Jose Mourinho vs Pep Guardiola: Is the Manchester United manager starting to out-shine his Manchester City rival?

* Both clubs are involved in a tight fight to secure a place in the top four
* Fourth-placed City are one point ahead of fifth-placed United after 32 games

It has taken 10 months for Jose Mourinho’s rivalry with Pep Guardiola to come to the boil as they prepare to do battle in Thursday’s pivotal Manchester derby at the Etihad.

The very fact that two of the world’s top coaches are scrambling for a top-four place in the Premier League is an indication that the season has not gone entirely to plan.

The title race and FA Cup final will be fought out between the London clubs, relegating Mourinho’s highly-anticipated duel with Guardiola to little more than a sideshow.

There is still a huge amount at stake, however, with both men desperate to end their first season in Manchester with a Champions League place.

Sportsmail looks at how they have done so far.

Assess the season up to this point...

Jose Mourinho: If the United manager can add the Europa League to the League Cup and Community Shield — ‘two and a half trophies’ as he would say — there won’t be too many complaints around Old Trafford.

Crucially, it would secure automatic qualification for the Champions League regardless of United’s attempts to finish in the top four over the next month.

Even so, Mourinho began the season talking up a title challenge that has never materialised. That has to improve next time. 6/10

Pep Guardiola: Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal means Guardiola will finish a season empty-handed for the first time in a decorated coaching career after starting off with 10 straight wins, and he accepts that City’s owners in Abu Dhabi will be disappointed.

They criticised Manuel Pellegrini last year despite reaching the last four of the Champions League, winning the League Cup and finishing fourth.
The latter of those achievements is now the bare minimum for Guardiola or his first season at the Etihad will be written off as a disaster after such high expectations. 4/10

Have their summer signings worked out?

Mourinho: By signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and breaking the world transfer record to buy Paul Pogba, United did their best to steal the limelight from City last summer.

Ibrahimovic’s 28-goal haul before he suffered a season-ending knee injury speaks for itself, but Pogba has struggled to justify his £89m price tag despite playing in a number of positions.

Eric Bailly’s importance to United’s defence increases with every passing week, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan has earned his popularity despite Mourinho’s slight indifference to the Armenian. 7/10

Guardiola: Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane fit the Guardiola mould of exciting, explosive forwards, and that is one area of the team that looks very healthy under the Spaniard. Nolito less so, and the £13.8m signing has not started a league game in 2017.

The jury is still out on Ilkay Gundogan, who was recovering from knee surgery when he arrived and suffered a fresh injury in December, while John Stones’ education under Guardiola remains a work in progress.

The decision to bring in Claudio Bravo as a replacement for Joe Hart has been less successful, however. The distribution from the back may be slightly better but Bravo’s shot-stopping has not been good enough. 5.5/10

How have they handled the players they inherited?

Mourinho: Typically, Mourinho has not shied away from confrontation or criticism of his players as Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial have discovered. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have also come under fire recently.

But it’s undoubtedly a happier camp than under the strict regime imposed by Louis van Gaal.

Juan Mata has prospered despite concerns over his history with Mourinho and Ander Herrera has emerged as a key figure.

There have been concerns that Martial and Marcus Rashford were stagnating but the latter, at least, has started to show real signs of progress again. 6/10

Guardiola: Raheem Sterling has benefitted from Guardiola’s guidance this season, and the coach should also be commended for his astute handling of Yaya Toure.

But the failure to do more to strengthen an ageing and creaking defence has undermined City from the start, particularly when you consider Guardiola’s use of attacking full backs in the past.

His uneasy relationship with Sergio Aguero is also an area of concern. 6/10

What about the style of play?

Mourinho: The former Chelsea manager has been more sympathetic to United’s attacking principles than some expected.

Indeed, had his team made the most of their chances in 12 league draws this season — nine of them at home — they would be going to the Etihad on Thursday in a very different position. 7/10

Guardiola: There have been times this season when Guardiola’s critics have accused him of trying to be too clever for his own good and sticking to his principles rather than the basics.

