Javier Hernandez (Manchester United, £6m from Guadalajara)
Hands up who had watched the Mexican play before last summer's World Cup?

Such has been his impact at Manchester United that even Sir Alex Ferguson must be surprised by how easily the 22-year-old has adapted.

The striker has scored 20 goals this campaign but it's 'Chicharito's' tendency to find the back of the net when United need a goal most that has made him stand out.

None more so than the opportunistic opener after 36 seconds against Chelsea that helped effectively seal the title for United.

The fact that top scorer Dimitar Berbatov has lost his place in the side to him speaks volumes.

Darren Bent (Aston Villa, £24m from Sunderland)
Gerard Houllier's reign at Aston Villa has not been one of huge success but he must be given credit for this January swoop.

Bent has been worth every penny, scoring crucial goals in wins against Arsenal, Manchester City, West Ham and two in a draw with Everton.

Without those points Villa would be in huge trouble at the bottom and with their next best strikers Emile Heskey and Gabriel Agbonlahor on three goals each, it's hard to see how they could have stayed up without England international Bent.

Luis Suarez (Liverpool, £22.8m from Ajax)
If you listen closely you can still hear Liverpool laughing all the way to the bank after recruiting Suarez and pocketing £50m from Chelsea for Fernando Torres.

The 24-year-old Uruguay international has only scored four times for the Reds but his overall contribution has been outstanding - especially with £35m fellow new boy Andy Carroll struggling for fitness.

Suarez has formed a lethal partnership with Dirk Kuyt and the sight of a stroppy Spaniard with his hands on his hips is long gone. (Can now been seen in west London wearing blue).

Jermaine Pennant (Stoke, £2.8m from Real Zaragoza)
For a career that was in danger of going into terminal decline after poor spells at Liverpool, Portsmouth and Real Zaragoza, the turnaround in form that Pennant has produced this season has been quite remarkable.

Initially signing for Stoke on a four-month loan deal, it didn't take long for boss Tony Pulis to make the move permanent after a string of top performances on the right of midfield.

The 28-year-old's link-up with Kenwyne Jones in attack has been key in Stoke's march to the FA Cup final and a place in the Europa League.

Cheik Tiote (Newcastle, undisclosed from Twente)
One of the low-key transfers of the summer but Tiote's first season at Newcastle has been a huge success – with 42 per cent of fans voting him the club's player of the year.

Discipline has proved a problem (he is booked on average every other game) but the 24-year-old's no-nonsense tackling is complemented with some finesse and style on the ball.

Few fans will forget the Ivorian midfielder's stunning volley in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal where the Toon had been 4-0 down.

Tiote signed a new contract in February but that won't stop top clubs snooping around over the summer.

Yaya Toure (Manchester City, £28m from Barcelona)
There was no doubt that Toure was considered a fine central midfielder when he joined Manchester City last summer – but few could think of ways he could justify his enormous £205,000-a-week wages.

Ending City's 35-year wait for a trophy proved to be the answer. A masterstroke from manager Roberto Mancini was to push the 28-year-old into a more attacking role and his goals in the FA Cup semi-final and final will live long in the memory of any City fan.

His fine form throughout the season has helped City qualify for the Champions League too.

Adel Taarabt (QPR, £1m from Tottenham)
Three miserable years at Tottenham have instantly been forgotten by Taarabt, who has been the stand-out player in the Championship since moving to Loftus Road last summer.

The attacking midfielder has been a bit of an enigma in the game, failing to break into the Spurs side due to his work ethic (or lack of) but at times acting as a one-man band in QPR's canter towards the Championship title.

Many eyes will be on the 21-year-old when he turns up in the Premier League in August. The Moroccan has already proven his worth to his club, with boss Neil Warnock making him captain, but he still has doubters and only by keeping QPR in the top flight can he silence them.

Scott Sinclair (Swansea, £1m from Chelsea)
After being involved in more loan deals than your average banker, Sinclair finally found a new permanent home when he joined the Welsh outfit last summer.

After struggling to find the net on a regular basis before his move, the winger has scored 24 goals this campaign to fire the play-off finalists to within touching distance of the Premier League.

At just 22-years-old he is still learning his trade but it would take a lot more than the £1m paid to take him away from the Liberty Stadium.

Gordon Greer (Brighton, £250,000 from Swindon)
Signing from League One rivals Swindon, the defender's debut for Brighton was memorable for the all the wrong reasons. He was sent off against Rochdale having just returned from suspension.

But the Scot soon established himself in a Brighton team that would storm to the top of the table and show no signs of letting up – his presence enough to be named in the division's team of the season.

Former employers Swindon especially felt the loss of the 30-year-old at the back as they plummeted to the bottom of the league.

Craig Davies (Chesterfield, free from Brighton)
His career appeared to have stumbled to a halt on being released by Brighton last summer, but the striker hasn't looked back since signing for Chesterfield.

The 25-year-old has had by far his most prolific season to date, scoring 25 times in all competitions and helping the Spireites to the League Two title.

After finally settling at a club, the Welshman will have another crack at trying to prove himself in League One by helping the Spireites consolidate their place in England's third tier.

Bebe (Manchester United, £7.4m from Vitoria Guimaraes)

If Javier Hernandez is up there with the finest of United signings, then Bebe must also be in with a shout of being one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s worst.

