Man Utd's Patrice Evra wants to send message with win over Real Madrid

Patrice Evra believes Manchester United can send a message to everyone in Europe if they can beat Real Madrid this month.

United take on the Spanish giants in a Round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League, with the first leg in Madrid on Wednesday.

And after suffering elimination in the group stages last season, the France international defender reckons beating Real would raise the club's profile back to where it belongs.

"This could lift everyone," said Evra, quoted in the Daily Mirror. "If we can beat Madrid then the response it gives to other teams would be important.

"Don't forget, last year we were knocked out in the first stage of the Champions League and maybe people have that image of Manchester United in Europe.

"We have to change that. That is why I think this is the perfect year to show who we really are.

"We can't miss this opportunity to show ourselves, it would be a massive disappointment.

"This is why I'm really looking forward to the match with Real Madrid. I've been waiting for a big European tie like this for a long time and it's probably the biggest European game since Barcelona in 2008.

"The fans have been waiting for this too. Manchester United v Real Madrid is a game for big players, big characters, big personalities."

Important

It's a busy period for United as they face a tricky Premier League clash against Everton on Sunday - the team who derailed their title hopes last season by salvaging a 4-4- draw from two goals down at Old Trafford.
"It's a really important time for us," added Evra. "It's important that we do well in the league in February, but we also have the Champions League game against Real Madrid.

"This is the time when you have to win your games and show that Manchester United is the number one team. It won't be easy, but this is the right moment.

"Nobody forgets the big disappointment of losing the title last season. It's really important that we just keep going because the league is not finished in February. We have a lead but nothing is done yet.

"We just have to take it game by game and aim to win every match. That's the right attitude to have. In every game this season we have had the right attitude.

"That's why I think the fans and the players are very happy this year because we really want to show we are champions. We have to keep going that way."

Sir Alex to rotate in key week

Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated he will make full use of his squad in the next two games, which mark an important week in United’s season.

The Barclays Premier League leaders host high-flying Everton*on Sunday before travelling to Real Madrid for the first leg of a mouth-watering Champions League tie three days later.

The Reds will be*aiming to come out the other side with a nine-point league lead still intact, and with a positive result at the Bernabeu to take back to Old Trafford.

And Sir Alex revealed he will continue his policy of rotating his players to give his side the best possible chance of success in both encounters.

“It will be different teams,” he said at his Friday press conference. “The team on Sunday will not be the same as the team that plays on Wednesday.

“I trust the squad of players I have. They are all internationals, they are all good players and there is no reason why I can’t play them.

“They’re all contributing in their own way and that gives us a better chance of dealing with the various competitions we’re in.”

Sir Alex will be relieved that the clutch of players who were away on international duty this week appear to have returned unscathed.

While asserting that “there is not a domestic manager who can agree to friendly internationals at this time of year”, the Reds boss admitted England’s win over Brazil on Wednesday may actually have benefitted two of his players.

“I was happy for Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling to play full games at Wembley because they have not had a lot of football anyway,” he said.

“In fairness, [England manager] Roy Hodgson was quite fair with us in terms of who played a full game and who played parts. He did that with us all, particularly the teams playing in Europe.”

One player who looks set to miss both the Everton and Real clashes is Paul Scholes, who has not featured since last month’s FA Cup win over Fulham.

“Paul has a little bit of a knee injury,” Sir Alex revealed. “He has missed the last couple of games. He started training on Thursday and should be okay next week.”

Sir Alex also confirmed he has not yet talked to Scholes about whether he will play on next season, insisting there is “plenty of time”.

Ronaldo: Saya Bantu Real Singkirkan United

"Namun pertandingan tetaplah pertandingan.

Roberto Mancini Dukung Manchester United Di Liga Champions

Jose is so good at mind games, I won't bother taking him on! Fergie dodges psychological battle with Real Madrid boss on eve of Champions League showdown
dailymail.co.uk, Joe Bernstein - 9 February 2013

Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to avoid getting dragged into mind games by Jose Mourinho ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie in Madrid.

Ferguson, who became one of Mourinho’s friendliest rivals when Manchester United and Chelsea were battling for trophies, described the Real Madrid coach boss as a ‘clever b****r’ who will try and use the power of the media to his own advantage.

The 71-year-old United manager said: ‘I think Jose plays games, he enjoys that part. He enjoys it better than I do, he has this mischievous side and you are never quite sure what he is up to.

Losing the war of words: Sir Alex Ferguson conceded defeat to Jose Mourinho in any mind games the Real Madrid boss might be planning ahead of their Champions League clash next Wednesday

‘My advice to myself is not to go down that road, not to contest that because he is a clever b*****r, and so I let him get on with it.

‘As long as he brings me a decent bottle of wine, I’ll let him off.’

Mourinho is under pressure in Madrid as he trails Barcelona in La Liga and he could even face the sack if he goes out to United over two legs.

Candid: Ferguson was speaking in an interview with BBC Football Focus' Dan Walker

He reverentially calls Sir Alex ‘The Boss’ but has lost only twice to him in 14 games and knocked United out en route to Porto winning the Champions League in 2004. Ferguson prefers to concentrate on his own plans rather than engaging in a battle of wits with Mourinho, one of the leading candidates to eventually succeed him at Old Trafford.

‘I have to make sure I pick the right team in Madrid,’ he told the BBC’s Football Focus.

Wary: Ferguson will be wary of Mourinho's Real Madrid side, despite their stuttering league form

‘That’s the biggest challenge. We know their obvious strengths. The atmosphere will be absolutely fantastic. They don’t lose many games at the Bernabeu. I watch Real Madrid every week. I watched them (last) Saturday night when they played Granada. I thought (Cristiano) Ronaldo scored a great goal again, only it was for the other team!’

On his own future, he added: ‘This question comes up more and more simply because, as each year goes on, I get older. It’s a fact of life. I can’t avoid that. The issue is how I feel within myself. As you get older, you are not guaranteed your health. No*one is when you get into your seventies.

‘Touch wood, my health remains for a long time yet. At the moment, everything is hunky dory.’

Barb: Ferguson had a cheeky dig at Cristiano Ronaldo's (centre) own goal against Granada last week

A large part of United's success this season has been the purchase of superstar striker Robin van Persie.

'I never thought we had a chance of getting Robin because I didn't think Arsenal would sell to us,' said the manger on his striker, who has 22 goals this season.

'My discussions with Arsene were good but long, probably a couple of months. They realised that the lad wanted to leave. It was a matter of negiotiating the price with Arsene.'

United eventually paid £25million for the Dutchman.

Difference maker: Robin van Persie's (right) 22 goals this season have fired United to the top of the Premier League

Sir Alex also warned his players that they will feel the full force of his famous hairdryer if they blow a title like they did last season.
