Default Re: Man United U-23 Matches 2016/17

Manchester United U23 1-3 Manchester City U23: Paolo Fernandes wraps up victory for visitors against 10-man neighbours

* Regan Poole was sent off early on for Manchester United Under 23s on Monday
* Brahim Diaz gave Manchester City the lead before Sean Goss hit back for hosts
* Isaac Buckley-Ricketts put City in front before Paolo Fernandes added a third

The way this was won will have Pep Guardiola purring when Manchester City’s manager is handed the edited highlights.

Manchester United were briefly in the ascendancy having equalised through Sean Goss early in the second half. The agitated Nicky Butt urged his side forward in search of another before Devante Redmond loosely gave away possession 80 yards from their own goal.

From there City were off, back to front and in Joel Pereira’s net within five seconds. Jadon Sancho - astonishingly still only 16 - started the swift counter, before moving on to Paolo Fernandes.

City flew, Brahim Diaz almost rounding the goalkeeper, the ball eventually dropping for 18-year-old Isaac Buckley-Ricketts. His effort flashed past Pereira, back from a loan spell at Belenenses this week to facilitate Sam Johnstone’s switch to Aston Villa.

Guardiola will certainly be shown that blistering few moments of pace on the ball and movement off it. This is what he means when the Catalan talks of his desire to see every level of their academy playing as the first team is trying.

That quartet were brilliant as the blue half of the this city won the mini-derby, Fernandes smashing a third late on.

They had enjoyed a man advantage for much of the night at Leigh Sports Village, however, after Reegan Poole saw red for a two-footed lunge on the fleet-footed Fernandes in the 13th minute.

Tempers momentarily flared and Butt - United 23s’ interim boss - did not look at the central defender as he trudged off.

United had struggled to exert much pressure before then but held on until just after the break. Fernandes wonderfully drove towards the byline, bamboozling Sadiq El Fitouri in the 50th minute and found Diaz to stroke back where the cross had come from.

Diaz earlier clipped a post when dancing past three home defenders after coming away from his station on the right. City’s attackers are frightening when they get going.

Despite going down to 10-men, Manchester United found an equaliser through Sean Goss

City did concede six minutes after taking the lead though, with the impressive Sean Goss breaking from midfield to latch onto Demetri Mitchell’s fine cross and stab beyond Angus Gunn.

The animated Butt punched the air but would only see his side level until the hour mark as City capitalised on Redmond’s laxness in possession.

Matthew Olusunde was then punished by Fernandes on attempting to dribble out from the back, while Sancho struck a post when slipped through by Diaz. The second-half performance was truly slick, with United obviously inhibited by the early sending off.

City boss Simon Davies left Leigh happy but Guardiola’s real interest will be peaked when he watches that fabulous five seconds.

Tensions arose when Regan Poole was sent off for a challenge on Fernandes