City in full flow are still a joy to watch but they need to be a more solid unit. 7/10

How have they done in Europe?

Mourinho: Mourinho started off the season admitting he didn’t want to be in the Europa League but says he would rather end it by lifting the trophy in Stockholm next month than finish in the top four.

It’s been an arduous campaign and he has done well to combine it with United’s Premier League commitments. 8/10

Guardiola: The two-time Champions League winner may talk about City’s lack of ‘history’ in Europe, but he inherited a team that lost in the semi-finals to eventual winners Real Madrid last season and then suffered a last-16 defeat by Monaco this season. A big disappointment. 5/10

How have they coped with the pressure?

Mourinho: Mourinho appeared to be losing his cool when he was sent to the stands twice in the space of six games against West Ham and Burnley in the first half of the season, but he has been a more composed figure since then. 6/10

Guardiola: Although Guardiola can come across as rather awkward at times, he mocks the notion that he will somehow transform English football.
His honesty and reluctance to criticise officials is also refreshing for a coach who is less familiar with failure than most. 7/10

Any early team news for United? We know Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are out with knee ligament damage, while Mourinho is unsure if Paul Pogba will be available after the Frenchman was forced off late on at Turf Moor. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata remain sidelined. The boss made eight changes at Burnley and will likely freshen up his team again at the Etihad Stadium, with the visit of Swansea City to follow three days later and then the Europa League semi-final first leg at Celta Vigo. One man who is set to return for the Reds is in-form right-back Antonio Valencia, who was rested on Sunday, while Anthony Martial will hope to be involved after an impressive goalscoring appearance at Burnley.

What about City – I heard Aguero and Silva are doubtful? Yes, key playmaker David Silva was substituted midway through the first half of their cup semi at Wembley and Sergio Aguero, who opened the scoring, also picked up a knock and came off in extra time. Fernandinho is also a doubt, while John Stones, Gabriel Jesus and Bacary Sagna all face a race to be fit.

How have we fared at their place recently? Overall, United have won seven games, drawn one and lost seven at the Etihad Stadium, and last season’s visit resulted in a joyous 1-0 triumph, thanks to a strike from Marcus Rashford, who could be charged with leading the line again on Thursday. Wayne Rooney, who marked his first start since early March by scoring in the win at Burnley, has netted seven goals for United at City’s home over the years.

And it’s one apiece in the two derbies so far this term, right? Yep. City claimed the bragging rights with a 2-1 league win at Old Trafford in September but we gained a measure of revenge the following month by knocking them out of the EFL Cup, with Mata’s goal securing a 1-0 home victory.

When was the last time the Manchester derby was played on a Thursday night? It was the famous 5-0 thrashing of the Blues at Old Trafford on 10 November 1994, when Andrei Kanchelskis bagged a hat-trick. This season’s away derby was originally scheduled for the weekend of the EFL Cup final in February but was rearranged for Thursday this week, with Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur already selected for Wednesday's live TV slot on Sky Sports.

Any other trivia for me? Should United draw or win on Thursday, we will equal our longest unbeaten top-flight run in a single season (24 matches in 2010/11). It’s an impressive run that goes all the way back to the defeat at Chelsea in October.

What has Jose said ahead of the game? "There is one point [between the teams] so the situation is open but Man City has to play Premier League football and we have to play in the semi-finals of a European competition. Yes, it’s an objective to try to finish in the top four but my feeling is that this club is made to win trophies. In the Premier League, we cannot win it. In the Europa League, we have a 25 per cent chance of winning it. So, I think we have to put everything into the Europa League."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera are fit and available for Thursday’s derby showdown with Manchester City, but Paul Pogba is set to miss out.

In-form Valencia was rested for Sunday’s 2-0 win at Burnley, where Pogba had to leave the field late on and was replaced by Michael Carrick.

