WHAT IS JOSE MOURINHO'S VIEW OF VAR?

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has outlined his opinions on the new technology in football, ahead of the Reds’ first match using the VAR system against Huddersfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.

The video assistant referee has been trialled in both domestic cup competitions in England this term [the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup] but this is the first time a United match has had it in place.

Although there has been some controversy in other fixtures of late, Jose is broadly in agreement with the changes and feels it is time for the match officials to receive some support.

“When people ask us if we like it, if we don’t like it, if we agree with it or don’t agree with it, I think honestly it’s a question for the referees,” the boss told MUTV.

“They want to perform the best they can, they don’t like to make mistakes. And sometimes they make mistakes because it’s a human mistake and you cannot go over it unless you have some technological support. So if the referees are happy with that technological support, then yes, let’s go for the VAR. I think, from my perspective, I like the feeling.”

The manager is clear the testing of the new system will iron out any teething problems with the technology.

“Of course they need adjustments,” he said. “They need to make sure that they don’t change the dynamic of the game too much, the emotion of the game too much – people waiting a couple of minutes to know if they can jump [and celebrate] because it was a goal.

“But from my professional perspective, I like the feeling of a right decision is coming. It’s a penalty or not a penalty, it’s handball or not handball, it’s a red card or not a red card. I think a fair decision is a feeling that I like.”

semoga teknologi ini bisa membantu wasit bekerja lebih baik lagi, khusunya pada pertandingan FA Cup united bertemu Huddersfield minggu tengah malam kelak

OPINION: WHY HUDDERSFIELD IS HUGE FOR UNITED

This will sound odd, considering the stages on which Manchester United play, but Saturday’s match at Huddersfield Town and the modest John Smith’s Stadium is arguably our biggest of 2018 so far. I understand that is a debatable claim to make, but just hear me out will you?

In the context of the campaign, with Manchester City 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League, our best chances of success are represented by the Emirates FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. As you'll no doubt know, our next two fixtures are in those very competitions: away to Huddersfield and then Sevilla.

A trip to West Yorkshire and an industrial town that gave birth to rugby league is ordinarily a low-key occasion. But, for me at least, it is currently more important than our impending return to Europe’s big stage in picturesque Seville, Spain’s fourth largest city, because the repercussions of our performance and result in Kirklees will impact on the latter.

Win that fifth-round tie and the squad’s form, morale and confidence is immediately improved at a perfect time, potentially triggering a domino effect at an influential period in the campaign. Lose it and suddenly we are out of the FA Cup, shaken and facing a team that hasn’t lost at home in Europe this season, and held Liverpool to a couple of score draws in the group stage.

Huddersfield is a big test - make no mistake - and one that provides United with a chance to showcase the lessons that have been learned since losing to the Terriers back on 21 October – even if that result was partially avenged by this month’s 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

Club legend Paddy Crerand often states how a team’s confidence and momentum can be just as important as quality, particularly at the business end of the season, and the 1968 European Cup winner acknowledged the magnitude of this week during Monday night’s MUTV phone-in.

A big positive for United is the lack of a midweek fixture which is allowing Jose Mourinho to work on the training ground, focusing on tactics and the minutiae of his approach. The manager has admitted United must “fight” to bounce back and his attitude must be adopted by the players this weekend.

Huddersfield, inconveniently, are on a high after ending their five-match losing streak in the league with a superb 4-1 home win over Bournemouth, which Terriers manager David Wagner described as “one of the performances of the season” before calling on his players to replicate it against the Reds.

The United squad is thankfully talking a good game after the defeat at Newcastle, expressing sentiments stuffed with more purpose, drive and determination than the Winter Olympics. Phil Jones was typically honest in his post-match interviews at St James’ Park and admitted “we have to improve”, before Juan Mata wrote in his blog about the anger that is fuelling the squad this week.

“The truth is, after losing an away game, you think a lot about it on your way back home,” the Spaniard explained on Monday morning. “You remember every play, every moment, and you try to change the outcome but obviously that’s impossible - you can’t turn back time. The only way to carry on is to turn all this rage into a desire to win and work for the next game.”

The very fact that the nicest man in football is raging only highlights the importance of this week, and a fixture that could inspire the success of this campaign.

The opinions in this story are personal to the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United Football Club.

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera set to miss FA Cup clash at Huddersfield with thigh injury

* Jose Mourinho confirmed Ander Herrera has suffered a thigh injury
* The Spaniard is set to miss Saturday's FA Cup tie with Huddersfield Town
* He will be joined by Marcus Rashford who sat out Sunday's 1-0 loss at Newcastle
* United were looking to reintroduce Herrera to aid their struggling midfield
* Herrera could be sidelined for up to a few weeks while he receives treatment

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is doubtful for their FA Cup tie at Huddersfield Town.

