Manchester United youngsters crashed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup semi-finals following a penalty shootout defeat by Oldham at Leigh Sports Village.

Matthew Olosunde opened the scoring for the Premier League club in the first-half before Jake Cassidy equalised after the interval to send the game to penalties.

Scott McTominay and Demi Mitchell missed their spot kicks to send Oldham through to a final showdown with Everton.

The Latics fielded a relatively experienced side and came close to taking the lead through Darius Osei, Carl Winchester and Marc Klok in the first-half.

Winchester was also unfortunate not to earn a penalty on 28minutes after being felled by Sadiq El Fitouri in the area.

United took the lead against the run of play when Olosunde, who usually plays in defence, met Regan Poole's inviting cross to score a close-range volley for his first goal for the club.

The visitors equalised after the interval when Cassidy headed Osei's deep cross into the corner, which eventually forced a penalty shootout after United missed several chances to regain the lead.

Oldham keeper Chris Kettings saved McTominay's opening spot-kick only for Cassidy to slip and miss the chance to give his side an early advantage.

However, Mitchell's cheeky attempt backfired after his shot cleared the crossbar - leaving Kallum Mantack to become Oldham's hero by scoring the winning penalty to set up a date with Everton on Wednesday.