United are a point behind fourth-placed City ahead of the Etihad Stadium encounter and at his pree-match press conference on Wednesday, Mourinho was asked which players were coming back into his side.

“Valencia,” said the boss, who was already without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones through injury. “We go with what we have and we fight with what we have.

“I trust the boys and we go with everything we have until the last second of the season, we hope. We are fighters, the boys are fighters, and we go.”

When asked if Pogba and Herrera were fit, the manager replied: “Paul, no. Herrera, yes.”

United would go above City in the table for the first time since August with a victory but Mourinho is only concerned with finishing in the top four, not the crosstown rivalry.

“It means nothing,” he said. “If we finish fifth and they finish sixth, it means nothing. If they finish third and we finish fourth, they are above us but it means a lot.

“This is not about Pep [Guardiola], this is not about City, this is about objectives and we want to try to play Champions League football. We still have two doors open.”

Talking about the prospects of both Manchester clubs for the remainder of the season, Pep Guardiola said: ‘The team that fails less will go to the Champions League.’

It was an interesting angle to take at the business end of a season that we felt would hold so much for Guardiola’s Manchester City and the United side coached by Jose Mourinho, but it also felt about right.

For City, this season is no longer about achievement. It is about meeting minimum requirements after Guardiola labelled his debut season ‘not good’.

For United, too, we are hardly in hallelujah territory. Their season has a slightly more satisfactory ring about it, given that they were coming from further back, have won the EFL Cup and are in the last four of the Europa League.

Still, a tussle for fourth place in the Premier League is an unexpected battleground, one summed up by Mourinho when he spoke to the media on Wednesday.

Asked what it would mean to finish above City, Mourinho said: ‘Nothing. If you finish fifth and they finish sixth we are above them but it means nothing. If they finish third and we finish fourth they are above us but it means a lot.

‘This is not about Pep or City. This is about fighting for objectives. We want to try to play Champions League and we still have two doors open.’

There were no Pep-Jose fireworks on Wednesday, though there may be on Thursday. We should not have been surprised, either.

These are two men who have met in a Champions League semi-final and fought over the La Liga title in Spain. Currently, they are competing for English football’s scraps and they are not used to it.

Guardiola said: ‘If you analyse the trophies, how many were we able to win this year? Zero. So it’s simple. If you analyse how many titles was good or not good, then the season was not good. It was not as good as I’d expect.’

The context of tonight’s game is straightforward. United have not been ahead of City in the Premier League since August and trailed them by as many as 10 points after 13 games of the season and by seven just over a month ago.

Victory for Mourinho’s side tonight, though, would move United into the top four and push City down to fifth.

It would represent a remarkable turnaround, even if United still have difficult-looking fixtures at Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal to come.

Both teams will suffer from absent players. City are waiting on a fitness report about their influential midfield player David Silva while United are without a clutch of players, most notably Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

At the weekend Mourinho spoke controversially about his injured defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, suggesting they should play through the pain to make themselves available. Neither will feature and Mourinho repeated himself, adding only that both would be given further opportunities under him in the future.

‘Of course,’ he said. ‘I hope this season. It’s not just about them. It’s about the philosophy and mentality around them. So we go into this game with the players we have.

‘Maybe opponents look at us with different eyes because we don’t have Zlatan and Paul and Rojo and Mata and Jones and Smalling. But I think they are not stupid, they are not naive and they know that we are going to give them a fight.’

United will begin as underdogs tonight and perhaps that’s right. They are away — Mourinho’s away record against Guardiola features just one victory — and their recent fixture programme has been gruelling, but which version of Guardiola’s City will we get?

The one that beat their neighbours impressively at Old Trafford in September or the one that failed to hold a lead against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final this last weekend? That may be definitive but the broader picture remains the same.

Guardiola joked that he and Mourinho ‘high-five’ when they pass in the street in Manchester. A ridiculous notion, not least because this is a season that has given neither men anything of great significance to celebrate.