The 28-year-old Spaniard has picked up an injury to his left thigh and could be out for a few weeks as he waits to see how it responds to treatment.

Jose Mourinho confirmed Herrera had picked up a muscle knock, as has Marcus Rashford, following Sunday's defeat by Newcastle United.

Ander Herrera is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury. Jose Mourinho confirmed Herrera could miss Saturday's FA Cup tie at Huddersfield

Herrera, who was named the club's player of the year last season, has been pushed to the fringes by the arrival of Nemanja Matic this campaign but was being considered for a recall to a starting place as United's midfield struggles for form.

Herrera has emerged as a summer target for a number of clubs abroad including AC Milan. However, he is happy at United while he continues to compete for a place. He has made 29 appearances this season.

United want to bring in another midfielder in the summer with Michael Carrick due to retire.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio and Napoli's Jorginho have both been watched this season while another option, Fred of Shakhtar Donetsk is joining Manchester City.

FIVE BIG QUESTIONS: HUDDERSFIELD V UNITED

Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup campaign will resume on Saturday with a fifth-round tie against Huddersfield Town and, as ever, there is plenty to talk about ahead of kick-off. Here are five pertinent questions up for discussion…

WILL WE BOUNCE BACK?

United suffered a shock Premier League loss at Newcastle on Sunday and the squad is determined to respond in the best way, by producing a winning performance at the John Smith’s Stadium. The evidence is encouraging, too, considering that Jose Mourinho’s men have won six out of seven matches that have followed defeats this campaign. A victory at Huddersfield won’t come easily, though, because the Terriers are on a high after a 4-1 win over Bournemouth at the weekend. There’s also the small matter of their win over us in October...

REPEAT OR REVENGE?
That major upset in West Yorkshire back on 21 October was Huddersfield’s first victory over a United team in 65 years and it ended our unbeaten start to the current season. Aaron Mooy and Lauren Depoitre scored first-half goals for the home side in the 2-1 triumph, with substitute Marcus Rashford finishing for United on 78 minutes, and Mourinho was honest in his assessment afterwards. He admitted “the best team won” and said “I have to give them credit”. It was a tough day for everyone of a red persuasion, and those memories will provide added inspiration this Saturday evening. Victory is needed, with the two remaining cup competitions representing our best chances of silverware in 2017/18.

WILL THE MANAGER MAKE CHANGES?
That seems likely following the defeat at Newcastle, but the number of alterations remains to be seen and Mourinho may provide a clue during his press conference, or MUTV interview, on Friday afternoon. One of the main talking points that has stemmed from Sunday’s result is the fitness of Paul Pogba, who had apparently limped out of the warm-up before starting the match and then exited the fray during the second half. However, the boss later declared the Frenchman to be fine, which is obviously great news. Elsewhere, it is plausible that Luke Shaw may return at left-back due to the boss regularly rotating between him and Ashley Young, and it remains to be seen if two other key players will be available for selection…

ARE HERRERA AND RASHFORD FIT?
We’ll have to wait and see. Ander and Marcus were left out of the squad at James’ Park on Sunday due to minor muscular injuries, but it’s encouraging that the boss did not believe their problems were serious when he spoke before the game. The only confirmed absentee is Marouane Fellaini while Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who have been missing for several months, are edging closer to a return.

MEANWHILE, WHO WILL SEVILLA BE PLAYING?
This FA Cup tie is clearly the priority and the squad is 100 per cent focused on its outcome, but us fans are allowed to cast an eye on next Wednesday’s return to UEFA Champions League action against Sevilla, who are also in action on Saturday. They’re currently sixth in La Liga and have a midday kick-off against 18th-placed Las Palmas, who need a positive result in their fight to avoid relegation.

FA CUP PREVIEW: HUDDERSFIELD V UNITED

Setting the scene... The Reds will look to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing defeat against Newcastle United by reaching the quarter finals of the Emirates FA Cup for the fourth year in a row. Saturday's clash will be our third meeting with Huddersfield in less than four months, and Jose Mourinho’s men hope to avenge the 2-1 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium in October. It's the first of three matches in three different competitions for United, who will travel to Spain for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Sevilla next week before a key top-flight clash at home to Chelsea.

