Default Raphael Varane

Manchester United 'are close to agreeing personal terms with Raphael Varane' and a deal for the Real Madrid defender could be concluded 'within weeks' as France star takes a break following Euro 2020

* Manchester United are close to agreeing personal terms with Raphael Varane
* The France international has been a long-term transfer target for the Red Devils
* The Real Madrid defender has just one year remaining on his current contract
* United believe the 27-year-old could be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire
* However, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain

Manchester United are 'not far off' agreeing personal terms with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The France international has been a long-term target for Manchester United and could head to Old Trafford for the 2021-2022 season after Real admitted they would be willing to sanction his exit.

Should United push a deal over the line in the next few weeks, it is believed Varane will head straight to Manchester after his holiday, which followed France's exit from the European Championship.

According to the Manchester Evening News, negations between the two parties have been described as 'pretty slow', but United remain hopeful of securing Varane's signature.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be preparing a £50million package to lure the 28-year-old to Manchester this summer.

However, the LaLiga giants may hold out for a better offer after valuing their star defender at £80m. They might struggle to raise that figure, however, with Varane's contract due to expire next summer.

Man United are 'not far off' agreeing personal terms with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. The France international has been a long-term transfer target for the Red Devils. United see him as reliable partner to captain Harry Maguire at centre-back

Defence has been an area that United have been looking to bolster, with Solskjaer seeking a reliable partner to captain Harry Maguire at centre-back.

Varane has established himself as United's primary target given his credentials - four Champions League titles and the World Cup.

The 28-year-old also rejected Madrid's offer of a new deal, with the player reportedly unhappy that Real chose to negotiate with Luka Modric, Lucas Vazquez and Sergio Ramos ahead of him.

Therefore, the wantaway defender could snap up Manchester United's offer or entertain talks with Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid 'still waiting to hear from Raphael Varane about whether he will sign their latest contract offer'... boosting Manchester United's pursuit of France defender

* Raphael Varane has been strongly linked with a Real Madrid exit this summer
* The French defender has only one year left on his contract with the LaLiga giants
* Real are reportedly still waiting on whether Varane will sign a new contract
* Varane has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer

Real Madrid are reportedly yet to hear back from Raphael Varane about their latest contract offer, as the French defender continues to be linked to Manchester United and Chelsea.

The French defender has now entered the final year of his contract and Los Blancos need to either sell him this summer or run the risk of losing him on a free.

Real do not want to lose another top-class defender this summer after club captain Sergio Ramos quit the club for Paris Saint-Germain, with the potential loss of Varane leaving new signing David Alaba, Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez as centre-back options.

And according to Marca, Varane is yet to respond to Real's offer of a new deal and is set to be targeted by Chelsea and Manchester United this summer.

Sportsmail revealed this week that United are expected to make an opening offer for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after being assured the France international wants to come to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Marca also reported this week that United are close to signing both Varane and Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier, with both deals in the final stages of negotiations.

Raphael Varane is yet to respond to Real Madrid's offer of a new contract, according to reports. Varane has been strongly linked with switching Carlo Ancelotti's men for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United. Marca claim Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race for Varane's signature

Varane has been at Real for a decade, winning three LaLiga titles, four Champions League trophies and four FIFA Club World Cups with the Spanish giants, who he has played 359 times for since his debut.

The France international is yet to return to pre-season for the LaLiga giants, who are now managed by former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti after Zinedine Zidane's departure at the end of last season.

Varane is coming back late to Real training due to his efforts for France at Euro 2020 this summer, which saw Les Bleus go out at the last-16 stage following their defeat by Switzerland on penalties.

A move to Old Trafford would see him compete with the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof for a starting spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who finished 12 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City this term.

Signing Varane would be a strong signal of intent that they are prepared to close the gap on their city rivals, with the £73m signing of Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho set to be confirmed this week.

Meanwhile, Chelsea could be looking to bolster their defence this summer as well - with their centre-back options currently Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger.

Manchester United 'reach a breakthrough in Raphael Varane talks with Real Madrid as a £38.5m fee is agreed' for the France defender who could be an Old Trafford player 'by the end of the week' as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closes in

* Manchester United closing in on Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane
* Talks between the two clubs 'rapidly approaching' an agreement
* Varane could be unveiled as an Old Trafford player by the end of the week

Manchester United are closing in on the capture of Raphael Varane after agreeing a £38.5million deal with Real Madrid, according to reports in France.

