Under-18s : Manchester United 7 Newcastle 1

Barclays Under-18 Premier League Merit Group | 9 April 2016 | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Gomes 3, Boonen 35, 72, 83, Dearnley 58, Kehinde 80, Reid 90; Smith 39.

Manchester United’s Under-18s swept to easily their biggest win of the season at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday against a plucky and hard-working Newcastle United side.

The game was pretty well in the balance for best part of an hour, but then the hosts turned up the heat in the final third of the game to put the result beyond doubt with Indy Boonen completing a hat-trick as the Reds went on a goalscoring rampage.

Having endured a largely disappointing league season, the Under-18s started the secondary merit phase with a couple of encouraging successes but then slipped up with two consecutive defeats before the international break. So it was with a renewed focus that Tommy Martin’s youngsters approached this game against Newcastle to begin the final weeks of the campaign.

It was a bright afternoon as the teams lined up - Newcastle strangely in white shirts and blue shorts rather than their universally-famous black-and-white stripes.

Reds coach Martin had urged his players to make a lively opening to the contest, so he must have been delighted when they raced out of the blocks to take the lead inside three minutes.
When Boonen sent over a pass from the left, Angel Gomes was presented with the simple task of sweeping the ball into the net. It seems crazy to say that the hosts deserved the goal, after just three minutes of the game, but it was certainly in keeping with the early flow of play.

The Reds continued to make the running, but in the 11th minute, Newcastle’s Callum Smith did well down the left before wildly firing over George Dorrington’s bar. A few minutes later, Daniel Lowther went close for the Magpies when his well-struck shot thumped against the upright.

There was a lengthy delay soon after when Newcastle defender Oliver Walters was attended to on the field for what appeared to be a knee injury and he was later taken from the scene via a mini-ambulance.

Martin's boys increased their lead immediately after the restart with Boonen getting his name on the scoresheet, though the Magpies pulled one back just before half-time when Smith broke free before hitting his shot past Dorrington.

The second half of the game followed a similar pattern to the one we had witnessed during the opening spell. Both teams were prepared to put the emphasis on attack, but the Reds were much more accurate in front of goal. Zachary Dearnley increased the lead to 3-1, in the 58th minute, following a nice little spell of attacking from the Reds.

Newcastle had been in the game up to this point, but it was soon to get well beyond their grasp as the home side proceeded to bag three goals in an 11-minute spell.

Boonen claimed two of them to complete his hat-trick, either side of a strike from Tosin Kehinde. Reds right-back Tyler Reid completed the rout when he joined the attack to score the seventh and final goal and crown a fine afternoon for Manchester United's youngsters.

United: Dorrington; Reid, Warren, Scott, Olosunde (Dunne 75); McIntosh-Buffonge, Whelan (Sang 65), Kehinde, Boonen; Gomes, Dearnley. Substitutes not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui (Gk), Kenyon, Diedrick-Roberts.

UNDER-18S : NORWICH 2 UNITED 3

Barclays Under-18 Premier League Merit Group | 22 April 2016 | Colney Training Centre | Scorers: Couzens 16, Higgs 22 | Tanner 46, Barlow 69, Gomes 88.

Manchester United's Under-18s staged a terrific fightback to claim victory over Norwich City at a cloudy and chilly Colney Training Centre on Friday afternoon.

Trailing by two goals at the break, the Reds appeared to be heading for defeat but their second-half performance did much to erase the memory of the earlier 45 minutes. United were aiming to build on recent improved form and certainly looked bright and ready for the challenge early on despite the previous day's long journey to Norfolk from Manchester.

Norwich, in their green and yellow quartered shirts, gave this game the impression of what a United versus Newton Heath contest could have looked like as that combination of colours was, of course, worn by United’s founding club back in the 1870s.

There was little to choose between the teams in the early stages, but then United were hit by two goals from the Canaries inside six minutes. George Couzens put the Canaries in front after 16 minutes and, soon after, Kieran Higgs found the net to stretch the home side’s lead.

It has to be said that it didn’t look good for the young Reds as they disappeared into the sanctuary of the dressing room at half-time but that was all to change immediately after the break.

Within 40 seconds of the restart, United were back in the hunt as George Tanner found the target after receiving the ball from Angel Gomes. That early reply was just what the doctor ordered and it provided the springboard for a remarkable turnaround to the game.

United were a completely different proposition from the first half and there were encouraging signs that a comeback could be on the cards. That possibility increased in the 69th minute when substitute Aidan Barlow took a pass from Indy Boonen before scoring the equaliser with an angled shot.

Norwich then went close to restoring the lead but United’s defence stood firm and DJ Buffonge had a shot blocked. The Reds' recovery was completed in the 88th minute when Gomes raced down the left before slotting home past Canaries keeper Jake Hallett.

‘A game of two halves’ is an over-used description, but this match certainly fitted snuggly into that category. Meanwhile, Italian defender Luca Ercolani and schoolboy keeper James Thompson were named on the bench for the first time for the Under-18s.

United : Moutha-Sebtaoui; Olosunde (Dunne 85), Warren, Scott, Reid; Buffonge, Sang (Barlow 62), Kehinde, Buffonge, Tanner (Makela 76); Gomes; Boonen. Subs not used: J.Thompson, Ercolani.

U18S : MANCHESTER UNITED 1 SOUTHAMPTON 0

Manchester United’s Under-18s earned three points from their final game of the season on Saturday as Indy Boonen scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Southampton at the J. Davidson Stadium.

Conditions in Altrincham were far from ideal due to the unpredictable weather that has confused and frustrated the people of Greater Manchester this week, with heavy rain and hailstorm pouring down on a pitch that was already displaying signs of wear and tear following a long season.

Yet neither side showed any reluctance to play and Angel Gomes went close to breaking the deadlock with a cheeky chip on 27 minutes. Southampton should have scored themselves a few moments later, when Ben Rowthorn’s shot was saved by Moutha-Sebtaoui before Harley Willard pounced on the loose ball to hit a powerful shot onto the bar from close range.

Tommy Martin’s men were under pressure for much of the first half but almost scored from a fine chance just before half-time, when some intricate passing play led to Tyler Reid being played through to the right of goal, though the powerful right-back could only hit his effort into the side-netting.

United made a bright start to the second half as the sun tried to break through in Altrincham and the Reds quickly took the lead on 50 minutes, as the impressive Gomes played a fantastic pass through the Saints defence for Boonen to unleash a calm and assured finish into the bottom corner.

Martin’s men controlled what transpired to be a comfortable second half and tried to find another goal, with DJ Buffonge going close with a curling effort that was parried wide on 67 minutes. The same player then forced another good save from the Saints goalkeeper on 72 minutes.

Although the visitors tried to push up the pitch as the clock ticked on, in an attempt to restore parity, the Reds held on to secure what was a straightforward 1-0 victory.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Reid, Olosunde, Sang (Barlow 64’), Warren, Scott, Boonen, Kehinde, Tanner, Gomes, Buffonge (Makela 77'). Subs not used: Dunne, Dorrington, Ercolani.
