Default Re: [UEL] Celta Vigo 0-1 Manchester United

Celta Vigo 0-1 Manchester United - PLAYER RATINGS: Paul Pogba was pillar of strength and Marcus Rashford delivered another Euro stunner

* Rashford (7.5) capped an impressive display with the winner in the second half
* Paul Pogba (8) was one of the leaders and showed plenty of drive from midfield
* Daley Blind (7.5) competed manfully against the physical bulk of John Guidetti

Marcus Rashford's splendid free-kick secured Manchester United a hard-fought win at Celta Vigo to edge Jose Mourinho's men closer to the Europa League final.

England's last European representatives have travelled far and wide in their bid to win the only major continental trophy to have eluded them in their success-laden history.

Europa League glory also offers a route back to the Champions League - an increasingly important option given their Premier League struggles - and Mourinho's men are in the driving seat of this semi-final after Rashford's fine free-kick secured a 1-0 first-leg win at Celta.

Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein rated the players on Thursday night.

Manchester United (4-1-4-1)

Sergio Romero 6

Given the nod over David de Gea and though his kicking was a bit dodgy, he commanded his penalty area as Mourinho likes. One nice tip over from Sisto's shot.

Antonio Valencia 7

The 31-year-old has arguably been United’s most consistent player this season and was a steady influence on a potentially awkward night

Eric Bailly 6

Not his usual commanding self after being rushed back from Sunday’s injury. Lost the run of Wass and lucky the Celta player headed wide

Daley Blind 7.5

Read the game brilliantly and competed manfully against the physical bulk of John Guidetti. Made a terrific block to deny the Swede.

Defender Daley Blind competed manfully, here coming up against Celta's Hugo Mallo

Matteo Darmian 6

Stuck to his task gamely though Celta's movement and attacking interplay left him out of position at times

Ander Herrera 6

Sat deepest of United’s midfield players, but his mobility didn’t stop Celta swarming forward as Mourinho would have wished

Jesse Lingard 6

Missed two good chances to score in the first half, failing to connect with Mkhitaryan’s cross and then shooting at Alvarez. Showed good energy in second half.

Marouane Fellaini 6.5

Always an option to hit with the long ball and helped out defensively too. Ironically, might not have played if available for Arsenal on Sunday. Booked.

Paul Pogba 8

Impressive return after injury. Looked one of the team’s leaders and showed plenty of drive from midfield. Celta markers were bouncing off him. Booked.

Paul Pogba was one of the team’s leaders and showed plenty of drive from midfield

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6

So often United’s Euro specialist, he failed to make the most of the possession he received. Shot against Alvarez when set up by Pogba. Substituted.

Marcus Rashford 7.5

His big reputation just got bigger after a stunning free-kick goal that arced away from Alvarez. Offered pace and finesse, and had another curler saved by the goalkeeper. Substituted.

Striker Marcus Rashford was a constant threat on the night with his pace and finesse

Substitutes

Ashley Young (for Mkhitaryan 78) 6

Brought on to help United shut up shop as a virtual left wing-back but went off himself

Anthony Martial (for Rashford 80) 6

Went up top where he would like to play more regularly

Chris Smalling (for Young 89)

Subs unused: David de Gea (Gk), Juan Mata, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney

Manager: Jose Mourinho 7

Continues to juggle the Premier League and Europa League admirably. Brought Pogba back into the fray at exactly the right time
