PREVIEW : MANCHESTER UNITED V EVERTON

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,580,1726,1406

Both teams need a tonic... Everton make the short trip to Manchester from Merseyside, where they lost 3-1 at Liverpool in Saturday's local derby. Ronald Koeman’s side have otherwise been in fine form, losing just one of their last 12 matches prior to the weekend's defeat. United are also looking to bounce back from a disappointing result, albeit one that stretched the team's unbeaten run in the Premier League to 19 matches.

The race for a Champions League place: After the goalless draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, the Reds need a win to exert some pressure on the club’s rivals for a top-four finish, who all play 24 hours later. Victory against Everton would take Jose Mourinho's side to within two points of Manchester City, on the same number of games, before the Blues visit league leaders Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

Is there any early team news? Top goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Ander Herrera are poised to return to United's matchday squad after serving their domestic suspensions but Juan Mata is ruled out after the club confirmed on Friday night that the Spaniard has had surgery for a groin injury. In the blue corner, Everton's six injured players include right-back Seamus Coleman who infamously suffered a double leg fracture while playing for the Republic of Ireland against Wales last week. Argentina centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori could be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a knee problem that was also sustained on international duty, and ex-United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin will miss out on a return to Old Trafford.

What happened in the reverse fixture? The sides drew 1-1 in early December at Goodison Park when a late Leighton Baines penalty, given away by ex-Everton star Marouane Fellaini, cancelled out a first-half opener from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ander Herrera was unfortunate to fire a shot against the woodwork when the score was still 1-0 to the Reds.

Scouting report: Undeniably, the man to watch is the deadly Romelu Lukaku who has scored 21 Premier League goals so far this term. Behind the marksman lies an effective midfield, with the young duo of Tom Davies and Ross Barkley providing a supply line - the latter has produced seven assists this season.

Who’s the man in the middle? Neil Swarbrick will referee his third United match of 2016/17, having previously been in charge for the 3-1 win at Swansea City in the Premier League and the 4-0 home triumph over Wigan Athletic in the Emirates FA Cup.

How's the head-to-head record? United are unbeaten in four meetings with Everton and have only lost 8 times in 49 Premier League games against the Blues, winning 33 and drawing the other 8. The most memorable moment in recent times was Anthony Martial’s last-minute winner to make it 2-1 to United in last season's FA Cup semi-final, a pivotal goal which booked another Wembley outing for the Reds.

When do the Toffees tend to score? United will have to be defensively focused in the latter stages of the game as 42 per cent of Everton’s Premier League goals this season have come between the 75th and 90th minutes. The Reds' most prolific period is between the 30th and 45th minutes with 31 per cent of the side's strikes being registered then.

EARLY TEAM NEWS FOR UNITED V EVERTON

Jose Mourinho will field the strongest side he can in Tuesday's home match against Everton - and in the remaining Premier League games while a top-four finish is still achievable.

Despite being held 0-0 by West Bromwich Albion this weekend, the Reds did not lose any ground on rivals Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for a Champions League place as those two sides drew 2-2 when they met on Sunday.

"Against Everton, we’ll try to play our best team and try to win the match," said Mourinho after Saturday's stalemate with West Brom. "After Everton, we go to Sunderland with the same perspective. After Sunderland, comes the Europa League and then I don’t know.

"It’s then possible you see me play in the Premier League with a team where I’m going to protect the players I consider fundamental for the Europa League. But only if the results in the next matches put us in the situation where mathematically it becomes almost impossible to do it [finish in the top four].

"I go with mathematics. Until it’s mathematically impossible, we keep trying and, because this week is a week without the Europa League, we have nothing to think about Europe so this week is easy from the focus point of view.

"We have to play Everton and Sunderland and these two matches are where we have to go for them. We’re thinking about the Premier League and nothing else. After the match against Sunderland, we have Anderlecht. The quarter-finals of the Europa League are very important for us."

Mourinho has hinted Zlatan Ibrahimovic may play against the Toffees on Tuesday night after completing his suspension but he admits there is no guarantee the United striker would have broken the duck against the Baggies.

"We had matches here with Zlatan where we drew," recalled the manager. "He missed a penalty in the game against Bournemouth and missed chances like other people did too.

