Default Re: [EPL] Sunderland vs Manchester United

PREVIEW : SUNDERLAND V MANCHESTER UNITED

Three points are essential... Following consecutive home draws with West Brom and Everton, United need a win to keep a push for the top four alive. Sunderland are in dire need of points themselves as they currently sit bottom of the table and are facing a real battle against relegation.

A familiar face in the home dug-out... Former Reds manager David Moyes is in charge of the Black Cats and he will be out to avenge their 3-1 defeat in December, which was his first return to Old Trafford after leaving the club.

What is the latest team news? Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney are doubts but Antonio Valencia could return after being rested for the game against Everton when Luke Shaw came off the bench to good effect. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata are all set to miss out due to injury. Adnan Januzaj is ineligible for Sunderland due to the terms of his loan from United but Donald Love, John O'Shea and Darron Gibson could all come up against their old employers. Another ex-Reds player, Paddy McNair, is injured, along with Duncan Watmore, Jan Kirchhoff and Steven Pienaar. Lee Cattermole returned at Leicester City on Tuesday with Victor Anichebe fit enough to come on as a substitute.

What happened in the reverse fixture? United's 3-1 win will always be remembered for Henrikh Mkhitaryan's amazing scorpion-kick goal. Daley Blind and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were also on the scoresheet before Fabio Borini smashed in a spectacular consolation effort.

Stat attack The Wearsiders have not scored for six successive matches and the only game in the last 10 outings they scored in was the remarkable 4-0 triumph at Crystal Palace, when all the goals came in the first half. United are unbeaten in the last 20 league games but have only won half of those fixtures.

Who’s the man in the middle? Craig Pawson has been handed officiating duties. The Yorkshireman took charge of United's Community Shield win over Leicester City and 2-1 triumph at Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

How's the head-to-head record? In league matches between the clubs, United have won 59, drawn 29 and lost 39 times. The total figures in all competitions are 65 wins for the Reds, 37 draws and 42 defeats. United's last visit to the Stadium of Light ended in a 2-1 defeat; the club's last victory on Wearside was in October 2013, under Moyes's management and with Januzaj hitting a debut double in a tight 2-1 triumph.