At the start of the season we thought these two heavyweight managers would be battling it out for the title. Instead, they are fighting just to get in the top four.

Jose Mourinho will be cursing his luck with the injuries that his Manchester United squad have suffered, while Pep Guardiola will be coming to terms with the fact that this is his first season without a trophy.

Thursday night is Manchester City's chance to redress the balance. United head to the Etihad in better form but their punishing schedule and mounting injury woes could catch up with them.

BLIND MUST QUICKLY GET UP TO SPEED

United won at Burnley on Sunday with Eric Bailly and Daley Blind as centre backs in a makeshift defence.

Injuries have hit United particularly badly in this area and if they lose, Mourinho has a ready-made excuse. This Manchester City front line is the fastest anyone will face all season.

Blind is a clever player but he does not have the pace to live with the likes of Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling. Bailly has a reputation for being quick but he and Blind will be tested to the limit.

CITY IN GOOD KOMPANY

While the injury crisis has grown at United, City have been given a massive boost with the return of Vincent Kompany.

He may have looked a little rusty against Arsenal in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final defeat but I was surprised by the Belgian's levels of fitness after being out for such a long time. At his peak, there are few better centre backs in the Premier League than Kompany.

Plenty of people have said he is the perfect partner for John Stones, so it is ironic that the England defender is out now that Kompany is back.

RASHFORD AND MARTIAL CAN BE LETHAL UP FRONT

Where United can hurt City is with the pace of Marcus Rashford. Mourinho started the 19-year-old on the bench at Burnley, clearly with a view to unleashing him on City.

Nothing fazes this kid - he is the real deal. There is such flexibility to his play, but I expect him to start through the middle rather than out wide at the Etihad.

Rashford and Anthony Martial have not always been first choice for Mourinho but, given the injuries to the squad, he will be pleased to have them available. They could be the players who deliver success for Mourinho this season.

Hadeuhh...gagal kudeta posisi 4,,malah nyaris kalah di Etihad. Kacau bgd dari babak 1 ada 5 SoT dari City n MU cuma 1. Ga ada yg memutus aliran bola dari Toure n Fernandinho makanya Aguero cs gampang bgd lepaskan tembakan di kotak pinalti MU. Di ujung laga Fellaini malah red card,,jadilah MU makin ga bisa nyerang. Peluang finish 4 besar msh terbuka cz cm beda 1 n 2 poin sm City n Pool,,tapi MU harus lbh siap lagi di laga away vs Arsenal n Spurs.

Ten-man Manchester United held on for a point as rivals City were unable to capitalise late on after Marouane Fellaini's sending off at the Etihad Stadium.

Sergio Aguero hit the foot of a United post in the first half before Ander Herrera missed a free header, but chances were few and far between before Fellaini's moment of madness.

Having picked up a booking, Fellaini dived into another challenge on Aguero 19 seconds later, before throwing his head into the face of the Argentine to receive a straight red card.

After a typically high-octane clash in the fight for a top-four finish, Sportsmail's JACK GAUGHAN was on hand to assess the performances of those on show.

Quiet in an attacking sense but that was largely down to United's game plan. Sane barely got any joy so job done in that sense.

Strong night for the Ivorian. No-nonsense, Bailly keeps it simple and has a huge last ditch tackle in his locker.

DALEY BLIND - 6.5

Reads the game imperiously but is susceptible in behind, as Aguero showed when wriggling free.

MATTEO DARMIAN - 6.5

Sterling didn't really get in behind despite driving with the ball. Quickly passed on possession and didn't venture forward.

ANDER HERRERA - 6

Derbies are Herrera's bag and the Spaniard was terrier-like in midfield. Niggled away at City.

MICHAEL CARRICK - 7

Manfully stuck to De Bruyne throughout. No mean feat given the Belgian looked in menacing mood.

MAROUANE FELLAINI - 4.5

Ridiculous red card. Two stupid fouls and then a deserved sending off for a petulant headbutt. Irresponsible reaction and had barely contributed beforehand either.

