest level and Sneijder has done well to acclimatise to tougher opponents then what he has faced throughout the last 12 months.

With Manchester United’s lacklustre midfield in desperate need of reinforcements, the Netherlands’ midfield talisman could prove a quality acquisition.
