Default Re: Bastian Schweinsteiger

Ana Ivanovic knocked out at Edgbaston by Michelle Larcher de Brito despite boyfriend Bastian Schweinsteiger cheering her on
  • Ana Ivanovic lost in her Aegon Championships clash on Wednesday
  • The second seed was beaten by Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-4, 3-6, 7-6
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger was in the crowd cheering on his girlfriend

Defending Edgbaston champion Ana Ivanovic was watched by new boyfriend Bastian Schweinsteiger as she crashed out of this year's tournament to world No 135 Michelle Larcher de Brito.

An animated Schweinsteiger did his best to encourage Ivanovic with a series of claps, cheers and fist-pumps but it was all in vain as De Brito edged a tight second round match 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

Ivanovic's relationship with the Bayern Munich and Germany World-Cup winning footballer has been public knowledge since the French Open.

The Germany international couldn't watch at times during the tense affair at Edgbaston

But his presence in Birmingham brought the second seed little luck as De Brito deservedly caused an upset by being the more aggressive player.

Schweinsteiger, clad in dark shirt and black baseball cap, watched forlornly as the Portuguese qualifier dominated the opening set to win it 6-4.

But he was up on his feet as his beau recovered to take the second 6-3, the pair exchanging furtive glances at key moments.

World No 7 Ivanovic twice went a break-up in the deciding set but failed to capitalise on serving for the match at 5-4.

A clearly frustrated Ivanovic argues with the umpire after a call went against her

De Brito, world No 135, looked delighted after clinching the win against her highly-ranked opponent

In the deciding tie-break, a fidgety Schweinsteiger could barely bring himself to watch. De Brito missed two match points at 6-4 but didn't have to do anything to win the next one, Ivanovic double-faulting at 6-7 to surrrender the match.

As a delighted De Brito did a post-match interview courtside, 'I had nothing to lose,' she said, Ivanovic fled quickly to find a quiet corner and send a text message, Schweinsteiger perhaps?

The 30-year-old Schweinsteiger has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United who are managed by his former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal, with former German World Cup winning-skipper Lothar Matthaus saying he should give it 'serious consideration.'

Despite the heated affair both players showed good sportsmanship as they shook hands at the end