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN - 5

As Jose Mourinho's alluded to, he needs to start producing consistently. Passive again and that will be a worry.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 7

Really lively with a couple of lovely tricks. Rashford was the most likely for United but appeared isolated.

ANTHONY MARTIAL - 6

Always has his moments - and tracked back admirably at times - but Rashford needed more support from wide areas.

With Paul Pogba out injured, Manchester United lacked balance in their midfield.

Marouane Fellaini does not have the legs to do what Pogba does and there was no link between the midfield and the attack.

Late on, Fellaini did not show any intelligence when he put his head into Sergio Aguero. These are the games where you need to keep your head but Fellaini seems unable to turn his back on a fight.

Jose Mourinho changes his tactics for every big game and on Thursday night was happy for Manchester City to have the ball and hit them on the break.

Marcus Rashford has frightening pace but was isolated, touching the ball just twice in City’s penalty area.

He needed Anthony Martial to stay closer to him higher up the pitch but he kept getting dragged back by Pablo Zabaleta.

Raheem Sterling is like a gymnast who dazzles with flips and turns but doesn’t land properly.

For all his swerves and moves, Sterling had no power in his finish last night. While Sterling’s finishing has improved this season, he still has work to do.

CITY TURN BACK TIME!

After using the last couple of games to dust off the cobwebs, Vincent Kompany was back to his no-nonsense best on Thursday night.

He looked sharp. Kompany swats forwards away and did so with Marcus Rashford.

With Yaya Toure making marauding runs in midfield, too, it was as if City had turned back time!

If City let Toure go in the summer there will be clubs queueing up to sign him — and Arsenal should be one of the teams looking to bring him in.

SLOPPY SERGIO

Sergio Aguero has not seemed as dynamic or ruthless this season.

Pep Guardiola has been spoiled during his managerial career with the likes of Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski up front. He is used to players putting the ball in the back of the net.

Of the top six goalscorers in the Premier League this season, Aguero has the second-worst shot conversion rate. The striker had nine attempts last night — his most without finding the net in a Premier League match. It remains to be seen whether Guardiola deems Aguero good enough in the long run.

Manchester derby was a sideshow instead of the Premier League's main title bout despite the late fireworks

At the end, after a final opposition assault crashed on the rocks of their team’s obstinate defence, the supporters of Manchester United greeted a goalless draw and the accompanying point with the swirling of scarves and the singing of songs.

This after a game to which their team had contributed almost nothing at all.

Welcome to Manchester football in April 2017. One team not confident enough to go after a game they really needed to win, the other not good enough to take advantage of what at times resembled an open red door.

It is not as simple as that, of course. Jose Mourinho’s United are down on numbers and down on energy. They have several big games still to come.

Maybe Mourinho thinks that Liverpool – currently in third place in the Premier League – will throw enough points overboard between now and the season’s end to let both Manchester clubs in to the Champions League places.

Anyone seeing Liverpool play recently may think that he is right.

Or maybe, with games at Arsenal and Tottenham on the horizon, the United manager believes the hill to be too steep anyway.

Maybe the Europa League – with United at the semi final stage – represents a more likely path in to Europe and, as such, this was a night to preserve emotional energy and an unbeaten league record that now stands at 24 games.

So, no, it is not as simple as all that but what is undisputed is that United’s approach to this night of football made for a very peculiar spectacle indeed.

Only the late sending-off of Marouane Fellaini and a disallowed City goal breathed any sense of life or occasion in to it at all.

We have seen many things on derby day in recent seasons but we have rarely seen anything like this, a derby with only one team playing.

It is not unusual to see Mourinho teams defend in big games and the Portuguese will doubtless argue that injury had robbed him of the players he needed to try and dominate this match.

So, yes, maybe we should have expected a bespoke Mourinho performance. Close it down and then chase hard for a victory on the counter towards the end.

Except we didn’t really get that. We just got the first bit.

