Default Re: Man United U-23 Matches 2016/17

Manchester United's reserves show Jose Mourinho's side how it's done in 1-0 win against Liverpool counterparts

* Manchester United reserves beat Liverpool's 1-0 with dramatic late goal
* Matty Willock scored with header in stoppage time to claim bragging rights
* Match was tightly fought contest with United coming on strong in final minutes

Manchester United's reserves managed to show Jose Mourinho's senior side how it is supposed to be done against Liverpool.

A Matty Willock header in stoppage time secured Nicky Butt's team a win against their Merseyside counterparts at Anfield.

Sean Goss was the man to provide the killer ball and atoned for an earlier penalty miss, saved by goalkeeper Shamal George.

The clash between the old rivals was a fiercely fought contest in a largely even affair

The first half was a cagey affair with both teams battling hard for ascendency but failing to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Jack Dunn and Brooks Lennon offered some threat for the hosts in the second 45 minutes as Josh Harrop and Goss continued to impress at the other end.

Gribbin latched on to a Goss pass and was upended in the box for a penalty with 15 minutes remaining.

Where Manchester United failed to be Liverpool at Old Trafford their reserves fared better

George parried the side-footed spot kick away as the home side breathed a sigh of relief.

With stamina beginning to wane for both teams, the match started to open up with more room for the attacking players.

Ultimately it was a free-kick which proved decisive as Goss whipped a ball perfectly onto the head of Willock who wheeled away to celebrate the dramatic winner.
