PLAYER OF THE MONTH: THE NOMINEES

Manchester United’s Player of the Month nominees for September have been announced, with three players in the running for the award.

The trio contesting the accolade are Scott McTominay, who netted his first senior goal at Old Trafford during Monday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, our youngest-ever European scorer Mason Greenwood and the winner of the August award, Daniel James.

After a month in which we kept clean sheets against Leicester City and FC Astana, Harry Maguire and David De Gea were unlucky to narrowly miss out on a place in our poll, as was Axel Tuanzebe, who captained the Reds for the first time in the Carabao Cup clash with Rochdale and filled in impressively at left-back during the Arsenal draw.

Will James claim the award for the second consecutive month, or will one of the Academy graduates, McTominay or Greenwood, be recognised? Read our summaries of the three players involved in the poll below, and then cast your vote..

MASON GREENWOOD – 3 appearances, 2 goals

19 September 2019 is a date that will resonate forever in the life of Mason Greenwood. On that night, with the Reds struggling to break down a resolute Astana side, the teenager became our youngest-ever goalscorer in European competition, feinting inside on his left before striking the ball home with his right to give United victory. Six days later, he repeated the trick against Rochdale, this time finishing with his other foot. Although his Premier League outings were limited to one substitute appearance, against Arsenal, Mason’s performances in the cups mean the now 18-year-old – he celebrates his birthday today – is on our shortlist.

DANIEL JAMES – 4 appearances

While the Wales international may not have been able to repeat his August goalscoring heroics last month, James still caught the eye with his blistering forward runs and desire to take on defenders, particularly during the Arsenal match, when he helped United go from defending a corner to scoring the opening goal in the blink of an eye. It’s easy to forget that the 21-year-old had never played top-flight football prior to the 2019/20 season, so quickly has he adapted to life in a red shirt, and he looks to be the latest in a long line of fine wingers who’ve raced down the flanks at Old Trafford.

SCOTT McTOMINAY – 3 appearances, 1 goal

Although he wasn’t involved against Astana and Rochdale, the Academy graduate played every minute of our three Premier League games last month and particularly impressed in the home matches against Leicester City and Arsenal, topping the Man of the Match poll in each of them. The Scot, who is increasingly showing his leadership potential in this young United side, particularly caught the eye in the latter fixture, showing great heart to drive the side forward from midfield and putting the Reds into a half-time lead with a crashing effort from the edge of the area.

HOW DO I VOTE?