As City began to run out of any ideas they may have had earlier, this was a game that seemed ready made for a late dart at unlikely glory by United. We have seen it so many times before.

But even before Fellaini’s red card rendered the closing moments of the game so naturally one-side, United were showing absolutely no urgency.

They were walking towards free-kicks, dawdling over corners and seemed utterly disinclined to place any pressure on City’s substitute goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Before half-time, the contest was equally one-sided but United did create two very good chances.

Claudio Bravo saved from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ander Herrera headed wide at the far post.

This appeared to hint at possibilities for United late in the game. Maybe there would be some vulnerability at the back end against a City team that looked out on its feet after a 120-minute FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday.

But if United’s players sense any opportunity then they didn’t chase it and almost certainly their reticence came on the back of clear instruction from the sidelines.

As the second half wore on, United’s record goal scorer Wayne Rooney remained on the bench and that told us everything about his future employment prospects in this parish and indeed the scope of United’s ambition.

So United went home with their pride and their unbeaten league record intact. Mourinho’s derby record in this first Old Trafford season reads a defeat, a win and a draw and he would have taken that at the start of a campaign many expected would herald the start of a City precession under Pep Guardiola.

Here, though, we watched two very underwhelming teams indeed. City were the better, of that there is no doubt.

They created some good chances but Sergio Aguero bookended the game by missing two of his own – one against the post and one wide – and that pretty much summed the thing up.

Watching it all unfold – or not unfold as the case may be – it was tempting to think back to a big game that took place here five years ago next week.

That ended City 1 United 0 and edged the home team towards their first Premier League title.

Here we were, half a decade and millions of pounds later, and this was a shoot-out for fourth place, not first. A look at the teams from that day and from this suggested little between them. Indeed, the City team of 2012 was perhaps a little stronger.

So that, and indeed the football we had to sit through last night, is indicative of how both these clubs have got as much wrong as they have right since the days we thought the top of the Premier League would flash red and sky blue for the rest of time.

A final thought is that two of City’s back four last night were bought by Mark Hughes, three managers ago. City did have a back four last night, by the way. They were the players not sweating much at the end.

The incident in the second half as well as Gabriel Jesus's disallowed goal caught the headlines, but there was much more to come out of Thursday night's fixture.

Lingard the diplomat

Marouane Fellaini's red card was rather daft. A clear headbutt on Manchester City's Sergio Aguero. It certainly livened up what had at times been a fairly uneventful second half.

What you may not have seen is Jesse Lingard's contribution following the event. Fellaini tried to confront referee Martin Atkinson. Never a good idea. Lingard knew that and gave the midfielder a pat on the back before appearing to say 'just go'.

It was just a shame that he couldn't have escorted the Belgian down the tunnel given Fellaini's attempts to also speak to fourth official Neil Swarbrick.

One City fan fails to spot offside flag

She must have thought that was it. The moment she'd been waiting for. City finally taking the lead. Unfortunately for City fans, Gabriel Jesus's header that beat David de Gea in the 91st was ruled out as the Brazilian striker was offside.

It took a couple of seconds for referee Atkinson to notice and he rightly blew his whistle to disallow the goal. However, one City fan, sporting the club's 1998-99 away shirt (black and yellow) didn't spot the flag and continued celebrating.

The moment when she finally realises makes for quite the picture.

A north London debate in Manchester

Arsene Wenger's future isn't just a topic for those in north London. No, it seems as though both set of supporters in Manchester want to be part of the debate too.

One supporter was photographed before the Manchester derby with a rather cryptic t-shirt. 'Wengerin.com, the best result for Manchester,' it read. A banner of support was also flown over the Etihad during the game.

Clearly both the t-shirt and the banner were made before City's FA Cup semi-final defeat by the Gunners. United are yet to beat Wenger's side this season too.

'Top level' Wayne benched again

Wayne Rooney was in quite a buoyant mood before the Manchester derby. He told the Sky Sports cameras that he was still capable of playing at the very 'top level' of the game and was out to prove himself.