"I cannot say now that if Zlatan and Juan Mata had played on Saturday, we would have won the game. I cannot say that at all. What I can say is Jones and Smalling wouldn’t play better than Bailly and Rojo did and Pogba and Herrera couldn’t play better than what Fellaini and Carrick did."

Paul Pogba was among a group of United players training on the Old Trafford pitch following the West Brom match but Mourinho could not confirm if the Frenchman would face Everton.

"I don’t know about Pogba," he said. "I think Mata is out for a long time, Jones and Smalling for a long time, but I cannot say on Pogba. I cannot say he is ready for Tuesday because I don’t know. I don’t think he is such a long-term injury like the others."

UNITED PLAYERS PREVIEW EVERTON MATCH

Manchester United face Everton in the Premier League tonight, kicking off at 20:00 BST with three vital Premier League points up for grabs. Here, you can read what two of Jose Mourinho's men have been saying ahead of the action…

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN

The midfield Armenian features on the cover of the official match programme, United Review, and is the subject of an exclusive five-page interview inside it.

Henrikh takes a moment during the Q&A to send his best wishes to Everton’s Seamus Coleman, who suffered a terrible leg fracture while playing for the Republic of Ireland in the recent international break.

“Yes, I have seen the injury to Coleman and I feel sorry for him,” Mkhitaryan explains. “I wish him a very quick recovery. It was a very bad injury and, when I saw the footage of it, I felt very bad about it. I want to support him and tell him to stay strong and to come back as swiftly as he can."

Expanding on the tackle that led to Coleman's long-term injury, Micki says: “It is not nice to see but also it is football. Danger is a part of the game and you have to be ready for it, of course not that kind of injury as it is pretty rare, but that is football. He could not have thought that something would happen like this. It was a battle between him and the opponent and he got a very bad injury.”

ASHLEY YOUNG

The versatile Reds star spoke to MUTV on Monday and was asked about the impending return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has now completed his three-match domestic ban.

“It will be nice to have him back,” Youngy said. “It will be tactically different to Marcus Rashford who runs in behind defenders. Ibra will do that as well but he is also the focal point. With his hold-up play, people will run off him and as long as we have people threatening in between then teams will drop off and that gives us more space to play. That is when we really start to play and move. You’ve seen the movement of the forward line is fantastic and unplayable at times. As long as everyone is at it then we will be fully ready when Everton come to Old Trafford.”

One man who won’t play at Old Trafford is Morgan Schneiderlin, the Frenchman who left United for Everton in January and is currently struggling with an injury. Despite that knock, Young is pleased that his former team-mate has made a bright start at Goodison Park. “Morgan is a fantastic player and these things happen in football, where things don’t work out, but he has gone to a great club and he has put his mark down already in the short time that he has been there,” Ashley said.

TEAM NEWS: MANCHESTER UNITED V EVERTON

Jose Mourinho has revealed his Manchester United team to face Everton in tonight’s Premier League game at Old Trafford (kick-off 20:00 BST).

The boss has made three changes from Saturday’s goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind all returning.

Top scorer Ibrahimovic and midfielder Herrera are back after completing domestic suspensions, in place of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial, who are selected among a strong group of substitutes. While Antonio Valencia, United’s Player of the Month for March, is absent along with captain Wayne Rooney, as Blind comes in at left-back, with Ashley Young switching to the right side of the defence.

Paul Pogba is also back in the matchday squad, on the bench, after a spell out with a hamstring injury but Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata all remain on the sidelines.

Michael Carrick will captain the side and start in midfield alongside Marouane Fellaini, who plays against his former club after impressing against the Baggies last weekend.

Here is the Reds team in full…

United: De Gea, Young, Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Fellaini, Carrick (c), Lingard, Herrera, Rashford, Ibrahimovic. Substitutes: Romero, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Shaw, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Martial.

Everton have made two changes from Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Liverpool in the Merseyside derby as Kevin Mirallas and Gareth Barry come in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Matthew Pennington.

Everton XI: Robles, Holgate, Jagielka, A.Williams, Baines, Barry, Davies, Gueye, Mirallas, Lukaku, Barkley.
Substitutes: Stekelenburg, J.Williams, Kenny, Pennington, Valencia, Calvert-Lewin, Lookman.