Fergie had never even seen him play before agreeing a deal which didn’t help and only added more expectation on the player to become an overnight superstar.

After seven average performances mostly against lesser opposition, the Portuguese midfielder hasn’t featured since being hustled out of the game by Conference side Crawley Town in the FA Cup at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old has time to bounce back but there has been very little sign of the supposed talent that forced United to pay way over the odds.

Fernando Torres (Chelsea, £50million from Liverpool)

After an average first half of the season with Liverpool it was thought Torres’s mood and form would perk up a bit when he joined a side fighting for the title.

Instead it has got worse, just one goal against bottom side West Ham is all the striker has to show for smashing the British transfer record and rarely has he managed to have a major influence on games.

Whether the 27-year-old is played on his own, with Didier Drogba, with Nicolas Anelka or both, it just hasn’t worked and Chelsea face one hell of a job trying to find a system that is comfortable with the Spaniard.

For half of the money the Blues could have brought Darren Bent.

Christian Poulsen (Liverpool, £4.5million from Juventus)

A dream move to Liverpool has turned into a nightmare for Poulsen who has become one of the symbols of Roy Hodgson’s ill-fated reign at Anfield.

Often caught in possession, poor with his passing and ineffective in the tackle, he just couldn’t adapt to the Premier League. Once fans quickly turned on the Dane it was downhill from there.

Not even under new boss Kenny Dalglish could the 31-year-old show any type of form and he has not featured since a 1-0 defeat in Braga two months ago. Almost certain to leave the club in the summer.

Paul Konchesky (Liverpool, undisclosed from Fulham)

A crucial part of Hodgson’s Fulham team but a big misfit at Liverpool. A string of poor performances quickly made the left-back a target for irate fans up in arms over Hodgson’s tenure at Anfield, with his last game coming in a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn in January.

That’s because Kenny Dalglish then took over and decided he was so bad he would even put a right-back in his place instead – shipping the 30-year-old off to Nottingham Forest for the rest of the season.

He is unlikely to play for Liverpool again and that’s before you mention his mother’s facebook rants about the club’s fans.

Mauro Boselli (Wigan, £6m from Estudiantes)

The gamble that has backfired in a big way for Roberto Martinez. Boselli became the club record signing after arriving from Argentina with an impressive scoring record and was charged with leading Wigan’s goal-shy strike force.

But a combination of struggling to settle and a lack of form and confidence quickly made him a weak link in the team to the point that even fellow flop Franco di Santo could get a game ahead of him.

With just one Carling Cup goal to his name, Martinez lost patience and packed him off to Genoa for the rest of the season where he has scored just twice.

Stephen Ireland (Aston Villa, player exchange from Manchester City; Newcastle, loan from Aston Villa)

No one knows exactly when he walked under a ladder and broke a mirror at the same time but Ireland’s season has been a shambles from the very start.

A pawn that involved him and James Milner switching clubs, the 24-year-old’s first game for Villa was a disaster as he started in the 6-0 defeat at Newcastle. Things only got worse when Gerard Houllier took over as he was gradually frozen out of a side that failed to win a Premier League game he started.

Newcastle took him on loan until the end of the season in January but injuries have restricted him to just 49 minutes of football at St James’ Park.

Edin Dzeko (Manchester City, £27m from Wolfsburg)

Having Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and David Silva in attack wasn’t enough for City boss Roberto Mancini who decided the free-scoring Bundesliga striker was the man to fire City towards the Champions League.

And Europe’s elite is where City will be next season but that is more in spite of the Bosnian who has scored just one league goal since arriving at Eastlands – albeit a crucial winner at Blackburn.

Given the chance ahead of Balotelli or the injured Tevez, the 25-year-old has struggled to stamp his authority in attack and often finds games passing him by as if he is an innocent bystander. Needs to improve next season.

Sebastien Squillaci (Arsenal, £6.5m from Sevilla)

Out went Sol Campbell and William Gallas, in came £10m Laurent Koscielny and Squillaci. Arsenal’s defence has looked like an accident waiting to happen ever since.

Koscielny has time to improve but at 30-years-old, Squillaci should be at his best but rarely has he shown any sort of leadership qualities that Arsenal have been crying out for at the back this season.

The Frenchman is easily beaten in the air and has often been caught playing a striker onside. Hard to see him finding a place in the starting XI next term with the return of Thomas Vermaelen from injury.

Pablo Barrera (West Ham, £4m from Pumas)

After making a promising impact at the World Cup for Mexico, the Hammers looked like they had found a creative wide man in Barrera that could help spoon-feed chances for their strikers.

A speedy winger who could use both feet, the 23-year-old was tracked by Everton, Manchester United and Tottenham before arriving at Upton Park – but he soon lost all that once he put a claret and blue shirt on.

Easily marked out the game and often wayward with his final ball (if he managed to get that far), the Mexican hasn’t featured in the Premier League since January.

Robbie Keane (West Ham, loan from Tottenham)

A proven goal scorer with a handy knack of creating chances out of nothing was exactly what West Ham were looking for in January – instead they got Robbie Keane.

The Irishman has been in a decline since leaving Spurs for Liverpool in 2008 but a chance to play regular football again at Upton Park seemed to suit both parties in getting their respective seasons back on track.

Instead the 30-year-old’s high wages came at a return of injuries and a host of crucial missed chances that have not only accelerated West Ham’s down fall but have been a catalyst towards his own.