How can I watch it? Saturday's 17:30 GMT kick-off will be broadcast live on BT Sport in the UK. Subscribers to MUTV can watch build-up from 15:30 GMT on the Match Day show, and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full on Sunday at 12:00 GMT. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and by following our official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What’s the team news? With the Champions League trip in midweek in mind, the boss could be tempted to make changes but is still likely to field a strong team - as he has in the previous two rounds of the FA Cup against Derby County and Yeovil Town respectively. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly could return before the end of the month, and Marouane Fellaini is still recovering from knee surgery. Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera missed last Sunday's game at Newcastle last week through injury and the boss could give a further update on their progress - and his squad as a whole - in Friday's pre-match press conference.

Huddersfield's Tommy Smith could return from a head injury which kept him out of the weekend's 4-1 win over Bournemouth, but Chris Löwe and Laurent Depoitre are likely to miss out again through injury.

How have both sides reached this stage?
Both teams will be facing Premier League opposition for the first time in the FA Cup this term. The Reds beat Championship side Derby County 2-0 at Old Trafford in round three, before easing past League Two outfit Yeovil Town with a 4-0 victory at Huish Park. Meanwhile, the Terriers have seen off two Championship sides but it hasn't been plain sailing. Following a 2-1 win at struggling Bolton in the third round, they needed extra-time in a replay to beat Birmingham City 4-1 at St Andrew's, after a 1-1 draw at home.

How have Huddersfield fared recently? David Wagner's men are in buoyant mood ahead of Saturday's game, after defeating Bournemouth 4-1 at home in their last outing. However, Huddersfield have endured a poor start to 2018 overall, and hadn't won in eight league games prior to their morale-boosting victory last weekend. The Terriers are currently 17th in the Premier League table, just outside the bottom three, and have averaged a point a game in their 27 league matches so far this season.

What happened last time? This weekend will be the second time the teams have met this month, after the Premier League game on 3 February. United ran out 2-0 winners at Old Trafford on an emotional day for the club, when the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster was marked. Lukaku's well-taken volley and Alexis Sanchez's first goal for the club in the second half sealed three points.

What's our record like against them? Well, the Reds have won 21 of the previous 47 meetings against Huddersfield in all competitions. The Terriers have emerged victorious on 11 occasions, with the sides drawing 15 times. Prior to this season, United and Huddersfield had not met since 1972, when George Best and Ian Storey-Moore scored in a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

A first for the Reds... Saturday's game will be the first in United history in which a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be employed. The new technology, which is currently on trial in selected games in English cup competitions, has caused a lot of debate among football fans. Jose Mourinho told MUTV earlier this week that he's in favour of the system and said: "If the referees are happy with that technological support, then yes, let’s go for the VAR. I think, from my perspective, I like the feeling."

Who's the referee? Kevin Friend will be the man in the middle, as the Leicestershire whistler handles his second United game of the season - and in the FA Cup - after taking charge of our 2-0 win over Derby in the third round. He will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Matthew Wilkes, with Anthony Taylor on fourth official duties. Neil Swarbrick has been appointed as the VAR and will be helped by assistant Andy Garratt.

Did you know? United once played an FA Cup fifth-round home tie at Huddersfield's old ground, Leeds Road. The game in 1948 couldn't be played at Old Trafford, which was still under repair from damages sustained in the war, and Manchester City, who United shared a ground with at the time, were drawn at home. The Reds won 2-0 against Charlton Athletic and went on to win the cup that year.

One to watch: Steve Mounie put in a Man-of-the-Match performance as Huddersfield overcame Bournemouth in their previous game. The Beninese striker scored two goals and provided an assist last time out, and was also on target as the Terriers beat Birmingham 4-1 in the previous round of the cup. Mounie seems to have overcome the injury problems which hampered him in the early part of the season and could be a real handful for the United defence.

TEAM NEWS AHEAD OF HUDDERSFIELD TIE

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has provided his latest team news ahead of the Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie at Huddersfield Town.

Speaking to MUTV, the boss revealed defender Eric Bailly is back in training after ankle surgery. The influential Ivory Coast international has been out since November and his return should provide a timely boost as he is a fresh option for selection on Saturday.

Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford remain sidelined after being unavailable for the last outing, the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still recovering full fitness.

"We want to go to the quarter-finals so we go with a serious approach," the boss told MUTV. "I have more Premier Leagues and League Cups so, of course, I'd like more [FA Cups] but I'm not thinking about myself. I'm thinking about the club and the fans."

When addressing reporters at his press conference, Jose also confirmed Paul Pogba will play against the Terriers, despite some suggestions he was carrying a knock against Newcastle.

For the hosts, Tommy Smith should be available after missing the win over Bournemouth with a head injury but Chris Lowe and Laurent Depoitre are doubts. Elias Kacunga is a long-term absentee.

Huddersfield beat United 2-1 in the league at the John Smith's Stadium but were defeated 2-0 at Old Trafford earlier this month.