Le Parisien reported a Manchester United source claiming talks were 'rapidly approaching' an agreement for the 28-year-old.

The report said the main points of a deal worth around €45m (£38.5) had been agreed by the two clubs.

Varane could be unveiled as an Old Trafford player by the end of the week.

United had reportedly already agreed terms with the France international centre-back until 2026.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to partner Varane with captain Harry Maguire in the heart of his defence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees Raphael Varane as a dream centre-back partner for Harry Maguire. The World Cup winner is closing in on a sensational move, with one year left on his contract. United boss Solskjaer is hoping Varane will be the answer to United's issues at centre-back

Solskjaer looks set for a perfect transfer window, having already solved their lack of quality on the right-wing with Jadon Sancho this summer.

Their other long-standing shortcoming was a central defender to play alongside England star Maguire, with Victor Lindelof struggling to complement the £80m man's abilities.

United are now within touching distance of providing a solution in the form of world class ability, with Goal reporting that a five-year deal has been agreed with Varane.

The World Cup winner will receive an increased wage and is keen for the Old Trafford switch, though his respect for the Spanish champions has stopped him from agitating for the move.

Madrid have already seen Sergio Ramos exit for PSG this summer and their clear out looks set to continue with a man who has played for the club since 2011.

Carlo Ancelotti's side are looking to recover funds following the Covid-19 shutdown, as they aim to build towards a Kylian Mbappe bid next summer.

Default Re: Raphael Varane

Manchester United CONFIRM they have 'agreed a deal in principle' to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid for £42m... as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's transfer window spending hits a whopping £115m after arrival of Jadon Sancho for £73m

* Manchester United have signed the coveted Raphael Varane from Real Madrid
* The 28-year-old Frenchman has joined after 10 years in the Spanish capital
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been chasing a defender to partner Harry Maguire
* Varane is United's third summer signing after Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton

Manchester United have announced that the £42million deal for Raphael Varane to join from Real Madrid is almost complete, with the Frenchman set to become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's third arrival of a sensational summer.

The 28-year-old World Cup-winning centre back has long been one of United's top targets. Varane's contract at the Bernebeu was set to expire next summer, meaning United got him for a price well below what his market value would have been 12 months previously.

On Monday the Red Devils and Madrid agreed a £42m fee, including £34m up front and £8m in add-ons, with both club and player having already struck a deal over personal terms and an announcement has followed on Tuesday night.

Manchester United are on the brink of sealing the £42m signing of Raphael Varane. The France star has all but agreed a deal with United, ending his 10-year stay at Madrid

In a short statement, the club said: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised.'

Real Madrid heaped praise on Varane for his trophy-laden decade in the Spanish capital, saying: 'Our club thanks you for your professionalism and exemplary behavior during the ten seasons in which you have defended our shirt, with which you have won 18 titles: 4 Champions League, 4 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 3 Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups.

'Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphael Varane and his family and wishes him good luck in this new stage of his professional career.'

United forward Marcus Rashford was quick to underline his excitement, taking to Twitter saying: 'Can we please stop spamming my posts now, oui oui'.

Marcus Rashford was quick to outline his excitement over Varane's impending switch

Varane returned to Madrid's training ground for pre-season medical checks this week, but travel plans were swiftly arranged as the move gathered pace. His exit ends his 10-year stay in the Spanish capital, during which he won LaLiga three times and the Champions League on four occasions.

United have capitalised on Madrid's need to raise funds this summer as they aim to build towards a Kylian Mbappe bid next year, and Solskjaer now has the defensive partner for Harry Maguire he has long sought as he continues the revolution of the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho in 2018.

Varane will have to quarantine on arrival in England before undergoing his medical and is expected to sign a four-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.

The Frenchman's arrival adds to what is becoming a very fruitful transfer window for Solskjaer, having already bolstered their attacking options with the £73m signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. Goalkeeper Tom Heaton has also signed on a free transfer.

One of United's long-standing shortcomings was a central defender to play alongside England star Maguire, with Victor Lindelof struggling to complement their £80m captain's abilities.

Sancho and Varane's arrivals are a sign of intent that United are ready to breach the gap between them and rivals Manchester City, who won the Premier League by a huge 12 points last season.

United finished second in England's top flight last term and also ended the campaign as Europa League runners-up to Villarreal - who defeated the Red Devils after a long-running penalty shootout in the Gdansk final.

