Default Re: Man United U-23 Matches 2016/17

Tampaknya tim reserves lebih beruntung dibanding tim senior

RESERVES: LIVERPOOL 0 UNITED 1

Premier League 2 | Anfield | Scorers: Willock 93

Matty Willock rewarded Manchester United for a strong ending to a tight affair against Liverpool at Anfield by heading home the winner in stoppage time.

Sean Goss, who had earlier seen a penalty saved by Shamal George, provided the assist as Nicky Butt's men showed great resilience and stamina to upset the Merseysiders.

The two teams cancelled each other out completely in the first half with an uneventful 45 minutes punctuated only by a series of free-kicks. Joe Riley was back after an injury lay-off to provide some verve from right-back but there was nothing to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges.

Matty Willock did have a shot blocked at source in the 15th minute by Tom Brewitt after a sweeping pass by Axel Tuanzebe picked out Callum Gribbin on the right and the midfielder played a neat ball inside. That was the closest United came to scoring in the opening half with even the corners at both ends terribly disappointing.

The hosts fared little better with Sam Hart, a former United schoolboy, blazing into the stands from long range after shrugging Gribbin aside to at least register a shot to count in the match statistics. The Hart attempt came four minutes before the break and it is fair to say everybody present at Anfield was hoping for more action in the second half.

Liverpool made two changes at the interval and started to get on top with Jack Dunn producing a wild effort and Brooks Lennon failing to trouble Joel Pereira, who dived to produce a comfortable save. Matthew Olosunde was introduced for Devonte Redmond but Pereira was able to continue despite requiring treatment after being clattered into by Nathan Phillips.

Pereira was definitely the busier of the two keepers, clutching Olosunde's header towards his own goal, and also the first genuine shot on target by Matthew Virtue on 65 minutes. It sparked some pressure from Butt's side with Gribbin latching onto a Josh Harrop through ball, only to side-foot his finish too close to George. Sean Goss then fired a free-kick off target after he was fouled by Brewitt on the edge of the box when moving onto another Harrop pass.

Things really heated up when Gribbin chased a Goss pass and ran clean through on goal before being up-ended by substitute Kane Lewis in the 75th minute. The home side accused the midfielder of diving but the referee pointed to the spot and Lewis escaped with a yellow card rather than a red. With the hosts still fuming, Goss stepped up but was denied by a fine one-handed stop by George.

The match finally opened up as Corey Whelan tested Pereira and Olosunde produced an inviting cross at the other end that was crying out for a finish. United grew stronger as the half wore on and looked more like the champions of last season. Tuanzebe's lung-busting run took him deep into opposition territory, only for his cut-back to fall a little behind DJ Buffonge and the substitute's shot was deflected wide.

From the corner, Tuanzebe managed to head goalwards, only for the ball to be cleared but there was still a sting in the tail. The visitors won a free-kick on the left and Goss delivered, right onto the head of Willock, who nodded home to finally break the deadlock. Leaders Everton are next up but this result will cheer everybody associated with United.

United: J.Pereira; Riley (Kehinde 85), Tuanzebe, Poole, Mitchell; Goss, Redmond (Olosunde 56); Gribbin (Buffonge 85), Willock, Harrop; McTominay. Subs not used: O’Hara, Scott.