Kecewa berat nonton MU td malam,,wlwpun cuma nonton gol Ibra n 4 menit injury time. Main di Old Trafford lwn club yg biasa2 aja dua2nya berakhir imbang. Heran ko susah bgd ya MU bikin gol,,wlwpun Ibra,Pogba,n Herrera udah balik lagi.
Mdh2'an Mou cepat menemukan solusinya,,biar MU bs menang di next match EPL vs Sunderland.

Hahaha...

MOURINHO'S VERDICT ON EVERTON DRAW

Jose Mourinho accepted his Manchester United team "didn't play very well" in Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Everton in the Premier League, although he felt his side might have won had the video assistant referee (VAR) system been in place to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic's headed 'goal'.

Here's what the manager had to say in his first post-match interview with BT Sport...

OVERALL REFLECTION
"The performance was not very good but the spirit in the second half was phenomenal. And with some players really in trouble, some by the physical point of view, some others clearly with the confidence levels low and difficult to perform better. They fought until the last second and with a VAR, we win this game 2-1 because it was not an offside."

NO CRITICISM OF THE OFFICIALS
"It was a difficult one for the linesman. I am not a critic of him at all. When the VAR comes, it will help everyone, especially them, especially the linesmen and the referees. If they (the video assistant referee) has any doubts, then the advantage should go to the team that attacks. From what I saw just now on the computer, it was not an offside but they are the experts. But even so, if there is a big doubt, it is a goal. But again, I repeat I'm not at all a critic of the linesman, not at all. I just think it will be welcomed by everyone, especially them because for them it's not good when they make mistakes, even little ones like this one."

FAMILIAR STORY IN HOME MATCHES

"I have deja vu in many things but I have to admit we played better football in some other matches. Did we have chances? Yes. Not a dozen, a few. Did we hit the post as always? Yes. Did the opponent goalkeeper play very well as always? Yes. Did one decision go against us? Yes but I want to repeat again, I don't want to blame him. Was the opponent ultra defensive as always? Yes but we didn't play very well. We had some players in trouble, especially by the confidence point of view. Some guys are suffering a little bit. But the spirit was good, the pride was there, the Manchester United way of fighting was there, especially in the second half that followed a first half that was not good at all."

Re: [EPL] Manchester United 1-1 Everton

Manchester United 1-1 Everton SEVEN THINGS WE LEARNED: Jose Mourinho still struggling to find a winning combination while Romelu Lukaku improves from derby performance

* Manchester United rescued a late 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against Everton
* Phil Jagielka looked to have won the game for the visitors with his first half flick
* However Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a stoppage time penalty to save the hosts
* Everton centre back Ashley Williams was sent off for handling the ball

Manchester United's poor home form continued on Tuesday night as they rescued a 1-1 draw against Everton.

Phil Jagielka scored what looked like the only goal with a clever flick through David de Gea's legs, as Jose Mourinho was left frustrated having left Wayne Rooney out of his squad and started with Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the bench. However a point was rescued by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late penalty.

Here, Sportsmail's JOE BERNSTEIN looks at seven key talking points coming out of the Premier League clash.

SQUARE PEGS IN ROUND HOLES FOR UNITED

Jose Mourinho is putting square pegs in round holes as he struggles to find a winning combination at Old Trafford. Winger Ashley Young played both right and left-back, Marcus Rashford was on the wing to make space for Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera started at No10 with Henrikh Mkhitaryan dropped to the bench and ended at right-back, neither his position. The tempo was higher than Saturday's drab draw against West Brom, but not by much.

https://s10.postimg.org/pyt2eu015/3E...9133969435.jpg
[*]Winger Ashley Young played both right and left-back on Tuesday night at Old Trafford

VAN DER SAR IS UNIMPRESSED

Goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar was guest speaker to United corporates before kick off, a reminder of the days when United won Premier League and Champions League titles. After regaling the audience with tales about Cristiano Ronaldo enlisting him for extra free-kick practise, van der Sar didn't mince his words when asked to reflect on United's season. 'Can I be honest? Disappointing. Fifth place is disappointing for a club like this.'

WILLIAMS THE WARRIOR

Ashley Williams is just the sort of grizzly centre-half you want squaring up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Zlatan looked destined for a fairytale return when he burst clear in the opening minutes until Williams slid in to deny him with the perfect defender's tackle. The 32-year-old Wales captain was a warrior in both penalty areas and played a vital part in Phil Jagielka's opening goal for Everton. Alas, right at the end, his handball and red card, meant he was the villain and Zlatan the late hero.