The 28-year-old has been a long-term target of Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United have been in the market for a partner for Harry Maguire and Varane fits the bill. Varane's arrival adds to what has been a fruitful summer for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Varane brings much-needed experience and a colossal haul of trophies - his crowning glory being the World Cup in 2018 - as United look to finally win silverware under Solskjaer.

Madrid have already seen Sergio Ramos exit for Paris Saint-Germain this summer and their clearout looks set to continue with a man who has played for the club since 2011.

Varane is United's third signing of the summer behind Sancho and veteran goalkeeper Heaton, who moved to Old Trafford on a free from Aston Villa.

United's defensive additions could yet continue with the club preparing a move for Sevilla star Jules Kounde, and possibly Atletico Madrid and England right back Kieran Trippier - plus a midfielder.

Sportsmail understands that Varane's France team-mate has been on Solskjaer's wanted list for some time, but United will face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Spurs and Madrid for the 22-year-old.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Chelsea have stepped up and acted on their interest in Kounde.

But United are set to have to offload players - notably Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard -in order to continue their summer spree, with the club eyeing up a net spend of between £75million to £100m, according to the Telegraph.

United are under pressure to sell Pogba with Paris Saint-Germain holding strong interest in their star midfielder. Sportsmail has recently reported that Mino Raiola is discussing personal terms with the club.

Although Pogba would still command a hefty price tag, it is understood that PSG believe they can sign the former Juventus man around £43million, less than half the figure United had paid back in 2016.

Despite having just one year left on his £290,000-a-week- contract, Pogba has given United no indications that he is interested in committing his future at Old Trafford. This could see the club cut their losses.

Sportsmail revealed that Saul Niguez, a team-mate of Trippier's at Atletico, is a potential replacement for Pogba. Atletico are keen to axe him from their wage bill, and may accept an offer of just £45m.

Lingard, meanwhile, also faces an uncertain future. He spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham and impressed, having scored nine goals in 16 appearances, and looks to be in United's short-term plans.

The playmaker is another that would command a reasonable sum, and allow United to try and land more signings. Lingard is also in the final year of his deal, and is valued at around £30m with multiple clubs keen to swoop.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said on his 'Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE' Youtube channel that he believes Varane would have tried to force his own move through.

Ferdinand said: 'What a signing. There's been talk in the transfer market since it opened up - it must have come from the player.

'He must have wanted to leave, and be part of the new Man United way, the project that's going ahead.

'With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signing a new deal, Sancho coming in - the talent they've got there, the ability to play alongside (Harry) Maguire after he did so well at the Euros probably played a part. I just think he sees this as a better project than what he's got at Real Madrid now.

'When you watch him sometimes he almost purrs, he's got that pace, that poise. We've signed a genuine world-class centre back. His list of honours is ridiculous, it's as long as my arm.

'It's a great job by the (recruitment) people at Manchester United. United have been criticised in the past, and rightly so, for dilly-dallying in the market.

'This one they were assertive, they went for their man and they got him. No doubt in my mind, he would have said to Real Madrid 'I need it, I want it, I have to go.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails 'proven winner' Raphael Varane as his £42m switch from Real Madrid to Manchester United edges closer and admits Sir Alex Ferguson was 'very close to signing him' for the club

* Raphael Varane is close to joining Manchester United from Real Madrid
* The centre-back will cost around £42m and has been hailed by his new boss
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called him a 'proven winner' who they have long admired
* He hopes the deal can be completed quickly and praised the club's ambition

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he 'cannot wait' to sign 'proven winner' Raphael Varane from Real Madrid as the Frenchman's £42million switch to Old Trafford nears completion.

The Red Devils have been pursuing a deal for the highly rated centre back all summer and are close to getting their man in a move that will see him join another high profile signing in Jadon Sancho.

Solskjaer is delighted with the club's ambition this season and feels both Varane and Sancho will make 'a huge difference' to the team, saying the former had been a player United had been tracking from the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The France World Cup winner has agreed personal terms on a four-year deal with the option of another season, with the contract to be signed after he completes his medical following quarantine.

'Of course very happy that we've managed to get a deal with Real Madrid,' Solskjaer said.

'The medical should hopefully be OK and he's a proven winner. He's a player we've followed for many, many years.

