Default Re: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford had a 'special debut' for Manchester United and Paul Scholes says 'hopefully his career will kick on from here'

* Marcus Rashford had 'special debut' as Manchester United beat Midtjylland
* Rashford was thrust into starting line-up when Anthony Martial got injured
* The 18-year-old scored twice as United made it to last-16 of Europa League
* Paul Scholes says he hopes Rashford's career will 'kick on from here'

Marcus Rashford's senior debut for Manchester United in the 5-1 victory over Midtjylland on Thursday could be the start of something great, according to Paul Scholes.

Rashford was thrust into the United starting line-up when striker Anthony Martial suffered a hamstring injury in the warm-up.

The 18-year-old didn't shy away from the opportunity and scored twice in front of the 58,609 spectators in attendance at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford scored twice in Manchester United's 5-1 win against Midtjylland at Old Trafford on Thursday

Scholes scored twice on his debut for United in the 2-1 League Cup win over Port Vale in 1994.

He said that Rashford's first appearance for Louis van Gaal's side was hopefully the starting point of long career at the top level of football.

Asked by Jake Humphrey, who was fronting BT Sport's coverage of the Europa League tie, how much Rashford impressed, Scholes said: 'This club is all about bring young players through [and] we've seen a special debut and hopefully his career will kick on from here.

Paul Scholes said Rashford's debut was 'special' and hopes he can kick on and have a successful career

'It was worrying at the start of the game [when Martial couldn't play] because he's a top centre forward.

'But for Rashford that's what it's all about coming in and taking your chances. There were two good goals. He showed awareness and they two proper centre forward goals.'

Rashford went on Twitter after the game to his rather modest - at the moment - following of more than 6,500.

He wrote: 'A dream debut, amazing feeling to score twice and contribute to the team. Onto the next round.'

The Red Devils host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday and Rashford could feature.

Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who joined Scholes on BT Sport, warned the Gunners that if he does play then they will need to be alert.

He added: Honestly as quick and powerful as he is he could be a real problem for Arsenal to deal with.'