LUKAKU MUCH IMPROVED FROM DERBY DAY

Romelu Lukaku was sold by Mourinho at Chelsea after being accused of not being motivated enough. There was no lacking his motivation last night as the Belgian striker gave a vastly improved performance on his Merseyside derby showing, roughing up Marcos Rojo for pace and power. His movement was lively too, the only thing that let him down was his shooting boots.

NEW DAVIES CONTRACT IS HUGE FOR EVERTON

Someone should have a close look at Tom Davies' birth certificate. The Everton midfielder doesn't play or look like an 18-year-old, having the maturity and game management skills to run rings around Marouane Fellaini in the engine room, aided by the excellent Idrissa Gueye. Forget Koeman, Lukaku and Barkley's futures, Everton's biggest win of the campaign was signing Davies up to a new five-year contract this week.

SHAW CAN STILL BE KEY FOR MOURINHO

Luke Shaw received a huge cheer from supporters inside Old Trafford when he came on with 25 minutes left for only his second Premier League appearance since October. Within 60 seconds he had bombed to the Everton byline and given the visitors more problems from open play than Daley Blind or Ashley Young had managed in an hour. Shaw was a key player for United under Louis van Gaal until his broken leg last season. Other left-backs at Mourinho's disposal may be better and more consistent defenders but none are a more potent weapon in which to help open up packed defences.

https://s10.postimg.org/fks8llfah/3E...1339539340.jpg
Luke Shaw received a huge cheer from the home fans when he came on with 25 minutes left

UNITED HARDLY INVINCIBLE

In terms of long, unbeaten runs, Manchester United's current 20-game Premier League streak is unlikely to go down in history. Mourinho's men haven't lost since Chelsea on October 23 and yet have only climbed from seventh to fifth, and that could become sixth on Wednesday night should Arsenal beat West Ham. Ten of the 20 games have been draws and they've scored a modest 34 goals during the run. You have to admire Mourinho's never-say-die attitude typified by Ibrahimovic's injury-time equaliser against Everton but Invincibles, they are not.

Manchester United 1-1 Everton - PLAYER RATINGS: Idrissa Gueye causes Red Devils troubles but Marcos Rojo struggles for the hosts

* Late Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal rescued Manchester United a point against Everton
* Phil Jagielka had put the Toffees in front, while Ashley Williams was sent off
* Sportsmail rates the individual performances of the players on show

Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck a stoppage-time penalty as Manchester United rescued a draw from their home clash with Everton.

United fell behind in the first half, when Phil Jagielka bundled home, and saw Ibrahimovic have a goal chalked off for a debatable offside in the second period.

Then, late in added time, Ashley Williams blocked Luke Shaw's shot with his arm. Williams was sent off and Ibrahimovic levelled from the spot. Sportsmail rates the players' efforts...

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)

David de Gea 5.5

Rarely called into action, perhaps could have done better with Jagielka's goal.

Ashley Young 5.5

Occasionally threatening going forwards, often stuck in defensive roles.

Eric Bailly 7

Solid enough at the back, particularly in one-on-one situations with Lukaku.

Marcos Rojo 5.5

Looked shaky for much of the game, offering Everton's forwards a chance.

https://s14.postimg.org/r9cxnsp5d/3E...1341282008.jpg
Marcos Rojo endured a difficult evening at the heart of the Manchester United defence

Daley Blind 6

A good free-kick saved in the first half, unfortunate to be the one subbed.

Marouane Fellaini 5

Late into challenges, clumsy with ball at feet... not a performance to remember.

Michael Carrick 6

Another peculiar choice of substitution after remaining composed throughout.

Jesse Lingard 6

Looked for the spectacular a little too often.

Ander Herrera 6.5

Tidy, nimble, agile and hit the bar. United will be glad to have him back.

https://s14.postimg.org/gwqn1pvm9/3E...1341318459.jpg
Ander Herrera was tricky and nimble for United and also hit the crossbar in the first half

Marcus Rashford 6.5

Shifted out wide he couldn't find the goalscoring chance he wanted.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6

Missed two gilt-edged chances, scored two, had one cancelled out.

Subs: Shaw (for Young 65, 7), Pogba (for Blind 45, 6), Mkhitaryan (for Carrick 65, 6)

Subs unused: Romero, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Martial
