Default Re: Memphis Depay

Manchester United 'accelerate plans to re-sign Memphis Depay in January after Cristiano Ronaldo's contract was torn up' with Barcelona 'keen to offload the Dutchman in January'

* Memphis Depay was previously signed by Manchester United at end of 2014-15
* However, the Dutchman failed to deliver on his early career promise at PSV
* Was swiftly offloaded before rebuilding his career and reputation with Lyon
* His time at Barcelona has proved difficult having fallen down the pecking order
* Made return from injury for Holland's win over Senegal at the World Cup

Manchester United are reportedly in the market to sensationally re-sign Memphis Depay.

The Dutchman, who joined United from PSV ahead of the 2015-16 campaign, arrived in the north-west to much fanfare and promise but failed deliver before being offloaded to Lyon in 2017.

Having rebuilt his career somewhat with Lyon, Depay once again achieved a dream move to one of the giants of world football when he signed for Barcelona last year.

It was a move that initially bore some fruit, with the Dutchman carrying over his performances from Ligue 1 to Spain but it has since turned sour, with Xavi Hernandez and the club's vocal supporters appearing to be on the same page regarding his future place at the club.

According to Spanish publication Sport, United will look to offer him a route out of the club this January as they look to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who has had his contracted terminated following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan last week.

The report states that United have been working at re-signing the forward, with Barcelona certain to sign off on his departure. The Catalans are reportedly 'clear' that he must leave this winter.

As with all Barcelona players at present, there are obvious contract issues that hang over their heads, a reason cited for why he did not move to Juventus during the summer, a move that was mooted throughout July and much of August.

With six months left on his contract from January, it is unlikely to prove as much of a stumbling block as it did during the summer. Sport state that should Depay receive a satisfactory financial offer from United, then he will waive the money owed to him for the few months left on his Barcelona deal.

Memphis Depay is reportedly being chased by Manchester United for them to re-sign him in January. The Dutchman struggled during his spell with the club across 2015-16 and early on in 2016-17 before being loaned out and then sold on. Despite arriving to much fanfare, Depay struggled to set the world slight with his performances. The forward has struggled for game time at Barcelona through a combination of injury and falling down the pecking order

However, a stumbling block for United could prove to arrive in the shape of the Champions League, with one of Depay's reported conditions for his next club is participation in Europe's elite competition.

Chelsea, another party reported to be interested in the 28-year-old, can of course meet such demands.

The Spanish publication state that another condition is requisite financial incentive, with the former PSV man said to have asked Juventus for £6m a year this summer.

Having only appeared three times for Barcelona this season, largely owing to a thigh injury, Depay has particularly struggled this campaign with the world cup providing an opportunity for him to put himself in the shop window.

Speaking after Holland's opener with Senegal on Monday, which they won 2-0, Depay rejected all talk of transfer speculation while the World Cup was ongoing.

'The injury has been hard, but I'm already recovered and I'm enjoying a World Cup,' he said.

'I don't want to think about the past, I'm focused on the World Cup. I also don't want to think beyond this competition. I don't know what will happen after the World Cup.'

He added: 'I am very happy to play again. I have needed a long time to reappear.

'It hasn't been easy mentally, but I've worked hard to get there and I've played half an hour. It's a step. It's incredible to play football again.'

Were he to sign, United fans would be hoping for a better return this time around. In his 45 games in his first season, he only scored seven times, laying on a further six.

In his eight appearances the next year, he did not register a goal or assist before being offloaded to Lyon, initially on loan before joining them permanently for £22m.
