actually he played 90 minutes, but i think Fulham got lack of consentration since they have to play againts Atletico Madrid by tomorrow, UEFA League final
agree that Fulham keeper and defender played some jokin' yesterday ....

Little more than 18 months after arriving at Fulham from non-league Maidstone, defender Chris Smalling agreed to terms that would make him a Manchester United player from 1 July 2010.

A quick, clever central defender, Smalling played cameo roles for Roy Hodgson’s Fulham in both domestic and European competitions during 2009/10. Those fleeting performances were enough to earn him call-ups at England Under-21 level, and catch the eye of United scouts who identified him as a talent too good to miss out on.

The Reds agreed terms with Fulham for Smalling’s signature in January 2010, although the
Greenwich-born defender remained at Craven Cottage for the remainder of the season.

At the time, Sir Alex described Smalling as “an extremely talented young defender who we’ve been monitoring for some months”.

“He’s very quick and reads the game well. He will be a great asset to the club, playing alongside some of the best defenders around and we’re delighted to have secured his signature.”

Smalling tipped for success with United

Chris Smalling will grow at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson's guidance, according to Bill Williams.

However Maidstone United's general manager, a former professional goalkeeper, believes the England Under-21 defender would have benefited further from another season with Fulham.

Smalling, 20, set off for Chicago with the rest of Manchester United's 22-man squad at the start of their summer tour.

It was the latest leg in a remarkable journey that has taken the player from non-league football to the top end of the Barclays Premier League inside two years.

Smalling's move to United was confirmed in January and he ended the season by making 13 league appearances for Fulham.

Williams, 67, who wore the colours of Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers and West Brom among others, said: "I had a meeting with Alex at Old Trafford and he felt he had got a little gem in Chris.

"He said he was someone with a few rough edges that needed to be smoothed off. I am sure Manchester United have the knowledge and expertise to polish him as a player."

Smalling arrived at Maidstone after leaving Millwall's academy and quickly began to realise his potential.

Williams said: "He needed the experience of playing at a different standard. He did that and has now gone through this rapid movement along the pathway.

"I have been in the game since I was 15 and seen many players come through. If I am being honest I would have liked Chris to have played 40-50 league games for Fulham before making a move.

"I feel that would have done him a power of good. He has not played enough Premier League football and United will have to be patient with him."

Smalling looks assured of a place in the United team at some stage of their five-match tour with Rio Ferdinand injured and Nemanja Vidic on holiday after playing for Serbia in the World Cup.

Williams believes Smalling has a number of admirable qualities as a player and as a person.

He said: "Chris has a good physique, is very sharp across the ground and a good reader of the game with a good touch.

"Not only that, he is very intelligent boy, a nice lad and quick learner. I know he is excited about the challenge."

Summer signing Chris Smalling is itching to be involved in United’s first pre-season clash, against Celtic in Toronto.

The Reds take on the Scottish giants on Friday night (00:00 BST) and the former Fulham defender admits he’d love to be named in Sir Alex’s starting XI.

“I can’t wait to pull on the shirt for first time,” he told ManUtd.com. “I’m working hard in training and hopefully I’ll get some game time. I’m just really looking forward to getting out there and doing my best for the club.”

The 20-year-old say’s he’s settling in well and has already made a couple of friends since returning from his summer break.

“The tour’s been a really enjoyable experience so far. It was great to meet everyone, initially at Carrington and then on tour. It’s been good to get away and spend time getting to know the lads.

“I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Wes [Brown] and Jonny [Evans], my fellow centre-backs. And I’ve also been chatting to a lot of the younger lads. It’s just great to get to know everybody and be part of such a great club.

“I can’t quite believe how things have changed for me in the last few years. Going out to Australia with Fulham last summer on tour was a big experience, but to be out here now with the most famous club in the world is fantastic and I’m just looking forward to the games now.”