The striker made that point following United's 2-0 away win at Burnley in which he scored. He possibly thought he'd have a chance of starting against City but that wasn't to be.

The bench was where he started the game and it was also where he finished it.

Black boots... back to basics for Rashford

Fancy footwear is the norm in modern football but Marcus Rashford made yet another bold statement in his very young career so far.

The striker said earlier this week: 'Nowadays with sponsorships it is a case of "there is the boot, you wear it" and there is not much you can do about it. However, if it was my choice it would always be black.'

Whether he had conversations with the marketing team at Nike or not, Rashford appeared at the Etihad wearing black boots albeit with a tinge of red. A man of his word.

'Is this a library, is this a library...'

A famous terrace chant sung often by away fans at the Etihad. They deserve credit for belting out Blue Moon for most of the match, but was it really acceptable for there to be so many empty seats on Thursday night?

Sportsmail's Dominic King pointed it out as did so many others. Was it that so many simply opted to watch it on the telly or that some tickets were being sold for £58? 54,176 was the official attendance given by City. The Etihad has a capacity of 55,097.

The atmosphere is something that City are attempting to address. Indeed, we reported earlier this week that Guardiola wants the club to find ways of improving the situation. He won't have been too happy to see the Etihad hadn't sold out for one of the biggest fixtures of the season.

Too close camera man, too close

The art of the close-up. The cameras are never far away from Mourinho whether it's at a stadium or outside The Lowry Hotel. He realises he is very much centre of attention and as manager of Manchester United he is is hot property.

But it seems as though someone wanted to get a little closer than usual at the Etihad. Just as he was about to take his seat in the away dugout, a camera was thrust in his face. It was, if you like, the extreme close-up.

Guardiola continues to get the better of Mourinho

The latest episode of Jose Mourinho vs Pep Guardiola was as over-hyped as you'd expect. Probably rightly too given what both are trying to achieve in the Premier League this season.

Mourinho hasn't thought twice about naming and shaming a number of his players as this season has progressed. Luke Shaw one week, Chris Smalling the next. Perhaps it's time to assess Mourinho with a bit more scrutiny.

His record against Guardiola is a good place to start. The pair first came up against each other when Inter Milan played Barcelona in the Champions League in September 2009. Mourinho manager of Inter and Guardiola in charge of Barcelona. 0-0 the score that night. But since then it's been a rather one-sided affair.

In their previous 18 meetings, Mourinho had won four, drawn six and lost eight. Make that one more draw now. Not exactly impressive.

United's possession the lowest since records began

Important to also note that Mourinho's United side had just 31 per cent possession on Thursday night. It was their lowest in Premier League history since records began.

For a manager who has openly criticised his rivals for supposedly boring football, his side failed to control any part of the Manchester derby. You could argue he failed to control his players given the lack of discipline Fellaini showed.

Have your cake and eat it, Anders

Anders Lindegaard clearly wanted to show his support to his former team by tweeting a picture of him at the match. 'Come on United,' accompanied the picture.

The Preston North End goalkeeper, who spent five years at Old Trafford, possibly should have looked at the cake he was about to eat before taking a picture.

Then again, it could have been a metaphor for wanting United to demolish City.

Half-and-half scarves are not only nonsense but they're also wrong...

They dominate the memorabilia stalls at every Premier League ground. They divide opinion but they still sell. It was exactly the case on Thursday night at the Etihad.

One of the fiercest rivalries in the country was made to look fairly tame as one football fan held up a half-and-half scarf. City on the left and United on the right. Even Mourinho didn't look too impressed as he had his photo taken with one fan wearing one of the scarves.

And if combining the two clubs wasn't worse enough, the scarf also referenced the 'Premiership', as opposed to the Premier League.

Anyone remotely interested in football would know that England's top division hasn't been called the 'Premiership' since the 2006-07 season when Carling sponsored the league.