'I know Sir Alex (Ferguson) was very, very close to signing him, so this time around we've got him at the other end of his career.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is excited to bring 'proven winner' Raphael Varane to Man United. The Real Madrid centre-back is close to joining in a £42m deal and is set to have a medical. Solskjaer believes the club are showing big ambition after also snapping up Jadon Sancho. He suggested the team could change their style to adapt both players next season

'He's proved over his whole career what a good person he is first of all, professional and he's won what there is to win. I'm very happy getting both our players in.'

Solskjaer, whose side suffered a disappointing loss in the Europa League final against Villarreal at the end of the last campaign, is looking to revamp his squad into title contenders and believes the club are showing the right mentality by making statement signings.

He also suggested the team could change its set up to accommodate both Sancho and Varane, who he hopes will seal his move soon after wrapping up his medical.

'First of all, the club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young forwards in world football and one of the most respected centre-backs in the world and one of the most winning centre-backs in the world,' he added.

'With him in of course we've got different ways of playing as well. I can see different ways of playing with Raphael. I can't wait to get him in. Hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.'

Asked about when the medical can take place with coronavirus restrictions in place, Solskjaer said: 'From what I know the club is working on the quickest possible solution to get everything sorted. I don't know the timescale on it yet, the latest.

'Of course there's a visa coming into England now with Brexit and the quarantining, so everything has to be done as quickly as possible but by the book.'

Solskjaer is pleased United are getting the bulk of their business done early and feels the two signings can have a major impact.

'I think, as I've said before, every manager would be happy the sooner and earlier the deals are done and this year we've managed to get it sorted,' Solskjaer said after Wednesday's 2-2 friendly draw against Brentford in front of 30,000 fans at Old Trafford.

'I think the two we've got in will make a huge difference for us, both this season short-term but also long-term.

'Raphael is into his prime as a centre-back. He's the same age as Harry (Maguire), a year older than Eric (Bailly) and a couple years older than Victor (Lindelof) so there I've got a fantastic group of centre-backs.

'With Jadon as well, with the young forwards we've got it's exciting. As a manager you can't ask for more backing when you've got these two in as early as we have.

'We've scrambled before towards the end of the window and now I think, I have to say, we're in a good position. Pre-season is always difficult, though, in a championship year, never mind in the pandemic with the quarantining and isolation.'

Raphael Varane to Manchester United edging ever closer! French centre back 'self-isolating before taking his medical' ahead of his £42m move being finalised... with deal 'set to be completed by middle of next week'

* Raphael Varane is one step closer to completing his more to Manchester United
* Reports say the defender's visa has been processed and that he is in Manchester
* The 28-year-old is in Manchester self-isolating before taking his United medical

Raphael Varane is one step closer to completing his move to Manchester United as reports claim the defender's visa has been processed.

The 28-year-old is also said to be in Manchester self-isolating before taking his medical with the Red Devils ahead of his £42m move to Old Trafford.

The news comes just days Varane posted a farewell message to LaLiga giants Madrid on his Instagram, and addressed his colleagues to thank them for 10 'amazing' years at the club.

The France World Cup winner has been a long-term target for the Old Trafford club and will now join some illustrious names to have represented the Spanish capital side and the Manchester outfit.

However, it will be a race against time for Varane to feature in Manchester United's opening Premier League game against Leeds United on August 14.

Nevertheless, the centre-back will be a valuable addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side - having won three LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns.

Varane effectively confirmed his move on Instagram, posting an emotional farewell message. Writing in Spanish, Varane thanked Real Madrid for '10 incredible and wonderful years'

Prior to the deal being completed, Solskjaer said: 'I know Sir Alex (Ferguson) was very, very close to signing him, so this time around we've got him at the other end of his career.

'He's proved over his whole career what a good person he is first of all, professional and he's won what there is to win.'

The signing of Varane and Jadon Sancho is a clear sign of intent from United that they are ready to breach the gap between them and rivals Man City, who won the Premier League by 12 points last season.

Raphael Varane has thanked Manchester United supporters for their warm reception at Old Trafford as the Frenchman got to work following his £42million switch from Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old completed his move from Spain to England this week, signing a four-year deal as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally landed his long-sought elite defender to partner with Harry Maguire.

And United supporters produced a superb welcome for their new defender at Old Trafford on Saturday, with the Frenchman unveiled holding his No 19 shirt before the fans ahead of United's season opener against Leeds.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United got off to a flyer with a 5-1 win over their rivals to round off a fine day as the Red Devils look to close the gap on Manchester City.

