Ferguson keeps Marseille focus
United boss thinking of Marseille challenge not Barca



Sir Alex Ferguson insists he does not fear Barcelona but he is keeping his focus on Marseille.

Manchester United take on the French champions at Old Trafford on Tuesday with a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at stake.

Barcelona could be potential opponents in the last eight but Ferguson is instead focusing on beating Didier Deschamps' side given the tie is delicately poised after a goalless stalemate in the Stade Velodrome.

The Red Devils boss told The People: "Barcelona have produced two performances this season against Real Madrid and Arsenal in the Nou Camp that have captured everyone's imagination and attention and I think every coach will be paying attention to that in particular.

"We have plenty of experience of playing Barcelona because we have faced them a few times at United and I think they know we would be competitive and would have a chance against them.

"Sometimes you can put the fear of death into your players, sometimes when there is no need to and the important thing is to know what your own strength is and we know what we are good at.

"But it's too early to be thinking of playing Barcelona. We're not there yet and it's no good saying you want to avoid this or that, we've got Marseille to worry about first and that's where all our attention will be on Tuesday.

Shocking match

"The first game was a terrible game, a shocking match. I enjoyed the atmosphere in the Velodrome but I didn't enjoy the game and it will be a better one on Tuesday I am sure.

"They'll be planning on how they're going to score a goal and I think they'll try to start the game very quickly, that's a certainty, and we have to be prepared for that part.

"But as the game unfolds, you hope you take your opportunities.

"I went to watch Marseille play in Rennes - who are second in the league - on Friday night to get a better idea of how they play away from home and we've also seen them play at Monaco so we've done our homework."

Ferguson is demanding a strong defensive display on Tuesday as his side, who beat Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday, seek to further bounce back from the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool last Sunday.

He added: "The name of the game is to win and I'd be quite happy if it's 4-3 or 1-0.

"We defended well in Marseille and that will be the key again. That's going to be the main element in all of the big games now and after the disappointment of our defending at Liverpool hopefully we'll react that way."

Siapkan Duo Veteran Jamu Marseille

SIR Alex Ferguson selalu punya cara untuk keluar dari tekanan. Saat badai cedera melanda timnya, Fergie, julukan Ferguson, memasang tujuh pemain bertahan saat bersua Arsenal di perempat final Piala FA, Minggu, 13 Maret dini hari Wita. Hasilnya, United menang 2-0 dan memastikan satu tempat di semifinal.

Dengan cedera yang menimpa Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, dan Anderson, manajer asal Skotlandia tersebut mendorong Wayne Rooney di samping Darron Gibson untuk mendukung John O'Shea.

Dengan lima gelandang, lini tengah United makin solid. Rooney memang dipaksa bekerja keras, ikut membantu pertahanan dan tetap sebagai tumpuan saat menyerang. Hasilnya, satu gol disumbangkan striker bengal tersebut.

Ternyata Fergie punya alasan lain untuk menerapkan strategi tersebut. Dia masih menghemat tenaga sejumlah pemain senior untuk menjamu Olimpique Marseille di second leg 16 Besar Liga Champions, Rabu, 15 Maret dini hari Wita.

“Saya tak mungkin mengambil risiko memainkan pemain senior seperti (Ryan) Giggs dan Paul (Scholes). Tenaga keduanya sangat kami butuhkan untuk Liga Champions,” ujar Fergie seperti dikutip Goal.

Pada laga kemarin Giggs hanya dimainkan selama 28 menit. Sementara jatah untuk Scholes hanya 10 menit.

Fergie juga mulai tenang dengan kembalinya Jonny Evans dalam latihan. Dia disiapkan melapis Wes Brown dan John O’Shea di pertahanan. (ilo)

Fergie tells United to respect Marseille

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United stars that it won't be easy to kill off Marseille in the Champions League last 16 second leg on Tuesday.

Ferguson's side got their spluttering season back on track with a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, but the Gunners created enough chances to suggest all is not completely well with United just yet.

There is no margin for error at Old Trafford on Tuesday as the Premier League leaders will be eliminated from Europe's elite club competition if Marseille can secure a score draw, following the goalless first leg in the south of France.

Ferguson knows Didier Deschamps' team possess a sharp enough attack to pierce United's occasionally careless defence and snatch a priceless away goal.

United crashed against Bayern Munich on away goals in the last eight last season and Ferguson, fearing a repeat, was sufficiently concerned to fly to France on Friday to watch Marseille's 2-0 win at Rennes.

He returned to tell his players not to under-estimate the size of the task facing them.

"The first leg was a terrible game, a shocking match," he said. "It will be a better game on Tuesday.

"Marseille will be planning on how they're going to score a goal and I think they'll try to start the game very quickly -that's a certainty - and we have to be prepared for that.

"It will be important to defend well. All the big games will be that way for us now."

Reports on Sunday that Ferguson will consider selling Wayne Rooney in the close-season as a result of his strained relationship with the striker will quickly be forgotten if he reproduces the kind of dynamic display that helped vanquish Arsenal.

Rooney came close to quitting Old Trafford after handing in a transfer request earlier this season before eventually signing a new contract.

His form since then has fluctuated dramatically, with occasional highs marred by too many lacklustre performances.

But, used in a variety of roles against Arsenal, Rooney showed why he remains so valuable to United and Ferguson said: "He did a great job for us. Centre midfield in the first half, second half he could have scored maybe a hat-trick really.

"He took his goal well, he's continued his great record against Arsenal, scoring-wise. I think Wayne, and all the rest, earned their corn."

With Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick all injured, Ferguson will keep faith with young defender Chris Smalling and recall Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs after resting the veteran midfielders on Saturday.

Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia, back after six months out with a broken leg, could also feature and Nani may make a surprise return following his recent injury against Liverpool.

The slightly uncertain nature of Ferguson's selection should encourage Marseille to believe they can claim a famous scalp.

Under Deschamps' astute leadership, Marseille finally lived up to their billing as France's biggest club by winning their first league title in 18 years last season.

Deschamps certainly has the pedigree to worry United -- in 23 European Cup and Champions League meetings with British clubs as a player and coach, the Frenchman has tasted defeat just five times.

However, Marseille's chances will be dented by the absence of Brazilian striker Brandao, who incurred Deschamps' wrath after he was placed under formal police investigation on suspicion of a sexual assault.

Brandao is on bail and will not travel to Manchester after being left out of the Rennes match.

Instead Deschamps will need an influential display from playmaker Mathieu Valbuena, who recently returned after four weeks out with a knee injury.

"Many people said we would collapse, but we're still here, with our qualities and our flaws," Deschamps said
