Louis van Gaal praises club doctor for spotting blood clot in Phil Jones' calf

* Louis van Gaal has praised Manchester United's club doctor Steve McNally
* McNally spotted a minor thrombosis in defender Phil Jones' calf
* The 23-year-old could now miss three Premier League fixtures
* The England international could also be absent for the two-legged Champions League play-off against Bruges

Louis van Gaal has praised Manchester United's club doctor Steve McNally for spotting the blood clot in Phil Jones's calf that has ruled the England defender out of action for at least three weeks.

Jones missed the opening-day win over Tottenham at Old Trafford after the problem was detected by Dr McNally last week and confirmed by a specialist on Friday.

The 23-year-old could now miss three Premier League fixtures as well as the two-legged Champions League play-off against Bruges while he remains under observation.

Van Gaal said: 'It was very peculiar because he had tightness in his calf the whole week and he kept training, but we have a very good doctor I think because this doctor discovered a minor thrombosis.

'We don't take the risk so we went to a specialist at the hospital for a second opinion.

'The specialist said we have a new medical treatment and we have to keep him out for three weeks and watch him.'

Chris Smalling impressed in central defence alongside Daley Blind against Spurs, and Van Gaal denied that Jones's injury will necessarily force him back into the transfer market for another right-sided centre half.

'No we have three centre backs,' he said.

'We have (Paddy) McNair, Jones and Smalling, but if he is much better than them then it is possible. We go for the best players and it has to be possible.'

Van Gaal also disagreed with suggestions that Tottenham's players looked sharper than United at Old Trafford.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino claimed that his team's fitness level was 'higher', but Van Gaal said: 'I don't agree because I think Tottenham could not cope with our pressure either and we scored because of that.

'They had the first chance of the game but after that they didn't create many chances. We neither, but I have said we could have played better.'

Atas kejelian McNally, Van Gaal pun melontarkan pujian.

Manchester United could have Michael Carrick back for Liverpool clash despite calf injury sustained on England duty

* Michael Carrick pulled out of England squad with calf injury on Monday
* Roy Hodgson confirms he may not be out for too long
* United are hopeful that midfielder will be fit to face Liverpool on Saturday
* The midfielder has played all six of United's games this season

Manchester United are hopeful midfielder Michael Carrick will be fit to face Liverpool this weekend despite pulling out of the England squad to face Switzerland.

The 34-year-old left England's camp with a calf injury and was at United's Carrington training ground today for treatment.

Carrick's England career has been hindered by niggling injuries and a disappointed Roy Hodgson said: 'It’s a major blow, not only to us but to Michael, who was looking forward to coming back.

Michael Carrick could be fit again as soon as Saturday despite pulling out of the England squad with an injury

'He might get over this very quickly and go on to play a big part for United and hardly miss a game.

'I hope it won’t be a recurring injury, but I don’t know. It’s a question for United and Michael, not for me.'

United, however, don't anticipate too big a problem and believe Carrick has a chance of making the squad to face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Carrick has 33 caps for his country but has not played for England since March's draw in Italy, missing the last three matches.

The influential midfielder has appeared in each of United's six games so far this season.

Manchester United left back Luke Shaw will remain in Holland to begin recovery after undergoing surgery on horror broken leg

* Luke Shaw suffered a double-fracture of his right leg on Tuesday night
* Injury occurred in Manchester United's Champions League defeat by PSV
* Shaw underwent surgery in an Eindhoven hospital and will remain there
* United express gratitude for the excellent care Shaw was receiving

Luke Shaw has undergone surgery for the horrific double leg break he suffered in Eindhoven and will be out of action for up to six months.

The Manchester United had an operation at the St Anna Ziekenhuis hospital on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning and will spend the next couple of days in Holland before he is allowed to fly home.

It is understood that the England defender suffered a clean break and could return before the end of the season, raising hopes that he will be fit for Euro 2016 next summer.

Shaw, 20, was left with a sickening double fracture of his right leg following a lunging tackle from PSV defender Hector Moreno in the first half of United's 2-1 Champions League defeat at the Philips Stadion.

Shaw's parents were at the game and rushed to be by his bedside to give their support. United chief executive Ed Woodward also visited him on Wednesday morning before the team returned to Manchester.

A club statement read: 'Luke underwent surgery for his injury last night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery.

Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support. A further update will be provided in due course.'

Manager Louis van Gaal attempted to comfort Shaw as he was carried down the tunnel on the stretcher and revealed after the game that the defender was in tears after the injury.

'It is awful. A boy who came to Manchester United at 18, had a difficult time and then plays fantastic in his second season. Then, it happens like this.

'When he came into the dressing room, I couldn't say anything to him because he had on an oxygen mask, and he was crying.

'I am not a doctor so I can not say how long he will be out but when you have a double fracture I think it is six months, it depends how it develops. He won't play in the (Champions League) group phase any more. I hope he can play this season.

Shaw was inundated with messages of support on social media as the football world rallied around the 20-year-old.

Shaw later took to Twitter himself to thank people for their kind messages and vowed to return from the injury even stronger. He wrote: 'Thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now. I will come back stronger.'

Moreno, who ironically suffered a broken leg playing against Van Gaal's Holland at last summer's World Cup, apologised over the horrific injury but insisted that it was an accident.

He said: 'I feel really sorry for him and I feel really bad because I know how it's like.

'This happened to me as well during the World Cup. I want to wish him all the best, but it wasn't my intention to injure him. I'd rather it didn't happen.'

THREE REDS INJURED FOR SUNDERLAND TEST

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair are the only three players injured for Manchester United’s Barclays Premier League match with Sunderland.

It is, of course, no surprise that Shaw misses the game following his terrible leg break during this month’s UEFA Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven. However, during his weekly interview with MUTV, the manager gave a positive update on the left-back’s mentality and rehabilitation.

"I spoke to him last night," van Gaal explained at the Aon Training Complex. "He was very positive. It’s amazing for me. There are very good signals. We have already started the rehabilitation. He shall be visited at home for the first electro muscle stimulants, so I think it’s very good."

Rojo made his first start of the season in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Southampton but the Argentinian unfortunately picked up a minor injury at St Mary’s that ruled him out of the midweek victory over Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup, and now this weekend’s clash with the Black Cats.

McNair also made his first appearance of the campaign as a substitute at St Mary’s, before also suffering a slight knock that means he will sit out Saturday’s big game at Old Trafford.

"We have three injuries – Rojo, Shaw and Paddy McNair," van Gaal told us. "It’s the same and we have to wait to see how the players recover because there are only two days between the two matches. Until now I don’t know how I’ll put the line-up."

Wayne Rooney will also miss England’s final two Euro 2016 qualification games due to an ankle injury and will not travel with Roy Hodgson’s squad to face Lithuania on Monday.