Varane has addressed United fans to thank them for their ovation, revealing he is 'very excited to be here' and 'ready to work hard'.

'Hi everyone, I am very excited to be here,' he said via the club's official Twitter account. 'Thanks for the atmosphere at Old Trafford, thank you very much.

'I am very happy to be here and I am ready to work hard.'

United fans are hopeful that Varane is the missing piece to allow United to fight for the title

The 28-year-old is expected to help shore up United's defence that has been prone to error in recent seasons, often to the detriment of Solskjaer's tilts at silverware.

Defensive errors resulted in the club's group stage exit from the Champions League, while they fell short in the Europa League in back-to-back seasons.

United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that Varane's presence will help the team deal with high pressure situations.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: 'He's played in 14 finals and won 14, so he knows exactly what he's doing. It's a big thing for Man United getting into situations when they're under pressure, they can look to this type of leader.'

At the age of 28, Varane is vastly experienced and has won the World Cup with France as well as four Champions Leagues with Real Madrid.

Varane will wear the unfamiliar No 19 shirt for United, with the No 4 shirt currently occupied by Phil Jones, who turned a deaf ear to requests to give up the number.

Varane asked United for No 4 – which he also wears for France – as their negotiations reached the later stages, but Jones flat-out refused, according to MEN.

Jones has held the No 4, formerly worn by Steve Bruce, since arriving from Blackburn in 2011, but the 29-year-old hasn't played for United in more than 18 months.

He will likely inherit Jones' shirt when United eventually managed to shift the fallen star Sir Alex Ferguson once said 'could be our greatest player ever.'

The World Cup winner also wore 19 on his back during his first season with Real Madrid in 2011 as a young talent, having joined from Lens despite interest from United boss Ferguson.

Default Re: Raphael Varane

Manchester United outcast Phil Jones 'REFUSED to let Raphael Varane have his No 4 shirt', with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's new £42m man forced to take No 19 instead on completing Real Madrid move

* Raphael Varane has completed his move to Manchester United for £42million
* The former Real Madrid man was paraded at Old Trafford before their Leeds win
* Varane wore No.4 for Los Blancos but that shirt is owned by Phil Jones at present
* Jones reportedly wouldn't give-up his beloved number, and Varane has No.19

Phil Jones turned a deaf ear to Raphael Varane's request for his No 4 shirt, reports claim, as the Old Trafford outcast was pushed further down the pecking order by the star's Manchester United move.

Varane was unveiled to his expectant new Red Devils fans ahead of kick-off on Saturday, as Bruno Fernandes and Co got the old ground rocking with a 5-1 thrashing of Leeds.

The £42m Frenchman enjoyed the perfect introduction to Manchester and is aiming to replace Victor Lindelof alongside Harry Maguire in the coming games. He is set to wear the No 19 shirt when that debut arrives.

Raphael Varane will wear No 19 when he makes his debut for Manchester United this season. Varane requested to wear No 4 at Old Trafford but Phil Jones still wants to hold the number

Varane asked United for No 4 – which he also wears for France – as their negotiations reached the late stages, but Jones flat-out refused, according to MEN.

Jones has held the No 4, formerly worn by Steve Bruce, since arriving from Blackburn in 2011, but the 29-year-old hasn't played for United in more than 18 months.

The centre-back endured a horrific 2018-19 season and was frozen-out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The club still haven't managed to drum-up interest in the player for a sale this summer, with his contract expiring in 2023.

Varane will likely inherit Jones' shirt when United eventually managed to shift the fallen star Sir Alex Ferguson once said 'could be our greatest player ever.'

Jones hasn't played for the club in more than 18 months and United want rid of the defender. Varane wore No 5 for Real Madrid, while club icon Sergio Ramos held No at the Spanish club

The French defender wears No 4 for his nation, having a disappointing summer at Euro 2020

The World Cup winner also wore 19 on his back during his first season with Real Madrid in 2011 as a young talent, having joined from Lens despite interest from United boss Ferguson.

He donned No 2 from 2012 to 2016 before finally settling on five. The No 4 shirt was reserved for Bernabeu icon Sergio Ramos during Varane's stint in Spain, and he hoped to finally wear it in England.

Varane will have been impressed by his new club on Saturday, as he watched a searing 5-1 victory inspired by Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese star struck a hat-trick while Varane's international team-mate Pogba racked-up four assists as Old Trafford welcomed back a full house of supporters.
