Manchester United star Wayne Rooney suspended for Everton trip as Jose Mourinho bemoans fifth booking of the season: 'He didn't touch opponent'

Wayne Rooney will be suspended for Manchester United's visit to his old club Everton on Sunday after he was controversially booked in Wednesday night's EFL Cup win over West Ham.

Rooney was shown his fifth yellow card of the season by referee Mike Jones for dissent when he reacted angrily to being penalised for a foul on Edimilson Fernandes in the second half.

It means the former Everton player will miss out on a return to Goodison Park and the chance to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time United record of 249 goals at the ground where he started his career.

Rooney was also furious that Jones took no action against Winston Reid after he was caught in the face by a high boot from the West Ham defender that left him needing treatment for a minor cut on his cheek.

Manager Jose Mourinho felt his captain had every right to feel aggrieved about the booking, claiming there was no contact as Fernandes threw himself to the ground.

'He is suspended for a foul when he did not touch the opponent and he cannot play against Everton,' said the United boss.

'He cannot go back home for such a big match because of a situation where he didn't touch the opponent.'

It was the only blemish on an otherwise fine night for United as they booked a place in semi-finals against Hull City – managed by Sir Alex Ferguson's old assistant Mike Phelan – in January.

Mourinho watched the game in his office at Old Trafford after he accepted an FA charge of improper conduct two-and-a-half hours before kick-off and was handed a one-match touchline ban.

But it made little difference as United swept to a 4-1 win with Henrikh Mkhitaryan delivering a man-of-the-match performance, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial scoring two goals apiece, and Rooney looking more like his old self.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has been frozen out under Mourinho, also made his first appearance for United since mid-March as a late substitute, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Mourinho, who has bemoaned United's luck in Premier League draws at home to Burnley, Stoke, Arsenal and West Ham this season, was encouraged to see his team convert their chances as they produced a fluid attacking performance.

'I think we are in the right direction,' he said. 'We played very well and that makes me happy. One of the things I proposed to myself was to come to a club like Manchester United and play the kind of football that people want. It's a Man United tradition. I'm really happy with that.

'That's our way of playing. I've never had a team with so much possession, so much creation, so many chances – but I never had a team with so many draws.

'I want this beautiful team to win more matches. We need to score more goals like this.

'I'm happy with the victory and to give a semi-final to Old Trafford. Let's try to go back to Wembley.'

On Mkhitaryan's performance, he added: 'I'm so happy because today was against a proper and typical Premier League team and Mikhi could perform this way.

'We know the reason why we bought him and we were waiting for his adaptation and it looks like it's coming.'

Ashley Fletcher scored a surprise equaliser for West Ham 10 minutes before half-time, but manager Slaven Bilic conceded that the better team won.

'I'm very disappointed,' said Bilic. 'You can't have a slow start anywhere, especially not here because they're good anyway.

'When they're one up they hit on the counter attack, have amazing quality and punish you.

'At half-time we said we couldn't allow them to do it again, but it was exactly the same start in the second half. It's hard to come back twice.'

Tandang ke Everton ya. Lebih konservatif atau mau lebih menyerang? Klo mo lebih kuat di tengah pakai 433.

Terserah Mou mau yang mana. Pakai 3 gelandang pun bukan berarti susah nyerang. Hanya lebih balance menurutku.

Yang pasti untuk sementara jauhi dulu nama2 Lingard dan Fellaini. Yang bagus2 aja yang main.

Dengan posisi United di klasemen saat ini, sepertinya Mou tidak akan ambil resiko menurunkan pemain yang penampilannya tidak konsisten. Mungkin bakal menjadi kejutan jika tiba-tiba Mou memainkan Bastian lagi yach :D
